"Best compositing software available"
What do you like best about Nuke?

The node based design is a great addition as compared to layer based in software like after effects. It's able to work on heavy shots with no issue, very procedural and easy to understand. Great for students as they give non commercial and discounts. Easy support and very understandable Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nuke?

Expensive per license. If you're a freelance artist it can be hard to buy the license, but it is worth it due to its capabilities. Once a shot becomes super heavy, using deep compositing or a lot of 3d, it can become very slow. It's understandable as it's a lot to handle, but can take a long time to render a frame or playback the whole shot Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Industry standard compositing package"
What do you like best about Nuke?

Nuke is the industry standard so once you learn it, you can move to any big VFX company and jump right in. Not only this but it means you have the best software for the job, its constantly being updated and improved and ever growing with a large group of people making plugins and gizmos to aid each other.

Nuke artists are always willing to share their scripts, details and comps with each other because they understand this is a niche piece of software and we are all helping each other improve instead of trying to be better than one another.

Nuke is extremely easy to navigate when you are used to the node based layout, there are buttons (easy to press and remember) for each small detail such as hiding mask lines or viewing seperate colour channels.

Nuke also has a lot of compatibility with many different workflows such as 3D packages, file types and even exporter settings/codecs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nuke?

The price is very high, especially for freelancers but there is a new package on its way with a much lower price.

Nuke also crashes quite often which, when you're paying this much for the service is somewhat unacceptable.

Nuke has some small compatibility issues with common file types such as pngs, this is a bit annoying but easily fixable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Industry standard, but far from perfect. "
What do you like best about Nuke?

Nuke is a powerful, amazing tool for solving most problems in a 3d/Compositing pipeline. The seamless 2d/3d integration has always been a big PRO to me, as well as the node based system to build your scripts. It's very easy to get used to this style and forget layers are even a thing, and the amount of control you have over your product and the level of quality you can achieve make it so that Nuke is the #1 tool for compositing in the industry. What do you dislike about Nuke?

As much as I love the platform, there are many things that definitely need reviewing:

1. Pricing: at around $9,000 USD for the most "complete" version of the program, Nuke is not cheap. they have slowly developed more and more options for freelancers and students (Including a Non-comercial edition for educational purposes) but some of this are "watered down" versions of the software.

2. Bugs & Updates: just recently installed the latest version of Nuke at the school where I teach, and I was surprised to see a bug from version 8 or so all the way into version 11. Roto, Paint, and even the viewer have had bugs and artifacts for a while, and a quick internet search reveals that other people have found this years ago and still are waiting for a fix. For a 9k Dollar software, one would expect more.

3. Licensing system: as I said, I work at a school, and everyone here dreads the day when we have to renew licenses... it has become a running joke of sorts about the amount of work and steps necessary to just renew a license. This includes paying for it, getting a TEMPORARY ONE, and then waiting a couple weeks for the definite licenses to arrive. I do hope there's an easier way of doing this. "Great Compositor"
What do you like best about Nuke?

The ease of use of this software is key in getting work done. The user interface has stayed consisted through its various releases and this is really important when a studio updates to a newer release as the artists don't have to waste time trying to relearn it. With every new release we can just get right to work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nuke?

Planar tracker was greatly modified a few releases back and it is terrible. Earlier versions of this tool were great and I used it a lot. Now, not so much. It barely holds unto tracking features as to where before it would detect features and hold on to them in some very poor quality footage. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great compositing package"
What do you like best about Nuke?

Flexibility and quality of output. Wide range of use potential. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nuke?

Base features (3D, etc.) could use improvement and usability enhancements for ease of day to day tasks rather than relying on third party plugins/gizmos. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Nuke description"
What do you like best about Nuke?

The thing I like about nuke is that nuke offers a limitless, integrated 3D environment that lets you create and render complex scenes composed of 2D footage, 3D models, cards, basic geometry, cameras, lights, and meshes. Great for camera projections for set replacements and other tasks where you need to simulate a "real" environment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nuke?

There is some one-off work that doesn't follow this guideline, like character animation. By its very nature, it must be unique each time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
