**What do you like best about Leica Geosystems?**

What I like best about Leica Geosystems is how the entire ecosystem—field hardware, Captivate, Infinity, and Cyclone—delivers a smooth, reliable workflow that directly saves us time, improves quality, and reduces rework across surveying, construction, scanning, and monitoring projects.

UI/UX: The user experience is a standout. Captivate’s touchscreen interface is intuitive and readable in bright sunlight, so operators spend less time tapping through menus and more time measuring. Infinity’s clean layout simplifies complex network adjustments and QC checks. Cyclone’s 3D navigation is responsive and the ribbon-style toolbars make it easy to find the processing functions I need without digging through layers of submenus. The consistency across the software platforms means once you learn one, the others feel familiar.

Integrations: Leica’s tools integrate seamlessly with each other and with third-party software. Data flows straight from Captivate into Infinity via the field-to-office sync, and from there into CAD or GIS packages without format headaches. Cyclone handles many common point cloud formats and supports standard exchange formats like LAS, E57, and PTS, so moving data between clients and other software (like AutoCAD or Revit) is simple. The hardware also works well with external monitoring sensors and cloud services, which keeps our workflows connected.

Performance: In the field, the total stations and laser scanners are fast to set up and deliver high measurement accuracy even in tough conditions—dust, heat, and vibration don’t degrade the results. Cyclone processes massive point clouds efficiently; registration of hundreds of scans runs without crashing, and the viewing performance stays smooth. Infinity crunches adjustment calculations quickly, giving us reliable coordinates without long waits.

Pricing/ROI: The upfront investment is undeniably high, but what I like is the return we get. The time saved through fast setups, automated data processing, and reduced manual rework translates directly into lower labor costs per project. The long-term durability of the hardware means fewer repair bills, and the improved deliverable quality has helped us win repeat contracts. The ecosystem effectively pays for itself over time.

Support/Onboarding: Onboarding was straightforward thanks to the intuitive interfaces and built-in help tools. For more advanced training, Leica’s support team and local dealer networks were knowledgeable and responsive, getting us through learning curves quickly. When we did encounter a hardware issue, the support turnaround kept downtime minimal, which we value in the middle of a project.

AI/Intelligence: While AI is not the headline feature yet, the automated routines are very useful. Cyclone’s point cloud classification and auto-extract tools handle basic cleanup and feature extraction well, and the user-defined macros in Infinity and Captivate allow us to semi-automate repetitive analysis steps. These intelligent helpers reduce manual work and error, and I look forward to even more advanced machine learning integrations in future updates.

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

While the ecosystem is strong overall, several pain points consistently surface across our projects.

Pricing / ROI: The initial purchase cost is very steep. Hardware, software licenses, and annual maintenance fees add up quickly, and for a smaller firm the upfront investment can be hard to justify even with the long-term ROI. Leica's licensing model for software like Cyclone and Infinity can also be confusing, with separate modules for different tasks that feel like they should be included in the base package.

Performance: With very large point cloud datasets in Cyclone, we still experience slowdowns during rendering and export. The software can be resource-hungry, requiring high-end workstations to run smoothly, which adds hidden cost. In the field, Captivate occasionally freezes when toggling between large map files and live measurements, costing us a few minutes of reboot time.

UI / UX: While the interfaces are functional, the visual design and menu structure have not been fully modernized. Cyclone's older toolbars and right-click workflows feel dated compared to newer point cloud software. Infinity's ribbon layout is better, but there is an inconsistency between the look of Captivate, Infinity, and Cyclone that disrupts the experience when moving from field to office.

Integrations: Despite good format support, real-time collaboration between the tools could be smoother. Syncing projects from Captivate to Infinity sometimes requires manual steps or re-importing, and direct integration with common construction management platforms like Procore or BIM 360 is limited without third-party connectors. Cyclone's export to CAD still occasionally misplaces coordinate systems, requiring extra checks.

Support / Onboarding: While local dealer support is generally good, direct Leica technical support can have long response windows, especially for specialized scanning or monitoring problems. Onboarding new team members is still time-consuming because training materials are scattered, and there is no single unified learning path across the hardware and software.

AI / Intelligence: Automation features are useful but basic. The point cloud classification in Cyclone often fails on complex scenes like vegetation overhangs or construction clutter, needing heavy manual cleanup. There is no integrated machine learning toolkit for custom feature extraction, which puts Leica behind competitors that already offer AI-driven classification and object recognition.

The biggest improvement I would like to see is a more transparent, modular pricing structure, performance optimization for dense point clouds, a fully modernized and unified UI across all products, faster direct support, and a serious investment in AI-assisted automation so that routine processing steps take even less manual effort.

**What problems is Leica Geosystems solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before we adopted the Leica ecosystem, our biggest struggle was the disconnect between field capture and office processing. Survey crews used multiple standalone devices, data transfer was manual and error-prone, and merging point clouds, total station measurements, and monitoring data meant hours of reformatting and quality checking across different software. This led to delays, occasional data misalignment, and costly rework in both construction stakeout and as-built verification.

Now, with the unified Leica Geosystems workflow (Captivate in the field, Infinity for survey processing and adjustments, Cyclone for scanning), all our data streams converge in a single environment with consistent coordinate systems and formats. That integration alone has reduced our office processing time by roughly 30 to 40 percent on a typical scanning or monitoring project. We no longer spend hours manually aligning data from different vendors.

The UI/UX consistency across Captivate, Infinity, and Cyclone, while not perfect, still makes a practical difference. Field crews pick up the touchscreen interface quickly, and office technicians move between the three platforms without retraining every time. This has shortened onboarding for new hires from weeks to just a few days of guided practice, which directly lowers training costs.

Performance in tough conditions is another problem solved. Our previous instruments struggled with dust, heat, and sudden vibration on construction sites, often requiring recalibration or failing to lock onto prisms. Leica total stations and scanners hold their calibration and deliver stable measurement accuracy even in high-vibration areas and direct sun. The result is fewer site revisits and less scrapped data. We have measured a 50 percent drop in field rework since switching.

For pricing/ROI, the upfront cost is high, no question. But the time saved across crews, combined with the reduction in rework and improved deliverable consistency, has made the investment worthwhile for us. We recently won a large monitoring contract partly because we could demonstrate end-to-end data traceability and quality assurance that the Leica workflow provides. The long hardware lifespan also spreads the cost over many years, making the total cost of ownership competitive with cheaper systems that require frequent replacement.

Support/Onboarding has been especially critical because here in Malawi there are no local Leica training centres or resident expert guides. When we needed to get our team up to speed on Cyclone for large point cloud registration, we had to push hard for dedicated support. The local dealer eventually arranged for an application engineer to come on-site for a full day, which cut weeks off the learning curve. Direct Leica support for niche scanning problems can still be slow, and the distance adds delays, but the combination of remote training materials and that one intensive on-site visit got our crew productive on scanning jobs inside two weeks instead of the months we first expected. Even so, the lack of in-region training remains a gap, and having more accessible support pathways or certified local trainers would benefit us and other firms in Southern Africa enormously.

Finally, while AI/Intelligence in Leica's tools is not yet a headline feature, the automated routines we do have (Cyclone’s noise filter, auto-classification, Infinity’s adjustment macros) still solve the problem of repetitive manual editing. For simple building scans, the auto-extraction of pipes and steel members saves several hours of manual modeling per project. It’s basic, but it already reduces human error and gives our surveyors a cleaner starting point, freeing them for higher-value analysis instead of clicking through noise points all day. We look forward to more AI-driven feature extraction in future updates, which would multiply this benefit further.

**What do you like best about Leica Geosystems?**

It's easy to put simple buildings together.  Anything that's multiple stories or has objects in the way will throw this software and your patience through the blender.

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

Where do I start? You can't move projects around on your or someone else's computer easily. Looking through large buildings is an absolute nightmare because you have no reference as to where you are. Cloud in Trueslicer loads and unloads on a consistant basis. Do you like viewers? Well it's ok if you have one level but try splitting up multiple. You can move scans to a different sitemap but in and view it treats it as one building, forcing you to tear apart your registration. Limit boxes? Limit your expectation cause they don't work on export. I know there are limits to this software but when they released this software it barely worked. I'm glad they finally allowed us to export MY DATA decimated. Leica claimed it was theres when I asked them about decimation.

You're really saving time on the capture end of this package. The RTC is fast and mostly reliable although, there is no inclinometer in it, so you can't trust the ground being level. All that time saved is burned with registration. Don't get me wrong. If you know what you're doing and it's a simple box building you can really knock out projects. The world is sadly, not perfect.

**What do you like best about Leica Geosystems?**

My company purchased a BLK 360 from Leica a couple years ago. We use the Cyclone 360 software developed by Leica to register the scans. The device is very easy to use just push the button and scanner does it's thing. The software took some getting used to and I had some training. I have enough experience now with it that I am comfortable and confident in using it.

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

Something I dislike about the device is the way files from the scans are transferred from the device to the computer. I wish there was either an SD card slot or a USB plug to plug the device into the computer so file transfer was quicker and easier.

**Recommendations to others considering Leica Geosystems:**

I have no recommendations but, just to get training on the device and software.

**What problems is Leica Geosystems solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're scanning existing conditions of buildings then creating AutoCAD and Revit files from the point clouds that scanner creates. We can measure things in accurately in the scan and in takes panoramic pictures.

The software was easy to use and improved overall workflow. Allowed easy transfer of data from the instrument to software. Software tools provided ways of filtering data easily for import into other programs.

Proprietary file type can cause some compatibility issues. We have also experienced several software bugs and that reduced our productivity and required support to fix.

Leica Geosystems is helping our company get accurate field measurements to use in our projects. The more accurate the initial data is, the less issues we will have later on in our projects.

**What do you like best about Leica Geosystems?**

Software was easy to use.  Didn't take long to figure out how to use it.  Didn't have to review manuals or anything, just started using right away.  With a few clicks we could get the point cloud in the model and available for the users to view issues that we may not have found before.  

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

There was not much that I disliked.  It is not something that we use in our everyday workflow.  We used it a couple of times to try it, but couldn't find a good use case to use it continually. 

**What problems is Leica Geosystems solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed to get the point clouds into Revit.  The software made it very easy to do this.  With a couple of clicks we could get the point cloud into the model accurately.   With the Point Cloud in the model we were able to identify issues in the field that we may not have been able to identify without.  The software saved us money in the long run, but pointing out these issues.

The improved workflow. The reduced time to achieve a finished product. Savings in time from improved scan time, no need to transfer data off the scanner to get to the computer, everything is preregistered.

Would be better if i could connect straight to a laptop and get data feed directly, then I could process data immediately even while I'm still scanning.

We are better able to find variations from design to as built quickly and accurately. We are able to better coordinate the installation of new systems around existing systems and structures.

Cyclone Registration was difficult to figure out prior to taking a training class. Now it's not as difficult, but without the training it would have been near impossible trying to figure it out from on the job training.

Compared to other scanners we operate our Leica RTC360 has a fast scan time which produces consistent results.

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

When using the scanner with no Survey Control we often find tilt error which can be time consuming to fix. Also when you import the 360 degree photos into other registration software they do not appear as clear as in cyclone.

We laser scan all our projects to produce a point cloud model - which we then use to produce shop drawings for steel fabrication. The laser scan allows for quick and easy site measures with great accuracy.

The scanning system was able to pick up overhead catinary system cables which helped us verify their location, when other scanners couldn't do so.

Keeping our models in one location for coordination and layout has created an efficient way for us to manage multiple projects at once. 
We use Leica iCon robots for site layout and QA/QC of MEP systems that have been coordinated.
I am never worried about accuracy using Leica equipment

**What do you dislike about Leica Geosystems?**

We have had issues with the partnership between BIM360 Layout and Leica. The Layout app has bugs that often go unresolved for much too long.
