Not only does Let's Encrypt work well, but it's free! Each website gets its own Private Key. Through the control panel, it's super easy to add an SSL/TLS certificate to my domain and then enable it. The only thing I dislike is with the free product version, I need to renew it manually every 3 months, but then that's what you get for the free version! The free version works great, but you need to renew it manually every 3 months, so make sure you set up reminders on your calendar. Let's Encrypt does send reminder notifications, but it helps to set up an alternate reminder, so you aren't left without an SSL/TLS Certificate for your websites. Let's Encrypt most notable feature is that it's free. It's provided Open Source without the typical upselling efforts of other free products. Impressively, Let's Encrypt was created with the primary goal of making using the web safer for everyone. As a sign of it's legitimacy, Let's Encrypt is supported by Google, Mozilla, the Electronic Frontier Foundation as well as other major corporations and foundations. Fortunately, it's also generally very reliable. Over the years, we have had very few issues securing new sites and keeping them safely encrypted. Let's Encrypt is also widely supported and usually easy to add to a website. Many web-hosting companies offer one-click installation via cPanel. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Letsencrypt? This is not a criticism, but Let's Encrypt is not for every situation. If you have highly sensitive transactions, you should use premium encryption solutions. For example, Let's Encrypt does not provide Extended Validation (EV SSL) Certificates which prove who the website owner is. It should also be noted that some large hosting companies do not make adding Let's Encrypt certificates easy. These hosting companies do this so they can sell you their own premium encryption products. However, to me, this is a mark against those hosting companies and not Let's Encrypt. (We use a top notch hosting company with easy Let's Encrypt implementation.) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Letsencrypt: If you web-hosting company does not offer Let's Encrypt integration (and you only need basic SSL security), you should at least consider switching hosting companies. Of course, there are other factors in choosing a hosting company, but in our experience, companies that want to find unneeded charges in one area do so in multiple areas. For us at least, such companies are not worthy of our business. If you add Let's Encrypt to an existing site, it is important to know that you will likely have to fix links to a number of media assets and other resources to secure the lock symbol for your domain (ie. to be fully protected). If you use Wordpress, you can use a plugin like 'Really Simple SSL' to assist with this process. If you are having challenges, it's worth engaging an expert for this one-time process. At its most basic level, we use Let's Encrypt to ensure that data travelling between our servers and end users is encrypted. This protects both our clients and their customers (and other stakeholders). Let's Encrypt allows us to provide our clients with SSL site encryption without looking like we are trying to gouge our customers financially for a similar product for which some web-hosting / security companies charge $88+ US a year. Most clients are only prepared to spend a certain amount of money. What we lose in one area, we generally gain in another -- all while providing more value to those that we serve.
