**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alan N. | User Experience / Product Designer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 15, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

The whole features and tools to manage e-commerce. The way we can create product categories and subcategories or product cross-category, the SKU ID numbers for the products, the complete infrastructure to manage really big online stores, the lateral bars to make surveys or inviting the users to subscribe for the newsletter, the data you are recollecting from the new customers or from the whole payments or transactions.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

You need a super huge hosting service to avoid getting a slow website, you need the basics of frontend if you want to modify something of the User Interface or even move or align something else on the pages. It's so difficult iterate the user experience because there aren't an easy to use builders or front ends editor like drag and drop tools, the time to learn to configure the payment mode.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If the online store has a lot of products, or if you need a huge customer database, send newsletters or constantly promos, coupon codes, and statistics to measure the data and implementing it through frequent iterations.

Floristry online store for my wife

  ### 5. Bundle of Features in one Framework

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shahed N. | Freelance Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 13, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like that out of the box, Magento comes with so many features that other eCommerce platforms don't have or require you to buy additional plugins/modules to get. Magento helped us provide a set of features to clients that would've taken us a long time to implement or integrate with other eCommerce platforms

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The admin panel can be very confusing to understand as it has so many details and functionalities in them. I know that having a lot of functionalities is a good thing, but when the client is not very tech-savvy, they find it a struggle. Also, as a developer, developing in Magento can be very slow as it requires a lot of compile work even for the little changes.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Only use Magento when you need a lot of features or when you have a good tech or programming languages knowledge. If you don't, it can be overwhelming and hard to learn.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With Magento, we are providing our clients with so many features while saving time on implementing a lot of them. Magento is a complex framework but one that delivers great security and reliable functionalities.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Stuart R. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento can be adapted to your specific needs due the limitless extensions and integrations available in the Magneto Marketplace. There is a solution for just about everything. Other eCommerce sites are easier to implement and upgrade, however for a business with multiple stores and languages Magento can accommodate most requirements.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It is a lot more complex to develop than other eCommerce sites, however this is an expected trade-off for the standard features and security. Also, the cost of using multiple extensions can add up quickly. Most extensions are not support in major upgrades and have to be repurchased. Page load speed can be an issue if you have not configured your site and server correctly.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Ensure you have basic development skills if you are installing this yourself, otherwise use a competent developer.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento ticks every box for our eCommerce requirements from order to payments to shipping and stock control. We also use the API to sync with other accounting and CRM platforms.

  ### 9. A Unique and Exceptional E-Commerce Platform

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Trevor D. | Software Development Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento is an expert in delivering and providing features that are a basic need of merchants now a day for starting their exceptional and creative online stores. It is satisfying and facilitating shop owners by providing multiple useful sets of features which includes security features for protecting important data of their stores which includes customer’s information and their credit cards information. It helps in accelerating purchasing and selling activities through its additional enhanced features.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Most of its features and options need a lot of improvements, page building options, options for customizing themes, functions for managing workflows and many more. Sometimes it does not allow editing content or description of products. It should increase the compatibility with various adobe products that are used for marketing therefore productivity and efficiency can be improved through it.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to manage and streamline the overall journey of our customers through it. We are also able to collaborate with various other solutions and products of adobe. It is facilitating us with allowing us to use and access its various advanced features and tools through which we are able to simplify our online business procedure. We are also having an amazing experience of sharing content with it.

  ### 10. A great e-commerce framework to build on that could get more user-friendly

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's quite strong and solid and the database coverage is extensive.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It can be a little bit slow in the process or cumbersome (for mass uploads for example --> it should be naturally easier to manipulate fields and attributes)

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Make sure that for your needs, Magento is necessary. It is a bit heavy, and it really depends on the depth and complexity of your catalog (mostly) ; if it is does not justify it, go for something simpler.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were able to launch the bricks of an e-commerce without investing too much time and money upfront, solving the other problems one by one.

  ### 11. Magento is a Beast - Be Sure It's Right For You!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rodger J. | E-Commerce Analyst, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I love how you can accomplish just about everything you would want for the customer and shopping experience on your site. You will need a Dev, or a few of them to accomplish many things and to continue to manage the sites or sites into the future. Having a multi-store feature is huge to help make Magento more manageable in certain respects though.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The ability to do everything is also the biggest con, mostly because it takes a lot of time to plan, develop, stage and test things before releasing them. When using other e-commerce platforms this is not as much of an issue. Such as Shopify or Big Commerce, most edits to products, pages or the site is fast. Even the system itself is more lightweight and easier to edit.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Make sure your team can handle the management of it and are capable to edit designs.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having to hire someone to manage this platform along can be costly to many small businesses. It has tremendous benefits for complicated products with many variants but comes at an even more complicated way of managing those options. Furthermore, filters and multiple experiences from different paths cant be cumbersome in addition to very inflexible plugins. There is no support since its open-source so everything is up to you to identify and manage most effectively for your needs. It can be exhausting for some who have to focus on other platforms and departments.

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like the new menu bar on the left as it is easier to navigate. We also like the additional customer info we can view from the Order screen.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

We are very disappointed in outside extensions not being compatible. we have struggled to get several companies products to work. We also have been very frustrated that we are unable to key orders on the backend ourselves. We have to enter them on the website rather than in Magento due to some glitch. Hoping this is fixed with 2.4 updates. We also discovered another error between Magento and Authorize.net. Authorize.net is declining the transaction but somehow Magento is still creating an order! yes, we have realized we have shipped thousands of dollars of orders to customers who never paid. the customer does not receive a declined or error message, instead they receive an order confirmation from Magento. Still trying to fix this.

  ### 26. Great platform for ecommerce, but difficult to implement and maintain

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raul F. | Gestión de Proyectos Digitales, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

What I like best is that it has many functionalities. Even the default version. For example, you have multi language stores, multi currency, B2B or B2C options, easy to integrate with many payment options. And a Beautiful design, with many not expensive templates and configurations options.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

What I dislike the most is the many maintenance costs. For example, you can expect to spend around 200 usd per month for a good hosting, plus 2 o 3 daily hours of trouble shouting technical maintenance (for example, pages that give error, need to install an extension, optimize speed, etc). And this just for an small store.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Magento is great. I really like it. And I am thankful that they are giving it for free, while doing such a great work. At the same time, Magento is not for everyone. It is easy to like because has multilanguage stores, multi currency, tons of flexibility. It probably beats Shopify in many aspects. I think that if you are selling more than 20.000 usd per month, it can be a good options. Shopìfy I think is also a good option, specially if your are under that figure.

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

The thing about Magento is that it is easy to use and especially when you want to create an online store. Plug in's are easy to access and not all of them are paid, which means if you have minimum budget you are able to build something is both safe and easily accessible.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The problem is that when you use Opensource there is always the risk of vulnerability. Attacks are most common on Magento because it is seen as holding the financial transaction hence it becomes prone to hackers. However, should you be in a position to secure your site you are sure to enjoy it.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Magento is very flexible and easy to use. If you don't want a complicated CMS i suggest you go with it. Also bear in mind that there is forum support so you don't have to pay for assistance.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One does not have to have paid themes or CMS all the time The problem with using paid CMS systems is that the support is always paid for. Yet with Magento there are lots of forums and support from people using it and those facing similar problems.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Stewart H. | Sales and Operations Director, Professional Training & Coaching, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 26, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Coming to Magento from e-commerce solutions like WooCommerce on Wordpress I was at first taken aback at what seemed like limited admin options, an outdated admin UI, and the need to edit php code to do many things I might have expected to use a GUI for.
But as time has progressed I have come to realise how much power and flexibility is built into the platform, that all the most necessary capabilities are indeed baked into it, and that the theming model is actually very powerful once you understand how it works.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It's unlikely you will be able to do everything you want using the GUI tools in Magento and sooner or later you will find the only way to do something is to edit php code - or pay someone to do that.
Bulk import of products to get started is very fickle in Magento 1 (but seems much better in our Magento 2 test site).

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Check you have the technical skills or resources to use effectively.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

  ### 35. Best Solution for small and big E-Commerce business

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Devang L. | iOS App Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

-I like Magento because it's user interface is very reliable, easy eye-capture features and also unknowledgeable users can use easily.
-Magento has so many functionalities that become smooth life of businessmen.
-Magento has a bunch of features like a catalog where users can easily handle their products and
Sales tab where users can easily know their sales of products like the total number of selling products
and show revenue of the store.
-I also like Marketing features where users can boost their products and sales
-Magento has so many versions, In 2.3 it added page builder for creating a simple attracting website and also added Google Two-Step Verification for security purposes.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

I have no idea about dislike but it is a very costly enterprise version so avoid middle-class businessmen. It has also lack of Technical software support and very hard for theme customization.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 03, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento Open Source is truly customisable and through the local code pool, it facilities changes very well. The strong sense of community, will mean you are not alone and have a big open network of experienced people at hand to help.

The User Interface is equally easy to use. Comes with a variety of templates from blank to responsive. So, don't have to even start from scratch. .

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Although M2 ("Magento 2") has negated this, the M1 ("Magento 1") has incorporated lots of things in an old-fashioned way.

The M1 architecture is not too flexible and easily upgradable. For instance, moving from Magento 2.0 to Magento 2.x versions are much easier than moving from 1.0 to 1.x versions.

In short, Magento 2 will be much better option in terms of upgrading for future use as compared to Magento 1.x.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento is the complete platform solution for us. With a few custom modules magento includes all the functionality for day to day operands.

**Reviewed by:** Akshay R. | Asst Manger Marketing, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Feature-rich – the Community (free) version consists of features which are not easily available in other solutions such as the ability to manage multiple stores, Multi-language and multi-currency support and is mobile and search engine friendly.

User-friendly – the administrator panel has one of the most user-friendly interfaces I’ve ever seen with simple and intuitive navigation and well-organized store management.

Cost – community version is available for free.

Community-wide and active community of users who have developed many extensions and plugins and can provide support.

Flexibility – Magento’s architecture allows you to pretty much customize everything so you have full control over your online store. It’s open-source so you get full control over the code and can develop any functionality you need.

Scalable – as previously mentioned, Magento is built to scale so whether you’re a small size business or a large one, Magento can easily handle it.

High Performance: When it comes to page load speed, query processing time and other such performance parameters, Magento emerges as a winner again

**Reviewed by:** Allen G. | Ecommerce Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 29, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like the security features that Magento offers. It is one of the more secure options out there. The support community is very large so if you need help or have questions, you can usually find an answer quick.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Downside is the command line aspect of Magento. It really is a pain when trying to do something simple that use to be quick.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I recommend watching some reviews on youtube and google searching other options. Weigh out your options and see what platform will work best for your application. There is no cut and dry out of the box application that will work for everyone equally. Go over pro's and con's of all the options available and see what will work for you. Also consider the learning curve for each platform. If you do not know, and or have never used it, remember there will be time you have to spend to learn the platform.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I haven't solved any problems other than being confident that it is a secure platform. Benefits are the vast community and addons you can use.

Flexibility and variety of features and options - available via modules. Scalable in size.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

SEO unfriendly. Software can be touchy depending on the installation. If a module doesn't exist, expect heavy customization to complete. Can be very slow if not optimized properly, but this is true with any program.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Hire a great developer. Most outsource overseas and quality of build suffers as a result. It's not easy software out of the box.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Growing sales. We are able to offer our customers new features, which has allowed us to grow sales and revenue.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian F. | Brand and Technology Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 19, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento Open Source offers extensive configuration options and lots of cart functionality out of the box. Once configured you will find that the default themes and flows are adequate for pushing cart sales and directing your customer through the process to a successful transaction. I have also found that the cart runs very well on hardware spec that are less than recommended and lower cost cloud servers work well.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Theming, or even making small changes to the look and feel of the site require an extensive knowledge of web technologies. While updates and security patches are frequent, I have found that installing the patches to be a hassle with a high failure rate as well.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I have tried several big name products, both hosted and self-hosted, and can say that the value is definitely with Magento. Other products are easier to setup and initial implementation is faster, but benefits and long term use is much better on the Magento platform.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

There is a lot of integrations possible basically every other ecommerce software is able to integrate in Magento.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Due to the software being open source, makes for a really complicated and difficult to use program if each of these integrations were to be enabled and used.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

It’s a good starting software but would recommend a easier to use and more advanced software.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A big part of the ecommerce infrastructure is able to be streamlined if implemented the correct way.

  ### 47. Magento Is Great For Building Highly Customized Online Stores

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** .Kim M. | President, Designz23 Marketing and Development, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento's open source version is free to download install and customize., saving you money especially if you know a bit of html and php. Like all "open source" shopping carts, you own and control the complete code on your own hosting account, and are free to do whatever you'd like with it, change it in any way that you can image. Download other developers' "ad ons", read, learn, and understand many ways to customize your shopping cart website to your own liking.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The support for the open source version is lacking. Although the user base is very large, the quality of the user base comments and replies you get might not be as easy to obtain, understand, or replicate the exact same issue in the same way.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Use a template right from the start for a fast setup and install that already has the design you want.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento transforms my clients' brick and mortar retail stores into ecommerce websites with complete online purchasing and inventory.

  ### 48. Magento 1 was good but Magento 2 is not very good

Customization I need for my product.

  ### 49. Magic Magento

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

As an open source tool, magento has been brilliant for building a dropship e-commerce site, incorporating wordpress.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Not much to dislike really, I think CSV's can be a bit troublesome when listing a lot of products but with Magento 2 due next year, this will be an even better tool, I would reccomend this for anybody building an e-commence website - professional and for large companies to use.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

do it

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Listing large amounts of products to sell & very quickly.

  ### 50. Great e-commerce platform. Easy to use.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento has a list of extensive of core features. Search engine optimization for example. In addition there are many (free) extensions available to integrate into the e-commerce store.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It can be quite difficult to customize the store exactly to meet your needs. The front end is very flexbile, but it is more complex than other e-commerce solutions. Also, it is not the fastest e-commerce platform. It needs a dedicated server to run on.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has made our workflow for handling web shop orders much easier. Magento has powerful built-in features to track orders and customers. It also has marketing/SEO features. We no longer need to use additional tooling to do our financial administration.
