What do you like best?

This is the industry standard for project planning software but arguably, market dominance has not encouraged MS to improve Project. However, knowledge of this tool is very useful as it is used across industries and I've been able to enter into a client space and work from their .mpp files and share those that I've created. It's good for getting a general, predictive look at timelines and for mapping contingencies between tasks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

When tracking multiple projects in the same file, it's not likely that the critical path will always accurately be identified, you have you use your own judgement. There are also limitations in using this software to both plan and track project progress. For example, adding progress to a plan (by marking % complete or updating 'Actual Start' or 'Actual Finish') will influence downstream dates even if there are dates that shouldn't be changed like planned meetings or deadlines, these necessitate manual restrictions to be put in place which can also interfere with detecting critical path. What do you like best?

We already have many predefined templates that we can use, reuse, and perfect as needed. It's as easy as picking a Gantt chart and filling in the dates, resources working on the project, and creating or deleting new tasks as needed. I can do this in Project in around 20 minutes for any project and compared to excel that takes at least 3 times as much it's a great time-saver, especially when editing the dates and updating the expectations as the projects mature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It is really expensive. I'm happy using it as my company pays for it but I would never buy it giving there are some good free or cheap alternatives and unless you are a project manager like me there is a chance you don't really need the advanced functions anyway. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you work at a big company this software will be your friend when managing projects but as a startup maybe use something else, this is not cheap at all Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Keeping resource allocation and time tracking of the projects I oversee. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

This is not difficult to utilize, but the resources are in fact limited. I like the conventional 8-hour week and the possibility of assigning resources and functions, although I would choose more integrated features, such as easier cost sharing when viewing responsibilities or maybe easier creation of Pareto charts directly from the program. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The number of tools is very important, although it can be really heavy. It takes a lot of effort and time to learn a product to be used to the full. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

When you're going to use MS Project, I suggest an internship with an experienced Microsoft teacher who will introduce you to the system's outputs and inputs to make sure you know all the resources offered. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Usually, I don't solve almost any work at Project and I don't do portfolio management either, so I have almost no accounting or accounting projects, and the advantage is that I usually save a lot of my time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

You can create a schedule that's as detailed as you want it, or as simple as you want it. Easily customizable. Can use templates, as well. It allows you to make sure that you do not miss any small tasks within even the largest projects. I like that there are so many different options and you can really make the tool your own. It's a great tool! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It is a little complicated to learn. If you make a mistake on certain things, it takes a long time to fix that mistake. A lot of training is necessary to get the hang of the tool. I also don't like that there isn't an option right now for auto save. But, once you get the hang of it it's a great tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you want a tool that can be customized to what you need and will help you successfully manage projects down to the smallest details then Microsoft Project is your tool! I love it -- just be prepared to go through a good amount of training to get comfortable with the tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am managing 3 very large projects within Microsoft Project currently. It has allowed me to track down to the tiniest task level when needed to make sure the smallest tasks don't get forgotten. It helps feed into beautiful milestone charts and I can use the data within the schedule to create reports for upper management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Best thing I see whenever I used it was, its interface is very similar to the excel spreadsheet, and amazing customizable UI. Along with trust of Microsoft & runs on a lighter rigs. Gantt Chart/ Progress graphs or multi handle user at site is very simple as it goes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It does not support the customization of budget flow.. or thresholds, like primavera. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

read the PPM concepts before jumping deeper. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It helps to keep an eye on the project and foresee any labor or material issues and helps in delivering the project on time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

This is very helpful for project management and saves us a lot of time overall. The pre-built templates are very helpful and this system allows us to easily view work projects and monitor the progress we are making. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The biggest dislike is the price and it is not as user friendly as it could be. There are alternatives to this product that are more cost efficient and a bit easier to learn on the front end. I do like using this, but it is hard to justify the cost at times. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would advise to look at all the features offered and the price point to make sure you will use it enough to justify the cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We save a lot of working hours with this tool. I like being able to see each stage as we progress through our work projects and have everything saved in one place for easy access. I can easily track and view everything and save a ton of time doing it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

What I dislike about this application is that it requires an additional license to the Office 365 package. It should be an optional within the same package. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Microsoft Project we were able to organize our projects much better. Observe how resources overlap, analyze progress and critical paths. This helps us to optimize time and resources and to be more effective. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

In one application, Microsoft Project allows you to keep track of resources (e.g., time, labor, etc.) as you complete your project. It does this through GANTT charts and other various means. You can see who is assigned to what tasks, how much time he/she has to complete the tasks, etc. on a single page. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Microsoft Project costs a business to use. There are other applications available in the market which are lower cost or free. Microsoft Project requires some effort to learn - you may wish to use a tutorial. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Consider using a tutorial to learn Microsoft Project. I attended a class on Microsoft Project. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The problem that I am solving with Microsoft Project is management of my projects. On a single page, I can see who needs to do what, in what amount of time allocated so that the project can be successfully completed. Microsoft Project is extremely versatile as I can change its parameters when the project changes, e.g., if I add on more labor or the project runs out of time. In addition, Microsoft Project will allow me to run "what-if" scenarios on the project. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

I really like that this product is so innovative. You can collaborate on projects you are doing with people from all over the world. It is very easy to share files, update tasks, schedule meetings and even have online chats with your team. You can customize the tools that you use to best suit your needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It is pretty costly and not very simple to navigate at first. Fortunately, my company paid for the service. If I worked for myself, I would probably choose one of the comparable alternatives that are less expensive or even free. The advanced functions are a plus but not really needed by your average user. Also, unlike some other programs, it does not auto save. I had to get used to remembering to save things when I was done making any changes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have been able to track and manage my time and the time of others under me. You can track everything all the way down to the most minute task to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. The charts you can create are extremely helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

The automated formulas/columns which reflect % Complete, Work Breakdown Structure numbering/ordering, and Task dependencies/predecessors. These automated features speed up the development of a project schedule within Microsoft Project. I work in commercial, so the ability to export to PDF or Excel formats is a must, as a lot of my clients do not have the ability to view .MPP file formats. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The inability to save column widths, cell formatting, and printing or PDF options is limited. I constantly find myself having to update/adjust the column widths to be able to fit the project schedule on a paper or PDF layout. The ability to open multiple .MPP in separate windows is a BIG detractor, as there are plenty of moments where I need to compare a template or old project schedule to help me develop a new project schedule (for a totally different client). Navigating thru the menus and the export features could use some improvement. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With the Microsoft Project solution, I am developing customer onboarding and deployment project schedules. This allows us to collaborate with our clients and effectively show all project tasks and deliverables. It also allows the clients to see all dependencies which may impact their onboarding or deployment timeline. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Some tools are often difficult to configure if you do not have the appropriate experience or knowledge, and when dealing with large amounts of details it can take a little time to process reports and analysis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
