## About Mergin Maps
Mergin Maps is a field data collection tool built on the free and open-source QGIS which allows you to collect, store and synchronise your data with your team. It removes the pain of writing down paper notes, georeferencing photos and transcribing GPS coordinates. With Mergin Maps, you can get your QGIS projects into the mobile app, collect data and synchronise it back on the server. Setting up your project with Mergin Maps only takes a few minutes. First, create your survey project in QGIS, then connect it to Mergin Maps with a plugin and synchronise it with the mobile app to start collecting in the field. The data you capture in the field survey is shown on a map and can be exported to a wide variety of formats including CSV, Microsoft Excel, ESRI Shapefile, Mapinfo, GeoPackage, PostGIS, AutoCAD DXF, and KML. Mergin Maps allows you to do live position tracking, fill out survey forms and capture and edit points, lines or polygons. You can also connect external GPS/GNSS devices via Bluetooth for high-precision surveying. Map layers look the same as in QGIS desktop so you can set your layer symbology how you want it on the desktop and it will appear that way on your mobile device. Mergin Maps supports offline field data capture for situations where a data connection is unavailable. It can be configured to use either offline or web-based background maps and contextual layers. Perks of the Mergin Maps sync system: - No need for cables to get your data on/off your device - Share projects with others for collaborative working, even offline - Updates from different surveyors are intelligently merged - Push data back from the field in real time - Version history and cloud-based backup - Fine-grained access control - Record metadata such as EXIF, GPS and external GNSS device information - Sync with your PostGIS datasets and external media storage such as S3 and MinIO Supported field types for forms are: - Text (single or multi-line) - Numeric (plain, with +/- buttons or with slider) - Date / time (with calendar picker) - Photo - Checkbox (yes/no values) - Drop-down with predefined values - Drop-down with values from another table

## Mergin Maps Reviews
  ### 1. Open source, useful, and user-friendly

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ethan H. | Environmental Scientist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2025

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

Mergin Maps has vastly improved field data collection process and standards for me and my team. It seamlessly integrates with QGIS and allows users to create offline-compatible, customizable data entry forms that can be adapted to a variety of projects and purposes. It simplifies the mobile to desktop interface with a level of support that we couldn't get from ESRI.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

There are a few UI/UX aspects that could use slight tweaks. Compatibility with some additional GNSS receivers would be helpful. I would like to see a greater focus on forms to better compete with ArcGIS Survey123.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's solving the need for centralized mobile data collection standards. It enables my work to be more efficient, secure, and enjoyable.

  ### 2. A stable and easy way to get valuable information for our business

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Food Production | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 15, 2025

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

The surveys are easy to setup and quickly start getting information.
Its app is very stable for working in offline jobs.
Nice design.
The syncronization works very well with all the users, its easy to get the information for then being analyzed.
The beta map for easy data visualization.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

I would like to have the alternative of showing some graphs in the surveys.
Also it would be good to have the chance to make a more responsive/interactive data entry
To have better administration of users permisions in a project that they are contributing, the only way to manage that is to creat isolated projects or with themes, that any way al users can see the info.
Price could get better.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Truffle harvest and field activities are easly registrated, saving time and also generating valuable data for decision making.

  ### 3. Great Value and Features, but Training Needed Due to Limited Industry Adoption

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 16, 2025

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

Reasonable licensing model and pricing, project version control and conflict management, ecosystem that is constantly evolving.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

Less popular in our industry so staff are unlikely to already know the tool, requiring additional training. ArcGIS is more common in our industry and we still need to rely on interoperability.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mobile data collection

  ### 4. Simple, Easy, User-friendly, and helpful community

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mohaned H. | Software / Web developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

It's simple to use and the community is very supportive

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

nothing to be mentioned, it has fulfill all the requirements we asked for

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

collecting geospatial data in offline mode while considering teams in merging data

  ### 5. Intuitive GIS platform for new students

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 03, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

This software is an inuitive option to gather GIS data with students new to GIS. They offer free educational accounts , and we are able to collaborate on assignments fairly easily. The app works great with QGIS.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

While the program offers different roles (Editor, Reader, Owner), there is no role for a Contributor: someone who can add their own data and download the project, but is unable to remove data from others or change symbology. Additionally, the app is very easy to collect photos with, but the space they give to educational accounts can only hold about 20 photos. I would like an option to archive these, or compress them, to add to the project later.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When I teach GIS, I want my students to be able to easily gather data according to government standards here in Norway. Mergin Maps allows me to easily upload code values and standard fields into the app so that the students can easily record new data for projects we work on together in class.

  ### 6. Good platform for field data collection

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Peter J. | Heritage Development Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

Functionality on a wide range of mobile platforms, enabling users to collect data in the field with minimal setup and hassle.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

It is industry-level software, so some features are not designed with lay-users (e.g. volunteers on a project) in mind.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are collecting snapshot survey data on the condition of listed historic buildings (heritage assets). Mergin Maps has enabled us to setup a project for volunteers to use and contribute to the data collection.

  ### 7. Mergin Maps and waste management

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Renewables & Environment | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

We started with a desktop version of our app based on QGIS and the custom plugin with automated tools for waste sampling planning. Then we used Mergin Maps to capture field data, where we heavily used a potential of mobile app available for iOS and Android, both online and offline, with user-friendly interface. We highly appreciated that for selected groups and users we could simplify our app and deliver the most important data to them.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

Previous version of the app was unstable time to time so hopefully it was fixed with new update.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Offline data collection, customization of the fields, partition the project into multiple teams

  ### 8. Valuable GIS field survey tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam . | Marketing, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

It makes field survey work so much easier and more productive for me and my team. And it's easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

I don't see any problem while using this product.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**
