## MadCap Flare Reviews
  ### 1. Feels half-baked, and doesnt replace Flare

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gideon B. | Head of Product Knowledge, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 02, 2022

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

Its online, which makes working with other writers easier, however, this only replaces what Flare never did very well with Git Integration

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

Its missing a lot of functionality that was in Flare
Its buggy, my license stopped working 2 months after it was issued
The price is too high for a half baked product

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

collaboration
online publishing is more reliable than Flare was

  ### 2. Powerful, Complex and missing some key features

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2022

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

Madcap Flare creates reusable and online content.

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

Does not have WYSIWYG
Numbering and sub-numbering/lists is sometimes complex. e.g., if you want to skip paragraphs in the numbered or bulleted list. If it is not intuitive (but needs to be taught, then there is a problem in the GUI)
Export to Word/RTF does a poor job
The text editor is a poor technology that came out 40 years ago in the original Word Perfect.

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Madcap Flare solves reusing content for different products and it is the tool we use to publish our content online

  ### 3. Flare Review

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Utilities | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 03, 2022

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

You can generate a doc in different formats.

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

The one thing I dislike most is creating big tables, with many rows and columns. It's just awful.
Before using Flare I was creating docs in FrameMaker and though it's not perfect, creating tables in FM is relatively easy and takes much less time to format.
I also don't like that when I am publishing a book and generating a PDF the process fails you have to close Acrobat, use TaskManager to kill ACRobat processes and eventually just restart the machine.
There are other features that I don't like, but my biggest gripe is with tables.

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I don't think it has in any way benefitted my team by switching from FM to Flare.
It takes much more time in Flare to generate a book. I can do the same thing in FM in half the time.

  ### 4. MadCap Flare Review

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Judy L. | Technical Writer

**Reviewed Date:** October 04, 2021

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

The thing I like most about MadCap Flare is how it checks for broken links and pages before building the publication. Also, the auto-suggestion features for snippets and variables is extremely handy.

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

What you see in MadCap Flare preview doesn't always reflect the output format. For instance, list numbering might be wrong in preview but come out right in the exported file. Other times, there are CSS styles that do not show up correctly. This software is also a bit too HTML and CSS extensive for writers without coding knowledge to use. The learning curve for becoming proficient in MadCap Flare can be a bit steep.

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are trying to use MadCap Flare as the single-source for creating online documentation. There are certain features in MadCap Flare that are easier to use than OxygenXML, but there are also parts of this software that is just difficult to use.

  ### 5. Works great... when it works.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Julious D. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2018

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

Easy to use- get off the ground quickly. Short learning curve- quickly master advanced skills. Feature heavy-
lots of handy and time saving features included. Conditional tagging- make content visible only when you want it. I could go on talking about it, but it is a very good program and tool when it works well. The support team is very personable and likable. I probably spent too much time working with them... but I think working with a team that truly understands the product is phenomenal. I have nothing but good things to say about the Madcap Support team.

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

Buggy! Bugs everywhere and no resolutions in sight... unless you upgrade to the latest version and pay cash or an ugly maintenance fee. Reporting bugs is of little consequence. The support team is great and they truly know their product... but the truth is that the company wants to push you into the newest version of the program instead of fixing issues with the older versions. I have a 2017 version that became unstable not long after my maintenance period had ended. Very frustrating and unfortunately... the only course of action I can truly take is upgrading to a newer version and hoping it remains stable for a longer period.

**Recommendations to others considering MadCap Flare:**

The concepts Flare introduces like Single Sourcing are valuable. I wish the products were more stable, but I do like the tools.

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Single Sourcing my content has saved massive amounts of time. Instead of spending time duplicating documentation you've already done, switch to single sourcing and use your content in new combinations while retaining the ability to make quick changes as needed. Rebranding content is ridiculously easy too. I have about 6-7 different brands that I use for our documentation now. Doing that in Word before was a nightmare. Most of the time I was locked in an endless cycle of updating the same documents that may have been custom branded. Now, I can spend time working on more projects and creating more documentation.

  ### 6. Madcap Flare is not a WYSISYG and if that is what you are expecting, don't buy it.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2018

**What do you like best about MadCap Flare?**

The plethora of formatting options, really not a ton. I find the s/w frustrating on more levels than I find it useful. I would not pick it again.

**What do you dislike about MadCap Flare?**

Not a WYSIWYG
Missing <p> tags
Table formatting

**Recommendations to others considering MadCap Flare:**

Be sure you know what you're getting and that this is not a WYSIWYG.

**What problems is MadCap Flare solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using MCF for online help. We adopted it to be consistent with another department already using it.

**Official Response from David Ferriot:**

> Hello, we do not put <p> tags in tables by default. If you hit return in tables, we add them automatically. There is also a menu item for it. Please let me know the best contact method and our support team can reach out to offer any assistance.
