Also love that they have a network of fractional CFOs for set-up guidance, we appreciated this and used one of their recommended folks. Implementation is super easy compared to what was out in the market. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** It lacks some key integrations for SaaS, such as Recurly and it would be great if the Xero integration had some more attention paid to it, you cant link the cash summary which is a report we like using and I needed to reach out to support to have the numbers adjusted due to the expenses coming through as a positive deduction in the formula. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** The visual dashboards were what was really missing from our previous set up, which was using Google Workbooks and pivot tables, now we have a much clearer picture for forecasting and cashflow. Causal has also significantly reduced the EOM reporting time and because its all connected to our books less room for data entry error. ### 2. The concept of assigning categories to variables is really powerful and makes scaling models very quick and easy. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** Auditing large models can be time-consuming and occasionally it's not instantly apparent if a variable in a formula is filtered **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** The processing time of our models in Causal is usually less than a minute whereas in our old model it was around an hour. Making changes to the model is o much quicker and we are now able to generate many more scenarios than before. ### 7. I'd have gladly kept the plan but at I think $300 it was very hard to justify after I was done creating my model. Perhepas you could offer a more flexible plan like, one time payment to build your model but then $10-20/month just to keep it alive? **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** Building a financial forecast for my startup. I love the fact that it's much more intuitive than excel. After the inital learning curve it was really easy to use. ### 8. As long as one keeps the forecast up-to-date, Causal's dashboard and charts tools produce excellent turn-key reports that can be submitted to investors, stakeholders, etc. This saves time because I don't have to put the numbers into my own format and create reports from scratch. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** Causal takes some time to learn. A new user should really invest time into learning how to use Causal by watching multiple videos and training. There is a lot of training available on Causal's site but it requires some time and dedication to learn. Even if you are an expert Excel/Google Sheets user, Causal works differently and you can't easily just jump in without spending time to learn first. I also think that it can be hard to remember which file I was working in and switch between different files easily. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** Mainly Causal helps me be able to run scenario analysis on a certain spreadsheet/financial forecast, and it provides nice-looking and professional visual charts and reports. ### 9. They also have a team that is very responsive to questions and platform feedback. Causal allows users to easily build models and present the data in customizable graphs. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** I have faced a few challenges with causal. One of the challenges is getting a new employee up to speed on the platform. Causal offers a large amount of training but there is a learning curve between the simple trainings and a companies fully built complex model structure. Another challenge is due my companies vast usage of causal and the amount of interconnected models and scenarios we have there have been speed and model size issues. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** When we have run into issues with model size and speed Causal has swiftly stepped in to identify the root cause of these issues and how we could address the problem. They have also been willing to discuss large model changes we want to make prior to making them to ensure we optimize the platform. ### 12. However, some of the default views can leave one wanting just a bit more. I would recommend a bit more UI/UX research for non-traditional users. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** I think the UI/UX is really good overall, however, if you are not an accountant, the use of this tool is a bit confusing. This is not a good thing, because a strength of a tool like this is in multidepartmental use. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** Financial projections and a revenue climb are the two primary uses that I have for Causal at the moment. I am not sure of too many other use cases for my role at the moment. ### 14. Modular concept enables huge flexibility of use and the ability to share specific models (Revenue / Headcount etc) with specific teams. Scenario modeling is extremely intuitive and thus it is very easy to present scenarios to C-Suite members. Actuals vs Plan version capability is fantastic. Resources and documentation are in-depth and very useful. The team is responsive and very knowledgeable. It's a great platform! **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** There is no overall "Mapping" tab where you can see which GL Accounts are mapped to which variables - this means you have to go into each individual model and/or data source to ensure things are mapped correctly, this can become very difficult if using Xero as each GL Account is pulled through x number of times dependent upon x number of tracking categories. There is no overall place to see which models are shared with which employee in your organisation - you have to click into each model and then see whom it has been shared with. Some small UI improvements could be made to make outputs look more professional - for example, the alignment of columns in different pivot tables in the same report is dependent upon text length and thus columns don't automatically stack "correctly". Sometimes it can be cumbersome to load models dependent upon the volume of data and the number of charts and refreshes can take a long time. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** Efficient Month-End Investor / Board reporting, using relatively straightforward consolidation of multiple entities using different operating currencies. But, if you are wanting to come up with different scenarios or play with variations on data, it becomes challenging very quickly—if not more or less impossible. Causal makes it easy to set up underlying data and assumptions, connect to live data sources, and, essentially, play with the numbers to test assumptions and get more out of your data. Their team is also super helpful and they provide a lot of guidance if needed. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** As with any advanced tool, the learning curve can be challenging. I have also found that it’s easy to set up and play with Causal but hard to stick with it and make it part of my day-to-day toolset. This is more a lack of discipline on my part than an issue with Causal, though. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** For anyone working with forecasting data and planning ahead, Causal is amazing. Create scenarios and you have a pragmatic view of the future. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** The awesomeness of Causel comes with some chaos. Fact 1. Not all accountants are super excel users. It's hard to adapt to programmer mindset/mental maps. Fact 2. Not all accountants are programmers, we do not know what is a string or variable, to be honest. (its too much technicality, sometimes) **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've used Causal for some time only and had to stop using it because of its technicality, I have used it for P&L, Actual vs Budget, Depts performance and cash forecasting. Level-based Education required (like a course level 1,2,3) Library tools are required, Not sure how to simply search for a command. especially when in the middle of something,(watching a whole video takes a lot of time and distracts from the main point) Setup a simple Library for commands. ### 19. At workplaces, usually, one person builds any excel financial model at a time, and any complex financial model requires 7-8 hours for a new person to understand how formulas are linked. Looking at every formula and moving to and fro between the sheets is the usual process when any new person has to get a good grasp of the model. Causal makes this tedious process irrelevant and solves a crucial problem by making each cell readable through named cell references. This saves the trouble of moving between the sheets and also reduces the long process of going through every formula non-blank cells. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** Excel simplicity enables the use of the spreadsheet for a wide range of purposes such as data manipulation, budget sheets, calendars, data entry, and financial models. While Casual makes financial model easier to read, create and share, other features of excel such as data manipulation, data wrangling, macros are still unreplacable. So, despite having an excellent tool for financial modeling, excel remains an essential part of office tools and still has to be paid for in addition to Causal subscription. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** I made a financial model of a K-12 school in Casual. Despite being a completely new tool, it was easy to learn and very intuitive. The model didn't require moving between sheets, double-check cell references, and it took me at least 20% lesser time than it would take any user to make in Excel. Model output is also more visually appealing in Casual. There is an excellent feature in Causal that inputs can be entered as a range rather than having a fixed value. This range input value makes sensitivity analysis 100x easier than what any excel tool provides. Making scenarios is also a few buttons clicks on causal. Sensitivity analysis and scenarios with Causal make analysis super convenient and a lot more insightful than excel. ### 30. I must add that every time I come back to the tool there's a new update as the app is growing and adapting fast, so there's also this. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** I now use Causal whenever modeling growth loops under Reforge framework to understand and help product leaders answer what is the best growth lever to dedicate focus and design initiatives according to their inputs and actuals. I also use Causal for personal investing to understand how my dividends will snowball based on different investment cadence scenarios. ### 31. The visualization of different variables is a nice touch, and in general the way that Causal allows you to play around with interactions, scenarios etc. really strengthens understanding of domain models. **What do you dislike about Lucanet?** Causal runs a bit slow as your model grows - even on the paid plan. **Recommendations to others considering Lucanet:** I would recommend anyone finding modelling in excel tedious and with a need for explaining / visualizing interactions in said model, to try out Causal. There is not enough training material or courses or excel templates. The user experience could have been better. The front end seems very simple and not very smooth for users. **Recommendations to others considering Lucanet:** The front end of the program provides reporting capabilities, but these may not be enough. I suggest the activation of Excel plug-in and using Excel formulations, interface formulation to create dashboards. **What problems is Lucanet solving and how is that benefiting you?** The finance department uses this software during the reporting and controlling activities.
