## Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management Reviews
 ### 1. Useful for tracking resources and budget but user interface needs a makeover

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

MSP is great for tracking resources against budget to assess project burn down. All resources are in one page, team members submit time and the software makes the calculations. The reports generated are also clear and useful.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The user interface is bland and confusing. Needs a better way to submit time reports. It’s also buggy and doesn’t let you do certain things like submit time reports in non-chronological order.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It’s decent for organizing team members in a project.

 ### 2. Not a fan

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nada Chan, C. | Project Manager, Financial Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

When there are dependencies between tasks, the dates automatically shift when an adjustment is made to the timeline. I like that you can can assign someone to be accountable for each task and you can indicate the status of the task in terms of completion.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It takes a really long time to get set up and you need to know everything about the project timeline before you start inputting. It's not a tool to use when there are lots of adjustments and you use it to set up an initial plan where no concrete dates, durations, etc. are known. It's really hard to share with others who don't have Project - exporting to Excel is more administrating. Keeping Project up to date is very manual and time intensive. I usually abandon my Project files mid way into the planning phase.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Look to other tools to manage projects. MS Projects is straightforward to input tasks, etc, but I have never used it through to the end of the project because the administrative work to keep it updated was another full time job.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating a project plan that can be shared - it would be better if it didn't need to be extracted to excel in order for non project users to be able to review the plan.

 ### 3. So confusing

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Only the timeline, which even in itself is so confusing. I much prefer many other alternatives to this very complicated software

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Everything! The entire set up is absolutely horrible! Likely why they stopped using Microsoft Software for Project

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Go with something easier to use

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PRoject Management - Ability to track tasks and deadlines in real time

 ### 4. Good for gannt charts

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It's good for gannt charts and to visualize the project requirements.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It can't really compete with any other task management solutions (e..g JIRA)

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating gannt charts

 ### 5. Easy to learn-helpful for small modifications

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lauren B. | Mobility Manager, Public Policy, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The easy visibility from a Gantt chart is the best. Being able to see exactly how a project will be impacted by timeline delays, fiddling with requirements and creating milestones is very helpful.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Once you start, editing is not the easiest. Microsoft Project, like any project management software, gives you a great baseline but does not help with reporting, small issues, or document management.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Note the integration with other Microsoft items--definitely has a longer shelf life than other products that attempt to similar. That being said, it IS a Microsoft product, so it may be slightly more clunky than the sexy web-based platforms that are also available.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This definitely helps visualize a project to people outside of your area. When reporting to higher ups, pitching an idea, or just trying to get yourself organized, Microsoft Project is very helpful.

 ### 6. Static product

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Airlines/Aviation | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

GANTT charts available. Also can manipulate data and is widely used among the industry.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Product is static and doesn't fit well with the new style of dynamic project management.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

I prefer dynamic products such as Wrike or Tableau for project management. This product is really only beneficial if you have someone that prefers a traditional project schedule. This product doesn't really handle the other parts of project management. It is not an all-encompassing tool. It is quite limited and static.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This product is beneficial when you need to share and have a program that is widely used.

 ### 7. I do'nt like proprierary software

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 03, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I have to use this because of my employeer.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It is proprietary and you have no really open Sorce possibilities to change to.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I only become my project plans via MS Project.

 ### 8. Disigned for another time in management concept

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jose M. | Management Consultant, Management Consulting, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 10, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It is reliable for the concept of project

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It is so focused in activities. Nowadays management is focused on achievements

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

I would love for the product to change the direction years ago. But the product insists in focus on activities. Many agile softwares already achieved more focus on achievements and measure success and benefit more than resources and time or activities

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Today none really

 ### 9. Large Learning Curve

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I like it's similarity and compatible with the other Microsoft products. It allows you to feel comfortable with the interface as it's already something you recognize.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

To use it fully with most of it's functions requires a huge learning curve in comparison with the other Microsoft products. It may look similar but a lot of the time you might edit something and accidentally ruin your project file by doing so.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

I would recommend taking a look at other products, such as the Service Desk Projects instead. As it is a lot easier to use.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We initially used it for project management and projection of times when our engineers owuld be complete.

 ### 10. Clunky, awkward, first-gen monster with no support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Restaurants | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I like that my team members can access their tasks via an online portal, however the interface is difficult to use.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

So much. The interface is difficult, non-intuitive. We have so many difficulties with the many steps required to check of tasks, change dates, etc. that they end up coming to me for printed task lists instead of using project online. Also, on the desktop version, there are lots of glitchy issues that dont have any support. Even our IT guy doesn't understand this software. We had to hire expensive consultants to help us resolve some issues, and in the end its still an ugly, outdated piece of software.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

project timelines are more easily generated, but I have to go through them with a fine tooth comb or inadvertently something is assigned the wrong time.

 ### 11. Very complete, but also complex to use

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The different views, ability to check project status through earned-value etc. views.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

High complexity and not very user friendly.
You have to really know how it behaves and works, and in big projects (lots of resources, tasks) it is common to get stuff mixed up.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Keep backups when you are interacting. Sometimes you do stuff with impact, don't notice the impact, have to go back to a previous version...

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

WBS definition and management, resource allocation, task and project status

 ### 12. Ok

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Defense & Space | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 10, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Has many functions where you can do many tasks if you understand how.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Not intuitive and difficult to master. Probably ok for software savvy folks

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Probably ok for the software savvy

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basic program management

 ### 13. Project Manager

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Linking the tasks together and allocating resources, also since this is widely used and accepted it is sometimes the most preferred method to create a detailed timeline for a project/work effort

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The charts are not very visually appealing

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

This is not the best for project management though widely accepted

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Convenient to edit project timeline a number of times for fluid projects

 ### 14. Project Manager

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Law Practice | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 02, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

There is plenty of training opportunities available to increase skills in MS Project

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Too cumbersome to set up detailed dependencies

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Can be useful for leadership who appreciate visual Gantt charts. Helpful to show during Project kickoffs

 ### 15. The old guard: OK for project planning but horrible for project execution

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Was the reference standard back in the day when "PMI-certified project manager would puff up their chest, bragging how deep a project plan they could create" was cool.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Cludgey to put together a working solution. Overkill for 95% of projects you actually want to deliver. Not deep enough for construction and engineering projects. You need 100 different MS tool to get it off the ground (yes, I know they're all "free" with MSDN but at what true cost?)

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Check the cloud project tools and understand what you really need. E.g. If you're trying to manager service delivery projects, you need a professional services automation solution, not a raw project management or project portfolio management or Excel.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Tried to deploy it but failed epically when project managers revolted at the "babysitting" required of their project plan and we saw very little delivery.

 ### 16. Organized

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Pharmaceuticals | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2018

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Manage schedules, organize time, make reminders

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Too many tools can seem confusing to people.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Yes

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time management

 ### 17. Project Review

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Corey B. | Product Development Project Manager/ Scrum Master, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 03, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Great tool for defining waterfall projects

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Very difficult to get set up for someone of a lower skill caliber

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Can define a schedule and tasks in a top down order

 ### 18. Merely adequate.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Legal Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 24, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Integration with O365 is convenient. Relatively easy to use GUI.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Software can be a bit buggy and slow at times.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Benefits include seeing the big picture, time mgmt.

 ### 19. 2013 better version including updates than this one 2016 x64 pro version.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 29, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It has an easy learning curve for new hires to learn the program. You get the support that you pay for but after many hours you may or may not get the issues resolved.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

This software is not idea for agile development that you have to track on a project. The software has upon occasion delivered scheduling errors or not made the updates from an update occur. The Format Painter randomly breaks. We rolled it back after a few updates but it still then presented other problems-but project pro 2016 x64
I can still move columns, but I cant actually select where they need to go.
They appear somewhere way down on the ghant chart. It’s like there is a scaling issue with the mouse coordinates or something.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

This product has only had minor tweeks to it and the Pro x64 version including support is expensive. Asana make a better project management software than Microsoft Project and we use that now instead as of next week after the full training is complete.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for group projects and also for any parts of an individuals assignment pertaining to the project as a whole.

 ### 20. Disappointed

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Individual & Family Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Point forward was not at all what I expected and I won’t be recommending it.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Everything about it was not at all what I expected.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Nothing at all.

 ### 21. Great for first timers

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Real Estate | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I think the layout and accessibility for the program is great, and it is easy to use for newbies.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

While it is great for beginners, the scope of the program doesn't always fit the needs for larger projects.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's great for small project management and presentation, but beyond that lacks in development.

 ### 22. Does not integrate well with other Microsoft Products

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Hardware | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The GANT chart and other capabilities that will allow you to produce very beautiful diagrams. You can micro-manage different tasks and produce a variety of visuals for your team. It seems to allow you to visualize complexity pretty well. For example, you can set parallel paths on certain tasks and determine the time bounds.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It has pretty limited flexibility and capability- especially for someone who is not in technical program management. If you are not a software developer or a construction project manager, this software has very limited tools for you to adapt to your needs. For example, I needed something that will display certain tasks to certain teams and to provide a very high level report on key milestones. This software is very clunky for it.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm usually trying to manage a large project with this software. The benefits is that it allows you to create a GANT chart. However, I stopped using it because it doesn't allow me do high level presentations or inform other members of my team.

 ### 23. Not worth the price

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 13, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Being a PM, i have to use these software programs a fair deal. However, I do rely on Excel more. It lets you do more and I like to view in Excel rather than Microsoft Project. Data is more easily manipulated using excel. MP is fancier looking but that is about all it offers.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Its more complicated. It is not as user friendly as Microsoft excel

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

I think you should give people the option to have various "views" of the program so they can alter how they want to use MP

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Project Management. No real benefits for me

 ### 24. Missing Mac integration

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Broadcast Media | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

This is a known software that has the basics and more, so it is still the go-to solution for everyone managing a project

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Although this is a stalwart in this type of application, the lack of integration with Apple Macintosh computers has ostracized half my staff. The online and mobile versions are still lagging and I feel this is not a solution that works for groups. You'd need a dedicated user keeping updates on his/her own, printing to PDF and sharing via email. Not as modern or practical solution

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I need to manage a project and keep everyone informed of changes and progress. The team is large and spread across the globe, so I need a quick solution that is online. The cooperation side of this project management tool is not there, so I have been using basecamp for that

 ### 25. Using MS Project in Higher Ed

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Allows the user(s) to trace detailed information and track project progress effectively. Provides a snapshot and critical items as well as responsibilities and and tasks to be tracked effectively.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Difficult to get people to use because it appears bulky and hard to maintain for the novice project manager. It is not part of our enterprise level MS Office Suite so we have to ask to have it loaded therefore staff is typically wanting to use it.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Medium to large sized projects. Mostly involve multiple departments or stakeholders. Most of the of my collaborators are engineers and researchers, but they are not great in terms of a project management process and documentation. We have used other project management software that was more accepted by the users.

 ### 26. Does minimum to do the job

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David W. | Data Analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Many functions will be familiar to regular MS Office users

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Difficult to locate functions Expensive to license.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

be prepared to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to use this software. would definitely consider other options if anything better were available.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Needed a tool to list and schedule project tasks. Very basic and somewhat difficult to use, but better than nothing.

 ### 27. Fully featured, but alternatives are more cost effective

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Travis O J. | Co-founder and CEO, Consumer Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Being actual software is nice because you can still use the software offline. Software is fully featured, and powerful.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Collaboration while it's gotten better is still lacking in comparison to the competition. Managing the software is time consuming in comparison to completely online offerings.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

There are other tools that are more cost effective and easier to deploy.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gnatt charts are where this program has it's biggest return. Being able to spit out charts, and have the entire team accountable for their tasks is great.

 ### 28. Not the most efficient

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Semiconductors | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The alignment with Microsoft excel products

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

not efficient in data inputting
Hard to navigate around the application
Too complex for a basic user

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Not the most efficient. Look elsewhere, or use basic excel.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Project Management - can assist with organization and structure of a project.

 ### 29. Very basic

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Logistics and Supply Chain | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 06, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Ability to see roll up completion percentages, ability to see each step of project and where it fits within the timeline, as well as predecessors affecting different items.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

There are other softwares that have more functionality, giving other users the ability to make changes, and reminding stakeholders of their due dates and action items automatically. It is also finicky when updating items, sometimes line numbers are not sequential or there is a gap for no apparent reason.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping programs on track and having successful and carefully tracked project plans allows for smoother operation of said program down the line.

 ### 30. From the IT side

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam C. | Technical Consultant, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It's integration into the Microsoft office side of things.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The install process. It's a pain and if you already have installed products it can cause you to have uninstall everything to start from scratch.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The work flow for the teams is a great issue solved.

 ### 31. Great for waterfall projects, not agile

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Katherine K. | Senior Technical Project Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 25, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

easy to recalculate timelines quickly or change work schedules for holidays

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

UI isn't great, doesn't work well for agile projects, often gives errors when moving task dates or marking complete for no reason, does not integrate with timesheet/financial software to calculate burn rates.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

consider a better agile/waterfall hybrid project management system.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

project management for schedules

 ### 32. Easy to setup project tasks, keeping all dates correct takes more training

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

 ### 33. Microsoft Project

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sonya G. | IT Supervisor, Business Application Services - Systems Development Team, Public Policy, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It's organization and task assignment to team members.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

It's difficult to use and manage projects with. If you change one thing it's a hassle to fix the project.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Listen to your users and make it easier to use.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Project Management. That we need a custom application in order to meet our needs.

 ### 34. Good, but not great

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Aviation & Aerospace | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Project cheduling capability is very good.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The financial module is completely inadequate.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

MUST develop and integrate a robust financial module to enable portfolio management and better project management.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Doing Project Management; would like to do Portfolio Management

 ### 35. Using Microsoft Project

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cassandra M. | Staff Content Designer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 13, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I think MS Project is great when you have a long group of numbers and cannot take the time to manually add the large numbers.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Unless you have experience, it can be a bit daunting and difficult to master the ins-and-outs immediately.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

This is best used when you have a large amount of numbers you need to calculate.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work with proposals all day so MS Project helps eliminate the potential for human error with the calculations. It's definitely helpful with large groups of numbers, but it's not very user friendly.

 ### 36. Microsoft Project

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 25, 2017

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Good for sequential steps for process. Sometimes the links do not work in the steps and requires you to delete and reenter fields. Can be time consuming.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I think the software is clumsy and lacks flexibility for outlining/linking steps that may happen in tandem.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Resource management. Identifying work streams and patterns.

 ### 37. Microsoft Project is great for keep track of timing, but archaic

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nicole H. | Buyer, Automotive, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

I like the ease of use of putting timing into the sheet with easy to see Gantt timing charts.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Overall, Microsoft Project is an archaic platform. There are more efficient methods of tracking timing out there.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I don't use MP very often anymore. My company developed their own system for timing tracking because MP was very slow and tedious.

 ### 38. MIcrosoft Project is limited

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2016

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Not much. It does not work properly for the size projects we have and duration of the projects

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

limited on the projects we are running. Rarely updates the way it is supposed to .

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we are running research projects that can take many years. Some are 10 years and going. This tool is difficult to utlilize for long projects

 ### 39. Good for Linear Projects

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christian V. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2015

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Project is a comfortable way to show your boss, you are working effectively. It is a good tool to model linear workflows and dependencies. Project could help you about deadlines.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

The tool is not very good integrated and should only used for higher lever or managment level planning of work to be done. You could waste a lot of time, if you do not use it carefully. You should create tasks for a working length of at maximum 1 day. Because of poor integration in many cases other systems are better. If you could, it is better to use an integrated system for project planning, timetracking, issues and tickets.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Use it for small projects only.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Organizing your work and showing you work effective.

 ### 40. Good but being eclipsed by new solutions

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew G. | Director of Customer Experience, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 03, 2015

**What do you like best about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Not too hard to use if you are familiar with Office products. It does what it's supposed to do, hard stop. Nothing awesome, nothing amazing, it just gets the job done if you really need it.

**What do you dislike about Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management?**

Extra cost on top of normal office package, this should be included. As well the UI/UX is dated and more complex than needed. Solutions like basecamp will quickly take Project over, in my opinion. It's too clunky to get teams really on board.

The biggest thing is for small teams <10 people this is super overkill. It was useful at larger companies when I was there (BlackBerry) to organize large teams and keep them on track but no one liked using it, they just tolerated it. Shows deadlines well but these get switched so often that it's almost laughable to use anything in the space. A whiteboard works better.

**Recommendations to others considering Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management:**

Try some web-based apps with mobile support if you really think you need project management software. Evaluate what your employees want and if your team sizes are too big if you really need something like this.

**What problems is Microsoft Project & Portfolio Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I thought we would solve project planning/tracking but really a whiteboard/scrum works better! Agile!!
