Diagrams are defined as text in Mermaid syntax, and the rendering engine determines the layout. When a process changes, updating the diagram is a text edit rather than a rebuild — the practical difference from drag-and-drop editors, where repositioning nodes is part of every revision. There are several ways to create a diagram: users can write Mermaid syntax directly, begin from a template, or describe a process in plain language and let Mermaid AI generate the diagram along with its supporting documentation. Every route produces the same text-based diagram, so one that began as an AI generation or a template is edited, versioned, and updated exactly like one written by hand. The editor supports the full range of Mermaid diagram types, including flowcharts, sequence diagrams, class diagrams, entity relationship diagrams, state diagrams, Gantt charts, user journey maps, mindmaps, and timelines. Teams use it for software architecture diagrams, database schemas, API request flows, onboarding and process documentation, and project timelines, where the same syntax covers both quick sketches and diagrams that need to stay accurate over time.
