## MicroStation Reviews
  ### 1. Helpful for 3D Designs but Needs Improved Xref Functionality

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 21, 2026

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I find that layers have been particularly helpful in separating out lighting, furniture, flooring, etc. Layers keep the drawing clean, but all in one spot, so I can easily turn the layer off or on depending on which category I'm needing to show. It can get overwhelming with every layer turned on, so being able to isolate a specific piece of the project is nice. I also like using blocks for quickly placing furniture to navigate traffic patterns throughout the home. Blocks are great for quickly pulling in when needing to represent a potential furniture layout. This saves me time so I'm not having to draw each piece from scratch. The initial setup of MicroStation was easy, with no challenges.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Trying to attach Xrefs has always been a struggle as they don't import as easily as I'd like. I think the attachment process could be more user-friendly.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MicroStation helps me show 3D versions of design concepts to clients who struggle to visualize ideas. I find layers keep drawings clean, allowing easy isolation of project parts, and blocks save time by quickly adding furniture layouts.

  ### 2. Non leading CAD software

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 12, 2024

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I mean you are able to develop CAD drawings with it

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

It uses other file formats. DGN instead of DWG. Autocad and civil 3d seem to be there standard in my opinion. So when I get DGN files it's frustrating and time wasting. Autodesk and Microsation should share the same file extension or merge. This would save a lot of headache in the industry.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

You can use it to data prep and make layout accurate.

  ### 3. Not a fan

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Military | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I like how the software overall is setup but there are too many issues with using customer standards. Per my employer, we are not allowed to use the out of the box standard that Bentley comes with and there for run into issues time and time again.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Per my employer, we are not allowed to use the out of the box standard that Bentley comes with and there for run into issues time and time again. We work with Bentley to have the standards working correctly but many times they fail to do so.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating design sets and computing quantities are the two biggest uses.

  ### 4. Good Product but no follow thru or direction

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Referencing, Original Structure before Autocad

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Product is following autocad. Nothing but a drafting program with NO tools. sticks and text. Decent 2d and 3d but no tools to create drawings. Designers obviously never look at production tools in creating their product

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Push for improvements. Make sure you don't require extra software to do basic things. Require support that responds quickly. Stop Bentley relying on forums for support

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not much any more. Decent 2d and falls short. Referncing was great but distroyed ability to modify drawings as dimensioning is lost. Just a cad package now

  ### 5. MicroStation

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff L. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2017

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

all basic tools and functions are listed on the front-page.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

it seems layout functions not very handy, and also tools are not easy to find if you compare to ArcMap.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Polygon boundaries and points attributes creating and editing, MicroStation is fast and straightforward

  ### 6. I worked with Microstation for several months on another job

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brad C. | CAD Engineer, Construction, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 10, 2015

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

It is my understanding that Microstation has changed very little over the years. This is one reason it is appealing to some people. Once you grasp the basic concept, it is likely to remain the same. The basic drawing commands are very useful. I like the array of snapping options as well as the multiple cursor options.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I do dislike the fact that there are very little keyboard commands, and the ones there are, are hard to remember. I do not like having to constantly click on icons. It is very inconvenient that you can not have multiple sheets in the same drawing. If you have a long road or pipeline you have to have many different sheets that must be edited.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

I wouldn't personally recommend others to use the product, and I truly believe the only reason it is still around is because the DOT uses it. In my experience most people now open the Microstation files in AutoCAD now that they are compatible.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The majority of what microstation was used for was oil and gas projects. Most of these projects consisted of at least 50 sheets, and would take hours to make minor changes to. Microstation needs to come up with some form of a "sheet set" or way to auto populate fields across multiple drawings.

  ### 7. Good software, but still lagging behind competitors in innovation

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 09, 2015

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Having first started my architecture career using Microstation V8 and later V8i, I have always had a preference for button-based CAD software over command line text inputs. Microstation has been intuitive to use and even after using other programs for years I've found it easy to pick back up and use. The menus and customization abilities of Microstation have been extremely useful in increasing efficiency. Bentley has been successful in maintaining a loyal base of users, and I've found knowing Bentley has been a valuable asset in my career as many major clients still request their software specifically. Inter-operability between AutoCAD, Revit, and Microstation has also given major flexibility ensuring we always have the right software for the job.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Although the lack of a command line for text prompts is useful at times, it would be nice to have greater input abilities when tasks are repetitive. The snap commands and accuracy of drafting could also be improved as sometimes even the smallest tasks of aligning elements or joining elements can be tedious.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

In terms of greater flexibility between 2D and 3D platforms there are better software programs available. Microstation does have a loyal base of clients, and it is easy to use but if complex projects are being completed there may be better products available

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Bentley Microstation is great for laying out complex engineering problems that I encounter with industrial work. Process lines in particular can be quickly diagrammed and then built upon with other Bentley Software such as Architecture or Triforma.

  ### 8. Microstation Review

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonathan K. | Research and Development Engineering Manager, NPI Engineering Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2015

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

some small features are useful, including the autosnap and dragging.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Just about the entire software package. The simple nature of the models and the inaccuracy of some of the output is not very useful when compared with most every other software suite on the market. 3 dimensional modeling is a chore, and finding commands to do simple manipulation can be quite cumbersome. Not really the most ideal product for machine design and modeling complex systems. Still has a long way to go to compete

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

If models are complex this is not the program to use

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Modeling and simulation
