Some upside I like about active Directory is it's an all-in-one. For example, you can put people into groups and then put groups into larger groups. For example, let's say a new accounting person just joined the company. You can add them to the accounting group, and then the accounting group to the accounting software group. This way, if this person leaves the company, you can simply remove them from the accounting group, and access is cut off.
