**Reviewed by:** Chetana M. | IT support Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 13, 2026

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

What I like most about IBM Storage Ceph is its scalability and reliability. It lets organizations store large volumes of data across distributed systems while maintaining high availability and strong self-healing capabilities. I also value its software-defined architecture, which makes it easy to deploy flexibly on commodity hardware and to support object, block, and file storage within a single platform.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

One limitation of IBM Storage Ceph is that it can be complex to deploy and manage, particularly for teams that don’t have prior experience with distributed storage systems. It also tends to require substantial infrastructure planning and enough resources to run efficiently at scale, which can add to the overall operational effort.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

IBM Storage Ceph addresses the challenge of managing large-scale data reliably and cost-effectively across distributed environments. It delivers scalable, software-defined storage with built-in redundancy and self-healing capabilities.

For me, this is especially valuable because it helps keep data highly available, makes it easier to scale as my data grows, and reduces reliance on expensive proprietary storage systems. Overall, it makes my infrastructure more efficient and dependable.

  ### 2. Reliable Storage!!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amgad A. | Technology, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 18, 2022

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

RedHat Ceph storage is a very powerful external Storage that's we depend on it for all our private Cloud. It's allow use to save our NVF data with three replica so we are confident about the data available even any operational accident happened.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

There is no a real issue with Red Hat Ceph storage but due to the technology nature the Ceph cluster take some longer time to expand specially when making a large expansion with large number of OSDs.
There is an issue while upgrading from the file store to the blue store this step has to be done when doing an upgrade after release 3, this step takes so much time and has to do offload for the workload.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

Using Red Hat Ceph storage will allow you to minimise the operation cost and will save a lot of troubleshooting time.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Red Hat Ceph storage helps us to provide a reliable Cloud because of the data replication inside the Ceph storage cluster. Also the hot-swap for the OSDs so we are doing the storage operations while it's carrying a production traffic.

  ### 3. Cloud Storage at its best

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Deborah Q. | DevOps Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 04, 2023

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Ceph provides interfaces for all types of storage types.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Ceph is quite a resource intensive storage making it costly.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is providing me access to block, file and object storage. I am able to integrate with my computing system.

  ### 4. Open Source Storage Solution at it's best

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Evans A. | Data Center and Storage Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 06, 2023

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Although Ceph has featured frequently seen in other enterprise storage products, it is probably less expensive than a standard SAN. Ceph does not require the licensing fees of proprietary systems because it is an open-source solution. Moreover, it may be implemented on inexpensive, generic hardware and is not reliant on expensive, specialist hardware.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Currently, I am having challenges with the Object Gateway

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The aspect of Red Hat Ceph Storage that I found most beneficial is integration, as this is where the advantages of integration are discovered when discussing a solution made entirely of Red Hat products. Because everything comes from a single plug, Red Hat Ceph Storage, in particular, becomes a single solution for controlling the complete environment in terms of the container, the infrastructure, or the worker nodes.

  ### 5. Not an all purpose storage

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Red Hat Ceph Storage allows the host migration for VMs across the infrastructure, So its easy to replace the blade server when it crash, also the VM's volumes is replecated over the storage, which ensure the reliability of my critical service.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

What is disliked of the Red Hat Ceph storage is the operations time while making scale in/out. it takes some time specially when the operation needs to change the cluster PG num.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Red Hat Ceph allows me to easy migrate the VNFs. its easy to monitor the storage performance. Also its easy to swap the OSDs while the VNFs in production without outage time.

  ### 8. Redhat ceph storage is best for unified storage solutions

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jasmeet singh V. | Software Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 08, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

the first best thing is that it has a proper documentation to create cceph storage. It provide all the details for all 3 types of storages .
we can easily combine our sda or sd.. to create a single ceph cluster . it uses some complex algorithm which helps it to provide the best optimised storage solution.
ceph with redhat is amazing for mid scale and large organization.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

couldnt find anything to dislike, actual i start understanding ceph from redhat documentaion.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we have created a project which has driver for different on premises storages like ceph, lvm , netapp, ontapp , hp nimble so this drivers communicate with bottom layers of this storages and help us to create a storage for us .
which can be used as a block volume or in csi drivers which will allocate storages to the pods inside the kubernetes

  ### 9. Liked it very much because of high scalability and redundancy of Ceph Storage

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rachit T. | DevOps/System Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

The best thing about the Ceph storage is it is open-source. Also, helpful in high scalability and storage efficiency. It consists storage of object storage, block storage, and also distributed file storage. It meets the requirements which will be used in the future. The user interface is considered to be good as well.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Lack of knowledge for deploying the safe system Ceph storage architecture can create chaos and also harm the security of the Ceph storage architecture. Without the help of a professional person, it cannot be setup with that much efficiency. If a part of the whole system gets falsify or corrupted then it is difficult to get hold of it. The documentation has to be completed to use all scenarios which are currently not available.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

Kindly go through multiple documents for setting up Ceph storage successfully. Without any prior knowledge, you might compromise the system's security. If the storage setup is not working as expected it is better to check if any disk is corrupted and the setup is right or not. every step needs to be checked with precision.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Scalability is very much resolved which is not possible in the case of other tools. Like a disk or storage can be easily added or removed which is important in today's scenario in which downtime and uptime of storage matters a lot. Also, the best thing is the self-healing feature which Ceph storage posses as an open-source product.

  ### 10. Data analysis software

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

if a beginner was used so Lack knowledge for deploying the safe system Ceph storage

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The main idea was to share multiple iSCSI targets via multiple paths
improve Disk failure issue or Disk corruption

  ### 11. High Scalability

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** A S M Kawsar H. | Cloud Band solution expert, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Unlike gluster, it can be used for both object and block storage. It makes the life easy when it is needed to scale-in or scale-out anytime. Additionally, the 'self-healing' feature is at its best.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

It doesnt have any built-in mechanism which can identify if any Physical Disk is corrupted. Only someone who has very sound knowledge of physical devices can do it easily.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

Security and Scalability is one of the principle aspects for any Data Centers wordwide; thus, storage techs in means of Security and Scalability will normally have far-reaching consequences. Among many storage solutions these days is CEPH, which acts as a viable solution when it comes to migrate your Data Center securely. Her awe-inspiring features, such as being the speedstar of scalability and healing, makes her the front runner.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is really safe to replace the corrupted physical disks anytime. During the migration for grameenphone, there was ZERO storage downtime, Although mapping took some time.

  ### 12. Good configuration capabilities and quite stable

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 08, 2020

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

I prefere a connector for storage in vmware and hyper-v environment, not iscsi. We want a scalable architecture in building block. Before we have to plan storage investment and we aren’t able to be efficient and faster than business need. The configuration of the solution and the user interface are both quite good

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

The management features are pretty good, but they still have room for improvement

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

We use the on-premises deployment model.I'd rate the solution seven out of ten as it had some limitations when it comes to disk I/O .

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're definitely seeing cost savings since we've implemented it.
We should have used the solution a long time ago as it appears to cost the business less money to run some of our data systems using it. .

  ### 13. Highly redundant storage

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Its highly redundant system, even if we have harddrives OSDs down, storage node down , it keeps on running with same performance. Once its back up, the OSds rebalance itself.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

A little complex, dont have everything on clicks. Need to learn the technology and then play with it.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

Its one of the most advance storage system that is resilient and has good performance.i would suggest to go for it.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using some high performance computes to do most of the telco tasks , for which backend storage is Ceph. It provides clusters of large storages.

  ### 14. The last storage you will ever wear

  ### 16. The best storage system if and only if you are tied to On Prem Storage

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 04, 2019

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

Ceph is an enterprise grade open source storage technology. What I like best is it is a self healing designed group up to be highly available vs an after thought. I love that one storage technology can offer object/block/file and I don't have to have multiple vendors for each type. Opensource is the method to the future and I believe IF you MUST adopt an on prem storage Ceph is great.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

What I dislike is not specific to Ceph but specific to all on prem management. I believe the future in technology is going to be in the cloud. And management of even a mature technology like Ceph is not as attractive as adopting a fully managed storage platform in the cloud.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have recently not solved much with Ceph.
Disk failure in Ceph is a real problem and can cause some amount of annoyance but with Ceph the failover to other disks is very seamless making is an painless as possible.

  ### 17. Pretty good solution if you have enough upscale engineers

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 28, 2019

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

There are some awesome concepts in the CEPH foundataion:
* scalability
* flexibility
* linear growth

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

* Unfortunately, it is immature technology, however, it's growing rapidly.
* If your engineers have not enough knowledge about CEPH, they can occasionally destroy it.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were creating SDS as product based on CEPH. The main idea was to share multiple iSCSI targets via multiple paths. It was production ready solution with real customers, as a result we made hundreds of CEPH clusters(0.87-12.2) and collected immense amount of experience in that. Let me share some examples:
* If you have time difference more then 30m, a CEPH cluster will stuck.
* If you change time back(1 ms is enough), a CEPH cluster will be crashed.
* Nobody checks crushmap instead of you. You have to understand what are you doing & how it is affecting a cluster.
* You can face tons of problems if you use not standard cluster name. i.e. after mounting images are presented in system using image name & pool name, it might be the same in another cluster, you will problem in that case.
* Before 12.2 ceph S3 implementation was extrimly immature.
* OSDs start via udev trigger, the interesting thing that you might face situation that there is no network at this time.
* Import-diff allows you to import a delta from another image. As a result you can lose data.
* It has not optimal recovery mechanism, as a result you face stucking on clients systems during recover.

  ### 18. Flexibility to build a unified SDS foundation that fits all our needs.

**What do you like best about IBM Storage Ceph?**

The flexibility to deliver object storage, block storage and file system storage as well as it's scalability and availability are it's strongest features. You can choose how tolerant to drive, nodes or even rack failures the system will be.

**What do you dislike about IBM Storage Ceph?**

It is not for beginners. So you whether get your team trained or you'd have to get help from a partner.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Storage Ceph:**

Follow Ceph recommended hardware.

**What problems is IBM Storage Ceph solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're building a storage for our video workflow and for our private cloud. Ceph has all the features we need without any vendor lock-in.
