"Powerful imagery analysis platform with a steep learning curve"

5/5

What do you like best about Octave Imagine?

What I appreciate most is how it handles large raster datasets without choking — you can work with massive satellite imagery files and the processing pipeline stays manageable. The spectral analysis tools are genuinely powerful once you get used to them; things like band combinations and supervised classification feel well thought-out compared to more general GIS tools.I also like that it integrates reasonably well into broader workflows — connecting with ArcGIS or exporting to standard formats isn't a headache. And the Spatial Modeler (the graphical workflow builder) is something I find myself coming back to, because it lets you build repeatable processing chains visually, which is useful when you're doing the same type of analysis across multiple datasets.

It also has AI / Intelligence. Lots of it. Oh my god. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Octave Imagine?

The interface feels like it hasn't fully shed its legacy roots — it can be unintuitive, especially when you're trying to find a specific tool that you know exists but is buried three menus deep. The learning curve is steep for new users, and the documentation doesn't always bridge that gap well.

Performance can also be inconsistent — certain processing jobs that should be straightforward take longer than expected, and error messages aren't always helpful in telling you why something failed. You often end up troubleshooting by trial and error.

And the licensing model is frustrating. It's expensive, and in a team setting, license conflicts and seat availability become a real friction point. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Octave Imagine solving and how is that benefiting you?

The core problem it solves for me is turning raw satellite or aerial imagery into something analytically useful — classifying land cover, detecting change over time, extracting features that would be invisible just looking at a standard RGB image. That's not something you can do well in general-purpose GIS tools. The practical benefit is that it compresses what would otherwise be very manual, expert-heavy work into repeatable workflows. Once you've set up a classification model or a processing chain in Spatial Modeler, you can run it across new datasets without rebuilding everything from scratch — that saves real time on recurring projects. For reporting purposes it also helps that outputs are credible and traceable. When you're delivering analysis to a client or institution, being able to say the work was done in an industry-standard platform carries weight. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Remote Sensing Suite, But a Steep Learning Curve"

3.5/5

What do you like best about Octave Imagine?

What I liked most about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) is how well it brings satellite imagery and remote sensing tasks together in a single platform. I also appreciated the wide range of practical tools it provides for image processing, mapping, and spatial analysis, which I found especially helpful for academic and environmental work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Octave Imagine?

The biggest downside for me was the learning curve, especially when I was trying to figure out ecology-related tasks. Some tools and workflows can feel complicated for beginners, and the interface takes time to get used to when you’re still learning remote sensing and GIS analysis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Octave Imagine solving and how is that benefiting you?

Octave Imagine helps simplify the processing and analysis of satellite imagery and spatial data. In my experience, it was particularly useful for academic work because it kept habitat mapping, image interpretation, and environmental analysis better organized, easier to manage, and overall more efficient. It also helped me clarify specific research questions for my thesis, especially around mapping carnivore species. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Spatial Modeler & Object-Based Extraction for Water Projects"

5/5

What do you like best about Octave Imagine?

What I like best about ERDAS IMAGINE is how its image processing and spatial analysis tools directly support my water and environmental modeling projects. The Spatial Modeler lets me build custom, repeatable workflows like watershed delineation, flood extent mapping, and time-series vegetation analysis without scripting everything from scratch.

The object-based feature extraction is a game-changer for classifying complex wetland and riparian zones, giving me cleaner results than pixel-based methods. I also rely on the seamless handling of multispectral, thermal, and radar data to monitor changes even under cloud cover.

An unexpected bonus is the cartographic output: I can produce publication-ready maps right in IMAGINE, which saves me from exporting to another GIS. The ribbon interface and step-by-step workflow pane make the UI intuitive, and the drag-and-drop model builder has noticeably reduced the time my team spends on repetitive processing, so we can focus on interpreting results and crafting real solutions for water-resource challenges. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Octave Imagine?

The cost is very high and hard to justify when performance lags badly with large datasets. Working with big multispectral mosaics or long time series often causes hangs or crashes, forcing me to break data into smaller pieces just to keep working. Support delays are another pain point, sometimes taking days to resolve licensing or processing issues right when deadlines are tight. The frequent updates disrupt the classic interface and signature workflow that experienced users depend on, adding an unnecessary learning curve each time. On top of that, the AI and intelligence capabilities feel underdeveloped. Automated classification wizards and feature extraction often produce unreliable results that need heavy manual cleanup, and there is no meaningful integration of modern deep learning tools. Integrations with other platforms are weak too. Moving data between ERDAS IMAGINE and common GIS packages like ArcGIS or QGIS is clunky, file format support can be inconsistent, and a proper API to streamline cross-platform workflows is missing. I wish they would stabilize a long term support version with the original tool layout, speed up processing for large raster volumes, offer a more affordable consulting firm tier, provide faster expert support, and deliver real AI powered analysis and smoother third party integrations so the software doesn't become the bottleneck in critical environmental work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Octave Imagine solving and how is that benefiting you?

ERDAS IMAGINE solves the core problem of turning raw satellite and aerial imagery into reliable spatial information for water and environmental modeling. Before I had a consistent image processing platform, stitching together multispectral, thermal, and radar data from different sensors was a slow, manual struggle. Now I can perform watershed delineation, flood extent mapping, and time series vegetation analysis within a single environment, which directly feeds into project solutions. The Spatial Modeler lets me build repeatable workflows that I run over and over for monitoring change over time, saving hours each week compared to doing those steps separately in multiple tools. Despite performance lags with very large datasets, the fundamental classification and terrain analysis tools still help me cleanly extract wetland and riparian zone boundaries, giving me accurate base maps for environmental impact assessments. The object based feature extraction, in particular, produces better results in messy vegetated areas than any basic pixel classifier I have used elsewhere. In the end, the software helps me move from raw imagery to a defensible model output, which supports better decisions for water resource management and lets me deliver client ready maps and analyses without completely leaving the ERDAS ecosystem.
