The customer support is very good, and it offers a solid range of features that make it suitable for frequent use. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** There isn’t really anything I dislike about Onshape, except for one issue: it relies entirely on an internet connection. I appreciate how parts of an assembly are created in the same space, which allows for faster changes and saves time. Instead of having a separate design tree for each part, Onshape lets me use one design tree shared across several parts. I also found that basic modeling was quick to learn within a few weeks, and becoming more proficient took about six months, even without direct training, thanks to the helpful Onshape support. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** 3D Sketch is an area that needs more development. There are several 3D Sketch functions in Onshape, and a more refined approach would be helpful. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Onshape prevents crashing and losing work. It's intuitive and lets me efficiently create and modify models by sharing a single design tree for multiple parts, saving time and allowing for faster changes. It also saves time by updating itself every 3vweeks and because its cloud based, eliminates the need and cost for a server. Your 3D models can then be shared very easily with co workers or customers for quick and efficient review. ### 3. I also like the ease to share a document with non-cad users. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Some advanced functions are missing when compared to Solidworks. The fact that the platform is not as vastly used like other CAD platform makes it a barrier when reaching out to potential collaborators. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Not having to create a vault or server to share the drawings is of huge help and hopping a new user is really fast and easy. Having the PDM-like functionnality also help to share the drawings. ### 4. Traditional CAD systems are tied to a single machine, creating a tangle of files and version control issues. With Onshape, that complexity is gone. My entire design history, from initial sketches to final assemblies, is all stored in one central, secure location. This allows my team and me to work on the same model simultaneously and in real time, just like editing a document in Google Docs. The days of sending large files back and forth, losing track of revisions, or accidentally overwriting someone else's work are finally over. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** I wish there was some way to work offline, even in a limited format. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Version Control Nightmares: It's difficult to keep track of different versions of a design, and easy to accidentally lose or overwrite a teammate's work. Poor Collaboration: Teams can't work on the same model at the same time, forcing a slow, sequential workflow where large files are sent back and forth. Data Management Complexity: The system creates a "tangle of files" that is difficult to manage and secure. The interface is clean and intuitive, and the feature set is powerful enough to handle complex design work without feeling overwhelming. What really sets Onshape apart is its collaborative workflow. Real-time sharing, version control, and branching make working with others seamless, whether you're in the same room or halfway around the world. One feature I especially appreciate is Follow Mode—being able to follow someone’s cursor as they work through a model makes collaboration and review incredibly efficient. It’s the next best thing to sitting side-by-side. As First Robotics Mentor, this feature allows me to follow my students' work in real-time and recognise where they are struggling to better support them on their way to becoming Onshape masters. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** While I love onshape, it is missing a few features that would be useful and keep me from using for every project. Two that come to mind are 3D sketching and surface tools like patching and scultping. Some projects I have encountered recently have required some surface editing. And having a tool that allows for dimension driven surface editing would be incredibly helpful. I edit lots of files from imports and I would love to use onshape for this but it is a noticable weakpoint. Many of the Loft feature that i use to generate surfaces from sketchs often break with the complex geometry I attemp to create with them. 3D sketches would also be incredibly helpful for bridging curves and completing complex surface boundaries. I would also like be able to add points in a part studio with out needing a sketch plane. Just a point that I can use to pattern parts, or connect lines to certain locations would be helpful. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Onshape gives me a very accessible studio for all of my projects that I never have to worry about saving or losing in files on my device. The cloud based network is crucial to my workflow. ### 7. As well as full modelling capabilities, OnShape comes included with full version/change control features and integrates well with Arena (also PTC) for producdute lifecycle management. Our team moved over to OnShape from SolidWorks and found the process of implementing the new CAD system very easy, especially compared with systems like SolidWorks PDM which requires 3rd party resellers to help setup. Unlike oldschool CAD packages, which at best recieve a few small updates every-year, OnShape improves very quickly, having big updates every 3 weeks or so. As a part modeller, on-shape is easily as good if not better than its competitors like SolidWorks. It takes a different approach to assembly modelling, which is more performant. It is catching up quickly with other CAD packages regarding engineering drawing features. It also features some simulation and rendering capabilities; both produce decent results quickly, but are not the main focus of the software. A huge benefit of Onshape being cloud based is that it is far more stable than locally run CAD systems, it virtually never crashes and I have never lost any data having used this extensively amost everyday for over a year. Our team vastly prefers OnShapes business model compared to that of SolidWorks. Rather than paying a third-party-reseller licences, set-up, PDM server setup (which is a nightmare to maintain and will need continuous 3rd party support to be functional), separate costs for its various licences, and subscription fees, everything is covered under one cost with OnShape, and you deal with the company directly rather than through third parties. This has worked out as far cheaper for our team, with much less of our engieers time spent on admin. Customer support are very helpful and are easy to access through online chats, forums, or teams calls. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Compared to other CAD packages OnShape is the best, although you may not find all of the specific features that you are used to. The OnShape team add features very frequently though (updates every ~3 weeks) and requests for new features can be made and voted on in the forums. Custom features can also be written and shared if you feel that there is a specific feature missing or something that would be useful to automate for your workflow. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** OnShape is now our main and only mechanical CAD package used by our designers. It also servers the purpose of PDM and PLM (when paired with Arena) which was previously done by SolidWorks PDM, which we were not happy with. It helps the mechanical team share ideas with the rest of the business with the far cheaper view only licenses that are available. ### 8. This is especially evident when using both the mobile version to review remotely, while making most substantial edits on a desktop. Built in simulation on the pro version is great. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Some of the rendering control when adding customs scenes is something I need to work on more use well. I also wish that there was more customization on the BOM control for the free version, but it can work as is out of the box. The pro version is much more useful, if you can figure out enough code to make it work with your organizational structure. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** I grew up in a world of printed blueprints and sketches, and now I work professionally in a virtual world to fill same role. As an engineer and draftsperson, it allows me to be a working member in GDP by reviewing designs, building BOMS and providing drawings to contractors that build the physical world that we live in. ### 9. At work I have a CAD workstation, at home I have a 14 year old PC, with Onshape being a cloud based software, the computing is done in the cloud not on my local computer. In the event I have to work from home, I don't have to worry about lugging around my CAD workstation or invest in a new home computer, I simply log on from home and experience relatively the same performance on my old home PC as I would with a newer, more powerful machine. To add to this Onshape also runs on my phone. I have done some quick edits and even complete CAD models on my phone when I don't even have access to a computer. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** The downside I deal with is that Onshape is still new and lacks some of the functionality more mature CAD software has. This is especially true in the sheet metal side of modeling and documentation. I have experienced this same situation about 20 years ago with traditional CAD software. Back in 2000 when I started using 3D CAD, it seemed sheet metal enhancements were always few and far between. I am optimistic that Onshape, having enhancements added every 3 weeks, will break this trend in the CAD industry. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Onshape documents allows me to keep one single source of truth. An Onshape document is unique in that it is not just an area for CAD data. When working in a manufacturing setting there is more than just CAD data needed to ensure the accuracy and quality of a product. In my field I need material test reports (MTR) , weld procedures (WPS) , quality documents, etc. With Onshape I can store all of this in one Onshape document. At anytime during the life cycle of the product I can add or remove contributors and also set the amount of access by setting just viewing or full editing permissions. No need to search different areas of a local based server or computer for a document, it is all just one internet link away stored in the cloud. Information contained within the Onshape document can be accessed anywhere, anytime, on any device. Comments and revisions or made in the same environment that the design is done so there is no need for a separate viewer or scanning and filing of a marked up .pdf or printed drawing. ### 10. With onshape I can quickly add a new user to our company, they log in on pretty much anything and they're away. I don't have to schedule a week of downtime to update vaults and clients. It's always up to date and updates come every few weeks. It's rapidly catching up mainstream cad in features too. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Some features are still missing but it's usually a case of just doing things slightly differently. I use it on a daily basis and use it inteseively. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** When making drawings, it needs to be more like any other CAD software. I guess Onshape is working on that still but it needs some time to get used to. Its our one biggest tool for being able to do our work. Apart from other CAD systems we are benefiting on easy administration and need for less computer power. Its real-time editing allows multiple users to work together, and is it's real plus. The software's version control needs a bit of time to understand but works well. As a cloud based platform, you can access it with any device **What do you dislike about Onshape?** The learning curve is quite steep at the beginning. You need a fast internet connection to be able to work, which can be a bit underwhelming. I use OnShape several times during the day and I am able to access in multiple locations on any device with ease. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** I have struggled to get the assembly build features dialed in, compared to the other CAD systems that I've used. Outside of that, the bulk of what OnShape offers is very quick to integrate and get working easily. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Onshape allows me to create new concepts and work through the product development process with customers in many different levels of experience. And it becomes more useful when you want a feedback from your senior as quickly as possbile. In terms of part design, it is simply too convenient to have all the parts to be glanced in a single 3d environment other than the assembly. **What do you dislike about Onshape?** That being said, it still has a long way to go, for example drawing environment is not up to the standard set by its peers. Drawing environment is simply too inconsistent for a long session. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** In terms of quick designing and showing to the customer to get a feedback, it is pretty fast in that regard. ### 25. You can work everywhere with a CAD System! PDM System is integrated, you don`t need a 2nd programm for that. And it works fine. Btw. no crashes like other cad programms! **What do you dislike about Onshape?** Sometime the Cad Mouse doesn`t work with Firefox. So we must restart the 3d mouse and then re login to onshape -> after that it works perfectly again. **What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?** Next level CAD System.
