Myself and most of my team don't have a lot of experience with writing sql, phython, etc. The product makes it SUPER easy to analyze our data, automate certain workflows, and move super quickly here. Your platform also serves as a secure way to get my team, and others, access to the data. Hex AI is the 1# feature for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Hex? There are two things. - The #1 issue is the credit system you're about to release. The reason we've been able to move quickly is because we didn't have this credit limit. I can't do like anything with 40 credits. Some of my team use like 500 credits creating new visuals and automations. This is going to stop us in our tracks here and make us to look for alternatives. - The #2 issue is that we've made all these great visuals but we keep hitting page limits and so we have many many one off visuals now. If we could somehow have bigger projects that would make navigating insights and managing systems much easier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you? Main Problem is the business side is reliant on a different department to build visuals and automations. With Hex (and especially Hex AI), we can make significant progress in investigating issues we've identified and solving them. We can't solve everything. I like Hex mostly for its interface, which makes it easy to create queries using different codes like SQL and Python. This allows us to access data from different sources efficiently. It's helpful to have everything in one place, especially since we deal with multiple sources of information that need different processing and SQL languages. I also have issues with cache not refreshing as expected, especially with large projects, and it takes a long time to refresh. There are limitations on tables, particularly with conditional formatting, as it can only be applied based on the value of the specific column, rather than referencing a different column or using a formula for more dynamic functionality. CTE is very confusing, and if a cell is running on an external cluster, not using dataframes, the CTE's result is not reused, causing it to rerun. Also, dataframes only use DuckDB, which is not MySQL compatible. I don't use apps, so I just want a notebook, not an app, and projects permissioning is confusing. I love that you're able to toggle between SQL and Python Cells. You're able to add documentation to dashboards with text fields. The interface is visually attractive. The sharing capabilities are amazing and flexible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Hex? Visualization options could be more nimble and point and click. It's not the friendliest UI for those who just want to do a quick data dive. The dashboard editor does not allow you to add a cell in between sections - it automatically adds to the bottom of the tab. Data needs to be refreshed manually to update data, which can take a while and often requires re-publishing. Sometimes data is downloaded in different formats - e.g., we download a CSV and numbers are in text format so we have to change each column to numbers manually. It would be awesome if there was an excel download option. The ability to set up data exports as CSV or excel files would be great. Setting timezones can be buggy. Refreshing data can be really slow based on how the data is pulled in. Ability to easily ‘double click’ - select a row on one table and have that filter another table or click on a bar in a chart and get the raw data in another table - Tableau style would be awesome. Would be awesome to have ability to turn off automatic filtering on field name across tables. Making changes across multiple dashboards is very manual, even when we use a template. It's surprisingly easy to create a visually appealing dashboard. The process feels straightforward, and the tools make it simple to design something that looks good. Hex isn't super great for power users e.g. those who've been using the Python ecosystem for years: - You can not control the Python kernel (the latest you can use is 3.10 which was released over 3 years ago...). Critical libraries like pandas/numpy are pinned to very old versions and you can not upgrade them - The GUI editor for creating charts is great for business users and engineers who haven't spent 10+ years learning matplotlib 😂 but for someone who has, the whole plotting interface is quite limiting and adds a lot of bloat/latency to the notebook UI - No plugin ecosystem like other notebook solutions. I love the always connected cluster and fast code execution in HEX, unlike databricks where I always have to connect the notebooks to cluster to run any code. I have interacted with customer support once and they were really helpful and easily available to help through Slack. I find coding and implementing a solution in both SQL and Python easy on HEX without much hassles. I am a data scientist at Upwork and use HEX almost daily to work on data science problems using Python and SQL. I am a Data Scientist at Upwork and use HEX as a primary platform to code and implement any business solution using data science involving SQL and Python code. I primarily use notebooks and have successfully built Customer Lifetime Value Model and Marketing Mix Modeling using HEX and have deployed the batch predictions using S3 and scheduler. I really like the simplicity of HEX notebooks and being able to quickly create a visualization for any column in SQL table. I have used Databricks in the past, no doubt it is a much more feature rich platform than HEX but I did not use many of its complex features for my daily work and would always think of some product which is simpler and faster to use and catered to the data science work, HEX comes to the rescue here. One thing which I wish HEX improves is maintaining the folder and file structure in a better way, I do not like the unconventional terminology used here like collections and projects and miss the simple folder and file structure which is more flexible to use and share with others. Limitations of filters on big data and the default null settings. Filters on big data - you can't have more than 10,000 categories in a multi select drop down filter - this prevents a viewer of the dashboard from being able to search all of our organizations. Default null values - nulls being automatically dropped in the filetering process (requiring coalescing and casting as string of the variables) makes it pretty tiresome to validate for missing data.
