**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Arup Kumar P. | Software Engineer II, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2022

**What do you like best about MATLAB?**

The inbuilt libraries at Matlab make it very user-friendly and easy to learn. The wide acceptability and massive use of its open-source database enhance the documentation which makes the learning curve enjoyable. While some of the libraries are curated and developed by the Matlab team, people from the developer community outside the Matlab also develop libraries which can be incorporated into the main library very easily and those are moderated by the Matlab team before publishing online. Another important feature of this tool is its reliability. Whenever it is assigned any repetitive task over a large dataset for a large number of iterations, it can run without any supervision and arrive at the results.

**What do you dislike about MATLAB?**

The already published libraries are to some extent a black box with very few parameters to change. If any fine-tuning of the parameters is required to test any machine learning algorithm for a specific dataset, then the user has to rewrite the algorithm from scratch as there is not much option to change the parameters of the built-in algorithm of any library. Furthermore, the software is very heavy to be installed and run on systems with lower specifications. When the software is downloaded with all the optional external libraries, then the machine heats up a lot and other programs struggle to run while this software is being run on a quite large dataset.

**Recommendations to others considering MATLAB:**

The online documentation is very rich for this software. SO using it won't be of any issue. One thing that must be kept in mind is that this software requires some better configurations to run smoothly.

**What problems is MATLAB solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Any new machine learning algorithm can be tested with a huge dataset quickly using this software. Using its huge collection of inbuilt libraries, any dataset can be run through the libraries and the preliminary results give an idea of the type of dataset. After that, the parameters of the algorithm are fine-tuned for obtaining better results.

**What do you like best about MATLAB?**

I have been using MATLAB since college and in my current job for making Simulink models and testing purposes. The coding in MATLAB is almost just like python coding which makes it very easy to use. I have been using MATLAB in my job for testing and development of automotive features and it has made my work much easier by allowing various apps to be installed within the environment for automation purposes and also it had a wide variety of toolboxes that make your work easier.

**What do you dislike about MATLAB?**

The major thing that I dislike is that the MATLAB license is very costly and for students, it is not an affordable option. Also, MATLAB is a very bulky software and occupies a huge portion of my RAM which can cause a problem. Your system should have at least 8-16GB RAM for the software to function smoothly. Other than that, no major issues.

**Recommendations to others considering MATLAB:**

If you are a student, use a free version that is usually available when you enroll for some MATLAB-related courses from online MOOC providers. But if you want to use MATLAB for professional use, then you must buy a MATLAB license. MATLAB license is very costly that's why I recommend students to not go for purchasing the license, for students the amount is comparatively less than that for a standard use license, still might not be affordable for everyone.
