"Powerful and versatile data collection solution for use in a wide range of applications"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

The wide range of features available for data collection ranging from standard survey features (such as single/multiple answer questions, numeric, free text fields, etc) to more complex features (such as background audio recording, geopoint, drawings, but also complex skip logic, repeat options and calculations) is very attractive as it covers most data collection needs and can be combined to implement very complex data collection strategies.

I also appreciate the very high robustness of the software, the collaborative spirit and transparency of the developments, as well as the incredible reactivity and dedication of the core team and the whole community on the ODK forum to support users all around the globe. All this has contributed to massively improving my data collection skills.

In a nutshell, ODK succeeds in delivering a high-quality data collection solution (also including complete audit trails) that can meet the business needs of users in both low- and high-income settings, thus contributing to the development of strong data pipelines in very remote and complex environments where data are traditionally sparse and to the generation of crucial insights for decision-making. What do you dislike about ODK?

The absence of case management or longitudinal features may be limiting for some users at the moment (there are actually workarounds -which I am personally using to collect longitudinal data, but this requires moderate technical skills), but this functionality is in the ODK roadmap and the first technical developments for this functionality have started. The technical choices disclosed by the team for this functionality seem excellent and should offer even more data collection opportunities than the tools in their current version.

More data management features could be added to ODK Central. There is no easy way for instance for anybody supervising the data collection operations to quickly review the content of several submissions at once on a very large amount of variables. But this is a minor inconvenience as data management tasks can be efficiently performed by third-party applications. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"How ODK helps us collect data about nature and participates to its conservancy"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

ODK is a great tool to deploy field data collection tools for all our protocols or methods.

We started using ODK in 2015 and at the moment we use 25 different forms. Some are generalists some are very specific to a project or a method or a species.

ODK main qualities for us are :

- Collect and Central's robustness (No data loss because of the software since 2015)

- XLSForm widgets collection that covers approximately all our needs

- Collected data are easy to integrate into our geographic information system

- The team is attentive to user's needs and is open to discuss with us.

Each version comes with new useful capabilities that make your forms even more efficient.

Developing and deploying 25 different apps would never have been possible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

There is nothing we dislike. We have to keep in mind that ODK is a powerful generic tool. And because it is generic it will not have this particular, precise feature you have in a very specific tool you know.

There are some features we would like, for example being able to filter "repeat" tables through the API. In such a case we start a discussion with the team over the forum and for sure we'll find a solution. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Essential software for public good"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

This is the quintessential software suite for flexible and powerful data collection. With primary use cases in public good, ODK's commitment to open principles allows it to be used for any data collection purpose, by anyone, anywhere.

It provides the code base for several other forked data collection software projects such as Survey CTO, KoBoToolbox, Ona and CommCare. Working both off-grid and online, remote or in person, ODK is amenable to use in low- and middle-income countries, and in both complex and remote settings. The core team at getODK work collaboratively with their user community and continuously add new features, whilst working in clear and transparent alignment with mission goals that are defined by an independent governance body. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

I literally can't think of anything I dislike about ODK, although I should declare that I am a current member of the independent technical advisory board. If there is any problem, it is that the timeline for many excellent new ideas for developments and features that are documented in the development roadmap can only progress in alignment with funding and team capacity. "Nice community, easy deployment."
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

Most of the tooling is open source. Easy/cheap to buy into and a very active and engage user base. Also, all partners know how to use it since its the industry standard Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

Testing of surveys can be difficult. Enketo doesn't load long surveys so we test them in the app. Also, you need to test full surveys and not modules (when modules depend on previous answers). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A phenomenally useful, well-documented and effective software for data collection and analysis"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

ODK's ability to seemlessly work offline is its greatest feature. Unlike many tools (which require constant connectivity), ODK is built for the real world. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

Data retrieval can be slow for questionnaires with many submissions. Hard deletion of data (sometimes required for compliance reasons) is not straightforward. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"ODK Cloud is Excellent"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

Our offgrid solar business relies on ODK to collect and organize data in the most challenging environments. With ODK Cloud, we don't need to worry about anything. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

We previously faced occasional challenges maintaining our own ODK server. Switching to ODK Cloud was painless and made our lives even easier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"I like the simplicity of using the ODK in data collection."
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

All the components that make up ODK, make it very useful with or without Internet connection. The ability to not worry about connection issues since it can work offline is really important for us working in remote settings. Also as a data manager, the UI is designed very well such that, when conducting training people understand very quickly how to get around. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

-Not being able to be used in follow-up studies (directly). But I understand there are some tricks for this, and it is among the features that will be available in the future.

-It can be very challenging to design a good questionnaire to be deployed in odk. People with programming backgrounds easily understand some syntax.

-Also, working in teams where each individual is assigned different objectives is impossible, leaving this group aside.

-Easy way of assessing how data collector is performing, e.g., constantly changing answers for questions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Offline first accurate, fast & affordable mobile data collection"
5/5
What do you like best about ODK?

ODK is offline first, coming from a country where data poverty is a norm, ODK allows us to collect our data in a fast, reliable, accurate and cost-effective way offline first, then only uploading when we have a stable wifi connection at the office Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ODK?

Lack of support for a native Collect app for iOS (not that I am complaining, less than 1% of our users have an iPhone) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
