I like creating a federated data model as centralized, which helps to build shared reports on top of that, and RLS is helpful for working on finance and sales data using a centralized dataset and report. I also appreciate the Apps feature, which gives me freedom as a developer to satisfy client requirements. The paginated reports are useful for sending Excel outputs to specific user groups for their business needs. The federated data model minimizes the rework involved in data model development and reduces the number of standalone reports, allowing me to focus on report development instead of creating data models for each individual report. DAX! - i am well familiared with excel, when i initially came into using PowerBI.. DAX looked like just excel formulas but as i worked further i could see the underlying architecture is completely a different animal....

There's a big learning curve if you aren't formally trained and a significant technical gap in access and knowledge between business customer (e.g. a business unit or department) and developers. This sometimes makes it frustrating to resolve issues because they're on the configuration side which business users don't have direct access to. This isn't an issue if developers and data services teams are immediately and easily available (in-house) but can be very challenging if you have to go through some hoops for this kind of support. I don't think there is a specific limitation for Microsoft Power BI. Just it is a bit more like, if it also offers the report making through MCP server, not just the data modification. Sometimes due to the very high volume of semantic model, the report takes too much time to load. I literally feel a few latency in the direct query compared to the impact query or, like, in the impact mode as compared to query. So that is something that needs to be improved. We recently used Power BI for a massive client implementation, handling the entire reporting track for their SAP S/4HANA migration project. Honestly, the visualization capabilities and the deep drill-down features were a complete game-changer for the client's executive team.

The real power came from DAX. Being able to write customized calculations that mapped exactly to the client's specific financial requirements—and connecting those directly to the S/4HANA backend—allowed us to deliver clean, advanced dashboards straight to the CXOs. It performs amazingly well when fetching huge data volumes and structuring them into clean layouts without lagging. Plus, the licensing cost is highly reasonable for the actual value it brings to an enterprise setup. The widespread availability of Power BI certifications also made it incredibly easy to onboard the client’s internal team and build quick tool awareness before the official Go-Live. Honestly, the biggest pain point during our S/4HANA rollout was the performance lag. When you are dealing with massive SAP data models, the tool becomes incredibly resource-intensive, and if your DAX isn't 100% perfect, everything just slows down to a crawl.

Also, the learning curve for the client’s internal team was much steeper than expected. Writing complex DAX isn't intuitive, so we had to spend way too much time hand-holding them through basic report maintenance. Plus, the lack of a native Mac app is super annoying—half the CXOs we built dashboards for are on MacBooks, making the desktop development side a total headache for them.
