Instinct was founded in 2017 by an emergency veterinarian who set out to build the tools he wanted in practice. Today, we are hundreds strong and dozens of veterinarians on staff contribute to product development, clinical content, and industry partnerships. The treatment sheets aren’t just a digital version of paper, they’re where the team can see what’s due, what’s overdue and what’s coming next, place and carry out orders, document care and capture the related charges as the work happens. Having that tightly connected to the rest of the medical record makes a real difference, particularly in a busy hospital with multiple people involved in a patient’s care. I also like that Instinct has been thoughtful about reducing the cognitive load on the clinical team. The visual treatment-sheet workflow, medication and dosing safeguards, automatic charge capture, and record summaries are good examples. Those are relatively small things individually, but when they’re built into what the team uses all day, every day, they add up. The internal and external communication tools are also better than any other system I've seen. Beyond the current product, I’m super bullish on the direction Instinct is heading with AI, integrations and the broader platform. We push their team pretty hard about things we think could work better, and they engage with us in those conversations. I’ve described the relationship before as a genuine partnership, and that’s still how I view it. **What do you dislike about Instinct?** If I had to pick something, it would probably be the challenge of keeping up with how quickly Instinct evolves. They release new features and improvements regularly, and they do a good job communicating them through webinars, blog posts, updates to their online help resources, etc. The limiting factor is often on our side. In a busy hospital, it takes real effort to make sure the right people notice a change, understand whether it affects their workflow, and then actually incorporate it into how the hospital operates. There have definitely been times when we’ve realized there was functionality available that we weren’t taking full advantage of simply because WE hadn’t kept up. So it’s less a criticism of Instinct than a change-management challenge that comes with using a platform that's developing quickly. I’d still much rather have that problem than the opposite. **What problems is Instinct solving and how is that benefiting you?** One of the biggest problems Instinct has solved is fragmentation. In our previous environment, too much of the work surrounding patient care lived in separate processes, systems, paper, or simply in someone’s head. Instinct has allowed us to bring much more of the clinical workflow into one place. Treatment plans, orders, documentation, tasks, communication, etc are all right there and easy to see at a glance. It gives the team much better visibility into what’s happening with a patient and what still needs to happen. One of the more unexpected benefits has been how much more flexible that has allowed us to become with staffing. Because the information and workflow are accessible from anywhere, we’ve been able to move a meaningful amount of work that doesn’t require hands-on patient care away from the hospital floor. Remote team members can review records, manage follow-ups and task lists, help coordinate callbacks, work on records and discharges, and communicate with clients while remaining connected to the same clinical record as the people in the hospital. For us, that means less dependence on workarounds and institutional knowledge, better continuity across shifts and locations, and more flexibility in how we use the clinical team. ### 2. We also sincerely appreciate Instinct’s constant drive for improvement. Feedback we’ve shared on new products or ideas has genuinely been heard and then implemented. Their integrated software, such as ScribbleVet and Plumbs/Standards, along with the ability to link all diagnostics, has been incredibly useful for our team. **What do you dislike about Instinct?** One of our three ER hospitals also includes a small GP practice, and Instinct has had a few more challenges on the GP side of things. That said, it has been steadily improving over the years. Features like searching by Rabies Tag # or adjusting reminders were relatively “late” additions to the software; those might be considered pretty “basic” on many other platforms. Still, we’ve appreciated their willingness to take feedback and implement changes so we can serve our patients better. **What problems is Instinct solving and how is that benefiting you?** Having electronic treatment sheets has been an enormous benefit to our hospitals. With paper records, mistakes were easy to make, they were very time-consuming to create, and they often led to inaccurate charge capture. Instinct helps us keep records that are more accurate and safer for our patients, while also improving revenue for the hospital. Integrations such as ScribbleVet and Plumbs/Standards also help the entire team—from receptionists to techs to DVMs—feel supported and empowered on every case, even when they’re dealing with a drug or situation that’s new to them. ### 3. It's amazing how the software is fully integrated from the treatment sheet to invoicing, which has helped improve our workflow and efficiency tremendously. The treatment sheet features are particularly important because we often hospitalize patients for multiple days with complex treatment plans. I also find the program very intuitive, and the implementation team is amazing, making the transition smooth for us. Another plus is that it’s cloud-based, which is essential as our hospital grows and we need access from offsite. I strongly recommend Instinct with a score of 10 out of 10. **What do you dislike about Instinct?** I think the AI features in Instinct are new and can show continued improvement. I'd love more integration with the AI scribing program and potentially even summaries of the treatment sheet into the chart document. These improvements could really enhance the program. **What problems is Instinct solving and how is that benefiting you?** I find Instinct improves workflow and efficiency by integrating treatment sheets to invoicing. It supports complex treatment plans in our hospital, aiding in patient management. The cloud-based software allows access to EMR from off-site, which is vital for our growth and distributed setup. ### 4. It’s not glitchy and updates are frequent so you don’t wait for some giant update that comes once in 1 million years and takes you offline for hours. Building estimates and treatment sheets is very quick and easy and allows clients to sign or decline parts of the estimate within the software. **What do you dislike about Instinct?** Right now, from the patient’s Communications tab, I can’t message the client directly. Instead, I have to open a separate sub-window to send a message, which feels a bit silly—especially since I can email the client straight from the patient’s Communications tab. **What problems is Instinct solving and how is that benefiting you?** It really helps cut down on dosing errors because the integrated Plumb’s verifies your math for you. We do all our own calculations, but it’s nice to have that extra confirmation. It contributes to patient safety, and it also helps keep technicians on track for patient treatments because the interface is so easy to read. ### 5.
