How Openbom saved me hours of work **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Jeff R. | Sole Craftsman & Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2023 **What do you like best about OpenBOM?** I spent many hours learning Fusion 360 (F360) to design a 15' long by 8' feet high builtin shelves and cabinets centered around a 65" TV. As you could imagine it resulted in many individual boards that have to be cut. F360 does not have a feature to easily print a cutsheet, essentially you have to painstakingly enter the dimensions of every board, Which is time consuming at best and error prone at worst.  Fortunately I found the add-on utility/program to F360 that automatically creates a bill of materials (BOM) from the information within F360. The program is Openbom, and what an amazing piece of software it is. Easy to install, easy to use, well integrated with F360 and a large set of features and functionality. You can include the BOM or in my case the cutlist in F360 drawings, or export it directly to excel or a PDF. It also puts your BOM in the cloud on Openbom's servers, so you can work on your BOM independent of F360 in their web portal.  They also have top notch responsive tech support.  I found the program through Product Design Online's (PDO) youtube video, which also serves as a good training video for woodworkers wanting to use Openbom. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** The process to convert from the free trial to a registered version could have been easier. Although their might have been some user error involved **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Fusion 360 does not have a built BOM or an easy way to create a cutlist, the latter being my most important need. In F360 you have to enter the dimension of each component within the component's name if you want to create a list of dimensions. For example a name might be: Right Cabinet Side 30"x12"x3/4." This causes several issues, first you have to type it in every component, which is time consuming and also creates long names which are problematic. Then there are the errors caused by typos. The worst part of this method is that everytime you change the dimensions of your component you have to remember to change the name of the component. Which flies in the face of F360's parametric design methodology, In F360 if you want to change a dimension you can simply change the value of a parameter and then all associated components will automatically size to that new dimension. This would mean you would have to find all the components that changed dimensions, figure out what the change was and change the name of the component to include the new dimension. You can see what a big help Openbom is, as it determines the dimensions from F360's data, not something that you have to type in. These allow our different teams to see only what they need to see. These features ensure important insights are not hidden by excessive detail. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** It runs slow from time to time. Thumbnail images might not show up, and when a part is updated in one area, it can sometimes take a while for that update to be reflected elsewhere. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** OpenBOM helps us keep BOM for our projects organized. The keyword search is quick to recognize and suggest parts in the system even without a companies internal part number. Since I am new to the professional world like this it is great to have such a simple yet powerful tool to integrate into. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** The main thing I dislike about the software is the common occurance when searching keywords that an unrelated item commonly comes up. If I am searching for a screw and I input "screw ... It starts off comfy but before you know it it's a tangled mess that only you (the creator) can undestand. I've been there, done that – which led me finding out about OpenBOM. What I like about OpenBom is that is brings back that comfy spreadsheet feeling, but this time it's a breeze to organize your inventory and handle manufacturing tasks like recording product revisions, tracking prodcuts costs, and managing supplier purchase orders. I will never forget the pain of getting lost in a labyrinth of spreadsheet cells and formulas – OpenBOM does keeps things clean and simple, so you can focus on actually getting production completed. Even though our needs were pretty straightforward OpenBOM grows with you. Before it, the system we were using had terrible performance and wasn't very customizable, whereas OpenBOM is newer and has a lot more advanced PLM features. We record and monitor intakes and outputs, both for our B2B business and the e-commerce side.
