I like that it provides multi-level BOMs, which we find preferable to using something like Excel. I enjoy that OpenBOM operates a bit like a spreadsheet, offering less bloat and red tape compared to a full PLM. It's a great balance for our small team, combining the speed and flexibility of a spreadsheet with a bit of an upgrade. Additionally, the setup was easy, which was a plus for us. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** Unfortunately it's very clunky and unintuitive. It can be unintuitive and clunky, particularly how it syncs with Onshape. I've also seen scenarios where my work is wiped out when refreshing in Onshape. It's unclear if I did something wrong or if the bidirectional relationship between the softwares is the source of problems. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use OpenBOM for multi-level BOMs in my startup, replacing Excel for its balance of PLM features with the speed of a spreadsheet. **Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:** > Hello David, Thank you very much for your review. I also appreciate being able to directly upload BOMs from SolidWorks, which makes the process smoother. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** I don't like that OpenBOM does not directly communicate with our MRP, Katana. It would be nice if it did. The initial setup was fairly easy, rated about 3-10 in difficulty, but mainly because it doesn't directly integrate with Katana. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use OpenBOM for controlling BOMs and parts from SolidWorks to Katana. Its very easy to generate part numbers and BOM's when it works. It has some decent options for categories and part number schemes. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** It will create a duplicate BOM for every subassembly every time you update the BOM. All the subassembly's have the same part number and it will usually use the first subassembly that was created so the BOM never actually gets updated. Sometimes it fails to generate part numbers and skips instances that it shouldn't. In general some pretty major bugs and glitches that affect the most basic functionality of the software. It's also extremely slow. My company switched from Fusion360 to Onshape recently. It took almost 30 min to update a BOM on Fusion. It's faster using Onshape but still a bit slow. Overall it's much better to use Onshape's native BOM capabilities. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Fusion 360 has no usable BOM capabilities. Open BOM integrates with fusion and allowed us to generate BOM's rather than creating them by hand in a spreadsheet. **Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:** > Hello, Thank you for your comment and feedback. The most common issue when capturing a BOM from Onshape (and other CAD systems) is how Part Numbers and configurations are managed. Engineers love configurations because they allow them to work faster. However, configurations also introduce significant complexity when creating a product structure with Part Numbers. If your configurations for parts and assemblies don’t have unique Part Numbers, this can lead to incorrect structures and duplications in OpenBOM. We are implementing several mechanisms to prevent the creation of duplicate BOMs in such situations. These mechanisms are already available in our SolidWorks add-in and are coming soon to other CAD add-ins. A few comments to clarify the differences between Onshape BOM and OpenBOM (although both share the name "BOM" 🙂): OpenBOM and Onshape BOM are not the same, even though they share the term "BOM." Onshape BOM is a great table-editing tool that connects directly to the Onshape assembly component structure. If all you need is to edit assemblies and components within Onshape, then Onshape BOM is the right tool. Therefore, I'm curious what brings you to OpenBOM anyway :). However, OpenBOM allows you to capture design data (assemblies/parts) and create multiple BOMs—engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, cost, etc.—providing a stable product structure and lifecycle (revision) control. This revision control is different from Onshape revisions. Your design revisions are not the same as item/EBOM revisions in OpenBOM because you may have a system (mechanical, electronic, software, etc.) that defines your product. How do you manage revisions for such a system? You cannot do this in Onshape unless everything you do is designed within Onshape, ignoring the rest of your product's ecosystem. It has one of the best and most seamless integrations with our CAD. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** I didn't really see any value add using this over directly linking to SAP. It didn't seem to be worth the price. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is not solving problems. While I agree that SAP offers a strong solution for a specific group of customers, most OpenBOM users — particularly in the SMB space — are not using SAP. For them, OpenBOM delivers a seamless engineering-to-purchasing workflow. As for SAP solutions, I’m not convinced that connecting CAD directly to SAP solves the broader challenges of managing multiple BOM types, engineering configurations, and revision control. The standard requirements for a BOM product are there, like multi-level structures, revisions, etc. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** The customer support is not very great. I attended a webinar where they were demonstrating a new feature, but it wasn't working properly. When I asked them to clarify, they claimed that it was working! The layout is intuitive. I was able to start using the software with very little training. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** I was not able to get the overview that i desired. I wished shared components between parts had more features, and i could not find a way to see all assemblies where a shared part was used. I wish there was even more features to generate a better overview, especially when ordering parts. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** To create a better overview of shared parts between subassemblies, and which componenets are needed. OpenBOM is not set up for Multilevel BOMs right out of the box. We chose the simplest Multilevel BOM solution and several weeks of customization is needed for it to work properly. There should be different levels of complexity and the code ready to go immediately when a company chooses what level of complexity they require. I feel like the complexity and timeline was not communicated to us properly to know what to expect. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Importing BOMs from Solidworks to Netsuite without having to manually type in all of the details. It makes it nice to automatically import BOMs including all of the properties that are associated with the parts. ### 15. Very interested in them adding change notice abilities in the future. They are also responsive when our team brings up issues. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** Great difficulty with configurations (for assemblies, as a robotics company, configurations are used to show an assembly in different positions, rather than as different items. Open BOM doesn't allow for this). Though I understand there is much more training then there was, I still find that after the initial set up, many things are not as straightforward as I would like them to be **Recommendations to others considering OpenBOM:** I think it will become really great software, but it is still in the growing stages. However, for the pricepoint, its pretty hard to beat **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our primary reason for using OpenBOM was to manage BOM changes, particularly roll up quantities, which are difficult when you have many layers of sub assembly. However, with the configuration issue above, we still cannot do this.
