In the past, I kept all of my notes in one large Word document, but I realized that was not very efficient. OneNote has definitely helped me to get organized. Being able to see all the categories of my notes as colorful tabs has been great and is less overwhelming than staring at one, unorganized giant Word document. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** It took me a while to understand the concept of the pages on the righthand side of the platform, but I'm getting used to it. The fact that this tool has search functionality is very important to me, but I wish that the search tool was a bit cleaner. It's kind of dry and not very descriptive when you perform a search. But it gets the job done. Also, overall, the platform is a bit stiff and it is a bit difficult to format your text. In that way, it's different, and I think a bit inferior, than Microsoft Word. **What problems is Microsoft OneNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** Organization! This is the biggest advantage to using OneNote. It's quicker to find what you're looking for, and sorting your content by tabs is very helpful. ### 4. It's a great tool for organizing multiple projects and deliverables since you can create tabs (and color code them), create outlines, task tracking features (with actual check boxes - minor but super convenient feature), and it enables easy searching of individual tab/notebook sections or the entire document if needed. I use it as my primary means of tracking projects, taking notes in meetings, linking to additional resources, and dividing out various aspects of my day to day work without needing to manage hundreds of different documents. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** There are occasional "bugs" in the interface that will cause a random static line or formatting issue to appear that's clearly embedded within the OneNote program and isn't visible elsewhere on your computer screen or in other apps. It's not very common, and it doesn't actually impair the program functionality, but from an aesthetic standpoint it can be a little annoying. Another issue is that sometimes when you change outline formatting, it impacts the earlier items in a list (by dragging them over or back a few spaces). Again, not major and no lasting functional issues - but can be frustrating from a purely aesthetic standpoint. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** It's the best note taking and organizational tool that I've ever used. If you're planning to use it for your own individual organizational purposes - it's great. If you're looking for something that can have multiple collaborators or be accessed online, I can't speak to its suitability for those features. **What problems is Microsoft OneNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** OneNote is an excellent tool for organizing and tracking projects with many parts. I don't use it for super detailed project documents that need to be shared out with other teams, but I use it as a place to store my own high level notes, organize and store links to other resources and project trackers, and keep everything I need top of mind and easy access to in a single, easily organized document. ### 5. I love how I can have multiple different tabs for different projects. I also like that you can copy and paste photos right into it because I’ll often screenshot things from a meeting. It also has good formatting by default. I’ll copy/paste computer code into it and it holds the same format. It’s been such a crucial tool for me at work that I even use it for my graduate school classes now too. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** Honestly there’s nothing I really dislike about it but obviously there are some things that could be better. I wish you could completely hide the side bar that had the folder names because I’ll often have multiple screens open so I need to make it very narrow and that side bar takes up a lot of room. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** Give it a try and actually keep up with it. Obviously it doesn’t take notes for you. Once I'm done with note-taking I can scale the size of the note up or down very easily and cover a whole topic blackboard style and keep them that way for future reference. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** Exporting files to PDF is good with normal-sized notes but sometimes my notes break the usual format and the PDF exported notes look bad in vertical and horizontal formats and I have not found a way to custom export them to the dimensions I want yet, it could be easier to customize that. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** If you use a Wacom tablet as I do OneNote recognizes it immediately in contrast with other Applications that take it like normal mouse input and ignores the pressure levels. **What problems is Microsoft OneNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** A benefit I have found is that taking notes with a Wacom is really easy and doesn't need any special setup. ### 9. It'll be there - no need to save anything in numerous locations that you inevitably will forget and not be able to recall when you need it. OneNote simplifies this with its notebooks, sections and pages approach. You can manage themes and topics and put all of your thoughts/research work/notes in those places for easy access later on. Multi-people collaboration works works very well, though it has some quirks to it, but no big complains. Overall, this software from Microsoft does what it is supposed to and does it very well. Meeting notes integration with Outlook and Teams is also handy. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** Now comes the part where OneNote is not perfect and falls a little short on my expectations. Sharing and collaboration is a little painful when you only want to share a specific page/section and not the entire notebook. You are left with very few options to handle that scenario. The editing and table structures are not as capable as Excel, but this is an entirely different software which is not supposed to be Excel, so it is somewhat acceptable. The web OneNote is great, but the mobile app, especially the Android one is a pain. More than half the times content from OneNote won't sync on the app. Entire pages, sections won't show up. And, all you are left with is to open the web version on phone. Plus it has the disadvantages of needing to be on the computer, logging in, etc. Vs. just opening up my book to assess my note. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** Just be cautious that you don't try to use this tool to solve all 'note taking'. You can use it in business meetings for taking down minutes of meeting, sorting the notes and then sharing with the team, the team can them collaborate on the notes and users can add points that might havebeen missed or any other information or details. We also use this as class notebooks for students where the instructor can share the notes for the class in one notebook which is then shared with the entire class to read, saves a lot of effort and everything can be organised really well. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** Can be a bit overwhelming at first and it is a bit difficult to grasp because of so many features but once you explore and learn about the shortcuts it saves so much time and reduces effort and makes taking notes really easy. The sections, notebooks, and synchronization across devices work great and you have ample possibilities. Simultaneous editing by multiple people also works well and it does a fairly okay job at labeling who made those changes, it's not the best, but good enough for basic needs. Overall, it is a good tool and its integration with other O365 apps is very good, especially the one with Outlook and Teams for taking meeting notes. **What do you dislike about Microsoft OneNote?** There isn't much to dislike, but there are some small bits that seem to limit. First, granted this is not Excel and the functionality is limited, but tables in OneNote offer very limited flexibility and if you really want to play with cell merging and stuff, I have to go to excel, do that and paste in OneNote. Second, OneNote always has the latest copy, unless you yourself add dates/timing for changes you make, you'll not be able to get to the previous copy or state of the pages/content. This is where Word, Excel actually excel (pun intended!) - you can see all the version history when they're put on OneDrive Business. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** This comes with the complete O365 Suite and is a great tool that provides a lot of possibilities without being afraid of forgetting to save and managing hundreds of files in different places. The OneNote 2016 desktop version which is no longer being developed had some features missing from the Windows 10 app and crucially had the optional Onetastic plugin which added many new features for power users. As the Windows 10 app wants all your notebooks to be in the cloud, some have concerns over security and backups. It isn't obvious to typical users where notebooks are stores and how to make backups. This may be a concern to some as the number of notebooks and the amount of data being stored builds up over time. While OneNote is super easy to use at a basic level, most users will need some instruction to get the most out of the many features available. In common with all the Microsoft 365 subscription apps, there are frequent updates with new features and functionality being added all the time. While this is often a good thing, it does require some investment of time to keep up to date with all the changes. **Recommendations to others considering Microsoft OneNote:** Just use it. 90% of people who start using OneNote love it and can immediately see the productivity gains. When you start sharing and collaborating with colleagues this increases exponentially.
