## Modo Reviews
  ### 1. Stay away, dead software

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michele F. | Freelance 3D Artist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modeling and unwrapping are rich in features, allowing for both procedural and direct modeling. Also, MODO has one of the better integrated vray plugins on the market, even though its always the last to update.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

MODO has an unbelievably slow development. Most of the time, you'll see money being wasted on secondary projects (such as the VRModo, Kanova, Mischief, AVP), which won't benefit the user and only lower the number of fixes and features MODO will see. Performances are deficient, some of the worst on the market (compared to max, blender, Houdini), painting, particles, sculpting are leftovers from a 7-8 years ago and will require you to use other tools to work in those fields. The render engine is barely usable compared to nowadays solutions and the shader tree, which uses it, is also the leading cause of lag and freezes in the software. Luckily, you can pick between Octane and Vray as third-party solutions.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

If you are getting started in the 3D field, consider using Blender, Houdini or anything else that has a bigger market share. MODO future is uncertain and the development stagnant. I wouldn't really recommend anyone using this and I for sure am looking elsewhere.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using MODO for product shots, which is the main focus of the entire software. Render Passes (which are a MODO-specific tool, the concept is entirely different from other software "render passes") will allow you to prepare batch processes and automatize most of your repetitive work.
Also, the package is quite decent when it comes to retopology for CAD imports, which helps in the "product shots" field.

  ### 2. Crashiest software I've ever used.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Talia S. | Concept Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

It's great for industrial 3D modeling - so long as your scene isn't too large. (ie: a complicated interior, or any exterior)

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

This software crashes at least 80 times a day for me. I'm not exaggerating. With every iteration (i've used the last 10 versions of the software, and always update right away.) It crashes on loading items, deleting items, extruding simple planes.

Their answer to this is: your config is corrupt. So I delete and remake my config- Delete and install a new modo. Still crashes. It's borderline unworkable.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me solve 3D industrial problems -

**Official Response from Emma Raw:**

> Hi Talia, Sorry to hear of these issues, it's definitely not the experience we want for any of our users. I have spoken to our product development team and they are keen to understand the issue in more detail. I am aware a support ticket has been submitted and they will be in contact in reply to that. Hope they can get this sorted quickly for you.

  ### 3. Modo makes you faster.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 01, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo has the best polygonal modeling tools and workflow out there. The UI is designed to speed you up. The direct access to fundamental features like UV's and rigging tools are what sets it apart for me. The community around it is amazing. Its procedural tools have grown in leaps and bounds. Also, as an animation platform, Modo is a hidden gem. Foundry's response to feature requests has been great.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Dynamics could be better. While the procedural modeling tools are great, there are still areas for improvement, like closing holes. Saving assembly presets is either bugged or incomplete or just needs more work. Integrations with Unreal and Unity could be better, as compared to the competition. The price, when compared to the competition, doesn't make sense. Marketing could be a lot better. Training material for things like Assemblies and scripting are all provided by the community and really inconsistent. The camera, sunlight, and rendering post could be updated. The preset library that ships with Modo was amazing when it first came out, but the content is starting to look dated and should be updated.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Just try it! Give it a month. Model, UV, texture, and render a scene and see how much faster that workflow is than anything else. Engage with the community if you have questions and see how generous and good-natured everyone is.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've used Modo for motion graphics, augmented reality models, character animation, product renders, prepping files for 3d printing, and real-time interactive displays. I modeled more furniture in record time for arch viz than anyone at my firm.

  ### 4. Great for 3D Development

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Apparel & Fashion | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 08, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

I love how advanced and detailed the quality of the built-in render engine is. I am not extremely knowledgeable about 3D modeling yet, but I believe that it is a great tool for footwear and fashion accessory use. I use the software to 3D model handbags and footwear.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

I dislike the learning curve that modo has. It does take a bit to understand your surroundings in the software and the interface is a little bit advanced. I wish it was a little easier to learn and understand.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Modo helps achieve realistic product renders for my fashion accessory models. It helps me create a realistic idea of what the product will look like without wasting time and money on too many prototype samples.

  ### 5. Beautiful renders made easy.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nathan M. | Multimedia and Audio Visual Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 10, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The best part about Modo is how easy it is to get a great render. In other 3D programs you need to set up the lighting, and everything. Beauty is not the standard. But in Modo, all o did was import my object and click render, and everything was well lit, and crisp.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

There is a bit if a learning curve at times if you are from a different program like Lightwave but that is to be expected with such a strong and robust program.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Getting cleaner renders has helped me with my video compositing. I no longer have to fight with my 3D program to get realistic renders for me to be able to composite.

  ### 6. Modo review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John F. | Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Has everything - best modeling workflow from any program, procedurals, awesome built in render engine -shader tree

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Sometimes performance slows - restarting fixes this but would like to see this improved

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Focus on learning how it was designed to be used - hot keys make a massive difference in speed

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Product and archviz workflow is faster and its flexibility allows me to move between both very easily - could not work without it-

  ### 7. Great user friendly 3D software

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kimmo H. | Illustrator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 01, 2022

**What do you like best about Modo?**

I like the user interface and overall usability. It is easy to solve problems as the software works coherently overall. A helpful community is also a bonus.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Performance could be better. And like to see more sculpting and texturing tools

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Modo for Desing and illustration tasks. Fast Iteration helps me to be more productive.

  ### 8. Fancy, Fun, and Useful Tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Moonq C. | Concept Artist/Art Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 23, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

I like the UI related in workflow and flexibilities in the tools which I can feel Modo developers have though and studied deeply.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Crashes... I am a user who enjoy customizing in many ways ,but it occurs crashes frequently . It hurts!

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Please beat Blender!

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am an art director and concept artist. I am using Modo so that I can reach better quality of concept art and 3d concept in the beginning. I love it. its lighting and modeling output is very satisfied with me.

  ### 9. Flexibility for organic shape design

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Fabio B. | R&I Engineering Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 27, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo is an excellent platform with the freedom to meet engineering targets with the flexibility of organic design principles. Modo allows transferring different 3D formats between software. Modo can export and import complex and basic geometries created with other technologies. The speed and the easy 3D manipulation is the real benefit for any creative designer.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Not every feature is easy to find. Modo needs a designer with excellent training, and it is required everyday practice. There are not traditional parametric CAD methodology, every new geometry requires some additional work that can be reduced by a parametric solution.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Design components with organic shapes are highly complicated with traditional CAD technology. Modo is a great and flexible solution that can move format 3D file format between different software. I can go back and forward with a rapid methodology. I can also explore quick ideas that can take many hours in a traditional CAD 3D environment. Flexibility and practicality are the major attributes of the MODO platform.

  ### 10. Best 3D Tool Many Did Not Know They Need

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Daniel J. | Founder, Owner, Game Programmer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

What I liked the best about MODO is procedural modeling. Instead of just selecting individual parts and adjusting them so tediously in competing products, I can just use the arrow keys and other shortcut keys to select parts that MODO can intelligently know which ones based on your initial selections.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

What I found that was least helpful in MODO is rigging tools. It is really difficult to bind mesh to skeleton perfectly. I needed to paint weights each small part by hand. Two competing tools have Geodesic Voxel Binding, which I would love to try.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Try out MODO and compare your experience with that software with your experience with other tools. I found its procedural modeling feature to be very handy. Also, it was recently updated so I can sew UVs rather than redoing UV unwrapping from start.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With MODO, I can model inanimate meshes with minimal time compared to its competition so I can have them ready sooner. I love shorter production time.

  ### 11. Perfect for 3D generalists, concept artists, physical product visualization, and story pre-viz

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jason B. | Creative Strategist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2020

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Ever since version 701 when I started using Modo, the tool has been my 3D/4D generalist workhorse, and to this day I still rely on Modo as my catch-all visualization package.

In my opinion, Modo has the best navigation and modeling *user experience* of any major CG package. This may seem trivial, but the underlying logic of Modo's modeling interface, navigation, and toggling hotkeys altogether make for a smooth work experience.

Modeling is very fast and setting up materials and rendering is also seamless. I also use Rhinoceros (a CAD software) a lot, and then use Modo for taking those CAD items and rendering them or doing basic product or brand animations. Modo plays well with CAD software (such as Rhino).

While I also use Cinema4D sometimes (for motion graphics) and Blender (for Grease Pencil storyboarding), Modo remains as my default visualization tool.

Modo has a great community of people willing to help with troubleshooting as well.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

I wish Modo would do something brave with their license options and provide some kind of free fully-functional license for _at least_ non-commercial artists. I think Modo's biggest problem is how niche it is and how (as far as I can tell) small its user community is compared to Cinema4D or Blender. Industry animation friends of mine in LA (who use primarily C4D and Houdini) didn't even know what Modo was when I mentioned it a few years ago. If Modo is going to become the most innovative and comprehensive 3D/4D package out there, it simply needs a bigger user community; Modo needs more people using it.

Apparently concept artists love Modo (like Eytan Zana), for reasons I can understand; it's great for basically blocking in a "grisaille" underpainting in which lighting and form and composition is mostly established using Modo's fantastic render engine. But a free (or totally affordable) license option for indie-freelance artists would really make Modo's brand innovative and inviting. And of course with greater popularity would come more support for faster development of new features.

That said, I hope Modo continues to aspire for industry-standard animation tools, but as of now Modo is always one step behind the pack with its animation functionality. I hope the development team doesn't relegate Modo's animation tab as it's a very useful aspect of Modo. Again, thinking of concept artists: if Modo added its own version of Blender's "Grease Pencil" toolset into the animation tab, that would be a very attractive feature for artists and 2.5D animators.

Lastly, Modo's sculpting tools are good enough for supplemental detail, but unfortunately can't hold a candle to ZBrush (nor can C4D for that matter). Maybe someday Modo will update their sculpting tools to be top-flight: it would be great to eventually see organic-form sculptors using Modo for their character concepts, but as of now that's dominated by ZBrush.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

If you're considering Modo, take a moment to articulate to yourself what your project's requirements are, and then look for a tutorial online that shows how you might go about executing your project using Modo. Chances are you'll find what you need and will be pleased by the results!

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

"Pre-viz" might be an overstatement for my use of Modo, but that's often what it's fastest at. I also draw and storyboard by hand, but sometimes doing a quick mockup in 3D and then animating it in Modo is quicker than storyboarding by hand.

  ### 12. MODO - Way more than just a modeler

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Volker T. | 3D Animation and Visual Effects, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Intuitive approach and toolset. Best in class modeling that simply "clicks". Lighting, shading and rendering and scene setup is a blast. The amount of flexibility when creating images especially for later post-production is unbeatable. The possibility to create using destructive and non-destructive approaches, and switch between seamlessly. The shader-tree is unique in it's design and especially for someone coming from a 2D background will feel like home immediately. You can later switch to nodal shading or even mix nodal shading and the shader tree.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Performance drops in complex scenes with many items and many shaders. Speed of deformers could be improved

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

When looking for a switch or starting with 3D from zero, just give MODO a shot. It's really worth it. People are always stunned when I show them how I work in MODO and what can be achieved. The first question is always: What is the program you are working with?!

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MODO is my weapon of choice for creating images and animations for marketing, product visualization and technical visualizations. There is not other tool out there that fits better to the kind of projects I have to deal with daily and lets me create faster and more flexible. I can make MODO do whatever I want it to do, and I never had the feeling that the tools are limiting me.

  ### 13. Content Creation Review

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ricky S. | 3d Generalist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 03, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Having used and tested a variety of DCC software for content creation. (Product, Archviz and Games) I still find Modo to have one of the best sets of Modeling tools available out-of-the-box. The logic and workflow clicks with the way I enjoy working.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Performance in some areas can dampen working fluidity at times. It is the core issue I would like to see addressed overall, no more stutters and lags, especially the hangs. (Seemingly at times for no apparent reason)

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

For content creation, Modo is a strong contender - if not still ahead of the pack.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It primarily forms the same answer to what I like best about Modo, the modeling tools. Though I can say even using many of the other tools, such as particles, fur and sculpt tools - all help to create what I need for any given task.

  ### 14. Modo is simple clean and easy for new users to pick up fairly quickly,

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Furniture | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 21, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

the clean interface how quickly you can find the tools and the power that is hidden under them tools.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

would be better if it had more native mac integration with the newer OS features like full metal support, supprort both for eGPU on intel macs and support for M1 native, affinity suite, blender .
some tools are hidden from new users, would be better if some of the tools had better help files to simplify what they do for new users and that some of the more advanced features where made quicker by simplifying the controls so for example if you want a low mid or high quality render have the dialogue have a quick preset to quickly get to a fast render or choose an option quickly to go to higher quality. Needs snapping to be slightly quicker in vertex maybe have more of a smart snapping where you dont have to choose the mode modo it just optimises to the nearest under mouse between vector, mid point and polygon center.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

I highly recommend modo, yes there are some features that could be better but out of all the packages I have used over the years modo offers me the most power for price. You can get some very good results without having vray or octane just from the built in renderer if you could only afford modo.

Hopefully they will integrate more mac support magic mouse, M1 support etc but overall I am very happy with it.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Quick preview enables faster appearance edits. replicators allow large amount of meshes to be on screen without the overhead of any mesh on screen.

  ### 15. Modo : "Great cosmic hopes, in a tiny vital team"

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

It is software born of brilliant minds, and it shows. Great for concept art, modeling, rendering, and product design. It has a Layers material editor very similar to Photoshop, unique in the market, and very powerful.
Great polygon modeler with a good UV editor.
Very good but a little dated the internal Render Engine (currently they are working on a new render engine).
Potentially it has very valid character animation tools, sadly mortified by performances that are not exactly optimal on complex models.
Valid the particle system and its instances system called Replicator.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

The slowness of its development. A definitive upgrade that solves its basic problem with performances on complex scenes is missing.
Foundry's sales strategies don't foster the interest of individual freelancers, but they seem to want to cater to studios.
There is no real development roadmap that clearly defines the markets where Modo will compete in the future.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Modo as my main 3D software. It is immediate and effective for most of my goals. I sincerely hope that Foundry will be able to develop it by investing more in its development.

  ### 16. A nice software full of potential but lacking support and developers

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Giovanni De S. | Professor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The modelling and also the animation part and especially the Vray integration.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Some procedures are unnecessary complicate, many things could be done in an easier way and this is the reason that scaries many new user I tried to involve in Modo....

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Takes lot of effort before paying, some tools are weak now as they are not so much developed but I noticed an increase in performances and I hope that future versions will use the new core changes of the software.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Im creating nice images and animations and using Vray I can achive an high quality and use assetts that are easy to find.

  ### 17. My Go-To 3D Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** William V. | Senior 3D Production Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The Modo UI is very intuitive and the software has all the features I need to accomplish the projects I work on.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Animation playback can be slow at times on scenes with multiple characters. While Modo does have painting and sculpting tools, they could be updated to increase their usability.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

If you are looking for a powerful 3D solution, get the 30 trial of Modo and dive in.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I primarily use Modo for asset creation (Product Visualization) and believe it to be the perfect solution for that type of work. I also work with and train 2D designers and illustrators and have found it to be the easiest 3D application for a traditional artist to pick up quickly.

  ### 18. With a team of 7 people all working in Modo, our experience was awful

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David D. | Managing Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 21, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modelling is fine. The Shader Tree is good but hard to get used to. The deformation system is ok.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Animation is almost useless. External referencing of assets made Modo barely usable as a collaborative team teal. Modo is astonishingly slow compared to other 3D animation tools.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Do not try to use Modo for animation. It is ok for modelling.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were animating a 22min 2.5D animated TV show with rigged humanoid characters. Using Modo as an end-to-end tool was a big mistake.

  ### 19. Great, but needs a clearer future.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Excellent modeling tools, UV, texturing, shading and rendering are all robust with good options and workflow. Rigging and animation work well. Overall cost of licensing is competitive with other packages.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Modo really slows down when trying to use; volume rendering, anything more than simple deformation rigs, complex particle systems. Implementation of up-to-date dynamics (fluids, for example) and dynamic particle systems is lacking - the current features for these are limited and hard to control. Documentation of some features is very poor, and sometimes difficult to even find useful demos or tutorials online.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Modo every day in my work as a 3D animator for industrial and engineering clients.

  ### 20. Modo gives you the best 3D design experince.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cristian B. | Creative and Product Development Manager for Toys, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The combination hard modeling, procedual, SDS, and fusion on a single modeling platform with real time previews.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

fusion modeling tends to crash, It would be good to get a prompt with more sugestions on how to solve the issue or have some AI on the back end.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Modo is a complete 3D modeling solution.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Toy design with real-time previews.

  ### 21. I use MODO to make a living.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 27, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The capabilities and the very helpful community of users.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

It is overly complex. The constantly change menus are difficult to navigate at times

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Start slow, learn the lingo. For me at least, I had to learn what things were called before I could ask a question that helped me. The community of users has some serious technical and artistic talent and are very helpful. This goes a long way to offsetting the complexity of MODO at the outset.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I do explainer animations for technology companies. MODO provides ways to demonstrate complex processes.

  ### 22. Once you give it a try you won’t go back

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sarah L. | A, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 22, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The moveable work plane for complex models

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

It takes a while to learn and adjust to the space bar drop tool

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can make models to the mm and snap to the grid so I know they are square and sized correctly.

  ### 23. The best modeler around

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The modeling and Modo's renderer, I'm also pretty fond of the way texturing works out of the box

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

A greater focus on core feature improvements and more integrations with 3rd party renderers

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's where every project starts, though nowadays I render in blender

  ### 24. Great but needs to be rebuilt so it can handle bigger scenes

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonathan k. | PHOTOGRAPHER, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Modo?**

the interface and viewport are so simple and easy to use

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

the dynamics are totaly awful and just unusable

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Modo is excellent for modeling, shading, and rendering. No good for dynamics ... simulations etc

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its quite intuitive with lighting and layouts of objects to produce ideas . I can quickly itterate ideas to make many final images .

  ### 25. yes

**What do you like best about Modo?**

A lot of great tools for modeling, both direct modeling and procedural modeling. Every tool can be combined with others in a tool pipe, in this way you can create your own custom tools and presets. The main features are the variety of selections tools, great hotkeys customization, a quick definition of action centers, falloff and placement of the workplane. Plus many other features like mesh operations, schematic nodes, meshfusion, etc

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Performance with high poly counts: the viewport can slow down when there are a lot of items in the scene.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can model for product design and rendering with ease. It's great hard surface and soft surfaces products, like upholstered furniture etc.

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Nice workflow, all integrated in 1 software, sculpt and paint 3d too. Using mesh fusion in modelling, faster render and much more.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Actually animation section can be more powerfull same tools like Maya 3D, but complete works. Then your can start a project from zero to animated finished without problem.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using for replace Lightwave 3D, the modelling 3D and tools are more better and powerfull, this improve our speed in 3D modelling, texturing and make 3D object for realtime use. More faster then more works finished!

  ### 38. The best user interface in 3D modeling program

**Reviewed Date:** September 29, 2019

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Hi like the way Modo manage selections: if nothing is selected, everything is selected!

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

I dislike the internal renderer, it's very slow and it not support the GPU render.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

The best tools of Modo are retopology pen, unwrap uv and schematic view with Mesh Fusion.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With modo I speed up my workflow, especially hard surface modelling.

  ### 39. Very intuitive modeling package!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jamarr T. | Graphic/Motion Designer, Photographer, Graphic Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 25, 2018

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo hand's down is one of the best modeling packages I've used in my years of 3D modeling/creation. When it comes to organic/hard-surface modeling/retopology, it has some of the best tools available of any AIO 3D software. One of the better perks I enjoy about Modo is how many of the most common tools are naturally assigned to hotkeys that just make sense. This helps take a lot of the "thinking" out of what you're doing and just allows you to work. The assigned keys for navigation make it tablet-friendly as well. Modo is also highly customizable, really allowing you to hone it in to your personal way of working. I've never been a huge fan of setting up UVs, but Modo has made this process painless to the point of therapeutic. And last but definitely not least, Modo has one of the best native renderers I've worked with as well, easily holding its own with the likes of rendering engines such as Arnold or Vray.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

After the modeling/UVing phase, Modo somewhat falls apart for me just a little bit. Most 3D software these days have a node-based approach to texturing that makes the process easier. Modo can be a little clunky when it comes to setting up textures, and as a result, there are other packages I'd still prefer to work in after the modeling phase.
Modo's animation toolsets has been growing over the years, but compared to an industry-standard software like Maya, Modo's animation toolsets still don't really hold a candle to the likes of Maya, unfortunately.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Modo may be pretty hefty price-wise when it comes to utilizing it for solely its strong-points. For some it may be worth looking at alternative solutions, but I'd definitely give Modo's free trial a go first.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've been utilizing Modo in my pipeline for some client projects as well as personal projects, delving into tasks such as character creation/retopology as well as environment/prop creation. It's made the creation process much easier to maintain

  ### 40. Excellent tools for modeling and rendering

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ellery C. | Assistant Professor, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The modeling tools are well thought out and implemented. The tool system is based on a a user-customizeable platform that allows for a lot of artist-end modification without a lot of work. The rendering system is also very good. With minimal effort will produce nice quality results and with a little work it can produce some of the best 3D renderings of any package currently available

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Working with very large scenes can often be a bit difficult and I would like to see some future development in that area. Also, the dynamics and simulation options (especially fluids and liquid simulation) could be improved upon in order to really round out the package as a full featured all-in-one toolset.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Download the free trial and watch a few training videos. It is easy to pick up (as far as 3D software goes) the modeling tools are fantastic and the renderer produces great results right off the bat!

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The modeling tools are fast, intuitive and adaptable. The flexible and powerful rendering engine makes it excellent for previsualization, ideation and photo-real rendering. I have used modo for a variety of projects including producta and architectural visualization, visual effects, and game design and for all all of the use ncases in modeling, texture and material design, lighting, and rendering it has been great.

  ### 41. Modo Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 19, 2018

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo is a pretty straight forward 3D modeling program. I found it pretty easy to get started and once I learned the basics, the rest started coming very quickly.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Not a lot of dislikes. It's a very extensive program, so anything I would have complaints about, are probably due to my lack of knowledge. Seems I'm learning more all the time, so what I thought was an issue before, is actually something that has been addressed, but I just didn't know it yet.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Great 3D modeling program! I don't have a ton of experience with others, but I thought this one was very easy to use based on some of the research I did on other modeling programs.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mostly product designs and 3D package and product renders.

  ### 42. Good Modeling Software With A Great Built-In Renderer

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Spenser W. | Freelance Videographer, Fine Art, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Modo?**

I love the action centers in Modo. All the modeling tools in Modo are great, but the action centers are really a game changer for modeling individual mesh items or different parts of a mesh. The modeling tools are definitely the best part of the software, with the built-in renderer a close second. It's a great ray tracing renderer that works well with Modo's shader tree, and allows for quick iteration. The program is known most for its modeling toolset, but has both animation and some simulation tools as well. Recently, new procedural modeling tools have also been introduced, making a more non-destructive workflow possible. For the most part, Modo is fairly easy to learn. Those with a basic knowledge of 3D should be able to get into it fairly easily, as the modeling tools are pretty straightforward in most instances, and there are plenty of resources for those who know nothing, any software will be difficult to learn, and rewarding to get to know well.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Modo's UI can get pretty cluttered, and it's a bit of a hassle getting to know all its quirks. However, once you learn it, it's very customizable. One other annoyance is that while the bevel tool works well in most cases, it's not the best in certain instances, and will give some poor results in some cases. Although they are very powerful, the falloff tools can be difficult to get to work correctly from time to time. Also, like most software packages, there are some longstanding bugs that haven't been fixed by the developers.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Use the resources of the tight knit Modo community. The forums are very helpful,

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Modo allows me to model and iterate quickly, which allows for far more freedom than I would have with many other 3D software packages.

**Official Response from Shane G:**

> Thanks for the review! We are happy you like the product thus far and appreciate the feedback. We are also excited to say that the bevel tools will be getting some attention here very soon.

  ### 43. Effortless 3D Modelling and Texturing, and a great realistic renderer

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew B. | Self employed, Performing Arts, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 23, 2017

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo offers one of the fastest WSIWYG 3D modellers on the market, the viewport is second to none for previewing a realistic rendered preview. New topology tools for scanned meshes, improved bezier and spline support, and a new nondestructive modelling stack bring Modo up to what many other applications offer for features and add to what has been an excellent tool in our workflow for years.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Modo is NOT my application of choice for end-to-end workflow. A static render in Modo looks great, but for animation and especially character driven and procedural dynamics (think XSI's ICE) there are toolsets on the market that offer not only greater power in those areas, but a workflow that will take you from start to finish without needing Modo. Modo's BIGGEST strength is its modelling with realistic preview, and this also one of its biggest limitations, Get outside of the tools on offer here and you'll find you will want to move your scene data into another application to get the results you're expecting.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

It's incredibly easy to just download the demo version and get started with free training available, better yet if you have Lynda.com or Digitaltutors access you'll find a wealth of training material.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

While it does integrate nicely with The Foundry's other products (Nuke etc), my workflow often encompasses products from other vendors like Autodesk (Maya, 3DSMax & Softimage), Side Effects (Houdini), Black Magic (Fusion & Resolve) and more, and I have to exchange data with professionals who use these other workflows all the time. So it will require some knowledge about how to properly prepare assets within Modo to move those assets and that data to other workflows.

  ### 44. MODO for all-purpose 3D production

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** William V. | Founder.Artist.Instructor, Animation, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 09, 2017

**What do you like best about Modo?**

MODO is my go to 3D software for all aspects of production. The modeling tools are by far the best Subdivision modeling tools available and the built-in renderer enables me to create beautiful renders quickly.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

As a character artist, I love the rigging and animation tools MODO offers. That said, I'd love for the deformation engine to be updated to allow for multiple characters to be animated in a single scene.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Download the trial and give it a test drive.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use MODO for product visualization and love how easy it has been to get 50+ designers up to speed in the software in a short period of time.

  ### 45. Versatile 3D software

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lina P. | Graphic design freelancer, Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

What I really like about Modo is its flexibility. The software has a wide range of useful features that allows companies, freelances and students to work at any stage of the 3D process with any sort of purpose in a effortless and clear way. Features like modeling, texturing, sculpting, painting, rendering, baking, animation, effects and so on have been carefully developed through time to offer users one of the most comfortable and logical experience in 3D software.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Sometimes when I am playing around with meshes, I would want to experiment and change the initial parameters I used at the beginning but I could not do that. What I do is to build some variations from scratch and then decide which one I like the most. It is not a big deal. However it would be better if Modo allowed me to change always every parameter at any stage of the process. It would definitely make me save so much time.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The most important problem I solved with Modo was the issue I had every time I would wanted to try a new 3D software. I needed to spend time and sometimes even money in tutorials to figure out how it works.
With Modo was different story. The software has one of the most friendly interface I have ever tried before. It allows new users to feel comfortable and learn how to used it easily.

Besides that, there is an ever-growing Modo community of professional and amateur people that use modo for different industries and with diverse purposes. This is an important benefit for ussers because that means a wide possibility to learn and to exchange assets handily.

  ### 46. A good tool for games,film and 3d printing

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Calin I. | Freelance creature designer, Animation, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 29, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

I like the live preview renderer and this was the main reason I've decided to use this software.
Modeling in Modo is very easy and fun.I always retopologise my character models in Modo.
Another thing is the thinking behind all of the tools in Modo.Everything works
In the latest version Modo has tools for 3d printing and for game artists and is becoming a complete solution.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

In the animation department Modo is not the best. It's a little slow and the character rigging is lacking in more complex deformers that are present in other software products.
Rendering hair is a classic issue in Modo. You can get a great result but you have to pay for it in render time.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am mainly working as chracter designer for games and film.Modo is helpful as it alows me to quickly shade and render characters.
3D printing is another field I am interested in and with the addition of Mesh Fusion, Modo is now a powerful tool.

  ### 47. Once I tried Modo, I dropped Maya and haven't looked back.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeremiah C. | Assistant Producer, Gambling & Casinos, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

The workflow and UI are very well designed. It's obvious that Modo was designed with artists in mind, so much of it just makes sense. Impressive for such a complicated piece of software. Polygon and Subdivision modelling, in particular, is quick and powerful once you get a hang of the work plane, action center, item list, selections, and scenes. Also, the built-in renderer is fantastic.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

More advanced features like particles, dynamics, and fur tend to be a bit more complicated than strictly seems necessary. Rigging and animation are also overly complicated and are the only things I still prefer to do in Maya.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Try out Modo's trial and see if it will work for you. Pay particular attention to the Work Plane, Action Center, and Item List. Figuring these features out will make all the difference in how much you get out of using Modo.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Modo's relative speed and high-quality rendering out of the box save time and effort when iterating on designs. UV mapping is fast and powerful, and the render preview window makes seeing the results of your changes simple. Especially useful for dealing with impatient or non-techie coworkers.

  ### 48. I use Modo for packaging design visualisation.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michael A. | Freelance Creative Artworker & Retoucher, Graphic Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Modo has a similar feel to Photoshop in the way you can layer up textures to create a final outcome. You can mask and paint on a surface. The UI is very user friendly, you can set it to how you like it. Great modelling tools including the amazing Mesh Fusion.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

The way it handles type. It would be great if you could use any font and bevel and extrude in any direction, add effects and keep the font live. Cinema 4D seems a lot better suited for this type of work.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

I've looked at other 3D software and Modo seems like one of the easier to learn. There is still a lot of technical stuff to get your head around but coming from a Photoshop background I liked the way Modo looked and reacted.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can now create photographic quality imagery of packaging before the products have been printed and gone to market. Previously clients have had to print test labels and mockup onto photography of existing product. This involves loads of extra retouching and set up costs.

  ### 49. MODO is the 3D software for the future

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Stefan V. | 3D Consultant, Design, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

MODO can compete with major packages and is very future-oriented. The latest version aims for better VR integration which is the exact market we're involved in. Aside from that I very much like the fact that Luxology (the company name before TheFoundry bought it) started with nexus - a digital software framework - before creating modo. This makes for a very solid and fluid foundation from a users perspective and it allows the developers to integrate tools very nicely into every aspect of the pipeline.

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

It's not as stable as I'd like, but this can be said of many 3D packages. Working with large scenes in which you use file references takes a bit of getting used to because of the different approach in shader-handling. You do have nodal shading at your disposal, but the most common practice can be compared to using a photoshop layered approach.

I also find the passes system quite prone to mistakes (ie. user errors), as you have to add or auto-record channels of which you would change parameters in between pass-groups or states.

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Modo can be compared with other highend packages like 3dstudio max, maya, cinema4d, lightwave. It has a shorter history, but the engineering team has a long-lasting history in the 3D market having worked on lightwave extensively. This ensures they started with a fresh look about where they wanted to differentiate at the beginning and this clear view has remained with the company ever since.

Users should definitely give it a try and compare it. Don't give up after a few test-runs because the shortcuts are different or you are stuck. Remember that every software takes a bit of getting used to, but in the end it'll be well worth it!

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We create 3D visualisations and Virtual Reality solutions for Businesses. Our clients benefit from being able to tell a story through photorealistic images and videos of non-existing objects.

  ### 50. Leaved 3ds max for Modo and I'm really satisfied with it

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mohamed A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2016

**What do you like best about Modo?**

Layered shader tree
Modo's render engine
Preview renderer
Replicators
Sence management workflow
The modelling toolbox and workflow

**What do you dislike about Modo?**

Performance in large scenes
File loading and saving speed
Scene translation times
Lots of single threaded operations (maybe it's the reason of the previous two)
missing the procedural and parametric modelling modifiers a little bit

**Recommendations to others considering Modo:**

Modo is the best balanced all in one package. using Modo you should expect the best shading and look development workflow over there, a robust render engine, the most powerful modeling tool-sets and workflow in addition to the Unique Interface, also it have natively a lot of essential and powerful tools you won't find it in the competitors softwares and the most fascinating thing it's price.

**What problems is Modo solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I need a software that I can rely on it in both ways Artistically/Technically to produce a huge realistic environments and to speedup my overall workflow. I found that Modo is very capable to do all of that and only I wish if there some more optimization for performance and stability in the future.
