What stands out most is how fast and flexible querying is, even against high cardinality data we can slice and dice by any field (user ID, request ID, custom attributes) without needing to predefine dashboards or metrics ahead of time. This has made debugging production issues dramatically faster, since we can trace a single problematic request end-to-end instead of guessing from aggregated metrics. The BubbleUp feature is especially useful for quickly surfacing what's different about a slow or failing subset of requests compared to the rest of traffic. It's also made our on-call experience much less stressful, since we can investigate incidents in real time with actual context instead of jumping between multiple tools. The learning curve can be steep for teams new to observability-driven debugging, since it requires a shift in mindset from traditional dashboards and predefined metrics toward ad-hoc, high-cardinality querying. Instrumenting our codebase properly to get rich, structured events took real upfront effort, and getting the most value out of the platform depends heavily on how well events are tagged and enriched at the source. Pricing can also become a consideration as event volume grows, particularly for larger or high-traffic services. Additionally, some newer team members find the query interface less intuitive at first compared to more traditional metrics dashboards, so onboarding takes a bit of ramp-up time. Before adopting Honeycomb, our team struggled to debug production incidents quickly because our monitoring stack relied on pre-aggregated metrics and dashboards that couldn't answer unexpected questions in the moment. When something went wrong, we often had to guess which dimension to investigate, then wait on new dashboards or logs to confirm it which slowed down incident response significantly. Honeycomb solved this by letting us query raw, high-cardinality event data on the fly, so we can trace individual requests end-to-end, and pinpoint exactly which users, endpoints, or conditions are affected without needing to predict the question in advance. This has measurably reduced our mean time to resolution during incidents, since engineers can go from "something's wrong" to "here's the exact root cause" in minutes instead of hours. It ties up different open telemetry and other tooling, making integration easier. They have integrations with other technologies, such as Enbridge for user or synthetic monitoring, which makes it easily expandable, especially with OpenTelemetry being universal. Having a more friendlier pricing and, especially that OpenTelemetry is basically open source or free. I find Honeycomb particularly valuable for its ease of searching capabilities. Once familiar with the application, I can leverage its full potential and making my tasks much simpler and more efficient. The visual graphics are another aspect I truly enjoy; they are instrumental when I need to analyze maximum or average task completion times and assess potential delays in our services. The ease of initial setup was surprisingly convenient, simplifying my integration process with existing operations. As a product Honeycomb is excellent, the ability to look across all of our data in such an efficient and useful way has been revoloutionary for our approach to understanding our production systems. The customer support has been exceptional, and we have a lot of confidence in the Honeycomb employees who have given us advice as well as the documentation which they make available to lead you into a successful implementation of OpenTelemetry.
