  ### 12. Great MPP Data Warehouse Appliance

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Gambling & Casinos | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2016

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

I like that Netezza is an old player in the DW world. They were one of the first to come out with a commercially available Data Warehouse Appliance. They've also made great improvements along the way. The sheer processing power of the appliance makes most jobs run without any issues. The analytic functions provided have also proven to be very useful. It is also easy to set up a distribution key so you know how the data is being sharded across all the nodes. Another thing I like are the CLI tools. NZLOAD for example has been an integral part of our near real time load process. NZMIGRATE has proven to be a great database copy tool. I could go on, but there are definitely some great tools included with this product. I would recommend to at least speak with an IBM representative to see if this Appliance is right for you.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Sometimes the SQL language Netezza uses (it's a PostreSQL variant) can get a little annoying. But if you're used to PostreSQL you can certainly get up and running.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

Knit a tight relationship with IBM Netezza support. They've been really helpful in proposing solutions and upgrades.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Most of the data that sits on our Netezza Appliance is an Operational Data Store that feeds Data Marts for our Marketing department. The end users then use Cognos to consume the data. This has proven to be a good solution. They're able to access their data quickly and in an efficient manner.

Extremely fast is designed properly, even with terabytes of data. You will never go back to oracle or any traditional db's once using netezza

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

SQL toolkit functions is not extensive like Oracle and not many parellel processes allowed

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

handles huge volumes of data very quickly

  ### 16. An HPC appliance for a full stack database

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hossein S. | Research Assistant, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 11, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

I was introduced to Netezza in a research project in Dalhousie university a couple of months ago. Since then, I believe Netezza is definitely one of the best machines for big data analytics. Having well designed HPC techniques in any single part, I found it well tuned, fast and easy to use. There are some good and free client applications available to manage the server and run scripts.
One thing which is amazing is its built-in DBA that work as a 24-7 support team.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Unlike its well written official documents, there are almost no active user community on Netezza topics. Having said that, it is sometimes very tough to find a solution to an obvious question. I checked only three different client management tools to work with it. They shared one thing in common that is all of them provide something that the other two doesn't provide. This results to have all of them and work on different client tools to have everything done. In addition, the official IBM client that comes with Netezza can be said to be the worst of them.
In addition, lack of demos or tutorials on very common problems is another issue that I think should be added to Netezza official document.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

Having an intelligent built-in DBA, you don't need to employ a lot of DBAs! If you can afford it, it's a good choice.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I started to work with Netezza in a research project in Dalhousie University. Because of confidentiality I can't talk about the details but in a nutshell, there was a human and AIS trajectory mining project on huge datasets in which we used Netezza.

  ### 18. Very fast if you follow the best practices and understand the architecture

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The MPP (Massively Parallel Processing) architecture is very strong feature of this appliance which helps in running ugly time consuming warehouse report queries very fast - These would have taken forever to run on other RDBMS databases. The key is the fact that most of the unwanted data is filtered (projection and restriction) as close to the disk as possible. Standard SQL queries can be used with the appliance which makes it easier for porting existing applications and avoid a new learning curve in that front.

If the best practices are followed in terms of distribution keys, data-types etc. you can get real good performance boost.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Since this is an appliance, it has many hardware components inside and we have experienced lots of sporadic hardware failures - we are then at the mercy of IBM to replace them (Scheduling, webX, field Engg) which really reflects on the SLA. Many companies have complained about the Moose disks (bad batch of disks) which had to be completely replaced. For small shops this could be really inconvenient.

There aren't enough active user community for Netezza and so it gets very difficult sometimes. You again would need to open a ticket with IBM and get understanding of what it is (eg - SEU single bit vs Multi bit error) and get some documentation on the issues.

Also dislike the fact that the catalog backup pauses the system. (Understand that the catalog is in the host file system) But if IBM can allow a hot catalog backup, that would be very useful.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Netezza primarily for doing analytic's - this is used for doing market research and running campaigns using various tools.

  ### 19. Impressively fast data warehousing appliance

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ramakant S. | Data Warehouse Specialist, Consumer Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Lightning fast performance even with half of Terra byte Size of Tables
Very fast loading and offloading of Data
Faster Backup and restore

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Keys are not enforced
Small bugs. i.e. Different SPU may have different system Time resulting into different time stamps while loading data into tables or in similar use cases
Database generated surrogate keys are not in Order - although it doesn't matter much
Slow Updates
Costly
Lack of maturity observed at some occasions where it went down due to silly reasons- i.e Query getting queued up

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

It is costly but worth it. You may ignore few flaws of MPP architecture once you get the benifits of performance. Also teh administration is easy. Say, most of the things are handled by IBM support team.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Business take:
Using as data-warehouse for reporting and analytics purpose. Needed Nightly Batch load to finish quicker and making the data ready for Business use as soon as possible across different timezones

Benefits:
The Nightly Load has drastically reduced
Reporting layer became faster
Able to throw Complex Algorithm to Database

  ### 20. Performance beast as long as you KISS it

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Milind O. | VP of Data Warehousing / BI, Financial Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The hardware platform approach surely is the core processing power behind Netezza. The ability to run standard SQL queries is a huge plus as this helps development and eliminates yet another language learning curve. With multi server architecture the performance improvements are easily realized.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The performance of the system seems to break down with implementation of views, especially layers of views. The appliance is designed around table joins and so I think its best to avoid views or at least keep them non nested. That means creating more tables and more ETL. Any table once organized and distributed on particular set of columns only those queries will see advantage, so if you have a huge variety of queries against that table then not all of them will see improvements. Another pain was disk failures and the fact that IBM certified technician has to come to replace the disks every time. I was just surprised by the rate of failures!

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

Definitely stay away from creating views especially nested views, do more ETL and load more tables!

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were migrating an overnight batch system that took hours to produce reports onto a faster more robust platform. The entire process was now much faster and data capture and data consumption were granular and we had several batch running constantly , thus resulting in reports reflecting data within minutes rather than next day

  ### 21. At Nielsen, we use Netezza as our primary reporting DB.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sumughan (Sumu) A. | Senior Manager - Data Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 12, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

High through put. On the fly fact calculation is very robust and returns data on huge amounts of data quickly. This helps us create and report facts directly from dis-aggregated data on the fly.

We are handling heavy volume of transaction data and pre-aggregating the facts would be prohibitively costly and almost impossible to do. Having the capability to do mass data operations on the fly is very helpful for our organization.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The max size a Netezza box can handle is pre-determined by the configuration. Meaning, it is not infinitely scalable.

Cost of the servers are too big for a small size firm.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

This is a good selection if you are looking to process huge volumes of data on the fly.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

On the fly fact calculation using dis-aggregated data. We have 1000's of facts and many dimensions at various levels of hierarchies. It is impossible for us to pre-calculate the fact values like a regular DW. So, we use Netezza to calculate the fact values on the fly and use a virtual OLAP env.

  ### 22. I am working with this appliance from last 4 years and its amazing

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

If you are looking for database with high storage and parallely high performance then Netezza is best for that . Netezza is usefull for data warehouse appliances and advanced analytics applications for uses including enterprise data warehousing, business intelligence, predictive analytics and business continuity planning.

Quick Technical Support Team of IBM

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

You need to know better and best way to design your database . How to use organize key and distribution key to make it better and best . There is nothing in it to dislike it . One suggestion i want to give to IBM Team that make NZadmin more better than other ....

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

Yes

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to find out better Marketing and sales strategy . So netezza play a key role in that . We use netezza fpr several ways like , reporting purpose and statistical purpose . Now we are looking to make connectivity with Hadoop
We are working on that

  ### 23. Robust MPP in BI/DW Space

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Not having too much experience with other BI/DW solutions, I like that the administration of the appliance is so simple. From a design perspective, I like that there is careful consideration in obfuscating the physical and logical elements of the appliance.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

My oganization has invested millions in the procurement of Netezza appliances when Netezza was its own company. Not to put IBM at fault here but with security being a mainstream focus, I was not thrilled to the idea of any organization acquiring new hardware to benefit from hardware encryption. Personally, I think there should be some legacy support to not only have a softwrae based encryption solution.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The "synergy between the logical and physical" aspects of the appliance make it a real pleasure to fine tune BI quries and see the improvement in real-time. Our BI queries run so much faster than when ran on a traditional OLTP transactional database.

  ### 24. Raw speed opens up new possibilities for dev & testing, but lack of flexibility can cause problems

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John H. | Associate Director - Enterprise Data Warehouse, Financial Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 10, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The raw speed of the system allows for a development process not typically undertaken. For example, it's possible to run full performance testing as you unit test. You can also create tables that are much larger than you would make in a typical database (eg storing current and archive rows in the same tables).

The simplicity of the system allows for minimal maintenance. DBA involvement can be next to zero.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

The simplicity of the system can also cause issues in mixed use cases.

In other databases, you also have the ability to improve performance by multiple means, such as partitioning, indexing, allocating server hardware, etc. Netezza essentially has only two ways--as far as physical architecture goes--to handle performance: sorting data and distributing data.

Sorting data is done directly in the table, avoiding the need for clustered indexes. But that's only helpful if the query you run utilizes that sort. For instance, if you sort on date by making the Date field the ORGANIZE BY key, any query that doesn't utilize Date in the WHERE clause will have to tablescan. You can create materialized views that essentially act like indexes, but you can't use both MVs and ORGANIZE BY keys. In other words, if you use even one MV to sort, you can't force-sort the data in the table unless you actually reload the data with an ORDER BY clause in the INSERT statement. The problem with the MVs is that even though they act like an index, you have to refresh them like a typical MV in order to sort any new data. In a system that is loaded or updated intraday, that can cause problems.

Distribution has two components that can sometimes be at odds with each other: evenly hashing the data to share workload and colocating data for joins. But if the column that makes sense to distribute on for colocation purposes doesn't evenly distribute the data, you will be forced to make a compromise on one for the sake of the other.

Furthermore, in a star schema, you can colocate the fact table's foreign key with a dimension's primary key, but that is best used if you query with a parameter on that dimension in the WHERE clause. If you run a query that can't filter on that dimension, the distribution key might not help you. Also, you can only ever pick one dimension to colocate with the fact. Choosing a multi-column distribution of the fact based on multiple dimension keys does not colocate the fact with _each_ dimension. It instead distributes the fact with a hash key based on the concatenated combination of the values of the multi-column distribution key (ie the fact will not be colocated with _any_ dimension).

Also, the fact that Netezza has not come out with in-memory or columnar options makes me wonder if the architecture of the appliance even allows for such possibilities. In other words, the lack of flexibility might be cropping up again if the nature of the appliance doesn't allow for such varied functionality.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

If you can design a system that makes sure to take advantage of Netezza's strengths, then I'd say buy it. But keep in mind that the lack of flexibility of the system means you might lack flexibility in your design in the future.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used Netezza to perform in-database transformation processes in near-real time while simultaneously allowing user queries. The lack of traditional locking for WRITE/READ combinations allows this to work quite well.

  ### 25. Great Engineering machine for DW

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonghun L. | Database Administrator, Apparel & Fashion, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2015

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

First of all, Netezza requires minimum DBA administration. It means it can maintain with less sys and dba resources.
Second, it has nothing share disk resource nothing like Oracle shared storage. It has own architecture and algorithm to move data. And it is not using index at all. So called "Zone mapping" it help a lot for heavy query from the BI users.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Our company Netezza was not actually built for real time replication. I have to spend a lot of time to fix this issue so called CDC.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

I recommend this machine to any BI system for DW.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Netezza is built for DW. And it can be used bulk load. It compared to Oracle and MS DB. It reduced the time to load the data compare to both DBs. Great machine for DW.

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

This is a great data warehouse appliance if you want to keep things simple and solve data problems that require scale.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Too many hardware outages (albeit hot swappable) causing constant request to IBM support.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

It is certainly a platform to consider if the volume of data processing is very large (hundreds of millions of rows and beyond)

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used Netezza to address a problem that needed to load and process several hundred million new rows a week. Additionally, the analytical process needed multi-phased consolidation of all the data (totaling several billion rows). Netezza not only simplified the whole process but it could handle what took several months of processing down to a few hours.

  ### 27. Awesome for Data Warehouse. Has its' own quirks. On the whole a thumbs up.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Blazingly fast for Queries.
Very little maintenance, hence needs minimal support from DBA.

**What do you dislike about IBM Netezza Performance Server?**

Concurrency - performance dips with number of concurrent queries. If more than 48 queries concurrently, it ques up.
Scalability - If your data increases, you need to go for a bigger appliance. Cannot add incrementally
Backup and Replication :-(
Some kinds of Correlated Queries not supported

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Netezza Performance Server:**

Have a strong Technical Team who understands Netezza. We learnt it the hard way. Netezza is awesome for some problems, average for some and sucks out right for some.

**What problems is IBM Netezza Performance Server solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using it for the Enterprise Data Warehouse. Currently servicing Finance, Store Operations and Supply Chain groups using only one appliance. Queries (Reports) are faster, this has its own problem(s). Users want more complicated reports.
Business Problems Solved: Allocation, Planning, Store Operations, Inventory Control, Sales Forecasting etc.
Benefits: Business Users can simulate complex models rapidly.
