## Liferay Digital Experience Platform Reviews
  ### 1. Liferay DXP: The 'Reset' for Our Legacy Portals

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mattheus P. | System Coordinator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

I have been working with Liferay for about a year and a half, coming from a development background and now acting as a coordinator. To be honest, what really 'got us' and justifies the use of the platform in our daily routine are two main things: the portlet architecture and, mainly, the access control system.

As a developer, the idea of portlets is a lifesaver. We can modularize our applications very well. Instead of building a monolith, we create independent and reusable components, which greatly facilitates maintenance and task distribution within the team. Everyone can work in their own 'little box' without major headaches.

Now, as a coordinator, what really gives me peace of mind is the permissions system. The granularity of Liferay's access control is what we use the most. Defining roles, teams, and specifying exactly who sees which portlet, on which page, is fundamental to our business. This gives us the assurance that a certain group of users will only access what is allowed to them, and we can configure all of this natively, without needing to develop complex permission logics manually. It is robust and reliable.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

He is powerful for what he sets out to do, especially in the back-end and security aspects, but all this robustness comes at a cost in complexity, performance, and a certain slowness in the development cycle.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being very direct, the main problem that Liferay is solving for us is the technical debt of very legacy portals we had here. We were stuck with old technologies, with an architecture that no one wanted to maintain anymore. Any small change was a hassle, and the experience for the end user was quite poor.
The great benefit that Liferay brought was giving us a 'reset'. It put us in a new development cycle. Instead of patching a system that was already at the end of its life, we started building on a more modern and structured platform.

And the turning point for us was, without a doubt, the ability to use React for customizations. We got rid of that feeling of a 'rigid frontend' that I had already mentioned. Now, we can create modern and dynamic components for the user, with the agility that React gives us, but without giving up the security and back-end structure that Liferay offers, especially in access control, which is our pillar here.

So, in practice, the benefit is this: we are managing to modernize the user experience at the front end with React, while, behind the scenes, we have a solid and secure base for content and permissions management. Liferay is serving as the backbone that allows us to plug in these newer technologies, something that was unthinkable in our old portals.

  ### 2. Intuitive UI, Strong Integrations, and Scalable Performance

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dixit B. | Full Stack Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 12, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

What I like most about Liferay Digital Experience Platform is its clean, intuitive UI/UX, which makes it straightforward for both developers and business users to manage content and workflows efficiently. It also has strong integration capabilities, enabling seamless connections with third-party systems and other enterprise tools. In my experience, the platform delivers reliable performance and scales well, even when supporting large, complex applications. From a pricing and ROI standpoint, its flexibility and open architecture can help reduce long-term costs. Liferay also offers solid support and helpful onboarding resources, which makes adoption smoother. On top of that, its growing AI and intelligence features strengthen personalization and support more data-driven decision-making.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

One area where Liferay Digital Experience Platform could improve is the occasional presence of bugs, particularly when using newer features or after updates, which can affect stability in certain use cases. The headless APIs are powerful, but they still have limitations around flexibility and consistency across endpoints, which can make more complex integrations harder than expected. In addition, I’ve run into issues with the batch APIs, including bugs and inconsistent behavior during bulk operations, and that can reduce both efficiency and reliability. Addressing these points would go a long way toward improving the overall developer experience.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Liferay Digital Experience Platform helps solve the challenge of managing and delivering consistent, personalized digital experiences across multiple channels. By centralizing content management, user data, and workflows, it reduces fragmentation and makes it more efficient to manage websites and applications.

It also helps with integration complexity by offering tools to connect with various enterprise systems, which supports a more unified digital ecosystem. As a result, it can reduce development time and lower operational overhead.

For me, this translates into faster development cycles, simpler content management, and a stronger ability to deliver tailored user experiences. Overall, it boosts productivity, streamlines processes, and helps achieve better outcomes with less manual effort.

  ### 3. Liferay 7.4: Low-Code Freedom and Upgrade-Friendly Client Extensions

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 05, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Liferay 7.4 has completely changed how we balance “quick wins” with “complex builds.” On one side, the low-code empowerment through Liferay Objects has been genuinely liberating. I can now create custom data models and connect them to workflows and forms without a single deployment or needing a backend developer. It’s turned what used to be an IT backlog into something much closer to a self-service reality.

On the other side, when we do need to write code, Client Extensions have addressed the “upgrade dread” we used to feel with OSGi modules. Since they run out of process and communicate through APIs, our developers can work in React or Vue without having to be Liferay Java experts. That kind of decoupled architecture is exactly what a modern enterprise needs.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

While the platform is extremely powerful, the initial learning curve can be steep. Moving from traditional portlet development to the newer Client Extension model takes a real shift in mindset, and that adjustment can slow a team down during the first few sprints of adoption.

With the fast pace of the Quarterly Release cycle, I sometimes notice that the official documentation trails the newest features by a bit. As a result, it can take some trial and error—or even a support ticket—to fully grasp the nuances of a brand-new 7.4 capability.

The administrative interface is also very feature-rich, which I appreciate, but it can feel a little UI-heavy. Having to click through deeply nested menus to locate specific configuration options for Objects or System Settings can be tedious until you’ve memorized where everything lives.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Liferay has helped us solve a long-term maintenance headache. By using Client Extensions, we’ve been able to decouple our custom React code from the Liferay core. As a result, we can stay on the Quarterly Release cycle and pick up new features every three months without constantly worrying that our customizations will break during updates.

  ### 4. Scalable Low-Code Powerhouse with Client Extensions and Strong Security

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** André C. | Senior System Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

I love how Liferay DXP blends low-code agility with objects and auto-generated CRUD, while maintaining market standards like Docker, Elasticsearch, and REST/GraphQL APIs. It's focus on Client Extensions, robust SAML/OAuth2 security, and clear docs makes it incredibly scalable

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Liferay is powerful, but the learning curve for advanced customizations can be steep. The resource overhead for on-premise setups is significant, and while Client Extensions are great, migrations legacy hooks/OSGI modules to this new paradigm requires substantial effort

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Liferay DXP solves data fragmentation by unifying content, commerce, and self-service into one platform. it eliminates IT bottlenecks through low-code tools (Objects/Fragments), benefiting me with faster delivery times and a seamless, secure experienced for both users and developers

  ### 5. Robust Tools but Needs Flexibility Enhancements

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** João Miguel de Souza Cruz Ramos dos S. | Desenvolvedor de front-end Junior, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

I use the Liferay Digital Experience Platform to develop web systems for the enterprise I work for. I like the way Liferay DXP offers scalability, organization, simplicity, and robust tools to develop a solution. The robust tools make development so much easier and organized. The initial setup is simple, thanks to Liferay's documentation.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

I think the Liferay DXP can be more flexible with something, like the development with fragments can use service locator or more Java methods that is only disponibilizated on Freemarker Templates. Also, when I am creating a fragment, but I need the URL of a content that is coming from the collection provider, there is no way to get the URL content of the item, just in templates.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Liferay Digital Experience Platform to solve web system issues like content management, consistent design, and workflows. Its robust tools make development easier and more organized.

  ### 6. Powerful and Highly Scalable, but Heavy and Complex

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andika K. | Operational Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 02, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Liferay DXP excels in enterprise-grade content management (CMS) and robust API integration capabilities. Its OSGi-based modular architecture and multi-tenant authentication make building large-scale portals highly secure, structured, and easy to scale for complex business needs.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

The platform has a very steep learning curve, requires heavy server resources, and enterprise licensing is exceptionally expensive.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Liferay DXP solves system fragmentation by unifying siloed enterprise data, legacy systems, and APIs into a single portal.
Benefit: It provides secure, highly granular role-based access control and delivers a consistent, unified digital experience for employees, partners, and customers from one centralized platform.

  ### 7. Liferay: a robust, secure, and competitive low-code DXP, ready for AI

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2026

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Simplified UX/UI integration through the Low-Code capabilities of the solution and the integrated management of design systems. A flexibility of integration adapted to the most demanding environments in terms of security and compliance. Liferay is a solution designed to operate and support high usage loads and the design of critical systems. Liferay is one of the most competitive enterprise DXPs, if not the most competitive, in terms of pricing. Liferay is based on proven functional and technical standards, making it easier to handle than other competing solutions. Liferay offers numerous AI-related features such as secure semantic search, for example. It integrates very well with most LLMs on the market as well as with orchestration and automation tools such as n8n or Camunda. Finally, Liferay offers its own agent design tool: IA Hub.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Some features that are not really turnkey and sometimes require integration effort to work. The advancement in technical skills is hindered by the lack of up-to-date quality documentation.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Liferay allows solving various problems, such as the fragmentation of the user experience (and data), the lack of fluidity in user journeys, the lack of personalization, as well as the lack of consistency in the experience across different channels (web, mobile). It also helps to expose data in a secure and reliable manner, among other things.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matt H. | Software Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 15, 2016

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

We run Liferay as a headless CMS and the thing I like best about it is that is able to do this. It provides us with very powerful CMS management but we can develop in whatever tech we want.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Unfortunately Liferay is not as stable as I would like. We've had instances were we are troubleshooting and it turns out that Liferay had gone down again and that there was no bug.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Solving a member interaction problem for a large later. Using Liferay has allowed us to manage a huge amount of users effectively.

  ### 33. Best CMS Portal

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kona Laxman D. | Lead Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 18, 2015

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

It is a quite good product, I am using Liferay since 4 years and i implemented several solutions for several customers now.I like installation of Liferay is also pretty easy, Just we can download zip and unzip it than use.
The most liking thing is it is an opensource so that we can customize up to our extent and requirement. Themes are very powerful so that we can change lot of UI stuff and most impressive for user to see.By hooks we can change lot of default behaviour.Multi site web application with administrator delegated is awesome one in Liferay

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

The biggest caveat is documentation. It's getting better, but it is still difficult to find info on lots of things. Technically still it is some what lagging providing secure transaction. There is potential conflict in third party library versions.

**Recommendations to others considering Liferay Digital Experience Platform:**

If you really want Web2.0 tools by default,Need of CMS and User management go for Liferay. It is really awesome open source portal and you will get best support from Liferay and Forum people

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Integrate information, people and processes are with in organization boundaries in a hierarchy level. By using CMS like AssetPublisher and WebContent we can give best solutions easily for creating multiple email templates and if we update the content of email template than we no need to change any code or properties. we have best user managament by providing hierarchies through organizations and sites

  ### 34. Good Open Source Portal with Good Integrations

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chaitanya Kumar C. | Software Engineer, E-Learning, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 11, 2015

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

It's open source portal and comes with lot of out of box portlets.
Documentation is very good from Liferay 6.2.
It has very large community.
It comes with CMS tools also it let's you to integrate alfresco.
It provides SSO integration like LDAP, CAS.
It has great flexibility to organize Users, Roles, Sites.
It allows you to create website in minutes.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Developers need to have good skills which increases cost.
Few resources are available.
You have to purchase the license for enterprise edition which gives extra features as well as support.
Documentation still can be improved, it's difficult to do some things which should be easily achieved.

**Recommendations to others considering Liferay Digital Experience Platform:**

If any body want to build portal with CMS and User Management you can really consider this.
But you should keep in mind that human resources costs are high.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I created CMS websites for my clients as well built products around it's multi tenancy architecture.
It

  ### 35. Liferay is a great portal

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michael B. | Product Ventures, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Liferay is a solid portal, implemented in Java. The source is right there, so I can figure out how things work when I need to develop my own contributions.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

The upgrades can be a bit rough. Sometimes the data migrations fail to produce a valid database. But this has been resolved by re-building the db, and hasn't actually blocked us.

The tooling is focused on configuration via the user interface which doesn't match our SDLC which is more focused on continuous integration via formal builds.

The worst thing is just the weight of it -- slow startup, heavy build cycle, etc. This really slows down development, and discourages our developers.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Liferay in two scenarios:
1) As the foundation of a solution providing users, groups, administration, and a container for custom applications. In this scenario, the benefits are head-start on common application requirements.
2) As a portal, for all the usual portal reasons. The open-source nature provides tremendous benefits for developer education.

  ### 36. Great platform but with a few hickups

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andreas M. | Software Developer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

The big community surrounding it and the vast tools included. You get very much tools out-of-the-box which is great to use. It is (kind of) easy to modify the platform modules to your own needs and it is very versatile to customize.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

It can be a bit hard to understand some of standard tools, and also it isn't always so clear what the code does just by looking at it. Some more documentation would be nice :)

Previously it has been a problem with new releases brake more than it fixes. But this seems to be fixed with going towards OSGi.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm solving many different problems, but mainly it is intranet related. Customizing Liferay to fit a customers intranet is fun and challenging. The benefits is that Liferay is greatly versatile and customizable.

  ### 37. Excellent service, support, and a viable platform for portal technology.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tramale T. | Senior Muckity Muck, Computer Games, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 07, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Open source tool with plenty of community contributors. Backed by a solid for profit organization with stellar talent and a highly responsive team. Solution is in the top ranks of competitive set and appears to be growing at a steady pace.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Not enough engineers in the space. There is a scarcity of Liferay talent, and every new engineer that shows interest is quickly snatched up by Liferay or a Liferay partner. This makes it difficult to find talent willing to go internal to the enterprise. Best solution is to take existing engineers and retrain them.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Looking to redesign, and redeploy a core business process for our partners. Basically, a newly envisioned developer portal for our platform. The solution has already proven to be of benefit in time to market and developer acceptance/adoption. The pricing and support have also been superb.

  ### 38. What can't you do with Liferay

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacob C. | Portal/Web Systems Developer, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

I like the extendability. The custom portlets and hooks allow almost infinite customization. As long as you understand the problem you are trying to solve, you can probably get Liferay to do it.

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

There is so much you can do that it can get confusing getting everything to work together right. It's not too bad of a problem to have though. Also, upgrading to the latest version can be an unpleasant experience.

**Recommendations to others considering Liferay Digital Experience Platform:**

You will want to make sure you pay for support. The forums are great, but sometimes you will get stuck and you will need to talk to an expert.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can target content to very specific user bases. Liferay knows so much about our users from our connection to LDAP that we can lock content down to only the users that need to be able to see it

  ### 39. I work on project based on Liferay 6.2.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michal F. | Analyst Programmer, Information Technology and Services

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

- lot of things are there immediately after the installation
- you can do quickly a large application if customer is smart and agree with LF standards

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

- some sources really need to be refactored (html, js, java in single file)
- better documentation
- modularity (I hope that Liferay 7 will have it :) )

**Recommendations to others considering Liferay Digital Experience Platform:**

You need lot of study to be good Liferay developer :)

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- we need to develop lot of things from the scratch
- modularity in the future will really help us

  ### 40. Liferay for a University Intranet

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam M. | Web Developer, Computer Software

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2014

**What do you like best about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Rapid application development in Java. The new features in the new versions of liferay

**What do you dislike about Liferay Digital Experience Platform?**

Having to fight to get our system upgraded from previous versions to current versions. We get behind and then it is difficult to do and takes a lot of work.

**What problems is Liferay Digital Experience Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?**

University Intranet that is accessed by students, staff and faculty
