**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I would have to say the thing I like most about Magento Open is the apparent universal comparability with other business administration and marketing tools. Integration of these systems is not always easy but as I understand it, always possible.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The complexity of the back end is quite annoying for a retail business with many SKUs - we have over 80 thousand at Schots

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Have adequate tech support resources at your disposal

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The growth of ecommerce within an otherwise all bricksa and mortar company

 ### 7. Hands down best in features and scalability.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aaron H. | Founder & Managing Director, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 18, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

No matter how you look at it Magento is the most feature-rich out of the box and scalable platform there is on the market. You could spend weeks, countless hours, and thousands of dollars playing with the other platforms out there but in the end, they won't hold up to Magento when it's built right.

Almost limitless configurations, open source, tiered pricing groups, product scheduling, product staging & preview, grouped products, bundled products, single page dynamic checkout, full page caching, RMA, shipping, inventory management, and more right out of the box.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It does require a developer even if you're savvy enough to get it up and running on your own and you install and set up all your extensions you're going to run into what we call (conflicts), some people call bugs. That developer is going to come in handy and they're worth the money because they can get things fixed relatively quickly.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

You should choose Magento if you are wanting a platform that can scale as your business grows. When you weigh out the pros, cons, and costs versus the other platforms you're going to come in cheaper using Magento. The majority of the other platforms on the market are SAAS based and thus and feature enhancements, improvements, or integrations are going to be extra and also SAAS. Remember that SAAS is for the life of the store, meaning as long as you host the store on a SAAS based platform such as Shopify, Big Commerce, Mivo, Demandware, etc, the more it's going to cost you in the long run.

Do your homework and I think you'll agree.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Content staging, product scheduling, B2B features, and the ability to run multiple domains/stores from one instance of Magento.

 ### 8. A robust and potentially powerful ecommerce platform with a steep learning curve

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Food & Beverages | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 26, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento Open Source comes fully loaded with all the essentials needed to get an ecommerce operation up and running. It's also pretty much limitlessly customizable.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Learning to develop and customize within the Magento ecosystem is difficult and takes time. All the extra features can slow it down as well.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Be prepared to struggle at first to fully utilize everything that Magento Open Source has to offer.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento Open Source is the core of our operation. It allows us to operate an online version of our popular brick and mortar stores and engage with customers far and wide.

 ### 9. Magento can be powerful, but also very unreliable.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sally B. | Digital Marketing Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

The powerful capabilities that can withstand companies with hundreds of products and variations. Magento is open source which is great for continued work on code for the platform to get better and better.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Magento is kind of like a DIY...you do not have a great "customer service" option if something goes wrong, and if you have a ton of products then something is bound to go wrong. We experience a lot of users that go to checkout and they get the "circle of death" spinning loader that does not allow them to check out. It is an issue that happens now and then but too often than we would like and who knows how much money was lost due to that.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Research your company's or client's goals before deciding which platform to use for eCommerce. There are differences in each platform that will make a huge difference in accomplishing those goals.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have more control with Magento websites. We custom code websites anyway so for our eCommerce clients, this is a great source as far as having more control compared to BigCommerce, Shopify, etc. It's definitely something you want to research thoroughly though because BigCommerce works better for some of our other clients for different purposes.

 ### 10. AMAZING Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I love how user-friendly it is. I had very little training when I started and it was still enough to perfectly navigate the software.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

I have not come across any downsides yet.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're making it easier for our customers to buy stuff.

 ### 11. Database Management

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 27, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It is simple to use and update, with a logical system.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It tends to be a bit glitchy from time to time.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps us track our data and use it like never before.

 ### 12. Fully featured ecommerce that you can support yourself... to a point

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Warren M. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 30, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Powerful, many advanced features and of course open source so no pesky monthly fees. Excellent multilingual and multistore support. A large pool of Magento experts around the world who can help. Some excellent themes available for purchase at a reasonable fee and a wide range of plugins to extent functionality.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Needs to run on a powerful webserver to get the required response times. Every Magento expert I turned to told me I needed hours and hours to do each task I asked. Was very frustrating and in the end I learned to do it myself although there is certainly need for a tech person in the background and available to answer questions and help out where needed. This is not a plug and play system that you can setup and just let run.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Make sure you have someone who can give you support at the terminal level and a fast server, preferably with something like Litespeed caching.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ability to create multiple stores on one back end without having to replicate software and multiply the management tasks. Turned out that I could install and maintain this myself without too much effort so the overall cost to implement was relatively low. I bought a theme and a couple of modules and integrated with facebook pixel tracking, google adwords and yotpo reviews.

 ### 13. Decent but Unwealdy

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shaun S. | Senior Graphic Designer, Marketing & Social Media, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's a great and versatile eCommerce platform, which gives plenty of flexibility and has support for a vast amount of features and products. Being open source, you have carte blanche to change whatever you want and are only limited by your skillset and imagination.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Although it is flexible and customisable, the Magento platform is overly complex and it's greatest strength - the huge support of third-party developers - is also it's greatest weakness. There is no central support and if Magento of any of its TP components break down, you are on your own.
It also becomes way too problematic if you have a large database. In our experience, a large MySQL database gives rise to a myriad of speed and indexing issues.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Have a good team of developers behind you and make sure you log every implementation and change to the original code, because with every update of issue, you will need to unpick and re-implement what you have done before.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

That being said, the ability to have a huge database and host the thing on whatever server you like, has been a boon for us in the past as there are no monthly subscription fees to pay and we have been able to use the site unchanged for the last 5 years.
However, due to switching developers mid-term, we have found that as the original developer did not keep a log of changes/additions, we are unable to update Magento as this will make the bespoke code unusable.

 ### 14. I used Magento Open Source for 3.5 years

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Flexibility. To create your website, Magento is one of the best platform that gives you design flexibility. Also it is a great platform for SEO.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Unless you are a trained programmer, it is hard to customize and make a use. It requires a certain programming skill.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If you are a good programmer or have a good developer, Magento will give you the best flexibility and SEO capability. If not, you should go with Shopify.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

E-commerce site. We worked with a developer to build our site. Before we were using Yahoo! platform and moved to Magento Open Source. For a design wise, the possibility is endless.

 ### 15. Magento Open Source -

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento was always my go to platform for an ecommerce, easy to use and easy to find free apps in the marketplace. An excellent way to start building a new ecommerde business withouth spending too much money

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Magento v2 is now complex to install and maintain, you almost need a technical expert to support you.
Lot of security to maintain, otherwise you will be hacks pretty fast
V2 is extremely slow compare to v1

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Starting a new business with long revenu for ecommerce

 ### 16. Magento commerce platform

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 08, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It is open source and freely available for public use

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It does not have lots of features like in Magento commerce edition.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

 ### 17. Magento open source experince

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abraam F. | Senior Digital Analyst, Pharmaceuticals, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It offers both robustness and flexibility but just have a detailed requirement analysis first in place and with some platform studying. Also, there many ready built plugins available that can be used to fulfill your needs. For example, the marketplace has many plugins including digital marketing such as SEO, online advertising, email marketing and social. Also, you can find accounting and finance related plugins and user experience related tools as dozens of themes. To complete the cycle, you can check payment integration as PayPal.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Apart from both learning experience curve, I believe it is a good tool for e-commerce business. Also, it needs significant performance optimization. Either you pay premium support or be ready to invest a lot of time to do it yourself.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I recommend Magento to users who work on a large-scale project when you consider robustness and tailoring.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Flexibility to have tailored customizations. Either your own customization or with many available plugins, you can tailor according to your needs. I worked with a team and built an e-commerce platform with significant customization in the billing cycles.

 ### 18. Horrible experience

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 11, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Solves all the common retail problems - stores, products with variants, etc

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The whole thing. Try to setup Magento 10 times, you'll get 6 different experiences, with different problems each time. The problem extends all the way even when developing it, some parts of the entities has repository API, some don't - resulting in spaghetti codes all around.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Unless your developers are absolutely sure that they want Magento, don't do it. The whole thing reeks of unsolvable bugs (forcing you to change the core, but then you can't publish the thing if you do it), poor support and just downright poor design decision. Absolutely hate Magento.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

e-commerce solution. The only good thing is I don't have a hard time setting up store, products, promotions, currency and all its relationship.

 ### 19. Best Open Source System

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Furniture | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

In my opinion Magento is the best open source shop-system. It is easy to use, has a lot of extensions and api´s to third party software also the magento community is so large that there is nearly no problem which can´t be solved.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Also it is easy to use, sometimes it´s tricky when you install new extensions and then something doesn´t work and you don´t know why.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

The most important thing is in my opinion that you have either good developers in house or you choose a good agency that has many years of experience in integrating magento.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using Magento as our shop system to sell our products to our customers in whole europe. The best benefit is that the number of extensions and support from community is the best of all open source systems.

Magento is a great product, but in all honesty, one can do all of what Magento does with WordPress and/or Drupal. They each have bigger, more innovative and agressive open source developers producing really cutting-edge plug-ins.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Needed to roll-out a eCommerce/CMS solution for a small start-up business up in Maine. Their level of sophistication was very limited and Magento solved this need.

If you are not technical, regular vulnabilities updates are necessary and require some technical knowledge

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When I started my own online business, magento was the ideal for me in term of setup, themes avaibility, free applications (marketing, payment, shipping)

 ### 25. Fantastic for control freaks and tekkies

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rikin P. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Scalability.
Customisability.
Amount of third party integrations and modules.
Number of themes and templates.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Steep learning curve.
Now owned by eBay - makes me feel insecure as to the future of the open source model and the separation between ebay, paypal and their other interests.
Competition law issues and conflict of interests for ebay to own this sector as well as owning the worlds biggest marketplace - most magento shop owners and site operators are competing with ebay and ebay sellers - this is a serious issue.
We may be controlled by ebay and our successes dictated by their development of magento, which will inevitably be head to head in terms of priorities, when looking at the small traders.
Ebay could wipe out most competition for their marketplace if they later choose to bring magento community / open source model to an end. Thereby forcing online consumers to shop on ebay marketplace, and so ebay will benefit from commissions on sales there.
MARK MY WORDS - this will happen - and this is why they bought magento out.
This is precisely how large American corporations work - and how they succeed at dominating global industry.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Ease of use.
Administration requires complexity and knowledge and tech savvy users.
Not necessary for small shop owners who do not have IT skills or IT admin staff.
Overly complicated in most cases for such users.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Free access for the common man and everyday person ie no barriers to entry - to be able to compete with major companies, utilising highly scalable, well developed e-commerce software at no cost.

 ### 26. Great Option for Mid-Level E-Commerce

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 27, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

The ability to customize the look and feel is unmatched. We can customize virtually anything from product pages to the homepage, to even allowing certain customers to only see certain products.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The biggest downside is that a developer is needed for building the site.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Be prepared to have a developer, either on staff or on a contract.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento Open Source has helped us provide our customers a stable 24/7, 365 ordering system. It can also track inventory, however we have an internal inventory control system that sends Magento our available inventory.

 ### 27. Basic and advanced users can use

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 22, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Has many features, integrations, plugins, customization options but can be complicated to customize. This is to be expected of open source software. It's a reliable platform for those starting out with themes or those with high customization needs.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Not the most easy to use software but there are tons of resources out there for those willing to dig for information. High number of users makes it likely that'll you'll find answers though there may definitely be times when you're completely stuck.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

You can get the Community version of Magento for free. Just download it from the main website and install it on your web server.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Magento is expensive on the tech support side for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s a complex system in the background, and this means it often takes even experienced Magento developers time to learn how to do what you need them to do. If you want to go for the enterprise option, which includes support directly from Magento, you are looking at around $15,000 / year (with the most expensive Premium Enterprise package clocking in at a staggering $50,000 / year.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Currently we offer various products with different variations options

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

l loved to be able to custom make anything, from design, to reports, add ons, etc

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

is not for everybody you need to be a developer to custom made stuff, can get complicated with users who are not familiar with open source software, is not very user friendly, and l hated the fact that you cannot print a packing slip before you ship something.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

you will need to pay to host the server.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

first, it was free, second we were able to run any type of custom made reports and we could also sell the custom made integrations we developed.

 ### 32. Robust but complex

**Reviewed Date:** October 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

We like the versatility and open source nature of this product and have customized it with tools critical to the unique nature of our business. I like the versatility of the tax rules I can apply, as well as the detailed and customized way I can manage listing complex as well as simple products. I LOVE how Google responds to the format of this platform. I like the options around payment methods as well as shipping methods, which are critical to the way we do business. I also like the coupons and tools we can add to this platform to make the marketing fit our needs.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The security of a PHP site is not for the light of heart, and the vulnerabilities are many. I wish we had known more about this software sooner, and we would have built the site differently - using more attributes instead of custom code, Some of the modules we can buy are not wonderful, so I wish Magento did more to grade the quality of the modules out there. I don't expect you to exactly be Apple, but absolutely no grading or quality credentialing is a rocky road. I don't like HOW MANY FOLDERS THERE ARE. That's a runaway train and makes it hard on everyone.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

big budget for development

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We run a rental service that ships, so customization is key. We have been able to make this work for our unique business needs with Magento, and find that the detailed tools are valuable to our rental business.

 ### 33. Easy to use e-commerce platform

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 29, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like Magento because of its simplicity. e-commerce is one of the growing business and providing an open source software for such businesses, in itself is wonderful. Since Magento is open source (though it has paid version as well), it can easily be customized as per the needs. I think Magento is one of the fastest growing platforms in the e-commerce industry.

Magento has three different versions: Magento Go, Magento opensource and Magento Enterprise. One of the best features of Magento which makes it different from its competitors is its multistore functionality. So basically, if you sell two completely different variety of products, you can do it very easily with Magento. Everything from the backend to inventory management, logistics everything is under one roof.

Magento is also very good for search engine and very robust. You can customize it in a very customizable way.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Though Magento is a very powerful platform and comes with an opensource version also, it also has few issues as well and one of them is to set up Magento on a new server. It's quite tedious to set up Magento. I have faced some issues while setting it up but those were due to some additional entries in my host file. However, I think Magento should be able to solve these issues on its own.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I would certainly recommend Magento to everyone.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using to do our day to day business.

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento biggest benefit is, it's an free open source and has a lot's of online communities and forums to help with lots of examples. Magento has lots of magento connects, themes and it's so vastly used platform that you'll get lots of developers for your customization needs.

Magento is best platform for small and mid sized e-commerce stores with lots of inbuilt features like detail reporting, product customization, checkout process, cart, coupons, gift cards, return & exchange etc.

It's the best platform for your ecommerce store.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

If you're lacking technical skills, it's not good for you. You need somewhat technical skills to manage it or you need a technical person or team with PHP/MySQL expertise. Also you need a good server to run magento store, you cannot run it on shared server.

You will have to be very careful when an new version is released of a plugin. Sometimes the 3rd party plugins create problems because of version conflict.

If you have technical person in your team or if you've expertise in PHP/MySQL then this is the best platform for e-commerce store.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

First read, understand and test it completely before going live. It takes time to learn but the end result is very satisfying if you have learn it.

Just make sure you have some technical person in your team with good server to sustain.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're an e-commerce agency, we develop e-commerce store for our clients. We're using this platform and our customers are very satisfied with this platform. Best part is, it is highly customizable and has lots of 3rd party plugins and themes are available online.

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

With over 250,000 merchants on board, Magento is one of the eCommerce industry’s most popular self-hosted platforms, and it isn’t hard to see why. Magento’s expansive feature set and complete customizability make it an excellent platform for merchants who have the resources to best implement advanced technology

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

There is a paid tier available for enterprise users, but at a basic level the software is free for you to use. Magento is used by massive retailers like Samsung and Nespresso, as well as countless small e-commerce operators, so it’s a serious contender for any business looking to make the move into online retail

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Currently, Magento comes in two versions: Magento Open Source (formerly Magento Community Edition), Magento Commerce (which is intended for enterprise level businesses with developers on hand). Not sure which to use

Magneto community edition is the best platform for small and mid sized segments, it has everything you need. It's a great platform which contain everything Customer management, customizable products, downloadable products, multi lang. support, multi store support, coupons, customizable checkout options etc.

Magento has thousands of Magneto connects, themes. It's very easy to customize it as per your needs with the helps of these plugins and themes.

It's highly customizable open source and best for e-commerce platform.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It is not the user friendly tool, if you lack technical skills. It's better if you have some Php/MySql expert in your team for customization. Sometimes the platform leaves you vulnerable to plugins incompatibilities when an new version is released. You also need at least VPS hosting, you can't survive on shared hosting for magento.

However, with proper knowledge of magneto if a very powerful open source for e-commerce store.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

It's not recommended for very small stores who has less then 100 products, if you're mid sized store, go for it. It will cater every need of yours, but make sure to have a technical person in your team and a good server.

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Fully customizable
Can run multiple stores within it

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Costly to maintain for a smaller company

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If you're a smaller company with not a lot of resources to use toward development and IT support then there may be better solutions. However, it is a great solution to set yourself up for scaling the business. Just keep in mind that you are not an IT professional who can manage the admin of Magento yourself it will be expensive. Have had to get help form IT with product upload problems, plug-in installation and trouble shooting, etc. It's typically not a once click setup when new features are added and the new plug-ins can effect other systems so you really need someone who keeps an overview perspective when adding and maintaining the site.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Over 100 variants of products not a problem in Magento. This is a Shopify limitation requiring work arounds and/or making it not an option.
Customized drop ship programming an option because open source
Various plug-ins for admin and customer experience. A good amount of options available for whatever our needs are.

**Reviewed Date:** December 08, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's open source, so anything can be modified.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Open source means that documentation can be sparse at times, so you need to be technically competent enough to read the existing source to make some changes.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Overall it's a lot cheaper than other platforms, at the expense of increased development time

 ### 42. Magento CE 1.9

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento's biggest pro is it is open source, has a large help community and lots of examples available. It's open source architecture allows for a great deal of customization as needed.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The same open source nature of Magento also means there can be a lot of code conflicts from poor implementations of code, particularly as the number of third party modules used on a store increases, and lots of old examples from outdated documentation. However, with proper attention to detail Magento is a very powerful platform for an eCommerce site. I have not tested Magento 2 extensively to know if some of these issues are better in the new version.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Providing eCommerce sales and support for our customers.

 ### 45. Extremely Powerful Ecommerce Solution

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Clinton S. | Application Support Engineer, Industrial Automation, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento is delivered as a fully functional webcart from the time you install it on your webhost. We were able to launch our first Magento store with very little engineering time, and the multitude of themes, extensions, and modules make it an extremely robust ecommerce solution. As an open source solution, you have full access to the codebase which is great for customizing the functionality of your site.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Unfortunately, the extensible nature of the platform leaves you vulnerable to module/extension incompatibilities and version lock when an new Magento version is released. You definitely want to have a Magento developer handy or be comfortable working with PHP and mySQL yourself to have long-term success with this platform.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We adopted Magento CE to build our ecommerce offering. As a distributor for various hardware manufacturers, our Magento-based store has definitely helped us extend our reach and gain many new customers.

Magento has everything baked into it: product management, customer administration, order management. We've been able to further extend the system with a third-party ERP solution to reduce the amount of time it takes to process orders. Due to our Magento solution, we can process payment and ship an in-stock order in about 10 minutes. Compared to traditional B2B/offline order processing, that alone is huge.
