The part of share point it seems many companies use it as a framework to build something over. I’m sure that saves times for a company that maybe doesn’t have the time/money into a system from scratch Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Many times I’ve seen share point limit creativity that might be needed to customize it to each companies needs. It also can be glitchy Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Sharepoint is a novel concept which allows project teams to create a shared page, information and files, similar to a network except through a cloud. In my experience of Sharepoint, it is one step above a shared network of files in your company. Instead of scrolling through files and files on a network supported by network drives, Sharepoint allows the corporation to manage and organize critical files.

There is also some level of security in which an administrator has the rights to certain pages and users will need to request. However this feature can also be a burden to users to. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Sharepoint, while the concept is good, its usability has little to support the concept. It is not intuitive to use and surprisingly not integrated with the rest of the Microsoft Office products. For example, the main access to our specific sharepoint sites is through a link. There are many files and sharepoint links which can be connecte to one another but this linkage will need to be manually set in place it seems.

There are not a lot of support in best practices or tutorials in how to navigate through the sharepoint. There are several features and options but it is not intuitive in how to best use these features or how the features are connected. Often times when using the sharepoint, one could also lose the initial trail/ original page and will need to input the link again to return to desired page.

It is also odd to me that Microsft One Drive and Sharepoint are not linked in their features to improve the overall experience of file management, file sharing and real time updating. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would recommend reading through tutorials and going through videos to understand its capabilities and features as it is not intuitive and easy to pick up on the fly. Often times Microsoft Share Point is packaged together with Microsoft Office and so it may be an additional software which one can get when purchasing the software suite. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sharepoint is great in that it creates an online cloud file management for project teams. This is beneficial when project teams are cross functional and work collaboratively on files over a long duration. There is definitely good ideas for file management and easy access to project files record and information if it was easier to use. What do you like best?

Seems like a lot of ability to create cross section "sites" for the different capabilities of a business. There is honestly not that much good for a service like this, given that there is very little capability on top of it being often problematic. If I were to explicitly say what the benefit of information storage is, it should be that ease of access is at the top of the list - and i suppose it technically is easy to access, but the way it is accessed and utilized makes things problematic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Where to start - transferring or copying information is a huge hassle. Things can get so stacked up in different folders that often you have to use the search bar to find information. Closing out and deleting documents is often difficult if users have recently logged off, as it makes it nearly impossible to do so with an error message. SharePoint also populates deleted files back into the live site, if you have someone who has not updated their offline folder sync and reupdates after you have deleted documents. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Honestly would probably say to look elsewhere. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Organization is the chief problem that SharePoint is supposed to solve, and I guess in some ways it has helped - but more often than not, it has been rather difficult to use. The few benefits are that you are able to put a lot of information in an organized matter with specific sites - but nothing site-specific that another organization could likely duplicate - which is a rather strong indictment of SharePoint. It's a good platform for internal communications and business collaboration. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Sharepoint is cumbersome and not very easy to navigate. Regardless of wifi strength, files take a while to load and file downloading and renaming are time-consuming. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

There are so many collaborative platforms out there for business organizations to use internally - do your due diligence and research which may be the best fit for you. SharePoint may not be best fit for your small business. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

I have to use it for work. When used consistently there are some benefits like the nice interface and the ability to build out pages and organize your info and documents to present in different ways. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Maybe I'm just used to Google products but I find SharePoint super confusing. I struggle to remember where to go to find my documents and the search feature doesn't always get me to the right place either, such as when I'm looking for a page that was shared with me by another team. I also find the sharing settings counterintuitive and struggle to get people set up with the right access; the "people with the link can access" option doesn't work as expected. I would frequently try to save changes to the sharing settings of something and it wouldn't show the changes because of my permissions but it would show to others.. just so confusing. Lastly I don't like how it locks one user out while another is editing and doesn't manage version history well. Google allows editing at the same time and makes it easy to see revision history. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

A shared space to store documents that my team needs access to, plus the flexibility to present those docs on a page rather than just in folders Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Sharepoint is integrated into our e-mail interface, which does make it (theoretically) easy to manage, collate, store, and integrate documents from attachments and other storage media and share those through e-mail or dedicated Sharepoint sites. Having separate sites / folders for various tasks/committees/projects is also useful for keeping things organized. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The User Experience is subpar-- it is cumbersome and requires what seems like ten times as many clicks to get anywhere. It is not very intuitive, and seems complex in a very unneeded way. It is difficult to switch between tasks and manage multiple workflows. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I think you need a really good administrator to weigh the benefits and costs of the software versus its complexity-- forcing this software on projects that don't require a large amount of data security would be a mistake (over more user-friendly ways of managing documents). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sharepoint has allowed for organized approached when working on projects across the institution, with people in different departments and spaces. It's more of a somewhat convenient library that we can all draw on-- and I think the security features are an attractive aspect to the IT folks (when projects involve only faculty, we tend to rely on other platforms that are more user friendly and only use Sharepoint when we have to [like when we are dealing with sensitive information / HR stuff]).

I will say that for sensitive projects where data security is tantamount, Sharepoint has been a very good upgrade (before we had to review files in an office where the files were kept under lock and key). Being able to securely access documents and data remotely is a huge benefit. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

The ability to upload content on the main page is convenient and the ability to export files to Excel is useful. The ability to open a file and have multiple people working on it is a benefit for team projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

You can only use Windows Explorer to open file explorer. The option of file explorer is the only saving grace to Sharepoint. With file explorer, it is much easier to navigate and to search. The search option inside of Sharepoint takes very long and is inefficient. The compact list, tile view and standard list view add no value to the platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are changing over from a network drive to Sharepoint in an attempt to reduce the number of network drives to one, with all content on the same drive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

You can make pages and let non-tech people create and manage pages. It's really nice to be able to set up a page for a small group and let them manage it however they see fit without them asking me to do more tasks for them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

As with all Microsoft products, the UI is not intuitive and overly complicated. The tools that I would look for would be in different spots and adjusting the settings are different than I would guess. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would define very clearly what you want to use it for and have the salespeople demo that for you so you can make sure it really does what you need. If it can do other things, that's a bonus, but make sure it can do what you need it to do. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Groups at work having their own online space. They wanted a space to upload documents, link events, and show other people that need to know what that group does. What do you like best?

Sharepoint is a one-stop shop where a business can connect everything they are doing. Ours has pages and subpages for every department and group, with dedicated pages available for each project. These can store documents and data, and allow the user to edit them online or on the desktop. It seems that you can make as big or deep a hierarchy as you want, and upload just about anything onto it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There is no meaningful search feature. Search exists but 99% of the time does not find me what I am looking for. The back button almost always takes me back to the main page so I lose where I am in the hierarchy. It takes many steps to edit a document set, with a series of button clicks that are far from obvious. For example, it takes me 5 clicks just to add my name to an item asking me if I am interested in something. When there are a huge number of subpages listed on one main page, the sort features are almost useless. So in short, if you don't already know what you are looking for and where it is in the hierarchy, it is almost impossible to find it. An advanced search feature that actually descends the whole hierarchy and lets you select what parts of the pages/docs you are looking for is desperately needed. The user should be able to control how much metadata is shown and better control sorting and searching. The window sizes are not dynamically resized to my screen so there is a lot of left and right sliding. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My business has a huge amount of work that is shared across many branches and physical locations. Many people are often interested in working on the same projects but can't directly tell each other because we are so spread out. Many times someone has performed some work on a project that someone else needs later. Sharepoint lets us organize all of this in a WYSIWYG way. In that respect, it has made us enormously more efficient and streamlined. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I like that Sharepoint is integrated with the rest of our Microsoft products, so all our documents play nicely with the online portal as well as Outlook. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

I've never really been a fan of the UI/UX experience with Microsoft. For us in particular, I seem to get lost in a wave of permissions when trying to access folders and documents, or sharing outside the organization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

In marketing, we are trying to find a solution that best allows us to share out photo/video assets among all those who need it, as well as providing access to messaging resources for the rest of the organization. We are currently finishing onboarding the team, so honestly we have not realized many of the benefits as of yet. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I like that SP has the potential (if designed/correctly) to be a one stop shop to house all of a project’s data and the ability to collaborative tool among team members. It’s highly configurable to meet a project’s needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

In all the places I’ve worked, I’ve used different versions of SP and functionality has varied drastically. Some places the sites were designed well and they were intuitive to use, but most often times the SP site or sites were not designed well ended up being an unorganized intuitive dumping ground for project data. I also find the checking docs in and out process to be tedious. I also find that actually configuring/setting up the site structure, search, tagging etc to be tedious as well and if you’re a beginner the process is not intuitive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I wouldn’t say SP is super intuitive and depending on how the site has been designed it can be super clunky so google tutorials on how to do certain things (or hire a good SP developer/administrator) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Most often times I’ve used SP as a CMT platform for a project. However there have been cases were I’ve used it as a request and ticketing system as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

The main idea is good, ie to be able to share docs and folders and set up user access Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It's not user friendly. If you work with many files it gets complicated. My experience is that most of my colleagues had big difficulties to understand the features. It's also very slow, so everything takes longer time. The feature that you can give access to sub folders/files gets super complicated when you realize you cannot access the main folder. This feature is not clear. And you loose the path. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Educate your employees. In my company, some departments took the implementation seriously and educated the employees and they had a structured approach, I think they're doing pretty well with share point. In my department, no education was provided and it's been a mess unfortunately. The system is not intuitive at all and no one really understands how to use it properly. SharePoint has a lot of features - it incorporate lots of business tools that you would usually get from multiple, independent solutions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Not user friendly. An organization basically needs a SharePoint tech/expert to babysit the users. Too many ways to accomplish the same thing, many of which are not intuitive and you can't remember. Sharepoint acts as a great hub to strategically bring in and embed various docs, reporting and imagery from all of your MS Cloud apps when using it to create a full site. It's also great that while in Sharepoint, if you upload a file type that Microsoft Cloud products support, you can edit that file right in MS Online. Example: I uploaded a PPTX presentation to a Sharepoint account and realized an edit needed to be made. From Sharepoint, I was able to open that doc on the spot in PPT online, make the edits and save it. No need to do it on desktop and reupload. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Sharing access with others can be very confusing. You can share overall access from just about anywhere in the interface. But, defining and sharing access to specific areas is often unreliable.

The sizing of embedded content on sites can sometimes be very small (this is mostly seen when embedding reporting from apps like Power BI) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sharepoint provides a great way to share reporting data from various tools (i.e., PowerBI and Excel). And, it's a nice environment to provide controlled or gated access to content and experiences, i.e., MS Forms, presentations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
