## Magento Open Source Reviews
 ### 1. Flexible Yet Costly and Complicated to Maintain

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tom l. | sales and marketing, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2026

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I used Magento Open Source to host and run my e-commerce store for four years. I found it to be a packaged backend with a very robust feature list and full customization. I liked the price and the fully customizable features that allowed us to make our store look however we wanted. We were able to do things like create a custom loyalty points app and other customizations that you would generally purchase an app for.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The general upkeep of Magento caused us to leave. The issue that I have with Magento is that you need a developer on staff to be able to make changes and fix issues or you need to hire a developer a la carte. Overall, it became more expensive to use. First of all, we needed hosting off-site using a different provider, and a lot of the time you are managing a handshake between two services, and it sometimes does not work. Also, issues would arise like a broken link or banner missing. Because of the heavy code aspect of Magento, these issues were not able to be resolved ourselves. It was nowhere near as easy as Shopify - we required an onboarding team and marketing company to handle the setup.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I found Magento Open Source offered a robust backend for my ecommerce store with full customization, enabling us to make our store look however we wanted. We implemented features like a custom loyalty points app without purchasing additional software.

 ### 2. Pretty good but requires a lot of customization

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Derek H. | Senior IT Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2024

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's totally open, can become whatever you want it to be

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Requires a development team to really get the most out of it.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

E-commerce and marketing needs

 ### 3. Magento2 : To choose or not for your e-commerce.

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aayushi S. | Freelancer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 13, 2025

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento is a great tool to quickly set up your e-commerce online as the base for any e-commerce is already built.

It allows extending the frontend of your website according to your design needs with ease.

It allows easy integration of must-have e-commerce functionalities like Google reviews, customer rewards, Bulk price request, Affiliate marketing through third-party modules.

Best part is, we can also extend and customize the functionality of these third-party modules according to our requirement.

It gives great user experience for the admin side for your e-commerce.

Overall, it is a good open source tool to develop and maintain e-commerce with minimum developer requirement.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

From the point of view of performance, it is not as good to choose Magento, because many other frameworks are developed which are somewhat more optimised and performance friendly than Magento.

Magento2 is not good to choose, if someone is a fresher in development, as all the basic building code is already there.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Since the platform provides a basic building of any e-commerce in it, we are using and maintaining it with more customisation and integration with lesser development cost .

 ### 4. Great for B2B Inventory, but Not Suited for B2C

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2026

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like how the system is built for b2b managing inventory and the availability of designs format it has

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

I dislike that it doesn’t suit a company focused on B2C.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helps us manage our inventory

 ### 5. Magento Works

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adrianna T. | IT Support Analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2024

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

- Easy to Use and Navigate
- Excellent Reporting Capabilities
- High number of features available within the program
- Works well when there are no issues

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Our CRM and ERP sycronization do not always work with Magento, which has caused on-going issues externally for customers. The instability of the 3 programs working together can cause negative customer experiences.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We did not have a website before getting Magento, and now we do! This has been the biggest benefit of all. Our Sales reps have been freed up to gain new business, as they no longer need to enter their customers orders manually. The customer has this option themselves!

 ### 6. Established platform but not a great interface for marketers

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 21, 2024

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Integrations with our ERP and other services are quite stable

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It can be clunky and also not the straightforward to use as a marketer.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A robust, all round ecommerce solution.

 ### 7. Ownership makes it very hard to love Magento

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gary H. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Was using Magento in 2006 1.xx days and it really, really great. Very robust and dependable... couldn't ask for more, But when eBay bought it and went to the 2.xx foundation it was a complete disaster, nothing was compatible and for me to make the move to 2.xx would have been insanely costly. I ended up switching to WooCommerce and I've been happy, but miss the versatility of Magento. I've used 2.xx in other appications with Adobe at the helm, and it's good, but won't make the leap until i'm forced to.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It can be costly if you need outside plugins, Seems like Magento developers think they're mightier than god and charge like it. If you don't need anything outside of a base install, you'll be ok.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It was a great solution until a forced upgrade made me move to WooCommerce

 ### 8. Good Option With Open Source with Rest & Soap Api Features

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2024

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Order Management
Handling Invoice & Inventory & Billing & Products Mapping On Website, Valid Transactions Easy Platform

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Its loading very slowly and server are too slow

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basically, everything okay but the main issue is the server loading which is very slow also some integration feature with creating user and giving acess to rest files is too tough to understand how it wil work accodigly.

 ### 9. Fairly good CMS, though a little clumsy

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David H. | SEO Analyst, Retail, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 31, 2023

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

WYSIWYG, or direct HTML coding options for creating pages. Order creation, retention, and metrics.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Difficult to traverse through the systems to get to each module. THe naming scheme can make finding things a bit confusing.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Made it very easy to create organic content pages, and manage EComm.

 ### 10. Magento Open Source allows you to build a online store and has the basic ecommerce capabilities

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jamie L. | Marketplace Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 12, 2022

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento Open Source was used when the company was first founded. It had the ecommerce solutions we needed. From shopping carts, to website management, it was really easy to navigate and maintain.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Magento Open Source requires you to have the knowledge to upgrade and update your website. Developer knowledge is key and not all companies have that ability. We must outsource in order to update and grow the existing websites. Meanwhile, other Ecommerce platforms can easily help us transition.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Great tool for Ecommerce Websites. Its strength lies in SEO if you can fully optimize your website.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mangeto Open Source hosts our first website and it still functions in this day an age even though the website itself looks and feels outdated. It still works and solves the problem of basic Ecommerce store.

 ### 11. More secure but less intuitive and user friendly

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abhishek D. | Digital Marketing Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 01, 2022

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

You can add tons of products and it will still run seamlessly. Magento is also very SEO centric. Its page builder WYSIWYG has some neat features. Magento also has some advanced reporting options available and these keep updating constantly to show the latest metrics.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Technical support could be better. You will need a dedicated hosting server for swift operation. Shared hosting does not work quite as well. Magento is a little too complex compared to its alternative. There are a lot of premium features available but are not all free to use.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If you are a technically advanced person with good knowledge of WordPress, hosting, and website setup in general, then go for Magento. It also has paid features you can use. It is more secure than WooCommerce in my opinion.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Magento has helped a lot of people including my company to set up an online store and start a business. Our first e-commerce platform was Magento until we made the switch to WooCommerce because of its ease of use.

 ### 14. A tool that could give more but that does not stay that far

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bautista R. | Intern, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2021

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Its ease of use for first-time users is very useful and especially for those companies that are just starting out, which saves a lot of valuable time at that time.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

What I do not like so much is that it is not designed or does not work to help those companies that are growing and are not smaller. On the other hand, it is difficult for the company to understand the style to be used and how to guide itself within it.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

My recommendation is that you thoroughly analyze your own company and only when you are very sure that it is the right software for you or if you should opt for another software

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As I mentioned previously, it is ideal for those companies or ventures that are starting and are just beginning since, due to cost, quality and performance, it is ideal and can generate real help.

 ### 15. Magento for beginners

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2022

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Powerful and stable if you have the right developer to use it

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

You need a developer or expert to use it. Expensive.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I don't think Magento is a good fit for small operations that can't keep a developer on the payroll.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed to build a website with a storefront and our development chose Magento. Magento was able to handle every need but they sunsetted our 1.0 version which meant we had to either upgrade or move.

 ### 16. Nice, but tricky

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chantel P. | Design Consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 24, 2021

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

We switched to Magento when updating our website, and it has worked (mostly) well in helping us bring in more traffic and customers.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Sometimes performing specific tasks is unusually difficult or impossible to do on the platform.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

I would recommend evaluating a few different options and possibly checking out message boards of current users to gauge their satisfaction with the product.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We wanted to use Magento to improve our website's appeal and function. It has been good, especially as we've learned the tricks and tips to succeed with it.

 ### 17. Great to build powerful E-commerces. Too complex if you are looking for something that just works

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Juan M. | G, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 02, 2021

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

The amount of customization possible with Magento is off-the-charts
As an open-source software, it provides a lot of flexibility to build powerful e-commerce sites. Complete e-commerce features can be customized and built from scratch.
Within the Magento community there are bast resources to get material to help you build.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Given the complexity of its features, it gets challenging to implement and maintain. Updating pricing lists and products master lists required long amount of time. It's easy to get lost inside its bast features. Magento's configuration panel is not intuitive at all.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Consider working with an experienced Magento partner to administrate and maintain it updated.
If you are looking for an E-commerce engine with standard features, consider a more accessible tool like Shopify.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We set up multi-currency multi-language e-commerce. The project was thorny and required sophisticated features, like dynamic pricing and dynamic shipping costs. Magento was able to provide extra functionalities where traditional, more basic e-commerce sites fell short.
It counts with the advantage of providing a wide range of feature to build an advance e-commerce sight from scratch. However, this double-side sword eventually gets burdensome to administrate.

 ### 18. Difficult to use

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Furniture | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 21, 2022

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Lots of customizations options. With the help of a developer for most things.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Difficult to use. Lots of bugs and errors. We are constantly working with a developer to fix minor issues.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Work with developers that have lots of experience working with Magento.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am looking for an open-source eCommerce platform that allows many custom features.

 ### 19. Magento for a e-commerce developer

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 04, 2022

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Pagebuilder was built-in and intuitive. It also had functionality to create custom blocks and templates to minimize repeatedly entering code.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Setup was not as straight-forward and required setup of external libraries like elasticsearch, containerization.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I tried solving integrating a product list while also doing mirroring an already existing regional site for this client.

 ### 20. Magento Open Source

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Business Supplies and Equipment | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2021

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Flexibility and customizability are unmatched

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Complexity and difficulty of configuration is high

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Only go this route if you have an experienced web developer on staff. Magento is not something you want to figure out as you go.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Complex and diverse product offerings can be handled.

 ### 21. A great e-commerce framework to build on that could get more user-friendly

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's quite strong and solid and the database coverage is extensive.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

It can be a little bit slow in the process or cumbersome (for mass uploads for example --> it should be naturally easier to manipulate fields and attributes)

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Make sure that for your needs, Magento is necessary. It is a bit heavy, and it really depends on the depth and complexity of your catalog (mostly) ; if it is does not justify it, go for something simpler.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were able to launch the bricks of an e-commerce without investing too much time and money upfront, solving the other problems one by one.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Only recommended when on a tight budget

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1. Multiple Payment Gateway integration - Took 2 weeks.
2. Building custom reports lobby - 6 months ongoing
3. Automating the cache reset - 2 weeks

Benefits -
Only cost efficiency,

 ### 24. Move from 1.9 to 2.3 not easy

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

I like the new menu bar on the left as it is easier to navigate. We also like the additional customer info we can view from the Order screen.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

We are very disappointed in outside extensions not being compatible. we have struggled to get several companies products to work. We also have been very frustrated that we are unable to key orders on the backend ourselves. We have to enter them on the website rather than in Magento due to some glitch. Hoping this is fixed with 2.4 updates. We also discovered another error between Magento and Authorize.net. Authorize.net is declining the transaction but somehow Magento is still creating an order! yes, we have realized we have shipped thousands of dollars of orders to customers who never paid. the customer does not receive a declined or error message, instead they receive an order confirmation from Magento. Still trying to fix this.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Website speed is faster

 ### 25. Good enough software with mediocre infrastructure

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ruwently C. | Senior Online Merchandiser, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

There is a lot of integrations possible basically every other ecommerce software is able to integrate in Magento.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Due to the software being open source, makes for a really complicated and difficult to use program if each of these integrations were to be enabled and used.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

It’s a good starting software but would recommend a easier to use and more advanced software.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A big part of the ecommerce infrastructure is able to be streamlined if implemented the correct way.

 ### 26. Magento 1 was good but Magento 2 is not very good

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Health, Wellness and Fitness | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2020

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

 ### 27. Very finicky but powwerful

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

 ### 28. Decent but Unwealdy

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shaun S. | Senior Graphic Designer, Marketing & Social Media, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2018

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

It's a great and versatile eCommerce platform, which gives plenty of flexibility and has support for a vast amount of features and products. Being open source, you have carte blanche to change whatever you want and are only limited by your skillset and imagination.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Although it is flexible and customisable, the Magento platform is overly complex and it's greatest strength - the huge support of third-party developers - is also it's greatest weakness. There is no central support and if Magento of any of its TP components break down, you are on your own.
It also becomes way too problematic if you have a large database. In our experience, a large MySQL database gives rise to a myriad of speed and indexing issues.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

Have a good team of developers behind you and make sure you log every implementation and change to the original code, because with every update of issue, you will need to unpick and re-implement what you have done before.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

That being said, the ability to have a huge database and host the thing on whatever server you like, has been a boon for us in the past as there are no monthly subscription fees to pay and we have been able to use the site unchanged for the last 5 years.
However, due to switching developers mid-term, we have found that as the original developer did not keep a log of changes/additions, we are unable to update Magento as this will make the bespoke code unusable.

 ### 29. I used Magento Open Source for 3.5 years

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2019

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Flexibility. To create your website, Magento is one of the best platform that gives you design flexibility. Also it is a great platform for SEO.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Unless you are a trained programmer, it is hard to customize and make a use. It requires a certain programming skill.

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If you are a good programmer or have a good developer, Magento will give you the best flexibility and SEO capability. If not, you should go with Shopify.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

E-commerce site. We worked with a developer to build our site. Before we were using Yahoo! platform and moved to Magento Open Source. For a design wise, the possibility is endless.

 ### 30. Magento Community Good Option but Not for Everyone

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Fully customizable
Can run multiple stores within it

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Costly to maintain for a smaller company

**Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:**

If you're a smaller company with not a lot of resources to use toward development and IT support then there may be better solutions. However, it is a great solution to set yourself up for scaling the business. Just keep in mind that you are not an IT professional who can manage the admin of Magento yourself it will be expensive. Have had to get help form IT with product upload problems, plug-in installation and trouble shooting, etc. It's typically not a once click setup when new features are added and the new plug-ins can effect other systems so you really need someone who keeps an overview perspective when adding and maintaining the site.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Over 100 variants of products not a problem in Magento. This is a Shopify limitation requiring work arounds and/or making it not an option.
Customized drop ship programming an option because open source
Various plug-ins for admin and customer experience. A good amount of options available for whatever our needs are.

 ### 31. Magento CE 1.9

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2017

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Magento's biggest pro is it is open source, has a large help community and lots of examples available. It's open source architecture allows for a great deal of customization as needed.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

The same open source nature of Magento also means there can be a lot of code conflicts from poor implementations of code, particularly as the number of third party modules used on a store increases, and lots of old examples from outdated documentation. However, with proper attention to detail Magento is a very powerful platform for an eCommerce site. I have not tested Magento 2 extensively to know if some of these issues are better in the new version.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Providing eCommerce sales and support for our customers.

 ### 32. it has the potential to be good...

**What do you like best about Magento Open Source?**

Ease of use - I thought Magento was very easy to learn.

**What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?**

Magento often runs slow - we were always told it was a network issue, not magento itself.

**What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?**

it's a step up from old system, Able Commerce. It allowed us to add notes for open communication with our customers where the old system did not.
