Really intelligent staff who are patient when you need help to get things moving again. Lastly, the consistency of the backups is a great bonus, we rarely have issues and most times it isn't an issue with the software, more a problem with the machine the software is on. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** One gripe I have with the VM backup is I wish the control panel portal were a little easier to navigate. An example of a negative is we can't schedule offsite backups without first performing a local backup. That may initially seem illogical, but offsite backups sometimes fail, so it would be great to schedule additional offsite backups to reduce the chances of running those manually the next day. Also, offsite backup jobs regularly fail and don't resume/retry. Our previous solution could resume an offsite backup even if the Internet connection was lost for hours/days. It just continued where it left off, which is helpful with sizeable offsite backups. Lastly, we have concerns about the reliability of the offsite server in general, especially when 50+ servers are backed up to the same offsite server. Support checked the logs when we submitted a ticket and confirmed underlying network issues, but all other systems were working correctly on the same networks. So, we excluded the offsite backup server by directly connecting to the same SMB shares that the offsite server was configured to use, and the backups were then reliable. You can, for example, set up a backup to Wasabi or AWS storage, and an additional backup to a separate MSP-managed colo hypervisor with HornetSecurity Offsite Backup running on it--so that if needed, you can spin up the most recent backup of a server on your own MSP hypervisor for recovery or testing purposes. I also appreciate the Hornet Backup support team--they are easy to contact and always helpful. They are a model for how this sort of thing should be done. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** The downside is the HornetSecurity portal got a bit more difficult to use after the product transitioned from being Altaro to Hornet Security VM Backup. Some of the UI and navigation choices needed to get to the HornetSecurity Backup console are non-intuitive. But the VM Backup interface itself is clear and works well. Additionally there are rare deduplication issues that require a reseeding of the backup, but in general the platform has been very stable in my seven years of working with it. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** This solves my need to have a cost-effective cloud backup solution that doesn't require a lot of time to maintain the health of. It also delivers this service securely and with any/all CIS encryption requirements. There have been occassions where the VM doesn't boot up for a variety of reasons. I then look to my backups to resolve this issue. However Hornet has been backing up the VM in a non bootable state. And this is only brought to light when the VM needs a reboot. We had a client whose building had burnt to the ground, we were able to use the "Boot from backup" function to have them back online within 3hrs. Altaro truly made us a hero in the legal community when the story got out. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** We love Altaro as our backup software but the one flaw I have run into a few times over the years is if your backup database gets corrupt tech support will advise you to start from scratch. I normally have servers that don't contain changing data set to 2-week retention and data servers for 1 year or longer if needed. It made us realise how much we needed it. Support was also very helpful and continues to be helpful. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** None that I can think of off the top of my head, Altaro has provided a fantastic backup solution to us and so far has continued to support us in different ways. **Recommendations to others considering Hornetsecurity VM Backup:** The sales people at Altaro will always be honest and open with you, so just chat with them about your requirements and they will see you through the rest. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed a backup solution that was easy to monitor when I wasn't in the office and altaro has provided exactly that, we get notifications when our backups have been completed. It's one thing to do backups, but it's another to restore data confidently. In a VM environment, it's essential to be able to manage backup and restore jobs quickly. Altaro lets us do granular restors as well as full VM restores. We can even restore a VM and test it offline. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** On occasion, a single backup or a dozen or more backups may fail. Restarting the Services or unplugging and restarting our USB drive enclosures generally corrects the issues. At other times, I may have to initiate a backup job multiple times before it backs up. These account for a small number of the overall number of backups made. I also absolutely hate that the session times out after about 20 minutes of non-use. I am in the Altaro application throughout the day, and it is inconvenient to have to continually log back into the application. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are able to manage backups and restores with minimal staff. I can't tell whether the off-site backup was a success for off-site server or cloud storage. It's as easy as 1 2 3 .. 4 because of the off-site side of things. I like it that the setup does not force you to install additional [microsoft] packages. It's just next next next finish and straight to configuration. Lov'ít. And after setup and configuration the management interface is very logically, you have aquainted yourself with it during configuration. Which Host should be backed up? Which VM's of that Host should be backed up, Where to should it be backed up. When? Done! **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** The only thing I dislike is that they made it more secure :D let me explain. It used to be that the folder structure on the backup volume was easily, in human readable form, to follow.You could copy the corresponding VHD to where you wanted it. Nowadays it is more obscure. To be honest we never need to use it, only once it the 10 or so odd years we have been using Altaro. I never asked support about it because we're happy with the product. As requested feature I would like a more ways, global kind, of cleaning up the backup location, a feature like "clean up all backups before yesterday", or "clean up all backups before last week" It is there, but per VM. That feature would be potentially harmfull, but so nice to have. All in all there is not much we dislike. **Recommendations to others considering Hornetsecurity VM Backup:** It is easy to rollout, one setup, and straight to customer specific config, which is a breeze. It has a nice Overview dashboard, can use several ways to notify. Oh and the last backup is the full backup [reverse delta] Compression is good. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** We solved the problem of having to buy a license for more machines than we need. And we can do the billing now per vm and per month. ### 28. The deduplication feature really saves storage space on incremental backups. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** I had an issue performing updates on a couple servers but that was resolved with help by tech support. The creation and setup of backup templates that can apply to all installations and customers saves time and allows the MSP to set a standard backup practice easily and quickly after installation.
