I first tried MonoDevelop about a 4 year ago and gave up quickly. It just wasn’t usable, but these days it’s a totally different story. I’m quite drawn to Mono and MonoDevelop because I used to be a .net developer and really like C# as a language. Also as an old Delphi developer the .net framework has an intuitive design and structure since they were both designed in large part by the same guy – Anders Hejlsberg. I saw him present on LINQ in LA, he’s a clever dude. Writing C# scripts is very easy on it and it takes nanoseconds to start. It shows errors while writing the code and give autocompletion suggestions as well. It is very stable and never crashes on the Mac. It doesn't have lots of features but it's really fast. MonoDevelop is being replaced with the visual studio. Unity has compatible with Visual Studio now in 2018 **What do you dislike about Monodevelop?** Auto-correction sometimes messes my code. Can't use it for other purposes like HTML and C++ coding. I personally don't like the user Interface of MonoDevelop. I use sublime text 3, XCode and Visual Studio for me it's very basic and small. Better integration with ASP.net hosting providers would be nice, too. It has a good user interface, and it is also free to download and use. **What do you dislike about Monodevelop?** Some of the macros are not working correctly. Also, regarding the formatting values, it works in a strange way, not as well as it should. **What problems is Monodevelop solving and how is that benefiting you?** When downloading from Unity, it can be used as the default editor, without having to install extra plugins for it to work, very useful in this regard. ### 30. The best thing to me is the simplicity of its layout and the fact that is it super easy to link it with Unity. I coded only in C# with it and it was an overall good experience. **What do you dislike about Monodevelop?** Now that Visual Studio Code is out, it is very hard for this kind of IDE to stay really attractive. So I would say the lack of features. Features are missing that other IDE's like visual studio have. Debugging when process is running works fine. I had to downgrade to older version of Monodevelop so I could run server process to host my ASP.NET application and debug it, but overall experience wasn't bad. Monodevelop gives you somewhat similiar experience to Visual Studio with smart advices when you code and showing errors live. **What do you dislike about Monodevelop?** Installation of more recent versions was bad experience. Also for my ASP.NET 4 MVC application to work I had to add MySQL provider entry to some global configuration file hidden somewhere on filesystem. There were also problems working with ASP.NET server and I had to switch to older version of Monodevelop so I could run and debug my application. **Recommendations to others considering Monodevelop:** If you plan to work with latest ASP.NET then you can probably use any editor with addons or Visual Studio Code. I would recommend trying Visual Studio Code first, because it's faster and not so heavy editor. Also, it's supported by Microsoft which stands behind its technology. **What problems is Monodevelop solving and how is that benefiting you?** Most of my experience with Monodevelop comes from creating and working with ASP.NET MVC 4 application from scratch. Requirement was that it will be hosted on Linux machine so I also had to make sure it works there. So I've chosen to develop this application wirh Mono and Monodevelop on Ubuntu operating system. Monodevelop was only application I've found working and letting me to do my work, but it involved dealing with lots of problems I've had to solve on my own, because web lacks information, articles, tutorials on how to deal with various problems.
