For us, we collected geospatial information about flood-affected areas, evacuation facilities, and amenities for urban resilience, as well as waste management data to make decisions about how to tackle plastics and solid waste. Furthermore, we collected nationwide data on milling machines to imply the national level of food security, as well as nationwide data on public primary schools to assess the feeding status, which also entails the status of food security to kids and villages. The integration of third-party external apps (in our case, facial recognition) also seems really solid. **What do you dislike about ODK?** A robust function for entity management has been a long-standing desire for us, such that we tried ODK-X a few years ago (unsuccessfully!) and then developed a hack using SQL scripts, cronjobs and separate syncing software. It has been a long time coming and we are eagerly awaiting further functionality (especially automatic creation). **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** ODK is allowing us to deploy a solution for the large-scale collection of spatial and alphanumeric data for the first time registration of land rights, carried out in offline settings and administered by rural African community members. We have designed our own surveys and hosted them on ODK for enumerators to collect with tablets in the field, as well as relied on ODK's in-house programming services for more complex surveys. ODK Collect is extremely easy to use and seamlessly sends data collected from the field to the ODK Central server for real-time data quality checks. We have also been using the ruODK package to directly download and import our survey data into R using the API. The ruODK package is fantastic and makes importing, cleaning, and analyzing data incredibly quick and easy. **What do you dislike about ODK?** The ability to add "repeats" is incredibly useful, but how the data exports from repeats is a bit clunky and hard to use. ODK has been extensively tested off line and in a wide range of contexts. ODK is highly flexible and adaptable to the circumstances where NGOs collect data. This is very different from the needs of a private company. ODK forms can be created in a "low code" manner which makes it accessible not only to staff with a knowledge of coding but also Health, Nutrition and other sector based staff. **What do you dislike about ODK?** Limitations of the traditional ODK products may be resolved as part of new releases. The main limitation is connecting data from different forms together and being able to edit data after submission. Some of these "case management" type functionalities seem to be the next big step. **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** Data arrives from project sites to the offices in a fraction of the time, even if physically moving people is difficult. This means we can quickly take decisions to send more assistance to areas in emergency need, react to disease outbreaks, ensure medications dont run out and learn how to improve our programs. Paper data collection is a disaster which is too slow and high risk for our purposes. Excel sheets are not useful in remote environments where staff use mobile phones rather than laptops and do not have the necessary functionality to ensure accurate data. I haven't found a situation or location where it can't help us collect data. Being open-source software, there is a fantastic community behind it providing support and development - every time I go back, there are new features that advance or simplify data collection protocols. The documentation is easy to understand and kept up to date. The forum responses are fast and expectation-exceeding. **What do you dislike about ODK?** I wish it had been this far advanced 10 years ago! It is focussed on Android (but the web app works for most situations for iOS users) **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** We collect primary data in the field. Our "field" can be anything from a remote mountain top to a town hall - we work across different environmental sectors. ODK just works. Pretty much any kind of data can be handled - the only limitation is my creativity. For example, we converted a survey technique for assessing the condition of mountain paths to digital using ODK, which almost halved the overall survey time (field to report) and enabled us to collect better, more accurate data than previously possible. The online learning materials provided by ODK were very comprehensive and intuitive, allowing me to self-learn. Regarding the more complex issues I encountered, the ODK support team responded quickly and proactively to find solutions that worked. There is also a big ODK online forum which served as a basis for inspiration; using the ODK forum, I'd often come across some interesting features of ODK that could be applied to the XLS forms we were designing in our project. **What do you dislike about ODK?** The only shortcoming has been that the ODK application (which is needed for offline data collection) is only compatible with Android devices. Since I have an iPhone I could not test the surveys myself through ODK Collect, and this would have allowed me to address some technical challenges we encountered at an earlier stage. **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our purpose for using ODK was to support a number of our global partners in collecting data on their clients. Our partners wanted to collect data directly from low-income people in their respective regions of activity. The interviewees were diverse in terms of their level of literacy, their level of digital literacy, the devices they owned, whether they have a stable internet/telephone collection, etc. ODK was really helpful since it was flexible to facilitate digital data collection in a variety of ways, meaning that we could always adhere to the specific needs of our partners. For example, when a high proportion of interviewees owned a smartphone with internet access, partners could send them a link to the ODK survey through WhatsApp. In areas where interviewees did not own a device or else lived in areas with no connectivity, data collectors could physically visit these interviewees to collect information from them using ODK's offline data-collection tool 'ODK Collect'. The flexibility of ODK allowed us to be inclusive of all interviewees that partners wanted to include. Moreover, this strengthened our relations with partners since we could be flexible to meet their specific needs for digital data collection. ### 18. Scalable: Being open source, there is no license cost, allowing to scale to many users. Other solutions incur a per-seat charge, which makes them unavailable to poorly or entirely unfunded campaigns and partners. ODK scales without problem. For my campaigns, this allowed to include partner programs with no own funding at all, or in-house colleagues being able to capture data using their existing Android devices. Extensible: Being open source also facilitates contributing to feature development, from the planning and discussion phase to direct code contributions. I have contributed some new features to ODK Build that are in active use at my employer and now benefit the wider ODK community. Interaction with the ODK core team has helped me shape my contributions to ODK's standards. Robust: ODK has proven itself immensely robust, which speaks to the quality of development and testing. The very few issues we experienced were addressed rapidly by the core developer team. ODK is one of the most robust software we use. We have captured about half a million data points using ODK across 2000km of rugged subtropical coastline and islands under harsh environmental conditions. Running on inexpensive Android hardware has helped minimize our hardware expenses. Friendly: The ODK user community is another big plus. The tone and conduct in the user forum are exemplary friendly and inviting to non-experts, and the forum provides a high level of freely supplied and accessible expertise for any issues and questions. I came for the free software, I stayed for the community. Well-documented: The ODK documentation is extremely thorough and well written. The implemented data standards are clearly documented. The API documentation deserves a special mention. Low risk: The business model makes ODK very attractive to corporate clients. Paid hosting and support offer immediate productivity, and the fact that ODK is now self-funded through existing subscriptions makes ODK a safe choice. **What do you dislike about ODK?** There's nothing I dislike about ODK or its community. In terms of most requested but not yet implemented features, ODK is architected as a uni-directional data capture solution. Longitudinal data capture is the most requested feature that is now in active development at ODK. **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** ODK solves the need for offline capable, electronic data capture and warehousing with an accessible API. The spatial map widgets and auto-captured fields like datetimes, user and device identities, start and end times, help us reduce human error during data capture. The API of ODK Central, together with the R package ruODK, allow to automate data ETL workflows from ODK into our downstream data warehouses. We have implemented elaborate QA procedures and functionality downstream, but the data QA and lineage that is now built into ODK Central is useful to other, smaller campaigns, using ODK Central as point of truth and place of QA edits. ### 23. I have seen no other such simple form definitions (i.e., XlsForms) that can create comparibly complex forms or even tiny form-based applications. The core development team and open source community are extremely responsive and quick in support, especially on the ODK forum. I have mostly been using ODK Central and web-based survey (Enketo) and appreciate its offline capabilities. **What do you dislike about ODK?** Really not much that I can say that I dislike about ODK. I think it's a little stronger for enumerator-based data collections (i.e., ODK Collect). For self-assessment surveys (i.e., more Enketo), I think the UI could have a little fresh-up and some functions could be added for the particular use case. **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use ODK to collect primary data from farmers and growers all around the world. The current project I am working on couldn't be rolled out in a traditional format- we are giving citizens in informal settlements phones loaded with ODK tasks and asking them questions throughout the year. By using ODK, we are saving thousands of GBP and collecting more data than if we were using enumerators to find individuals again, repeat a survey and convert data from paper. We have moved to now use ODK central servers to support the project, including project-level encryption, rapid response to any technical issues and peace of mind using a secure server. **What do you dislike about ODK?** I suppose the biggest hurdle at the begning is realising that ODK does not allow you to skip decent survey design, so the work is front loaded to the project (survey design and conversion to ODK), but as above, the downstream benefits are overwhelmingly positive. The technical choices disclosed by the team for this functionality seem excellent and should offer even more data collection opportunities than the tools in their current version. More data management features could be added to ODK Central. There is no easy way for instance for anybody supervising the data collection operations to quickly review the content of several submissions at once on a very large amount of variables. But this is a minor inconvenience as data management tasks can be efficiently performed by third-party applications. **What problems is ODK solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am using the ODK solution (ODK Central, ODK Collect, Enketo) for a large multicountry project which is conducted at the primary care level in 3 Sub-Saharan African countries and 1 Asian country. It is an intensive data collection with data collected on 200,000+ participants (including several follow-up time points) and varied needs split in 10+ studies with interdependencies (quantitative data collection in rural areas with very poor network, recording of processes and times associated with specific activities, qualitative data collection). I had run an initial assessment of the potential data collection tools for this project and it had appeared that ODK was the best suited for the project needs, as the same platform could meet all the essential requirements. All of the studies were implemented as multilingual forms in ODK. The data collection is now midway and it has been a real comfort to know the tool we are using is so reliable and so easy to administer, so that I was able to focus my attention on content-related improvements. I also interfaced ODK Central with R through the excellent RuODK package and ODK API to generate daily reports and dashboards to monitor operations in the field, which has enables solving operational issues more efficiently. ### 32.
