And how easy it is enable/disable the flags, change it's variations, affecting users almost instantly. We can also merge half built feature in release by surrounding it around feature flag. Then enable that flag once whole feature is developed. This is really helpful when developing large features span across multiple releases. **What do you dislike about LaunchDarkly?** New UI redesign is confusing. I prefere old ui where, variation, targetting all are visible on opening. **What problems is LaunchDarkly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Keeping features behind flag, like we enable some feature for some set of platforms and disable same feature for some set of platforms. We can enable flag on the basis of app version so it won't affect earlier version where feature was not shipped. ### 3. The backend client for Java is awesome and it already uses the streaming feature, so no need to poll LaunchDarkly for changes in FFs, it is already integrated. **What do you dislike about LaunchDarkly?** At first it was bit overwhelming all the posibilities of contexts since I was planning on using it as a kill switch, but then once one gets familiar, it is not difficult. **What problems is LaunchDarkly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Mainly it helps us with the Continuous delivery approach by having feature flags turned off in production and being able to coninuously merge to master and test the features before going forward in production without slowing down the development lifecycle. The killswitch is awesome, it allows to turn off features that otherwise we would need to ask DevOps team and a lot of bureaucracy. ### 4. We use LD for these scenarios -- the features can be defined as simple booleans or integers, or as JSON hash-values deliverying varying combinations of values in one query. This LD-based incremental approach is especially useful for transitioning "old" code to new code, say where the new code is making network calls to a new microservice, which increases both performance and complexity, especially with error management. We have successfuly mananged several such transitions with LD controls as we address tech-debt with modern, domain-based code, including increased use of varying languages across many internal microservices. That these LD controls can be partitioned by team ownership helps with cross-functional collaboration. Finally, using LD feature controls also enables stakeholders from non-Engineering treams, such as Product Managers, Customer Success, Developer Success, etc. to participate in the rollout and control of these new features, as needed. **What do you dislike about LaunchDarkly?** The downsides to using LD controls for new features is that these controls can sometimes become "permanent", in that they work for many stakeholders, but are not actually within our own product controls, and thus incur a permanent cost. These controls are also network-based, which in some circumstances adds latency to the simple act of controlling a feature. **What problems is LaunchDarkly solving and how is that benefiting you?** LD helps us transition from "old" code to new code gradually, incrementally, across multiple operating environments from the same UI. We can deploy new code, without worrying about breaking existing production through the use of LD feature flags around the new code, and then, incrementally enable and test the new features in various environments. This includes the eventual migration of processing from the old code to the new code, incrementally across customers. Having LD features owned by various teams is also a very useful feature that helps our teams manage our own feature flags. ### 5. Was confusing for me the first time around. Rules are not easily visualisable. Customer support is always there to help, my team has been on multiple calls to solve certain problems we had. We use LD for every AB test, feature flagging users and giving our users certain versions of the app. Our developers integrate LD into their code without hassle. **What do you dislike about LaunchDarkly?** There is a limit to the number of users that can be added manually through .csv which is quite important when we have to do AA test and secure that our cohorts are actually random. 50-50 split isn't really random and its quite unpredictable. It would be good for output of the split LD offers to be WHO got WHAT version but that still wouldnt solve actual randomness of the distribution. With focus on ease of implementation there are some things that are sacraficed when you want to deep dive into special features. **What problems is LaunchDarkly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Primarely we use it for AB tests where we give one version of app to certain users and other version to other users. Also we use it sometimes when we want to isolate some power users to test some features on them. It's one of our few vendors we never seem to have issues with. The feature flagging just works - the from the UI to the language specific SDKs. The API calls are fast and we rarely if ever see a failure to fetch. **What do you dislike about LaunchDarkly?** Switching between environments can be kind of clunky. It would be nice if there was a single page to manage things and the option to flip between environments, or act on multiple environments. **What problems is LaunchDarkly solving and how is that benefiting you?** LD allows us to deliver feature gated functionality into production before it's ready to go live. This allows us to stage a lot of stuff in prod without having to have multiple code paths operating in tandem. I would prefer a page with all the possible toggles and buttons to customize a flag, instead of a wizard that describes potential use cases for how to use a precreated flag. I don't trust the wizard knows how I use LD flags, nor do i fully understand what it means. For example a flag is used for "migrations" - what does that truly mean. I don't want to read through documentation assuming an abstraction. All I need to know is when it's on and when it's off and the possible configuration I can give it. The wizard assumes too much of a use case without explaining how it actually works. The latest changes to the UI also seem unnecessary and actually detract from usability a bit. For instance, you can't "find and search" for an existing value of a rule as easily anymore if any sections are collapsed. Variations should also indicate if they are not in use by any rule for easy cleanup too (or have a last used date as well). I think others at the company are not impressed by the permission granularity as well - for instance inability for developers to rename or delete a flag that they're still working on without escalating to someone with higher perms, since it's been created in "prod" even if they're testing it in our development environment. The process to do this at the moment is farily manual and involves creating a prerequisite flag alongside the experiment. Due to our custom implementation, it would be an advantage to be able to fetch the "tags" associated with the flags in the same fetch. Launch Darkly helps you reduce the risk and measure the impact of releasing features in production. We closely measure our DORA metrics, and Launch Darkly has helped us improve these, especially with Mean Time to Recovery. Before we had implemented Launch Darkly, our experimentation team had little to no autonomy when it came to changing percentages for slow rollouts. Infact, it was a long and drawnout process which involved a lot of steps and a lot of waiting between those steps.
