**What do you like best about Hex?**

- The core value prop: Able to write SQL / Python in the same notebook and generate local variables from external data sources / queries.
- Navigation is awesome
- Able to create externally-facing applications and visuals for use by other business users.
- The AI isn't terrible.

I use this every day. The team uses this every day. Good tool, powerful tool.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

- Data refreshes hard to understand, especially in the context of compute power, spend, etc. Feel like in some ways it's forcing refreshes / re-runs too often, driving increased spend for no reason.
- Cached data sometimes creates hallucinations.
- Inability to reference external data connections with in-notebook variables simultaneously.
- Little bit non-intuitive for charts in terms of config.
- Some bugs, e.g. take over session from someone sometimes get locked up.
- Autocomplete isn't super robust.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps abstract big data out of unmanageable spreadsheets by creating centralized work queues and reports that are accessible in the cloud.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Cloud notebook: Hex is a great improvement upon an open-source cloud data notebook solution like Jupyter Lab, because it takes care of all of the DevOps in the background, has a solid role-based data access functionality, supports flexibly switching between SQL and Python code when working with the same data frame. 
DWH Connection: Snowflake connection works like a charm and allows to quickly check the schemas and metadata of every DWH table
Dashboards: Adding user inputs and making dashboards is a breeze. Data viz and dashboarding flexibility is better than in Databricks. 
AI: And on top of it, it's built-in AI functionality helps write analytical code much faster.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

- It does not have a robust folder structure, only single-level "Collections", which means that in a larger organization, information organization will be a problem.
- Instead of integrating with Github, it implements it own version control system which is not super transparent to use

I really like how Hex allows me to get engineering efficiency data without having to write SQL, making me more effective in getting the data. I also appreciate the ability to publish apps, which lets other people see my research.

The transition from notebook to app is not perfect. It's hard to organize blocks and move them around.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I really appreciate Hex for its simplicity and high level of customization, which makes it stand out from other complex and expensive tools like Tableau. The integration process with Hex was incredibly easy and went smoothly, enhancing its usability right from the start. It serves excellently as a reporting tool living on top of our data warehouse, providing us with robust capabilities to visualize and automate SQL queries, which can be easily shared with stakeholders. I find the workbooks in Hex to be extremely user-friendly and versatile, supporting transitions from SQL to Python effortlessly, which allows for reusing larger and more expensive queries by converting them into dataframes. These features make Hex much more sophisticated than typical business intelligence software, improving our workflow significantly. Additionally, Hex integrates well with Big Query, which is a critical aspect of our data management. Overall, Hex reflects a sophistication in design, capability, and functionality that keeps me satisfied and willing to continue using it.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I would like to see improvements in R integrations.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find Hex simplifies reporting by serving as a tool on top of our data, visualizing and automating SQL queries for stakeholders. It's user-friendly, customizable, and integrates easily with our data warehouse, outshining more complex and expensive BI tools like Tableau.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I like the design of the Hex product, which makes the interaction visually pleasing and intuitive. Additionally, the data loading performance is excellent, allowing for quick analysis without delays. The initial setup of Hex was very fast and easy, facilitated by the notebook view, which made the transition and adaptation to the system super smooth. The advanced technology of Hex was one of the main reasons for replacing PowerBI, which shows its superiority in features and innovation.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I believe that the integrations could be improved, especially those related to Google. It would be beneficial to have direct connections with Google's APIs.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Hex’s most significant accomplishment is its ability to democratize data analysis. It’s incredibly easy to use, with a clean and intuitive interface that makes it a pleasure to work in. The platform allows anyone in our organization who is comfortable with SQL, Python, or R to connect to our data, perform their own analysis, and share their findings. This has all but deprecated our old, rigid BI reporting processes. Reporting was a bottleneck. It required highly technical, tool-specific knowledge that few people possessed. Now a much larger portion of the company can build reports and data apps.

The collaborative nature of Hex is a core strength. We can easily share notebooks with colleagues, work together in real time, and leave comments, fostering a truly collaborative data culture. The ability to take a completed analysis and publish it as a light-weight, interactive data app is a feature we rely on daily. These apps allow non-technical users across the organization to filter, explore, and interact with the data directly, without needing to understand the underlying code. This has empowered every department to be more data-driven in their decision-making.

Finally, the platform feels forward-thinking and modern. The AI-native features, particularly "Hex magic," are great, helping us to be more efficient and productive with our work.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

While we are overwhelmingly positive about Hex, there are a few areas where we believe the platform could grow. The primary challenge we face is organization, both within individual notebooks and across our entire body of work. As our content has grown, it’s become easy to get lost in a sea of notebooks. While the tag-based system helps, it requires a level of intentionality from every user that is difficult to enforce at scale. A more robust, folder-like structure would be a welcome addition to help us better organize projects and departments.

We appreciate the existing Git integration for backing up notebooks, but we would love to see a more integrated workspace system that could mirror a Git repository's structure. This would provide a more scalable and familiar way for technical users to manage version control and project organization, ultimately making it easier to maintain a clean and structured environment for everyone.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As our organization grew, we struggled with a classic problem: traditional Business Intelligence (BI) reporting was a bottleneck. It required highly technical, tool-specific knowledge that few people possessed, creating a huge chasm between our data and the teams who needed it. Hex has not only solved this problem but has completely transformed how we work with data.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I like Hex because it's powerful for data analysis. I appreciate being able to create dashboards that show data based on user emails, allowing customization for each user. It solves the problem of having to rely on engineering since I can build what I need myself. I love that I can do more than just dashboards, including coding and using AI, which offers fantastic possibilities.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I would use Hex fully if it were simple to create dashboards, as simple as Metabase for example.

I use Hex to build solutions independently without needing engineering. It allows me to create dashboards based on user data, code, and use AI, offering powerful possibilities beyond basic BI platforms.

Flexibility and customization are strong points, and the analytics are powerful. I also appreciate the AI features, MCP, and the available integrations.

It can be slow at times, and the interface and information architecture feel a bit complex to navigate, especially when I’m trying to figure out when to use projects versus threads versus explorations.

Hex masterfully combines the capabilities of a top-tier BI tool, a SQL editor, and a Python notebook into a user-friendly yet robust platform. The latest AI agent features are truly impressive and are evolving quickly. As long as you grant Hex adequate access to your data model, you can significantly enhance your analytic abilities - some might even say it’s like gaining access to a highly efficient data analyst.

Occasionally, there are intermittent service disruptions. Additionally, navigating within notebooks could be improved, as it's easy to get lost and end up scrolling through long sequences of cells. While some navigational features have been introduced, it would be helpful if drag-and-drop functionality were expanded to allow moving cells more easily within a notebook.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Hex has an intuitive interface which allows you to learn and do more things than you thought you could. It also has an AI assistant that is very helpful when a mistake is made on your code or you forget about something, making it easier to work and do your day-by-day tasks. It also has an easy way to integrate with the databases, making it easier to consult the datawarehouse.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

It could be more dynamic when it comes to the design of dashboards. Sometimes I feel like I need the freedom to be more creative and the things that I have to work with are not quite what I am looking for. They are great, but limited creatively.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As an analytics engineer, I have to deal with a huge amount of data and analyze it. The way Hex shows me the data that I'm handling and how it helps me with insights while I'm doing my queries is what makes the tools so powerful and easy to work with.

Hex has an intuitive, user-friendly interface combined with the flexibility to switch effortlessly between SQL and Python. With Hex, I can quickly prototype queries in SQL to explore and aggregate data, then pivot to Python for more advanced transformations, data cleaning, or machine-learning workflows, all without leaving the same environment.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

What I find limiting about Hex is its predominantly linear dashboard layout, which can make it challenging to present data in the most impactful way for stakeholders. Because elements are arranged top-to-bottom, it’s harder to create more flexible, grid-based or story-driven layouts that guide viewers through key insights.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hex tackles two big pain points for me, slow dashboard builds and juggling multiple tools. With Hex, I can spin up analytics dashboards in minutes and run Python code right alongside SQL, so I get interactive visuals and deep data analysis all in one place. That saves me time, keeps my work focused, and helps me deliver insights to stakeholders faster.

I find Hex really user-friendly. I like the seamless connection to BigQuery, which makes integrating data from Databricks or BigQuery easy. I also appreciate the write-back function capability. The setup was pretty seamless, thanks to the support team at Hex, which ensures integration with us is smooth.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I think one of the features that I would like to see Hex enhancing is the machine learning capability. For example, model registry, experiment feature store, and all these kinds of essential features for machine learning.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I’ve been exploring Hex for over two weeks now, and it’s been full of great surprises. From importing data to using the SQL editor, Python, and chained SQL, to create charts the whole process has been smooth and easy to use.
I tried out Magic, and it’s by far the best technical AI assistance I’ve experienced — the results were about 95% accurate. Complex KPIs, period calculations, parameter handling, and input integration in SQL were solved without me having to write a single formula by myself. It was all Magic.
Publishing reports, managing versions through Git, or downloading them is very straightforward. Role-based access is also simple and clear.
Giving suggestions for project descriptions, project name, chart name, it was all magic to do magic. 
One of my favorite features is Components — it makes building and reusing visuals incredibly efficient.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

One thing I’d love to see improved in Hex is having more chart options. Sometimes, the available visuals feel a bit limited, and having more variety would really help in presenting data in the best way.
Also, when it comes to tables and pivots, it would be great to have more control over formatting — like being able to bold or italicize text, add color to titles, and customize the look of subtotals and row level totals. I’d also love to see dynamic title changes based on parameters; it would make dashboards feel much more interactive and polished.
Another big one for me is the ability to change X-axis values dynamically in charts. That would give a lot more flexibility when working with different datasets or time ranges.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a BI developer, one of the biggest challenges I often face is the slow rendering of reports when working with large datasets — and Hex has done a great job solving that. The option to switch between dataframe mode and query mode gives a lot of flexibility depending on the use case, which really helps with performance.
Another major win is how much time Magic saves. We usually spend a lot of time writing complex KPI calculations and handling parameters manually — but Magic takes care of most of that. The combination of the SQL editor with Magic is one of the best development experiences I’ve had.
I also really like how chained SQL works in Hex. It gives me the freedom to create charts, pivot tables, text blocks, and more directly from the queries — which makes the whole workflow smoother and more efficient.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I love that Hex allows me to perform all my data analysis tasks in one place by combining SQL and Python, which previously required switching between different tools. I appreciate the seamless setup experience, and the ability to run scheduled tasks and publish work has been incredibly useful. The feature of using a separate cloud space ensures that changes made by others do not affect my work, which I find very beneficial. The addition of the semantic layer is exciting, and I'm looking forward to leveraging this new feature.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I don't find Hex as efficient in dashboarding compared to other tools like Tableau. The dashboarding capabilities within Hex are quite limited and complex to use.

I find Hex consolidates SQL and Python analysis into one platform, streamlining my workflow and eliminating the need to switch between tools.

I like the fact that you can combine SQL and Python and allows to make some data ingestions easy. 

Also the fact that everything is so intuitive and the design is pretty makes it more desireble to use.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

It's complicated to share with stakeholders to just see.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my case, I like the fact that I do not have to create new tables in Snowflake and I just can replaced them by a scheduled run and then do all analysis in Hex combining SQL and Python.

Also, allows an easy and better visualization than Looker and downloading the data and scheduling data sents is easier.

There are very little resources online on how to start with Hex. The App builder could be improved as it is very limited in options. It would be nice to have a possibility to build a proper add based on the code and to even create simple dashboards and visuals.

Hex solves a few problems. I use it as an orchestration tool for ELTs. It provides daily slack updates through scheduled python scripting. Lastly, I use it for general reporting and BI analysis.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I love that you're able to toggle between SQL and Python Cells. You're able to add documentation to dashboards with text fields. The interface is visually attractive. The sharing capabilities are amazing and flexible.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Visualization options could be more nimble and point and click. It's not the friendliest UI for those who just want to do a quick data dive. The dashboard editor does not allow you to add a cell in between sections - it automatically adds to the bottom of the tab. Data needs to be refreshed manually to update data, which can take a while and often requires re-publishing. Sometimes data is downloaded in different formats - e.g., we download a CSV and numbers are in text format so we have to change each column to numbers manually. It would be awesome if there was an excel download option.

The ability to set up data exports as CSV or excel files would be great. Setting timezones can be buggy. Refreshing data can be really slow based on how the data is pulled in.  Ability to easily ‘double click’ - select a row on one table and have that filter another table or click on a bar in a chart and get the raw data in another table - Tableau style would be awesome. Would be awesome to have ability to turn off automatic filtering on field name across tables.

Making changes across multiple dashboards is very manual, even when we use a template. It would be helpful to be able to programmatically make changes across multiple dashboards.

We are using Hex primarily for its ease of sharing with those outside our organization. We also love how easy it is to integrate into various data sources.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Easy to share different levels of detail in a complete package - and the seamless integration between SQL and Python is so great. It makes exploring our database much easier for people less familiar with its structure.

It can be slower than a local python platform, where we still have to run some larger data analysis models.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hex has solved a few things - sharing and collaborating on notebooks to execute consistent data analysis across multiple engineers on a team has been huge. Sharing results that are embedded with the method to get to them is also much better than just sharing a figure on a slide in a report. The figures we're making are also more standardized now and everything looks very clean. Additionally, the ability to work with python and sql in one IDE is fantastic. We were building an internal python package previously, but it was challenging for people less familiar with python to use and install. Hex has helped lower the barrier to entry for coding and data analysis on many teams at our company.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

We've Transitioned to HEX from Mode around 3 months ago. The main thing i can say is that i love how straightforward it is to combine various data sources and aggregate complex logic around our DB. On top of that, the way you can merge SQL and Python it's just amazing, it has unblocked so much for us, when implementing machine learning models. For someone who spends 8 hours daily On HEX creating dashboards, i can't express enough how easy but reliable the notebook part is.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The thing Hex needs to work the most is on how we translate all the great logic and queries we can set up on the back end, into visualizations on the front end. I'd suggest we add more flexibility on what we are able to do with graphs and calculated fields.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Problem is analyzing end to end analytics and implementing models to describe the day to day of our business. Also while experimenting and unlocking new features, while also trying to predict churn our users and classifying them to give out the best outcome we can to them.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I love how Hex gave me a way to combine SQL, Python, and chart making skills all in one place! I've avoided learning Python for many years, but this setup that allowed me to output well-designed tables and charts let me grow my coding skills like never before. I love how easily accessible the reports I produce are to the rest of my team, and how flexible it is with inputs for stakeholders to self-serve.

I also really appreciate the amount of work that Hex puts into updating features; it's rare that there's so many great features that get added on all at once at regular intervals. I always read through each email and there's always something that really makes a big difference in my workflow.

Hex is a tool I would recommend to every analyst I know - especially those still using Tableau or similar BI tools! I've spent many years working in Tableau and it's basically out of my regular workflow except for minor needs here and there.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Hex isn't built to be a dashboard tool, but I wish there was more flexibility in presenting the information. For example, it would be so handy to be able to organize cells in a PowerPoint layout, and then download the whole section as an image to pop into a slide deck. Tableau does this pretty seamlessly.

I also wish that you could download tables and pivot tables as an image; as handy as it is to now be able to download charts as images, tables come up quite often in my work and people prefer to see them sometimes. I regularly just take screenshots of my reports as a consequence, and I'd love a tidier way of sharing information.

I also wish that you could show "Totals" at the bottom of pivot charts, just like the table cells; it's really helpful to see an aggregation of aggregates for teams. 

Similarly, though it may be too much to ask for - I regularly use % difference across the pivot table to show changes over time. Tableau has the ability to perform table calculations that run across the pane or table chart. It would be so handy to have that feature available in Hex - it's really the one thing that keeps me going back to Tableau since it's just faster to drag and drop this calculation than to rework a dataframe in Python.

I also wish there was a way to have some formatting set as default for the whole project; for example, I often work with $ amounts, and constantly need to change in each cell the fixed decimals to 0 when formatting as "Currency".

I also wish that you could have collections within collections; our company is partner to another company, and it could easily explode into too many collections at just one level.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to look at large amounts of gaming data, and understand how our customers engage with our platform in a very specific economy setup. Since there's a lot of moving parts, we need to be able to hone in on sections at a time. We primarily use Hex to have a SQL query pull the data we need, then a combination of Python and inputs to narrow down to our target, and then display everything via charts, pivot tables, or regular tables. 

Hex helps us specifically by allowing us to stay on top of suspicious activity via alerts, regular updates via scheduled runs, and visibility to team members that may not be familiar with other BI tools/have license access readily available. It helps us keep track of regular daily metrics, like our financial KPIs, retention, and similar behaviour trends.

You can spin up a finished "product" for use and not have to worry much about how the product is hosted, version controls, environments, database connectors/access, etc. This is AMAZING.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Compartmentalizing code within the notebook can get unwieldy pretty quickly. Sections help, but it would be really cool to have multiple notebooks/files and be able to roll those all into 1 data app!

Instead of going cell by cell, it would be cool to be able to just turn off the "smart" graph-based execution patterns. Sometimes I am still building and don't want to refresh the upstream data. But I have to remember to click "run just this cell" every time, which isn't practical. Having a sort of "mode" would be useful.

Sometimes the downstream graphs get into weird states where they can't display anything and have somehow lost connection to variables. I am able to get around it by recreating the chart, but that sucks.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I think Hex is an amazing tool, and very worthwhile to have as part of your data stack. Super useful to prototype, share visibility with users (and hide the code). I think as a way to bring something to "market" (ie: internal consumption) quickly, it is by far the best solution I've found. It's a bit expensive, but hoping that gets better with time.

visuals are often missing nice functionalities found in Tableau or PBI (e.g. advanced tooltips).
Sensitive projects are sometimes avoided in HEX. Not a trust thing, but a zero knowledge arch can unblock this.

Crtitical: Notebooks are vertical blobs currently. The future seems to be going in a different direction from a UI perspective. Large notebooks currently need alot of scrolling and searching. Ideally this would be a canvas like Miro and Count.co.

I find Hex extremely useful with the integration of different platforms and different coding possibilities. It allows us to easily use the data we have in different automation methods and UI apps. It allows for easy implementation with our datasets and is used in different automations daily. Overall it improves our customer service and support.

There is still a few upskilling I need to do for myself but overall I am happy with the solution.

It is clear to see things and manipulate data sets. I can add new fields without writing a SQL query to create it. The visualization tool is simple to use, and i can easily see what is happening in the app versus notebook.

I don't like using "hex magic"; it's not clear what it does, and when i use it as an assistant to quickly change visualizations, it doesn't work. It's also not as user friendly. I would like to be able to use this as a dashboard for users to be able to use filters to adjust a date range, for example, to modify multiple visualizations at once, but this is not possible with thei current limitations.

I have a huge data set that I've been making reports in Looker with. But we want to see a very specific subset of data and also be able to visualize it. looker is too simple, but creating the query in snowflake would be too complicated.

The biggest issue is the lack of intuitive controls for some basic functions (ie. filter functions for tables, aggregate calculations on pivots like runsum) as well as the rigidity of dashboard design. would love to be able to have the ability to create custom color pallets that are persistent across my entire hex instance, so i don't have to recreate it every time

The ability to blend SQL, Python and Pivot in one tool. There are so many instances where I want to fetch data in SQL, transform it in Python but visualize it quickly in Excel and HEX does of all of it seamlessly with an added bonus of creating reports using Markdown. Even the charts are very powerful to deep customizations. This has become my go-to tool for analysis and I am always advocating this within my company

The ability to handles large amount of data. I deal of billions of records and sometimes the kernel cannot support it and I have to go back to sql and create some temp tables so any improvement in efficiency is going to be a big win for HEX

I use Hex every day. Hex magic is an incredibly powerful AI tool that can help write sql and python. It works incredibly well. I also love that one can use sql and python within the same notebook, and that creating charts within the notebook is integrated as well.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I have only minor complaints. The two that come to mind are: (1) you can't select multiple cells from the outline side bar and drag them to different places within the notebook and (2) when creating charts you have to format each series individually rather than all at once. For example, if I want to show data points and values for every series in a graph with 5 series, I have to click 10 times. It should be twice.
