## Gusto Reviews
  ### 1. Be Carful: Gusto will steal your money

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tony N. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 24, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's fairly easy to use. Deposits are fast.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto will steal your money!

I was trying to send $550 to a contractor but the bank account was incorrect.

Gusto sent me an email saying that they couldn’t send the money and that if I wanted them to refund the money to my account to reply to the email.

I replied asking to cancel the payment and refund my account.

I then paid the contractor with a check.

Gusto then again, with out my authorization, tried to pay the contractor. This time the $550 went through.

I am now out $550 and gusto is telling me that there is nothing they can do. I have paid gusto an average of over $500 a month for the past 3 years, and they are unwilling to reimburse me the $550 that they stole out of my account.

Clearly this is a company that has no business sense. They will be losing a lot more than $550 when I take my business to another payroll solution.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's good at making payments to contractors

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello Tony,

Thank you for your reviews on G2 and the BBB platform. Our support team has emailed you with more details regarding this payment. Unfortunately, due to the timing of your reversal request and the update from your contractor, we couldn't reverse the payment. We recommend contacting your contractor directly to resolve the payment issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

  ### 2. Gusto does not respond to tax filing problems

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 22, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It was easy to use for the features that it had

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

"I am now facing legal action due to Gusto's failure to properly file payroll taxes. Despite months of trying to get in touch with them, I have been unable to access any reports or history showing what taxes were paid. Every time I reach out, I’m told that someone is ‘working on it,’ but no actual help or resolution has been provided. This has been an incredibly stressful situation, and their lack of transparency and accountability has put my business in a very dangerous legal position. I strongly advise against using Gusto for any payroll services if you're relying on them for accuracy and compliance."

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It was OK for payroll but limited to what it could do and absolutely no support

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello,

We regret to hear about your negative experience and the impact it has had on your business. We strive to provide excellent support and accurate tax filing services, and we apologize for failing to do so in your case. Please contact our customer support team so we can address this matter promptly.

  ### 3. Gusto is a bumpy ride!

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 11, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Decent user interface. I could usually figure things out to get what I needed done.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

They promise more than they can deliver. If you call them on it, they'll deny what their website plainly says. If their errors cost you money -- regulatory fines, for example -- that's on you. If their errors mean their work has to be re-done -- regulatory filings they didn't do, for example -- then that's on you as well.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paying my employees accurately and in a timely way; and managing all the corresponding regulatory filings and payments required.

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello there,

Thank you for sharing your experience with Gusto. We're glad to hear you find the user interface decent and easy to navigate. We apologize for any frustration you've encountered with our services. Our goal is to always deliver on our promises and provide accurate and reliable support. We take your feedback seriously and would like to address your concerns further. Please reach out to our customer support team so we can investigate and assist with any issues you've faced. We appreciate your business and are committed to ensuring your payroll and regulatory needs are met efficiently. Thank you for choosing Gusto.

  ### 4. Incorrect taxes filed, repeatedly

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 13, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The payroll process supported the options for various exemptions for my state.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

They calculate and file incorrect taxes even when they have all the required information. When I contact cutomer support, they do not apologize for the mistake but make excuses. I had to file outside of Gusto.

First, when I switched to Gusto, they asked me for any payroll processed outside of Gusto. Gusto then charged me for that quarter's state taxes owed on the historic payroll. They were supposed to pay and file those taxes at the end of the quarter. However they did not actually file and pay the prior amounts. When I contacted them, they first told me that they cannot provide any support unless I have received a letter from the state agency informing about any mistake in the taxes. After insisting that the state website shows me my taxes are overdue, the support agent agreed to consider my support request but made me submit a screenshot of the state agency website. That was just to even consider my support request, not to respond to it. After some days, they did respond, making an excuse that Gusto is "compliantly unable to file taxes for prior payroll." Then why did they charge me for those taxes? I should have canceled right then but I thought I will give them another chance.

Then, at the end of the year, they filed incorrect taxes on Form 940. The mistake was so gross that anyone could see it - they reported zero taxable payroll. When I contacted them, they took over a week to respond. No apologies at all for the mistake. Instead they responded "I see where you are coming from." As if filing correct taxes was not a reasonable expectation. They had absolutely no way to prioritize filing the correction and said it will take 6 weeks. Am I just supposted to wait for an IRS penalty notice for all that time? I did wait for 7 weeks, and still no amendment filed.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I thought Gusto will make payroll easy because they will calculate and file the payroll taxes. However, that did not turn out to be the case. Their incorrect filings have created more headache than filing ourselves manually in the first place.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Thank you for sharing your experience with Gusto. We're truly sorry to hear about the issues you've encountered with your taxes and the support you received. This is not the level of service we aim to provide, and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. We understand your frustration and want to assure you that we take your feedback seriously.

We would like to investigate this matter further to ensure it is resolved promptly and to your satisfaction. Please confirm your case number so we can look into this issue and work on a resolution. Your feedback is valuable, and we appreciate the opportunity to make things right for you. Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to assisting you further.

  ### 5. Terrible Customer Service & Sales - totally unresponsive

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Javier C. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 04, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto is fairly intuitive for people signing up for the first time

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto was completely absent when I tried to upgrade my benefits package. It seems simple - "I would like to add dental and vision to our existing healthcare package. Please provide pricing." The first customer service rep could not help me when I called. She connected me via email with an old-school sales guy who contacted me a few days after the introduction. He realized we were currently a small company and then disappeared for weeks, not responding to messages. When I emailed how insanely horrible I was finding his service, he finally got back to me, saying he couldn't help us add a dental package. He said he would connect me with someone at the company, but haven't heard from him in over a week.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to pay our employees and contractors through gusto and provide benefits.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Gusto. We're deeply sorry for the frustration you encountered when trying to upgrade your benefits package. Your experience does not reflect the level of service we strive to provide. We would like to look into this for you ASAP and prioritize a resolution on our end. In order to help out, can you please provide your case number?

  ### 6. Broken product + awful customer service

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 01, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Absolutely nothing. Truly horrible experience

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I got hired and enrolled for healthcare / dental. Gusto never processed my enrollment, then passed me around between reps for 2 weeks over email not solving my issue. Finally tried to get in touch over the phone, got hung up on twice ('due to their customer support software glitching').

Problem is still not solved. Healthcare is not the place to cut corners, get an HR software that gives a F and will get your employees set up correctly the first time and will be there to troubleshoot issues.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They solve no problems, they are awful

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello there,

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with Gusto. This is not the level of service we aim to provide. Please know that we take your feedback seriously and will address this issue with our team to ensure it doesn't happen again. If you're still experiencing problems, please reach out to us directly so we can assist you promptly. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we want to make things right. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  ### 7. Gusto continues to disappoint us as a small business

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 12, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Absolutely nothing. There is nothing about gusto that is not available with other similar services.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Every time we need help from Gusto it turns into an absolute nightmare. Their employees will do anything to just get off the phone, including guiding you to set up incorrect tax exemptions and serious compliance mistakes. If you ask for more help or to escalate something they will put you on hold and just end the call. For 8 years they have consistently been the absolute worst customer service I have ever seen from a vendor.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It let's us run payroll.

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello,

We're sorry to hear about your experience. This is definitely not the level of service we aim to provide. We take your feedback seriously and would like to address your concerns promptly. Please reach out to us directly so we can investigate this matter further and ensure that your issues are resolved to your satisfaction. Your business is important to us, and we want to make sure you have a positive experience with Gusto. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  ### 8. Tax errors, bugs, poor support experience.

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 06, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The actual UX/UI is intuitive. Our employees have been paid on time.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Just about everything else. If I had more time I would switch off, but at this point we're quite integrated.

The experience using Gusto is pretty terrible. We have missed tax deadlines, they have erroneously filed (or not filed) taxes, they have recursive bug loops in the app, they send me notifications for tasks I don't actually need to do, they mismanage our workers comp insurance, have had issues sync'ing with our benefits, and worst of all customer support takes a week + to reply.

For the last 2.5 years straight, anytime you send a customer support an auto-responder says "we're extra busy right now!". Clearly they are understaffing and undertraining support.

I've had chains going on for months where I've had to escalate to the CEO because they can't fix our tax issues.

I have very low confidence that there aren't other painful surprises ahead in terms of mistakes they've made with our withholding or taxes.

Highly recommend you go with someone else.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need someone to administer our payroll.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Thank you for sharing your experience with Gusto. While we're glad to hear that the UX/UI has been intuitive for you and that your employees have been paid on time, we're disappointed to hear about the challenges you've encountered with other aspects of our service. We're committed to resolving any outstanding issues and regaining your confidence in Gusto. If there's anything specific we can do to address your concerns or assist you further, please don't hesitate to reach out to support@gusto.com.

  ### 9. OK until its not...just say NO

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jessica H. | Child and Adolescent Therapist & Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 03, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

For those searching if Gusto is a good choice...its not...I thought it was...had a few hiccups, nothing major...and then they overdrew my account, cool fixed it quickly, then I switched our benefits to them. They messed up the withdrawl dates, blamed me and then Anthem (anthem clearly stated they made the change), and then took no responsibility for it. Worst than that, then they penalized me bc the change they made overdrew my bank account bc it pulled two months of benefit premiums and then wouldn't change my processing time back. After SEVEN different people "helping" and "responding" to my issue, I switched. While I like their feature set, its not worth the massive headache that comes when any little thing goes wrong- steer clear!!!

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their customer service is the absolute worst. Seriously, if you ever need help, it takes days to get a response and then you will get multiple people. If you call in, you will wait, and then the person you get won't know the answer and will pass you to the "correct department" who will then have multiple people "help" you via email. They will say they will call you; they won't. They don't care about their customers. They don't care about loyalty. They don't care if they overdraw your bank account multiple times. Its sad, their interface and feature set are nice, but the problems that come when any little thing goes wrong- its a nightmare- go read through other reviews, those who have had problems have all left their platform. I thought it was just "those people" as I had minimal issues for 2 years. Then I finally had the big issue. Had their customer service been responsive, accepted responsibility, or made any attempt to keep me as a customer, I might have stayed. They didn't.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

NONE, they caused me MORE issues. The only feature I am missing now is their onboarding set up and being able to have staff electrnically sign forms. Otherwise, yea, not solving anything.

**Official Response from Brittany N:**

> Hi Jessica - Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and candid feedback. While we know you made the decision to switch to another payroll provider, we have arranged for a tax specialist to reach out to ensure a resolution. A member of our team will be in touch with you soon. - Brittany

  ### 10. Gusto Over Promises and Under Delivers (Do Not Reccomend)

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Facilities Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

App Functions and User experience. Easy Benefits understanding.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto has horrible customer service. I simply don't have the time to give energy toward making sense of how bad they are as a company. Now, they have some good employees here and there. BUT, the company as a whole has horrible ideals and service. We have had multiple accounts where we needed in depth payroll support. The support is non existent, and it takes weeks in some cases to get answers. Sometimes, a month. I would reccomend going elsewhere if you have a team of 10 or more.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

NA

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> We're sorry to hear about your negative experience with our customer service. We aim to provide reliable and efficient support, and we regret that we did not meet your expectations. Your feedback will help us identify areas for improvement.

  ### 11. Nice functionality which is completely ruined by TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christopher W. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Good Graphic Interface, easy to use and has a contractor only pricing

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The verification process is arduous and the customer support is a typical foreign call center where the agent didnt even know what the word "escalate" meant and doesnt communicate what needs to be done or a timeline. I cant pay my contractors which I made abundantly clear to the support rep "Angel" who couldnt escalate or let me talk to anyone else and gave me no next steps and no timeline, just 1000 sorries. Why do we put up with these subpar call center support groups - I would rather talk to a chatbot.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paying contractors - altough I cant get to the fucntionality because their mythical "assurance" team never gets back to me and they have to approve me

  ### 12. I wouldnt recommend Gusto to my worst enemy

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David P. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 02, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

There are no upsides. Gusto will fail to file your quarterly tax returns with the state, attempt to blame you for it, and then deny deny deny to the state, trying to claim you werent a Gusto customer, til the state produces docs showing you are and that they were authorized to file on your behalf.

Meanwhile, I have to contend with an $1100 fine which Gusto is refusing to pay.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto is a terrible service, and their CSRs are liars.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is creating more problems for me than theyre solving.

**Official Response from Jackie M.:**

> Hello David,

We appreciate the honest feedback, and we wanted to apologize for any inconvenience or dissatisfaction you experienced while using Gusto.
If there's anything else you'd like to discuss or if you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us directly at Support@Gusto.com. We're here to assist in any way we can.

  ### 13. Used for Nanny payroll. Nightmarish experience. Use anyone else.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Individual & Family Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 29, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto was easy to sign up and get started in a self-serve manner.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Once we started using Gusto, it became clear signing up was self-serve but actually using it and administering it was not self-serve

The Support team auto-closes tickets when they THINK their self-serve documentation answers the question, which can be an infuriating experience.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto did payroll in a relatively straightforward manner, but any nuances would not be easily doable on the platform.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're glad to hear that you found Gusto's sign-up process straightforward and easy to get started with. We sincerely apologize for the frustration you've experienced with the administration process and the support you received. We understand the importance of providing seamless self-service tools and reliable support to our users, and we regret falling short of your expectations in this regard. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team at support@gusto.com directly if you have any further questions, concerns, or feedback you would like to share.

  ### 14. Have to spend multiple hours per week with customer support... software is down often

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Leslie Z. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Not much.......................................

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I've run into a ton of issues trying to do very basic things on Gusto like processing expenses (it won't let me add expenses and run them for anyone at my company for the past three days because it's showing "there was an error communicating with the server") while it lets me do other things.

I've also run into major issues with tax set up; after not being allowed to change my "worker's comp risk class code" for one state that we set up taxes, I spent multiple hours on the phone with multiple agents (one of them recommended I reach out to the tax team over email, who acknowledged my ticket, and proceeded not to respond for a week+ even though Gusto was threatening to block my payroll).

Would not recommend this software to anyone looking, unless you've got time to spend multiple hours on the phone with customer support weekly.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

See my review above

  ### 15. Not user friendly, difficult to reach support, cultural barriers for customer service

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Human Resources | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It takes care of the tax filings automatically

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

It is a very poorly designed user interface that does not easily convey either how to setup accounts or enter critical financial data. User documentation is sparse and poorly written. The system is prone to errors including cancelling payroll runs, losing transaction history and quitting mid session. Support is very difficult to reach with 30-45 minute wait times. Support is quite junior, and has great difficulty functioning off any script they utilize. They also lack visibility into complete transaction history without accessing another system which delays their ability to assess whatever problem. From a time and cost perspective, any of the major service providers such as ADP or Ceridena is worth it to save the time lost.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Automatiocally filing tax documentation and making withdrawals.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We apologize for the challenges you've faced with our platform and customer support. We strive to provide a user-friendly experience and efficient support services, so we are disappointed to hear about your experience.

We appreciate your positive feedback on Gusto's automatic tax filings. We are continuously working to improve our user interface, documentation, and overall system reliability. Your comments will be shared with our team for further review and enhancement.

Please allow us the opportunity to address your concerns and improve your experience. You can reach out to support@gusto.com to share more details and allow us to resolve any outstanding issues you have.

  ### 16. Employers AVOID - Gusto Can't Handle Any Changes to Payroll

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Victoria P. | Owner, Online Media, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 12, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It runs payroll at first. The Sales team is knowledgeable. Too bad they switch to untrained overseas support once you're a customer.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

If you are an employer, stay far away from Gusto. Yes it works at first when you set up, but if literally ANYTHING changes, Gusto screws up.

I moved states early this year and Gusto is still debiting employer fees related to my former state without telling me. I happened to notice an odd charge on my bank account and had to inquire myself. No communication from Gusto!

I changed bank accounts, and Gusto withdrew my payroll from my OLD account despite marking the new account as my "default" for payroll.

Their overseas support team is atrocious and gave me flat out incorrect information around tax time that could have gotten me in BIG trouble with the IRS if my accountant hadn't fixed it. I have no problem with international support but not when it comes to my taxes which could land me in jail if done incorrectly. The int'l team is not properly trained at all.

Overall, I do NOT recommend Gusto. Sure it will work at first when you're speaking to the US sales team, but once you're a customer, they'll connect you to the Philippines support team who has NO clue about anything related to US payroll. Shameful.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They ran payroll when i first signed up.

  ### 17. The single worst company and service I've ever come across in 2 decades

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It provides the correct documentation for onboarding US-based workers, and helps us stay compliant with US tax law. The bare minimum I'd expect from this software, but it does do that.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Where to start. Their service team appears to have been gutted, no one has any answers. You can't onboard certain international staff. The costs of doing business with Gusto have soared into the mid-five figures. They advertize "no hidden fees" which is nonsense.

Frustrating doesn't cover it. The INSTANT I'm able to ditch this software and company I will be immedaitely.

I've worked in B2B service for 20 years... I've never suffered an experience that made me this upset before.

Please just stay away from Gusto, there are plenty of alternatives, they might not be better, but there's just no chance they're worse.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When it comes to "automatically filling out 1099 and W2 forms for "very standard" onboards", Gusto does do that. It maintains a record and helps our company stay tax compliant.

  ### 18. Worst customer support I have ever dealt with

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I can't find anything to share that is positive.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their lack of concern for their customers. Long wait times (longest was 3.5 hours and then they hung up on us after we were finally connected). They rarely return emails and when they did it took 3 days, and the suggested fix did not work.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We want to get access to our FSA funds but we can't access them because our login keeps blocking us. They just send us email asking for documentation that we have and can show by scanning documents in, but now we have to buy a Fax subscription so we can send in our documentation .

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello there,

We're sorry to hear about the challenges you've encountered with benefits and login issues. If you need further assistance, please reach out to support@Gusto.com, and we'll be more than happy to help. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we're here to support your business and employees.

  ### 19. Okay for basic function. Very poorly thought out updates

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nicholas W. | Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 16, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The app for employees is simple to use. Expenses are also an easy-to-use feature for employees. Support agents are also able to key in to your account and share a screen with you, making some of the support questions a bit easier to resolve.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The updates Gusto makes are very poorly thought out. It is not uncommon for them to make an update, then change their pricing to where you need to upgrade or pay for an additional license to continue using the features you previously used that were already included in your current pricing package.

Additionally, if you are in California you can't use the automatic payroll features. They do not have simple logic rules to comply with California's nuanced payroll requirements, generally requiring a significant amount of manual calculations and adjustments to payroll. It's difficult to understand how they are not set up to serve such a huge market such as California. Even minor absences in appropriate system logic can go years after being reported before they are addressed.

Additionally, the quality of their support has seemed to drop significantly over the past year. The agents no longer seem to be experts, rather put you on hold to ask others or read about the issue instead of knowing the system inside and out.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time tracking

  ### 20. DO NOT USE Gusto

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tony W. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It was easy to get setup and their service was good 4 years ago.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their service has become awful. Each message appears in a new, separate email, making it difficult to follow support tickets. You are unable to view open or closed tickets in the system.

I am leaving them because they have made 3 tax errors in the last year and refuse to fix them. The first, they caused me employment taxes in a state we did not do business. It cost use money to fix and they refused to refund or make compensation. The second, they put the wrong address on W2s. They flat out refuse to correct this mistake, again asking us to spend our time and money outside of Gusto to correct. The third blocked us from running payrolll, they generated 5+ copies of the same tax form for us to sign. We did get this one corrected by reaching out to support, they confirmed they had a computer bug in their tax system.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto created more problems then they solve. I would suggest any competitor over them

  ### 21. Truly horrendous

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nick P. | President, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It pays our employees on time. The bare minimum really. Otherwise awful across the board.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Truly horrendous to do business with. They’ve not filled our payroll taxes correctly once since being with them for the past year. We were first noticed in May 22 of an issue from the IRS. It took until August to even get a first response…and guess what? It’s now March 23 and we’re still dealing with the same underlying issues and still paying the IRS penalties. We’ve finally decided to move on but I can’t believe this company is in business with such incompetence.

And it’s not just the tax team - the benefits team switched our healthcare to a new provider and never canceled our old coverage which they were responsible for so we were double billed for 4 months before getting it resolved…and they never lifted a finger to help despite admitting it was their fault, it was their ‘company policy’ to not facilitate refunds from a benefits partner. Absolutely absurd. We are running as fast as we can to a new provider. Advise others stay far away.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating problems is more like it. We are having to deal with tax agencies every quarter to solve gusto's screw ups. It's a mess.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The worst customer service from a platform, no solution.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They have not been benefiting me or helping in any way.

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Software is well designed and feature rich

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Terrible customer service. Right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. They used to have good US based customer service which quietly went away. They do not care what happens to you. They do not care if you cancel your account.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They were helping us process payroll effectively.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> We're truly sorry to hear about your negative experience with our customer service. ### 24. Misfiled Quarterlies, No accountability, Costs us money in State Fees

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Trent C. | CEO | Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It is online... but its 2023, so everything else is too.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Not well run. Multiple times they misfiled or filed late State 941s, costing us money in penalties and fees. Support is not good. They never accept responsibilty and never offer real resolutions. I am not sure if they just have chatbots or NPCs all named Mark A and Mark M... their support is either undertrained or not given the power to solve problems. I set up payroll for four businesses with Gusto, but now moving all four away from Gusto. I added ACH protection to one of my business checking accounts and forgot to add Gusto as an approved payee. The next payroll was delayed in being transferred to Gusto by 24 hours. I explained what happened and that now all 6 of their payee IDs are set to allow, but they still blocked us for 3 months from running payroll at a reasonable date. They required us to run payroll for employees to get paid on a Friday on the previous Friday (because Monday is a holiday), which would mean we had to guess payroll numbers before the pay period even ended. They denied our request to allow our payrolls to be run the same for all four companies and instead insisted that we had to wait three months to be able to run a 2-day payroll again. This means we have had to run payroll for the businesses at two different times each week as final numbers are not available by the time they usually expect us to run it.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Online payroll and time tracking. Time tracking is basic and still not great, though.

  ### 25. Can’t talk to the tax department

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jocelyn T. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Easy onboarding, quick & easy payroll process

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Cannot talk to the tax department, told they don't have phones

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Getting my employees paid and taxes paid

  ### 26. Took Extra Money for Payroll

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mitchell L. | Operations Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Somewhat easy to use, good interface for small business.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Disorganized, poor communication, took extra money from our account and we can't get it back now.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll, hiring. It's less of a benefit, though, lately, and more of a burden to try to work out all of the issues they're causing.

  ### 27. Good for Basics, ASTOUNDINGLY BAD for Anything Else

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rebecca S. | Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 24, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

This was our first time getting employees online for payroll and they loved it. Reasonably easy interface and easy access to things they used to have to ask me for.

Reporting is mediocre, but it is possible to get most of the information I need from various reports.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their PTO capabilities are minimal. Our PTO policy is a bit more complicated than others (pro-rated for normal work hours rather than actual hours worked) and Gusto can't handle it. We ended up having to change some of our policies to accommodate Gusto!! Also nothing is processed until a few days AFTER pay day. So when holidays renew on the 1st of a month, our employees are actually receiving them around the 25th of the month!

And I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT USE THEIR BENEFITS INTEGRATION. We have been trying to get it set up since last June. I had a few questions (one of which is whether Gusto could handle our unusual premium setup - yes, this is foreshadowing) and it took until late September to finally get answers. So we get to December, everything is in place, and I go to do the final check before our benefits get switched over....and everything is wrong. They've got the wrong people signed up for health insurance, old premium amounts, wrong numbers of dependents, wrong splits between employer and employee premiums. So I go about correcting them, but every change that was made was wrong in some new way.

So we get to late December and a new benefits year, and we're still not set up, so I manually entered all of the correct benefits and deductions for the new year. Come early January, someone flips a switch and turns on our Benefits Integration, overriding all of the correct benefits and deductions with their automated ones, WHICH ARE STILL WRONG. So now we have actual payrolls being run with wrong deductions. I won't even try to detail all of the ways in which they've gotten our deductions wrong, but here we are in late March (6 payrolls in) and deductions haven't been right yet.

Getting help with any of this has been a joke. The regular customer service people just ignored me until I made it clear that I was mad, then they escalated it to a supervisor, who responded but didn't understand how our deductions work. They finally escalated it to a "Lead Supervisor" who responds and tries to fix things but doesn't see what the problem is. Even after I sent a detailed breakdown of who should be charged what based on a clear schedule of deductions. Do our deductions currently match that schedule? No. Remember how I made a point of asking whether Gusto could handle our unusual premium setup? The real answer was, "No, in fact we're not equipped to handle any benefits integration at all. It will be easier if you keep doing it yourself."

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We wanted our payroll and HR all in one place, online, with the ability to integrate with a lot of other systems. Gusto promised that.

  ### 28. No longer what it used to be

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Online Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto used to feel like a small, honest company in the sea of costly, monopolistic technologies. The prices were fair, and the company was honest. It won our trust.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Not dependable. Gusto doubled the price the moment they ate up the competition. It was a blow to us and our companions who chose to build on this product when it was sill unpopular and incompatible with several tax systems, because we believed in it so much.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We currently use Gusto for domestic payroll and taxes. While it's helping there, it put a strain this year by doubling the prices.

  ### 29. Gusto is mediocre until you need them to do something, then they suck.

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shayne T. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Well, they are a payroll service, so they will pay your employees. Unless there are any changes to your account.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

We had to change our EIN and it took 3 months before there was any return communication from gusto with another 7 months before any action was taken. That action was to inform us that they couldn't change the EIN, and a totally new account had to be created - a week before payday and 2 months into the new year. And this was because the state returned our payroll taxes. After 4 hours on the phone we were told everything was fixed. 3 pay periods later, they pulled payroll from the active AND the inactive accounts and left the bank account overdrawn. When I was finally contacted by them, it was a noisy call center in India, where I was told that I couldn't talk to a supervisor because there was nothing that could be done, and that this was our fault because both accounts were still active and we didn't follow the instructions in the email that they never sent. I was assured that the funds would be returned in 4 days. The next day all of my employees received double paychecks. They are rude, unresponsive, ineffective and I'm not even sure that they have actual employees in the US.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are not solving problems. They are creating them. The only benefit to gusto is that they will make the payments you set up until there is any change in your account info, or you need actual help.

  ### 30. One of the worst payroll companies for small businesses

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zeeshan H. | CEO, Mental Health Care, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 18, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's user friendly to use for the most part and easy to connect with some of the third party companies that have established connections. Overall the platform is easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their customer service is horrible! They are extremely differently to work with. They draft the payment randomly and I have had significant issues issuing my payroll on time with them due to "red tape" and their internal policies that do more harm than good to small businesses.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It makes payroll easy to run and gives employees transparency of their payroll accounts. So when the system works then it's great but when it doesn't then it's horrible to get anything right.

  ### 31. OK until 100 employees TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, HUGE WASTE OF TIME, DONT USE BENEFITS ONBOARDING!

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kris O. | Chief Of Staff, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 13, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

- The employee UI and interface as well as the mobile app are great and give you all the information you need
- When we were smaller it was super easy to use and we had less issues I also remember customer service being more responsive + helpful

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

- Fair warning if you don't have someone reconciling payroll and benefits you could have A LOT of issues you don't even know about i.e. employees getting incorrect deductions
- At this point everything, it has been a huge waste of time for my team and multiple times we were given incorrect information or advice that is not compliant
- Customer Service is terrible my team and I have waited on MULTIPLE requests for more than a month
- DO NOT USE BENEFITS ONBOARDING - there have been numerous times when deductions were messed up and they don't give you the ability to do pre-tax deductions without going through support until we pushed them and FINALLY after months they gave us the ability to do pre-tax deductions when they said it couldn't be done
- Reporting is terrible you have to mash together payroll reports with benefit reports to get what you need - they don't give you enough information i.e. no supporting comments on changes, can't go back more than a year or quarter in certain instances
- They don't have the ability to put in a deduction with an end date
- Also they had offers that went through the onboarding flow that weren't signed and they couldn't find the signatures when we asked them

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They get our people paid, that is it! Right now they are actually creating more problems for our employees and the HR + Finance team. It is unfortunate because I loved Gusto 4 years ago and now I question whether they are going to be a long term product.

  ### 32. Support has gone down hill, 2023

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Easy to use interface and broad feature set

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

We used to have a dedicated account manager who cared about our account. Now all they try to do is upsell you on other 3rd party services.

Support has gone down hill as well. We are going on 3 months with an important tax error they made, with no resolution.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll, Time Management, Employee Onboarding, Contractor Management

  ### 33. Unprofessional. Customer service untrained. Cause problems

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Veronica G. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

n/a I do not have comments here because Gusto did not analyze my case based on facts and just created problems based on a non-sense screenshot. Not flexible and not customer focused at all

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Different people take care of the same issue, so there is no personalized attention, delayed payroll because of a lack of awareness of detail based on specific cases, and no accurate and professional service. So automated that there is no human solution based on a case-by-case situation, creating problems for customers even when there is no history of lack of funds, late replies on my business end or any issues

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I do not have comments here because Gusto did not analyze my case based on facts and just created problems based on a non-sense screenshot. Not flexible and not customer ffocused to problem-solving

  ### 34. Do not use Gusto, they will mess up your employee's child support payments and garnishments.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Steven F. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The timeclock is nice, onboarding is easy, and cost is low

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto does not know how to do garnishments correctly and refuses to take accountability for their mistakes.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None. They make running my business more difficult because of the issues they have created and refuse to fix.

  ### 35. Would not recommend

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Morgan M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 28, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Easy to onboard initially. Easy to swap between employee and admin profiles. Good knowledge bank of advice for most recent government updates impacting employer taxes and employer law.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

They will withhold benefits, but they don't actually process the payments for benefits to the benefits providers.

On multiple occasions, we reached out notifying them that we had changed benefits plans and they were incorrectly over-withholding benefits from employees salaries. They told us on the phone they would follow up over email. Then over email, they wrote back claiming they had been withholding based on our current plan (even though we sent documentation showing we had changed plans) and every time we sent further documentation, they sent us a copy-paste generic reply (multiple times -- this issue still has not been rectified).

Their customer service agents have on multiple occasions given us the wrong information that has led to payrolls not being run on time (because the automation was set up incorrectly) or documents not being sent out that agents said had been sent out.

They file your 941s automatically, which is fine if it is your only platform but if you use other platforms to manage a hybrid remote workforce like we do and have an accounting firm filing your 941s, it messes with filings as it files duplicates. There is no way to turn this off (their customer service has not provided us one).

They automatically assign employees to your main office, so if you don't manually change it, it can double-withhold state taxes from employees across a main HQ location and the employee's remote location.

You can not automate contractor invoice payments or approvals.

This was not a platform designed to manage (1) distributed teams, (2) benefits, or (3) anything more complex than a simple streamlined payroll system if all employees are located in one state. Their customer service is non-helpful and all outsourced, no matter if you call, email, or chat.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have had many issues with Gusto, but because we are deeply entrenched now it is hard to switch off. We wish we had gone with another platform from the get-go.

  ### 36. inexcusably poor customer service

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Its affordable and they handle your taxes.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The lack of customer service which has resulted in an inaccurate amount of money being taken from my account

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its not solving any problem, I hired them because they are a payroll service compant.

  ### 37. Horrid Customer Service

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marsha W. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 04, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

They are online, and they pay my employees ontime.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Horrid customer service. Tier 1 employees are empowered to read scripts about how sorry they are that you are having an issue and they are empowered to read to you how to navigate their site.

What Ive found time and again is they are not empowered to actually think about and resolve your problem. I have so many issues with their tax department. Ive followed their advise and then been burned by problems based on that advise.

For companies that have more than 3 employees, or have employees in more than one state, I would recommend any platform other than Gusto. It is soooo much worse than when we started with them in 2018.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They cause more problems than they solve.

  ### 38. Fine for run of the mill payroll, but if you have a special situation, they're a disaster--STAY AWAY

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Phil S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 04, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

When you want to set up basic payroll service, Gusto works fine. We have a relatively simple need for roughly 20 people. There is an intuitive interface, both for the administrator and for the team members who want access to their payroll information.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

However, we had one special situation regarding income from options that were exercised, and this is where Gusto completely failed. We notified them in early December of our situation, and, after several attempts, got a "specialist" to help us run the special payroll. That payroll did, after much back-and-forth, run correctly, but we had to correct information from Gusto several times. The big problem resulted when Gusto ran the W-2, which was completely in error. Moreover, they then attempted to run a separate payroll in January to erroneously collect additional taxes. When we stopped payment on that, they then blocked our account. After at least a dozen interactions with them, the situation is still unresolved. It is now February 4th, and after attempting to escalate with capable people there (which is incredibly time-consuming) I don't see a resolution on the horizon.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basic payroll. It's not benefitting me, because they have caused our internal payroll a tremendous amount of pain.

  ### 39. RUN AWAY! Worst vendor experience of my life

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 17, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The payroll works well most of the time. They do a lot of state tax compliance that is manual on other systems. But they do drop the ball on some things, so you still have to oversee closely and have a good idea of all the compliance reqs.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Benefits manager is a NIGHTMARE. We waste so many hours on a daily basis trying to get the most basic things done. CS reps have no idea what they're doing - it's probably not their fault because Gusto has set them up for failure.

They break things in our account and input data entry errors all the time, and it takes dozens of emails and months to correct the most BASIC things.
- They messed up our insurance application and told us during the last week of December that we weren't going to have insurance for our employees, so we got to spend our holiday break fixing their mistake. The rep took zero responsibility for his mistakes.
- They deleted our commuter accounts and our employees' funds disappeared for 2 months.
- They attached a different company's healthcare plan to our account and it took 2 months to get them to literally remove the wrong pdfs - shouldn't be very complicated.
- They input data entry errors to our healthcare details all the time and we have to point out the same error 6 times before they actually correct it.
- They failed to send 1095s to our employees, or file them with the IRS, causing major fines on our end.
- It took 4 months to set up our open enrollment this year. FOUR MONTHS.
- Feb is almost over and our healthcare and dependent care FSAs are still not set up and our employees are very frustrated because they can't access their funds
- No direct emails or phone numbers - everything goes through their vortex of support@gusto.com - you might get a response, you might not. They might promise you they're going to own it and fix it then you never hear from them again.
- Healthcare insurance, FSAs, etc. have serious legislative requirements. Most of their CS reps aren't registered brokers and even the registered brokers have no idea what they're doing.

They have bitten off far more than they can chew. They are not an HRIS or ATS or performance management system . A webpage with a couple fields and zero backend functionality is infinitely different than a robust software solution. Gusto is a headache and a problem, not a solution. They've literally brought me to tears because I get so bleeping blocked and my employees are having a terrible experience because of it.

That is just what's top of mind of our most recent problems with Gusto over the past 4 months. We've used them for 4 years and can't want to get away from them. Learn from our mistake and don't do it.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

See my pain points - Gusto does not benefit me at this point. I dread working with them and can't wait to get away. Don't get distracted with the shiny UI - if the backend doesn't work it's useless.

  ### 40. Terrible customer support

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dave F. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 03, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Good features. Guideline integration is great. Easy to use

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Absolutely impossible to get someone to call you back if you need help with anything but the most basic product features. I have called and been told more than 10 times that someone will call me and nothing has happened.

Worse than that they email me every few days to threaten to block my payroll when it's their fault for not returning my phone calls.

I wish I had saved myself the trouble and gotten a more robust solution with better support

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll, 401K. But they are not helping me solve my employees state income tax situations, which makes it pretty hard to run my business. They won't call me back.

  ### 41. More trouble than its worth

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gabby M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 16, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Fun brand/graphics, easy to navigate web platform. Reasonable pricing.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Horrible customer service experienced numerous issues and delays to payrolls. Had our bank account overdrawn. Gusto's system is limited and problematic. Support is unable ever to assist you, and you'll wait on hold for hours. No accountability when Gusto's system malfunctions or functions properly but adversely impacts your business.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll, but its a been a diaster.

  ### 42. Customer service ruins it.

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It is a User friendly platform. Pretty easy to navigate even if you're not sure what you're doing.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their customer service is horrible. No one is in a rush to resolve anything. Tickets are open for weeks with no resolution.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Pretty easy to navigate for onboarding new employees and running payroll.

  ### 43. Worst Experience Ever

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Nothing. Worst customer service I've ever seen.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Worst customer service ever. Kept us waiting for 3 months to migrate our data from quickbooks before we finally had enough.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None.

  ### 44. Great Potential. Absolutely Horrible Execution!

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alan S. Y. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 31, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto says all of the right things. Easy setup for your payroll. Payroll on autopilot and "great" support. The fact is that they have a lot of potential but their execution is very bad.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

While their service is better than ADP, their support is non-existant. I'm guessing that their people are not in the US because they have zero idea how to answer any questions, other than what is scripted. If you select their "autopilot option, they randomly select the days that payroll will be debited from your account. One month it's the day before payroll, the next month it's 10 days before payroll. This might not be a problem, unless you use Profit First or another budgeting method where you place specific amounts into specific accounts on specific days. Every other time I have run payroll, funds have been drawn the day before payroll was due. In my case, for reasons that I have never been told, they attempted to pull it on October 24th and then "penalized" me by not allowing me to run payroll for a full week. This is in spite of the fact that my bank account is linked to their software, so they can see exactly how much is in my account. So they have all of this "great" technology but I had to send screenshots of my bank account balance, which was more than sufficient to run my payroll. In spite of sending verification of funds, I was told that because of their "terms of service", that on October 25th they would run my payroll any faster than November 2nd, a full 6 days from the date of the issue. So, I reached out to customer service on Thursday and I am not able to run payroll until the following Wednesday, which is 2 days after my payroll is due. This is all despite having verified funds on the 25th. To say that I am disappointed with this company is a tremendous understatement. The fact is that they simply do not care about their customers. This is only one of the issues that I have had with them. Payroll is the most important and personal task that a business must complete. Unfortunately, Gusto is more concerned with cutting costs and corners than they are with whether or not your people will get paid. I strongly advise you to use another company.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They should be solving the problem of payroll companies integrating with technology. Unfortunately, they miss the mark by a mile.

  ### 45. Their support is very bad, you get what you pay for.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff G. | CTO | Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's cheap and the UI is good, when it works well it works well but other than that it does the basic unless you pay for add-ons.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their support is some of the worst I've ever worked with. They never follow up, and constantly try to deflect you, you are getting a cheap service because they do not pay for support to help you. If your use case isn't fully automated... you're going to pay a lot more in hidden costs and time.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll, HR, healthcare, benefits. They offer more things but we didn't end up using them.

**Official Response from Samantha Castro:**

> Hi, Jeff. We want to address the support issues you've encountered with our Care team and would like to look into your experience further. Please let us know if you have a case number we can reference to pull up your account info. We look forward to hearing back from you — your feedback is valuable as we strive to enhance our services.

  ### 46. Unresponsive customer service

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Online Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 04, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Seems like Gusto has the most complete set of features in the HR space.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The customer service is not very responsive. We were thinking of upgrading and wanted to talk to someone. The agent I was supposed to have a call with didn't show up to the call. Called me 45 minutes later and told me that she will get back to me. I didn't hear from her again. I followed up and no response.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Legal reporting for contractors
Onboarding, time tracking etc.

  ### 47. Gusto input our teams renewal date wrong leading to no health coverage now for nearly 2 months

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonathan W. | Manager Presales Engineering, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 22, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Currently, I don't like much of anything about this company. The little praise I will give - Paychecks have arrived on time with the correct deductions, and W2s for 2021 were correct.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Mistakes I can understand and work with(I make my fair share). I do not like or understand no response to emails, no follow-ups to phone calls or escalations, and apparently no ability to correct the mistakes.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are not solving the problem they created, so no benefit at all currently.

  ### 48. Terribly Buggy Software, Expensive, Rude Customer Support

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 12, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Nothing - software is clunky and hard to find what you're looking for. It breaks all the time with cryptic warnings about why payroll won't be processed. Integrations with POS systems are not smooth or strong.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Customer service wait times are long and the customer service reps are incompetent. They tell you it's your fault and then hang up on you (happened multiple times).

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto pays payroll taxes but it's pulling teeth to get it to do it.

  ### 49. Terrible company!!! They make it impossible to cancel the plan. Fraudulent.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrea N. | ceo, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Nothing. They make it impossible to cancel it. Terrible l customer support who gets back in 3 days. They are so desperate for subscriptions that they have no easy way to cancel. And when you try to leave a bad review they make you go through like 50 questions to do so - perhaps hoping you'd give up.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Everything!!! The service, the fact that it's impossible to cancel the User Interface, the fact that I have to answer so many questions to leave a review.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Nothing

  ### 50. Gusto does the job but it's not great for expense management

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brandon M. | Account Executive, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's easy enough to see what stage my expenses are in for reimbursement so I know when I'm getting paid. It's user friendly and mobile-friendly so that is a nice feature.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I don't like that you have to manually enter in all the data for every receipt. They don't have a receipt-scanning feature like other programs I've used (expensify or TripActions).

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's a central place where I can manage all my expenses and see what's been paid and what hasn't. I guess there is the convenience of just taking a picture of each receipt and uploading it later.
