Recent AI capabilities are amazing, and I’ve been using them a lot. When I’m writing SQL queries, I especially like the autocomplete features—they make my work faster and help me write more accurately. I also like the data schema explorer when I need to find specific tables, and it’s helpful for quickly exploring their contents. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Hex? Notebooks can quickly get messy once you start creating a lot of cells in the same notebook, and it’s easy to lose your place while scrolling to find the cell you’re looking for. I’m not fully convinced by this Notebook and App partitioning, because it feels clunky and confusing in practice. For example, when you’re working with tabs, it’s hard to tell in the Notebook which cells are associated with which tabs. I also found it strange that the order of cells shown in the App is different from the order in which they appear in the Notebook. Finally, I’d like you to offer a native way to push data to a Google Spreadsheet, since that currently isn’t possible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. I use Hex for all my analytics, and it really speeds up my work. What used to take me two or three days can now be done in about half a day. I think the AI agent in Hex is really good for doing a lot of analytics and helps generate insights for stakeholders. I also like the guides part where you can set up the context and business logics of your company/data, making it really easy for the AI to understand the context. Setting up Hex didn't even need to create semantic models; you just provide a database and a little context, and it figures out what to do. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Hex? I think the Hex apps could be a little more efficient, especially in how AI accesses data from apps. It would be helpful if cached data could be utilized instead of running the warehouse query again and again. This would save a lot of time, especially when using the thread feature. Its versatility that provides me the ability to utilize AI agent to execute preprocessing and also help to elevate the end product UI so that users can easily navigate through it. Also, it's ability to support integrations SQL query and python in the same notebook provide hassle free experience without having to set up query and preprocessing in different places which is hard to manage. Although it allows teams to collaborate, it often is a messy experience as someone could come in and made an edit to the dashboard without publishing, then another person could come in without knowing it and update something and publish, then realized something was not right as the code has been changed. I hope there could be a way to create an isolated space under a project so that each of the members on the team can come in and edit without having to worry about the aforementioned issue. In addition, if the dashboard project gets larger for having more codes, more data to process, the entire notebook becomes very laggy, and typing codes can be slow as well. Hex used to have an AI assistant Magic, but it was not very useful compared to other AI such as Claude or GPT. But the recently updated to Hex agent made a significant difference in understanding the users' prompts and is able to dive deeper in fixing bugs in the code. Slow load times (largely due to inability to quickly run parallel queries against warehouse) and lacking sharing/app permission options. We get a lot of complaints about slow load times, which drives people to use Looker Studio instead. In terms of sharing, it's very difficult to share a dashboard with a wide audience because with link sharing turned on, everyone in the workspace is then able to find the project. I use Hex for building intensive data applications and AI implementation. I like how easy it is to start building, as it's really just about connecting to the data and starting. Everything is web-based, which is convenient. Hex is better than any other BI tool at analysis, letting data driven people like me generate insights for the business. I appreciate that it allows me to choose the best way of computing, whether I need to use Python or SQL, making it an all-in-one platform. Threads and the AI capabilities are the best I've seen from any competitors, allowing business users to dive deep without disturbing the analytics team. I really appreciate the AI assistant in Hex's recent releases, as it has improved a lot and handles most of my tasks. I can rely on the agent for everything these days, from creating dashboards, and updating reports, to providing a weekly readout of key results that we track for leadership forums. The AI assistant is particularly valuable because it can generate dashboards from my natural language inputs, which is incredibly helpful. I find Hex super useful for a lot of data movement and Python clustering. It's also great for structuring conversational data and serves as an excellent data modeling platform, much like a live Jupyter Notebook. This setup works well for ad hoc analysis. The embedded LLM is quite useful too, as it allows live querying and chatting within the system to the database, which I find really beneficial. Having everything in one platform is quite useful, especially compared to using Cortex in Snowflake or switching back to a Jupyter notebook. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Hex? The specific issue I have is the LLM is overprescriptive, and so it will provide changes to the actual data that I'm working on without explicit instructions not to. Additionally, when you work in it as, like, an extensive way to do analysis, it errors out all the time. I think it's significantly overcomplicated with some of the other work done. I find Hex's AI functionality to be better than comparable tools. I also appreciate the functionality that supports the AI, such as integrating with dbt .yml to grab descriptions and the ability to mark particular resources as higher or lower precedence for the agent. I think importing dbt's analyses as 'verified questions' could be of use, as it's one thing to have AI know the dbt model metadata, but another to have it reference queries to answer specific questions. Additionally, it doesn't support a 'workflow' style of work, which usually leaves it standalone for my use cases. And also the flexibility to use SQL and Python in one shared notebook. The interface is very convenient. Compared to some other tools for SQL querying and dashboarding, I found Hex to be pretty intuitive with a linear user flow, scrolling up to down rather than switching between different tabs for SQL and Python, which is more convenient. What do you dislike about Hex? I think the AI feature can have more potential to learn from existing contacts and some better guidance that we can provide. Another thing might be making the shape of the notebook to have bigger RAM and faster speed. Those would be some quality of life improvements. But nothing major though. Still okay.
