## Gusto Reviews
  ### 1. Effortless Onboarding and Payroll Solutions

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Melanie T. | Director of Administration, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 07, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I love Gusto for its ability to solve payroll and tax issues by efficiently filing taxes for us, which significantly reduces my administrative burden, when the taxes are filed correctly if at all. I find the document management features very beneficial, allowing me to upload, edit, and distribute documents like employee handbooks and policies seamlessly to staff members. This feature is enhanced by the capability to have different sections of a form filled out by employees and the administration side, which greatly aids in collaborative documentation and accuracy. Additionally, the initial setup process was straightforward and uncomplicated, reflecting Gusto's user-friendly design.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I find that Gusto lacks a built-in accounting software feature similar to QuickBooks. This limitation means I need to manage accounting separately, which could be more seamlessly integrated within Gusto.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to solve payroll and tax issues, as they handle tax filing for us. It also allows document uploads and edits for onboarding, enabling shared form filling between employees and administration, streamlining our processes. Some issues we have had is Gusto not filing the tax form and us being charged late fees and Gusto has said before someone else has filed the taxes so they couldn't but no one else can file the taxes.

  ### 2. Perfect Small-buisness Quick Payroll!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ian P. | Treasurer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Probably how simple to use is my favorite part about Gusto. Whether employees updating their own bank information, or Admins on-boarding more employees, Gusto tells you all you need to do. I also like how easy it is to run Payroll as it saves all the information from last time so I can do in in 5mins right off my phone. I have not really used the integration abilities it offers with other calendar apps, but I think if my team was a newer generation they would definitely use them.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I don't like spending money, so the monthly fee erks me, but I know it is necessary as I have employees across various states so I use the Plus version, which is a little more expensive.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Probably the thing I am thankful most for that Gusto solves for me is that it does the tax filing for me. With employees across various states, the fact Gusto knows all the accomplices is really helpful so I don't have to know all the states laws about tax withholdings.

  ### 3. Effortless Automated Payroll, but Limited Customization and Hard-to-Reach Support

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jane M. | Online English Instructor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto’s automated payroll and self-service onboarding have made managing administrative tasks virtually effortless. The "set-it-and-forget-it" payroll seamlessly handles state and local tax filings, while the contractor self-onboarding portal keeps sensitive direct deposit and tax information organized without endless email chains. My favorite feature is the automatic sync with accounting software, which keeps bookkeeping perfectly aligned after every pay run. As an added bonus, former contractors retain permanent access to their own tax documents, saving me from a flood of W-2 and 1099 requests every tax season.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

While Gusto handles standard payroll well, it becomes frustrating when you need to resolve complex issues or customize workflows. Reaching live customer support can be difficult, as you often have to navigate automated chatbots before getting to a human representative, which is stressful during time-sensitive tax or payroll errors. Additionally, the platform lacks advanced custom reporting options, and pricing can escalate quickly as base fees and per-contractor or per-employee costs add up as your team grows.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto eliminates the chaos of manual payroll calculations, complex multi-state tax filings, and tedious onboarding paperwork. By automating tax withholdings and automatically submitting filings to local, state, and federal agencies, it removes the constant worry of compliance errors or missed tax deadlines. The platform also streamlines team administration by allowing contractors and employees to self-onboard and securely manage their own tax forms. Ultimately, this frees up hours of administrative time each pay period, letting me focus on high-priority work rather than getting bogged down in repetitive bookkeeping and paperwork.

  ### 4. Intuitive, Secure Experience with Easy Alerts and Paycheck Access

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amanda O. | Senior Systems Quality Assurance Tester, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The interface is intuitive and modern without being overly bloated or animated. I am able to use the website and the app with ease. It is easy to set up alerts whether by email or app notification. I also appreciate getting confirmation of my activity and the security gives me peace of mind. The search functionality is easy to use and the ability to download my paychecks and review my pay within the interface is superior to other platforms I have used through prior jobs.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The only downside, which isn't a showstopper at all, is that there are features that my employer has not enabled so they appear on the interface taking up room. They aren't too obnoxious but I wish I could disable or collapse those widgets since they are controlled by my employer and thus nothing I can do with those features.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My company uses Gusto for payroll and PTO requests. It is easy to look up paychecks and set up account information, as well as splitting the pay if necessary. The PTO portal is easy to use as well to see old and pending requests and track upcoming time off.

  ### 5. Happy Customer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Makinzie L. | Molecular Biologist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 25, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy it is to interact with the website. I like that I can see the date I am getting paid when I login, and that past pay stubs are easy to get. I find this most useful when I am needing documentation of pay stubs such as when applying for a rental, I can easy find all that on my profile. I also really like how easy it is to switch/ split my paycheck. At other jobs, it was always a pain to switch my bank account that is connected to direct deposit, but gusto makes it very simple. I also like I can get my W2 online and not have to wait for it in the mail, as i like to do my taxes as soon as I can to get it done. With this feature I can do it very easily.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I would day gusto satisfies all my needs as an employee getting paid. I guess there are features that I havent tried as it seems it would take a while to input information for budgeting. Generally I am happy with this platform.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I had more confusion about W2 and paycheck breakdown before using this plateform, but now I feel like i have plently of resources at my disposable to understand my financials.

  ### 6. A Reliable Payroll Solution for Small Teams

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Maxx D. | Milstein Scholar, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 01, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto has completely simplified payroll for our small business. Before switching, we were manually calculating tax withholdings and chasing down compliance deadlines, which ate up hours every pay period. Now, payroll runs automatically, and Gusto handles federal, state, and local tax filings without me having to think about it.

The onboarding flow for new employees is a standout feature — new hires can fill out their own W-4s, set up direct deposit, and sign offer letters digitally, which has cut our onboarding time from days to minutes. I also really appreciate how transparent the pricing is; there are no hidden fees, and the tiered plans make it easy to pick what fits our team size.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

My biggest frustration is with the reporting features — they cover the basics well, but if you want to build a custom report or slice the data in a way that isn't already templated, options are limited. I've had to export to a spreadsheet and manipulate things manually more than once.

Customer support, while friendly, can be slow during peak times like open enrollment or year-end tax season. I've had a couple of tickets take a couple of days to get a real answer, which is stressful when it's payroll-related and time-sensitive.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto takes payroll taxes, employee onboarding, and benefits deductions off my plate — things that used to mean spreadsheets, manual calculations, and constant worry about compliance deadlines. Now taxes file automatically, new hires onboard themselves online, and benefits deductions sync without extra work on my end. The result is I save several hours every pay cycle and don't need a dedicated HR person to stay compliant.

  ### 7. Intuitive Payroll Setup with Helpful Proactive Notifications

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cameron W. | Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Fairly simple and intuitive interface, most things were pretty easy to figure out, even for a first timer running a business with multiple employees. They have a fairly innovative system. Adding employees is pretty straightforward as is running payroll. I also really appreciate many of the proactive frames or notifications helping you not only remember things on your to do list, but also sometimes suggesting things you didn't know could be helping you out in your business!

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Switching between pay schedules was a bit of a hassle and we had some snags figuring that out. Also trying to get our unpaid time off in place to be able to deduct from a salaried person's pay was a bit tricky.

Other than that, the cost can be a little bit annoying. It's not necessarily too bad, but it lacks options and even for a single small change in your needs, you potentially have to jump to another subscription tier significantly multiplying your costs.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's taking care of payroll and the associated taxes by integrating with both federal and all necessary state's tax departments saving us significant time with back office HR work, allowing us as founders to focus more on our product and growth.

  ### 8. Easy Time Tracking and Clear Payroll Info in One Place

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Beck W. | Data Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto has been really easy to use from day one. Clocking in and out takes just a few seconds, and it's simple to fix my hours if I forget to clock in or need to make an adjustment. I also like how it keeps me informed about payroll. It's easy to see when I'll get paid, what dates each pay period covers, and how much I can expect on upcoming paychecks. It does a great job of putting all the important information in one place without making it confusing.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

My only real complaint is that I'd like a little more control over notifications and reminders. It would be nice to customize exactly what updates I receive and when.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Since I work remotely, Gusto makes it really easy to track my time without having to deal with spreadsheets or manual time logs. Clocking in and out, taking breaks, and updating my hours if I forgot to clock in only takes a minute. It also keeps all of my payroll information in one place, so I always know when I'll be paid and what to expect. Overall, it simplifies both time tracking and payroll, which lets me spend less time worrying about administrative tasks and more time focusing on my work.

  ### 9. S-Corp Payroll with Gusto has been helpful

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Meghan H. | Regulatory Consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Overall, I’ve had a great experience with Gusto. The dashboard is very clear and easy to navigate, and the menu bar makes it simple to find what you need. I especially like that the homepage highlights upcoming due dates and any missing items, which helps keep everything organized. The onboarding and sign-up process was straightforward, and running my first payroll was much easier than expected. The pricing also feels fair for the services provided. One of the biggest benefits for me has been having payroll taxes filed directly through Gusto, which removes a lot of stress and gives me confidence that deadlines are being handled appropriately.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

One area I would like to see improved is customer support. I wish Gusto offered more support options, such as live chat, a direct phone line, or a FAQ/help center. Even a community message board where users could share experiences and questions would be helpful. There have been times when I’ve had questions that I've had to search online.

While I do feel the pricing is fair for the services provided, I also wish there were more plan options. As a single-user S-Corp owner, I’m not utilizing every available feature, so having a smaller or more flexible plan for businesses with simpler needs would be a nice option

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As an S-Corp, I need to run payroll. Gusto is providing that service as well as calculating the tax withdrawls, so I know it is done correctly.

  ### 10. User-Friendly Payroll and Onboarding, Needs Smoother Account Switching

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jenni F. | Office Manager, Hospital & Health Care, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 29, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I find Gusto pretty user-friendly, which makes handling tasks like payroll, time sheets, time off requests and balances easier. I also appreciate how it manages employment offers and onboarding. It's great that I can send everything electronically to a new employee and keep track of what's completed. The initial setup was fairly simple too, which was a relief.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I don't like having to always log in with a passcode when I switch between my admin account and my personal employee account. It would be nice if Gusto would keep us logged in or save the password without having to enter password and code every time.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for payroll and tracking time off balances. It makes sending employment offers easy and keeps track of what's completed.

  ### 11. Gusto Saves Time with Straightforward, User-Friendly Payroll

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** ceci r. | Business Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 16, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The best thing about Gusto is the amount of time it saves me. Running payroll is straightforward, tax filings are automated, and the platform is genuinely user-friendly. It removes a lot of the complexity from payroll and frees me up to focus on running my business.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I haven’t run into any major issues with Gusto so far. If I had to call out one downside, it’s that the monthly pricing can start to add up for very small businesses. Even so, the convenience of automated payroll and tax filings more than makes up for that in my experience.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto makes payroll and payroll tax compliance much simpler for my LLC, saving me a significant amount of time and lowering the risk of mistakes. Rather than manually calculating taxes, keeping track of filing deadlines, and preparing year-end forms, the system handles those tasks automatically. As a result, I can focus more of my time on growing my business instead of getting bogged down in administrative work, and I have peace of mind knowing payroll is being managed accurately.

  ### 12. User-Friendly Payroll, Benefits, and HR Made Simple with Gusto

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kaleb N. | Sales Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

What I like best about Gusto is its intuitive UI/UX and how easy it is to navigate, even for users who may not have extensive HR or payroll experience. The platform's integrations with other business tools create a seamless workflow, while its strong performance helps businesses save time and reduce administrative headaches. I also appreciate Gusto's focus on support and onboarding, as well as its use of AI and automation to simplify payroll, benefits, and HR tasks, creating a strong return on investment for growing businesses.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

If I had to identify an area for improvement, it would be expanding some of the advanced customization and reporting capabilities for larger organizations with more complex needs. While Gusto's simplicity is one of its greatest strengths, additional flexibility in integrations, AI-driven insights, and advanced analytics could provide even more value. That said, I believe Gusto does an excellent job balancing ease of use, performance, pricing, and customer support for the majority of businesses it serves.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is solving the challenge of managing payroll, benefits, HR, and compliance in a way that is simple, efficient, and accessible. Its user-friendly interface, reliable performance, and integrations help businesses reduce manual work and streamline operations. The platform's onboarding resources, customer support, and growing use of AI-powered automation make it easier for companies to stay organized and compliant while maximizing productivity. As a business management student, I benefit from seeing how technology can improve business processes, increase efficiency, and deliver strong value through both cost savings and a better employee experience.

  ### 13. Gusto Review

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jordan S. | HR Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that we have our own personal support person. We've had lots of questions and I think having one dedicated person helps to make sure our questions are handled in a decent timeframe and there isn't transferring to different departments involved.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I dislike the bring your broker program. It doesn't make sense to only allow your broker to make changes to our payroll when it comes to benefits.

I also dislike how long it takes to get assistance. We had a major issue where our employees didn't get paid because of the length of time to get assistance.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has majorly helped our onboarding process. Before Gusto we didn't really have an onboarding process, now we use Gusto to have employees sign policies and it allows them to input their own information instead of filling out paper forms.

  ### 14. Easy Payroll and Tax Forms with Fair Pricing and Helpful Human Support

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brett U. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like the integration with bookkeeping software, the ability to run payroll with minimal effort, and how easy it is to set up tax forms and other documents. It also helps that I can chat with a real human when I need support, and the pricing feels fair for what’s included.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Switching from a previous payroll provider has been difficult because my accountant can’t easily upload the earlier payroll information. I also don’t like that each payroll comes into my bookkeeping software as a “bill,” and I have to manually change it every time.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me keep everything digital and integrated with the tools I already use. It also makes my day-to-day work easier by letting me automate payroll and save time, without any interruptions in performance.

  ### 15. Reliable platform for payroll and HR management

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Max F. | Chief Executive Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 30, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto is simple to use and makes payroll, benefits, and employee management easier to handle in one place. The interface is clean, the steps are easy to follow, and it helps reduce the amount of manual work needed for regular HR and payroll tasks. I also like that it keeps important employee information, tax documents, and compliance-related items organized, which makes it easier to stay on top of things as the business grows.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Some areas can feel limited when trying to find very specific forms, reports, or advanced settings. The platform is generally easy to use, but certain items may require extra searching or support guidance. More visibility into where specific employer documents are located would make the experience even better.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto helps centralize payroll, employee records, benefits, taxes, and onboarding in one system. This saves time, reduces manual tracking, and gives the business a more organized way to manage HR responsibilities. It also helps create a more professional employee experience without needing a large internal HR team.

  ### 16. Efficient Financial Tracking, Needs Faster Support

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Faisal W. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I use Gusto to keep track of finances, especially regarding employee salaries and benefits, which helps me keep all staff accounting organized on a single dashboard. I like being able to check or download receipts when I need them, as it gives me the option to access and check my payment history. This is particularly helpful for checking my tax receipts, as it eliminates the typical email requests for documents from last year. The interface is flexible in this section, and I find that helpful. Gusto also helps me calculate maintenance fees based on the area, generates legal reports, and automates all calculations while submitting official forms quickly and easily. It's great.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I find the support team's response time slow and it makes me wait longer than necessary. They should either change staff or find a way to respond to user inquiries more quickly. I found the initial setup took some time and was difficult for my team.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to keep finances in check, especially employee salaries. It automates calculations and legal forms, keeping everything organized. Accessing receipts easily is helpful, making tax documentation simpler.

  ### 17. Simplifies Payroll with Easy Setup, Needs App Improvements

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verma G. | Senior member of people operations, Human Resources, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 09, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I appreciate that Gusto determines local tax withholdings accurately and handles direct deposits on a weekly basis for our various offices. I love that it automates exact tax routing, eliminating the need for massive spreadsheet calculations and significantly reducing costly federal tax penalties. The digital compliance signatures during onboarding are a useful feature, making the process seamless. The benefits administration portal is fantastic for handling complicated deductions on employee health premiums, allowing staff to select their medical tier on their own through a beautiful self-service site. I find it incredibly convenient that deductions sync immediately when the next payroll runs, and tax forms are ready with just a single click. I also like that the finalized payroll journal entries integrate directly with QuickBooks Online, making ledger reconciliation straightforward. Additionally, the initial setup was easy, which made transitioning to Gusto smooth for our team.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I am frustrated that the custom report generation system is amazingly slow, and we have to recreate it from scratch. We encounter constant issues with timeouts when trying to export historical tax data, which is a major pain point. Plus, every time a contractor uploads a receipt, the mobile app crashes, which is incredibly annoying.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to automate tax routing, eliminating costly federal tax penalties. It streamlines payroll, syncs deductions, and simplifies benefits administration with self-service options. The onboarding module collects compliance signatures digitally.

  ### 18. Affordable, Easy Payroll with Excellent Customer Support

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kristy W. | Founder/CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 30, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The price is hard to beat. It takes a while to get set up, but the customer service is usually great and helpful - so that's another plus. Once you are set up, the payroll is extremely easy to run (better than other platforms I've been on). I'd recommend this to anyone looking to simplify, cut costs and have a go-to for benefits and the like.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Moving to any platform can be difficult, particularly if you've been in business as long as I have... finding all the required state/tax numbers, inputting them correctly, etc. Other than that, Gusto has been great.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has saved me a ton of monthly payroll. I also like that you can run as many payrolls as needed for the same price. Customer service is great as well.

  ### 19. Great Graphics and Easy Onboarding Make Payroll Feel Effortless

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elyse B. | Director of Human Resources, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like the graphics for Gusto, which make processing payroll seem not as mundane as other sites. The documents feature and onboarding is also really helpful and easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Creating tasks for onboarding feel too bare bones, I'd like to be able to attach documents and other things to tasks but have been unable to do that. I also haven't had much luck with Gusto AI chat, so I have to go to Google to find answers to my questions.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has really made it easy to do background checks and drug testing. So now we don't have to go through third parties. Having it all in Gusto makes it easier to keep track and save all necessary documents. I like the Checkr and Middesk features best because it takes the guess work out of background checks and tax info.

  ### 20. Fast, Free Mobile Time Tracking with Easy Setup and Fingerprint Sign-In

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Max C. | Software Development Intern, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I quite like how easy it is to track all my hours from my phone and I don't have to use a time clock and stuff - I have not tried using any integrations with it before, but I would say it connected well well with the security features on my phone like the fingerprint sign in. It was really easy for me to get set up the first time I used it, and when I moved to a second job that also used gusto, it was very easy. It is completely free for me to uses so. Ia always appreciate that. On my phone, it is always super fast and does not use a lot of data which is nice in case I am working far away. I actually really appreciate that the app is kept simple and does not have any chatbots or other ai features. Where they do use ai, it is just like computer vision stuff that actually makes life easier.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I wish there was better support for phone apps - my phone only worked for one of my jobs and then there was something like "its not implemented for this company yet" or something. I have not had a company that used slack integrations because both said they were kind of useless. I wish there was some integration between Jira and the "performance" section of Gusto.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Working remote, gusto is helping to make sure that I have accurate pay and easy time card management. This is much better than using sheets or something similar like my previous job and it makes sure that pay is always accurate and fair.

  ### 21. Gusto: A One-Stop Shop for HR and Employee Management

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christopher D. | Routesetting and Facilities Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

As both an employee and a manager of other employees, I really appreciate how Gusto acts as a one-stop-shop for HR and employee-detail management needs. I can easily look up and edit both my own information as well as review and suggest changes for employees who report to me.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

As a manager of employees who work in different departments across our company, we've had to figure out ways to provide ancillary formal feedback outside of the formal review, as that appears to currently be restricted to one manager per employee. It would be nice to be able to define multiple managers for employees and allow multiple managers to provide formal reviews to one employee who works in different departments.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's very helpful to have so much employee information easily accessible and manageable in one platform. As an employee, being able to access bot my own details, paychecks, 401k stats, etc. in one place is very nice and saves time. As a manager, I find Gusto equally useful in tracking important employee information and providing feedback.

  ### 22. User-Friendly Interface, But Extra Fees for Add-Ons Add Up

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how user friendly the interface is. If I need to find something, it doesn't take long to poke around the website and find what I'm looking for. For example, I figured Gusto probably had a system for keeping track of vacation time, and it didn't long to find that exact section.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto advertises other paid programs to help their users with different areas outside of payroll. While I understand some of these costs, it would be nice if some of them were included in the monthly cost of Gusto. For example, I could have paid to have Gusto set up all my tax accounts for me, but I wouldn't have minded some help with that without paying extra.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is solving how complicated payroll can be. I don't have to worry about what percentages of payroll have to get taxed and sending the tax money where it needs to go. They are doing a great job at their main goal.

  ### 23. Clean payroll and benefits management app, but would prefer fewer graphics

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I love Gusto as an employee side to check my paystubs, view tax documents, and manage general info. Keeping up with paychecks is easy, and I liked the new employee setup process, including remote ID verification. The UI is nice, though I don't care for the cartoon graphics. I can't speak for integrations. Performance seems fast. Pricing must be reasonable since my startup has it. I'm not sure about AI features, haven't seen any. It's all way better than, say, ADP or the paycheck platforms of yore.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Like I said, I don't like the cartoon graphics. I wish the UI and overall branding were more minimal instead of relying so heavily on drawings. More importantly, it would be much more convenient if paystubs previewed directly in the app instead of forcing PDF download.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto makes viewing my paycheck easier, and I also really like that healthcare and other benefits are integrated in one spot.

  ### 24. Easy-to-Navigate Gusto Dashboard With Great Support and Value

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marcy S. | Managing Director I Co-Founder, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy it is to find what I need in the Gusto dashboard. I am busy and running payroll is just one part of my job. As a small business owner, I need to be able to quickly navigate to the right forms and submit payroll and manage benefits within the tool. I don't use the integrations really but I know they are there. The price compared to our previous systems was attractive, especially for a small team. I don't remember any onboarding training from their team, but it's been easy to onboard employees on our end. I appreciate the level of support so far.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

It's mildly challenging to on-board employees in different states. I wish there was a more centralized hub to help with this piece.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I needed a payroll platform with a high ability integration ability with other systems, but was also easy to use and straightforward. I have not used the AI component to its fully capability, but I look forward to trying this feature out.

  ### 25. Easy Payroll Setup and Helpful Support, But Feature Fees Add Up

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 29, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy it was to set up as someone who is not a payroll accountant. I'm a therapist, so I've never done any of these types of things before. I especially liked Gusto's payroll calculator, which made me feel more comfortable setting up a reasonable payroll. I like that in the future I can integrate other products as I go. The one year discount with blue vine made it easier to decide to go this direction, and made it a no-brainer to ensure I was compliant in federal and state fees. I had to make several calls for support and got a kind person on the other line each time.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I'm a little bummed about how much each different feature costs, at some point it doesn't make having an S-corp feel as much of a benefit as it's advertised to be. Such as, having an extra fee for 401K integration feels like it offsets the money to contribute, which turns me off from doing that altogether. The gym membership option felt misleading, as if I could offer that like an HSA type benefit with tax breaks but that turned out to not be true, and came at again an extra fee. Gusto is already expensive and then felt like a nickel and dime everywhere.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is helping me be compliant as an S-corp and filing taxes on my behalf. That's the real and only benefit I'm receiving. I was intrigued by other benefits like 401K, gym membership, HSA/FSA, but those will come at additional costs that are prohibitive in signing up for them.

  ### 26. Efficient Payroll with Helpful Reminders

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I find Gusto nice and good. I like the emails they send because they help remind me of things I need to get done for the company so I don't have to be on top of it as much. The reminders are quick, concise, and it's easy to click the button on the email. The initial setup was easy enough. Being able to just quickly review my employees and their hours makes it super easy without any bookkeeping. There's a lot of support from the AI intelligence, and the pricing is good. Makes taxes easy to do. The performance is smooth, but I haven't really tried integrations with it yet.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Submitting forms through Gusto is kinda confusing. I think it should be more step by step, making it a little more clear. Also, it gets kind of confusing when there are a lot of to-dos. I'm not sure how to prioritize different things, and I'm not sure what the reason is or what causes each task. Sometimes I have to ignore them because they don't really seem relevant, even though they might be relevant.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for running payroll quickly and managing taxes easily. I like their emails, which remind me of tasks and make it easy to manage company tasks. It is saving me a lot of time every week, so I don't have to worry about payroll and all the HR stuff, and I don't need to hire so many for HR.

  ### 27. Saves our operations team hours during biweekly pay runs

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anna G. | People operations specialist, Non-Profit Organization Management, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Federal and state payroll tax filings are automatically processed on exact payroll cutoff dates. Contractor direct deposits are deposited directly into recipients bank accounts in one business day. Employee self onboarding enables new hires to fill out federal form W4 information without the need for HR personnel.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Data exports for multi state crews stop while the custom job costing reports are running. Enabling changes to worker compensation code classifications means that users have to re-enter current employee profiles. Pay stubs are not able to be changed for previous payroll cycles once the cycle has closed. Pending tax registration updates take a long time to process and need lengthy phone conversations with customer support.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Many states jurisdictions experienced payroll payment mistakes with manual calculations on payroll spreadsheets. We did not need to hire any new in-house tax compliance personnel to automate our multi state withholdings using centralized tax compliance. We're able to run our payrolls in under 15 minutes every two weeks with our operational team.

  ### 28. Effortless Payroll, but Needs Improvement on Leave Policies

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mehreen Z. | OPTOMETRIST, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I really like the ease of doing things with Gusto. It's very good in terms of handling taxes and deductions, so I never have to worry about anything, as it just automatically takes care of it for me. Running payroll is very simple with Gusto. I find onboarding employees very easy, and dismissing employees, along with managing benefits, is also very straightforward. Additionally, the initial setup was pretty simple, and there was a lot of support.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

If you have an employee who's on leave, you still get charged for it unless you dismiss it. Also i think price could be better

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find Gusto makes running payroll and onboarding effortless. Dismissing employees is simple too. It handles taxes and deductions seamlessly, so I never worry about them.

  ### 29. Easy, All-in-One Payroll & HR—But Support and Advanced Features Need Work

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Francois B. | Support Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

What I like best about Gusto
is how simple and organized it makes payroll and HR. The platform is really easy to use, even for people without a payroll background, and a lot of the manual work is automated — things like payroll runs, tax filings, onboarding paperwork, and employee self-service.

I also like having everything in one place instead of juggling multiple systems for payroll, onboarding, benefits, and time tracking. The employee onboarding experience is smooth, and employees can easily access pay stubs, tax forms, and personal info on their own.

Overall, it saves a lot of time and reduces the usual payroll/admin headaches while still feeling modern and user-friendly.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

One downside is that customer support can be hit or miss, especially when dealing with more complicated payroll or tax issues. For basic things it’s usually fine, but resolving more detailed problems can sometimes take longer than expected. Some features, like reporting and customization, also feel a bit limited once your company starts growing or has more complex needs.

Pricing can also add up over time as you add employees or extra HR features, and there are occasional interface updates that make workflows less intuitive than before. Overall the platform works really well for straightforward payroll, but there’s definitely room for improvement in support responsiveness and advanced functionality.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is mainly solving the problem of managing payroll, taxes, onboarding, and HR tasks manually across multiple systems. Before using it, a lot of those processes were more time-consuming and easier to mess up — especially payroll taxes, employee paperwork, and keeping everything organized.
The biggest benefit has been saving time and reducing stress around payroll and compliance. Payroll runs are mostly automated, tax filings are handled for us, and onboarding new employees is much smoother since documents, direct deposit setup, and tax forms are all centralized in one place. It’s also helpful having employees manage their own pay stubs and tax documents without needing HR to send everything manually.
Another benefit is that everything is integrated — payroll, benefits, PTO tracking, and onboarding all work together instead of needing separate tools or spreadsheets. That’s made day-to-day admin work a lot more efficient and has helped reduce errors and back-and-forth communication.

  ### 30. Reliable Payroll That Saves Us Time

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Facilities Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Payroll used to be one of those tasks we'd put off because it was so time-consuming, but now it's quick and straightforward. The interface is easy to use, even for someone without an accounting background, and everything from direct deposits to tax filings is handled in one place.

We also appreciate that employees can access their own pay stubs and tax forms without having to contact us, which cuts down on administrative work. Overall, Gusto has made payroll less stressful and given us more time to focus on running and growing our business.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

If we had to point out a downside, it would be that some of the more advanced features require higher-tier plans, so the monthly cost can add up as your business grows. We also wish there were a little more flexibility when making payroll changes close to the processing deadline. Other than that, it's been reliable and has made managing payroll much easier for our company.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having payroll, tax filings, and employee records all in one place has made staying organized much easier. It also gives our employees a simple way to access their pay stubs and tax documents whenever they need them. Overall, it's helped us spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on serving our customers and growing the business.

  ### 31. Streamlined Onboarding with Room for Clarity

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Goutham K. | Clinical Information Systems Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I use Gusto as an employee for onboarding and payroll-related activities like entering my personal and eligibility information, managing tax and withholding forms, and setting up direct deposits. I like being able to sign onboarding documents electronically, manage my payroll info, and access pay stubs and tax documents all in one place without needing HR. The features I value the most are the purpose-driven onboarding process, electronic completion and signing of employment and tax forms like I-9 and W-4, and the employee self-service portal. Gusto simplifies entering employment information, setting up deposits, signing documents, and checking payroll, giving me better visibility into my pay and tax reduction. I can also update my banking info without contacting HR. The user-friendly interface and having everything in one place make onboarding a nice experience.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The onboarding experience was generally smooth, but some tasks and employment eligibility processes could be improved. Clearer explanations would be helpful, especially for things like a US case number or tax-related details. It would be beneficial if the process included clearer examples and additional guidance directly within the forms, as withholding options and state withholdings can be confusing for first-time users or international employees like me. A clearer summary of all entered information before final submission would also make the process easier.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to simplify my onboarding, entering employment info and tax forms easily, and setting up deposits, avoiding HR. I have better visibility into payroll and taxes with a single platform for pay stubs and banking info updates.

  ### 32. Effortless Navigation and Onboarding—Gusto Makes Payday Simple

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kylie M. | Event Coordinator/Administration, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy Gusto is to navigate and how simple it is to add my administrative information. Integrating my bank account was effortless, and the on-demand pay option has been wonderful. Logging in is fast and straightforward, and setting up and onboarding my information was just as easy—I was finished within five minutes.

I haven’t paid anything into Gusto myself, but it’s worth every penny my employer spends. I haven’t used any of the AI features yet, but I’m sure they’re great. I also really appreciate the schedule-drafting feature because it saves me time; I can enter everything and hold off on publishing until I’m sure it’s ready. Overall, I genuinely appreciate how easy Gusto is to use and navigate.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I believe Gusto is a great product. I would prefer a tab on the UI to navigate to my schedule.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has solved my paycheck-tracking problems. It makes it easy for me to track my income throughout the year, which is something I haven’t been able to get from another application before.

  ### 33. User-Friendly, Attractive App with room for improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cassidy E. | Operations Manager, Consumer Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Very user friendly with helpful guidance regarding state and federal policies and procedures. User App is attractive and easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The geolocation features could use some attention. I entered all of our current work locations and assigned employees to their designated sites. During our first week using Gusto, many employees reported that Gusto wasn’t registering their location accurately, and they had to override the app’s warning. I adjusted the geolocation radius for each site to the maximum (1,000,000 sqft), but many of our locations still aren’t being found accurately.

Additionally, the time clock settings aren’t conducive for companies with overnight shifts. Many of my employees work 5pm to 1am, and if someone has a time punch issue, I have to make two corrections for the same shift instead of adjusting the dates to match their time in a single transaction. For example, if someone forgets to clock out at 1am, I have to clock them out of their original time punch at 11:59pm and then create an additional time entry from 12:00am to 1am on the following day. When setting the schedule, there’s an option to adjust the DATE and the TIME in one operation, so I’m confused as to why that same capability isn’t available in time tracking.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used ADP payroll services before Gusto and the biggest complaint we had was all of the additional fees and charges for every little adjustment, payroll discrepancy or unexpected payout. They charged fees for everything! We like that Gusto rolls most of its perks into packages that can be customized according to our companies needs.

  ### 34. Intuitive PTO Tracking, but Needs Better Future Balance Forecasting

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The interface is intuitive and easy to use. It's clear to me how to see how much PTO and sick time I have and my payday schedule.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I wish that there was the ability to see how much PTO I will have at a certain date. I have to caculcate it myself based on some confusing numbers (i.e. per every 26 hours I've worked) and I wish that I could choose a date in the future and it would let me know how many hours of PTO I'd have. I also would like an option to see how much PTO/sick time I have as hours or as days.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows me to see all of my work related documents and information in one place which is really nice. I like being able to see my W-2 and paystubs and PTO all in one place.

  ### 35. Efficient Financial Management, Needs Enhanced Communication Features

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abigail S. | Salesperson, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that I can allocate portions of my check to several bank accounts, saving funds, and investing accounts with Gusto. It's also very helpful to be able to track my time down to the second and keep better track of lunch breaks. I appreciate the control over finances this provides, which wasn't possible with past time tracking apps like WhenIWork. Additionally, the initial setup was very easy, making the transition smooth for all employees.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I wish we could have in-app capabilities to view all employees' schedules like with WhenIWork's software. It would be great to communicate within the app between coworkers and managers. I also wish the loading was slightly faster upon logging in and that we had the capability to submit time clock correction requests directly to managers within the app.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for tracking pay periods, scheduling, paycheck advancements, allocating funds to multiple banks, and tax tools. It helps me control finances, track time accurately, and allocate money efficiently, improving my financial management.

  ### 36. Best-in-Class Self-Serve Tools That Make Payroll a Breeze

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nitin T. | Chief Operating Officer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I enjoy that the self-serve features are truly the best aspect; employees can go into the system and obtain their own pay statements and update their tax documents with out having to have the company/HR department involved. This is literally perfect as a break from a long workday. In addition gusto also makes processing payroll easy as all taxes are automatically filed and I am no longer spending hours each week manually calculating things and also the ability to "delegate" tasks through approval levels is very good as different managers can complete different types of responsibilities such as time off and attendance corrections, etc.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Navigation is a problem. Finding even something as simple as an employee pay statement is buried 3 menus deep for no apparent reason and i find myself growing tired of this quickly. Load times are slow (especially if we are pulling large amounts of data). Chat support is hit or miss; sometimes you get someone who actually knows what he/she is doing and other times you are waiting for what feels like an eternity for him/her to look-up the answer to your question that you were looking for. No workflow notification exists for termination of employees; which, i would say is a big oversight.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before using Gusto we had multiple systems handling payroll, benefits, time tracking, etc which made it difficult to track and manage information but with gusto, we have one platform for all of our needs and therefore we are no longer require to constantly jump between platforms and enter the same information multiple times. Additionally, Gusto handles multi-state tax issues which was a major headache for us in the past and is now simply taken care of.

  ### 37. Intuitive Payroll Platform, but App and Web Features Should Match

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like the interface, it's intuitive and makes sense. there's a lot of info and i feel like it's all easier to use than other payroll platforms I've used. I like the integration with Guideline, it feels much more direct than multiple platforms interconnected. I'm not tied into pricing but as a user I think it was a good app. Onboarding was fine, no major comments there. Overall works well!

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I don’t like the difference between the app and the online version. I wish I could do everything on both, because it’s harder to handle more official tasks on my phone. Overall, I do like it and I think it makes sense, but I want to be able to use it everywhere. Especially when it comes to financial things, I feel much more comfortable on a computer.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

To be honest, I am an employee and user, I had no say in the decision making process. I don't have huge stake in the game on why they chose Gusto, but I do think it make payroll and benefits much more accessible and transparent opposed to other apps. I used workday in the past and liked Gusto much more.

  ### 38. Easy-to-Navigate, User-Friendly Payroll and Benefits Management

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto is very easy to navigate. My team can submit onboarding forms and timesheets, request sick time and vacation, and I can manage payroll and benefits. It also makes it simple to merge payroll with the 401K system. Overall, it’s a very user-friendly system.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

There have been times when I’ve underpaid or overpaid certain tax items. These issues do get remedied eventually, but I worry that there may be things not being caught that I don’t even know about. I rely on the Gusto team to reduce errors, and when mistakes do happen, I expect them to be very minimal and infrequent.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has helped me pay my employees on time, and it makes the process easy. I was looking for a simple system, and that’s exactly what I have with Gusto. I used ADP and it was too complex even though it had many features we struggled to use it.

  ### 39. Simple, Intuitive Employee Experience

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto is very easy to use from an employee perspective. The interface is clean and intuitive, and it's easy to find things like pay stubs, tax forms, benefits information, and PTO balances. I also like that everything is in one place, so I don't have to dig around to find what I need. Compared to other HR platforms I've used, including Rippling, I find Gusto simpler and more user-friendly for the tasks I use on a regular basis.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

There isn't much to dislike, but I do think some parts of the platform could offer a little more flexibility and customization. Occasionally it takes a few extra clicks to find less commonly used information, and some pages feel fairly basic compared to more feature-rich HR platforms. Overall, though, these are relatively minor issues and haven't had much impact on my day-to-day experience.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto makes it easy to access the information I need without having to contact HR. I can quickly find my pay stubs, tax documents, benefits information, and PTO details whenever I need them, which saves time and makes routine administrative tasks much more convenient. Having everything centralized in one place also gives me confidence that I can easily find important information throughout the year.

  ### 40. Automated Tax Filing and Compliance Wins, but Onboarding and Support Can Be Slow

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 10, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The automated tax filing is the single biggest win for us. It used to take our bookkeeper almost two full days each quarter to calculate, file, and reconcile state and federal withholdings across our three office locations. Now it runs automatically in the background and just flags anything that needs a human eye — we've gone from 16 hours of quarterly tax work down to about 45 minutes of review.
The multi-state compliance engine has also saved us more than once. When we hired our first remote employee in a state we'd never operated in, the software automatically flagged the new registration requirements and walked us through setup. Without that, we probably wouldn't have realized we needed to register until we got a penalty notice.
I also lean on the custom approval workflows constantly. Instead of payroll changes (raises, bonuses, new hires) sitting in an email thread waiting for three different sign-offs, everything routes automatically to the right manager and I get a notification the moment it's approved. That alone probably saves me 3-4 hours a week that used to go into chasing people down.

We're on the mid-tier plan, which runs us a base fee plus a per-employee monthly cost — all told, it comes out to a little more than what we paid for our old system. But when I actually sat down and did the math, the ROI was obvious within the first quarter. Between the bookkeeper hours saved on tax filing (roughly $2,000/quarter in labor cost alone), the reduction in manual HR admin, and — this is the big one — avoiding even a single multi-state compliance penalty, it paid for itself almost immediately. We haven't had a late filing or compliance fee since switching, and previously that was costing us real money at least once a year.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I want to start by saying Gusto isn't a bad product — it's clearly well-built, and I can see why so many small businesses love it. But after a year and a half of using it, I've landed somewhere between "it's fine" and "I wish it did a few things differently," and I think that's worth being honest about.
The onboarding took longer than expected
Setup wasn't hard exactly, but it was slower than I'd hoped. We're a nonprofit with a mix of full-time staff, part-time hourly workers, and a couple of contractors, and getting all of those employment types configured correctly took several back-and-forth sessions with support. Nothing was broken, it just required more hand-holding than the marketing materials led me to expect. I'd budgeted about a week for migration; it ended up being closer to three.
Customer support is inconsistent
This is probably my biggest gripe, and I say it gently because I know support teams are hard to get right. Sometimes I get a rep who clearly knows the platform inside and out and solves my issue in ten minutes. Other times I've submitted a ticket about a tax notice we received and waited two or three days for a reply, which is stressful when the notice has a deadline attached. There doesn't seem to be a reliable way to know which experience I'll get.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Problem: Manual payroll tax calculation and filing
Before Gusto, our bookkeeper had to manually calculate, file, and reconcile federal and state withholdings every quarter. That process ate up nearly two full days each time and left room for costly errors. Gusto now automates this end-to-end, freeing up roughly 15 hours of skilled labor per quarter and removing the anxiety of missing a filing deadline.

Problem: Multi-state compliance complexity
As we’ve hired remote employees in different states, staying on top of each state’s registration and tax requirements became a real risk. Gusto proactively flags what we need to do when we hire in a new state, which has helped us avoid unknowingly falling out of compliance—something that previously could have led to penalties we didn’t see coming.

Problem: Slow, email-based approval chains
Payroll changes like raises or new hires used to get buried in scattered email threads while we waited on multiple sign-offs. Gusto’s approval workflows automatically route requests to the right person, cutting down the time I spend chasing approvals by several hours each week.

Problem: HR team fielding repetitive employee requests
We used to receive constant emails asking for pay stubs or help updating direct deposit and tax withholding information. With the self-service portal, employees can handle these tasks themselves, which has significantly reduced interruptions throughout our HR team’s day.

  ### 41. All-in-One HR Features That Keep Everything in One App

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Robby R. | Co-Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 29, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It offers a lot of features that help keep everything in one app, including timesheets, personnel files, e-sign, and onboarding.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Customer support is lacking. The AI responses often address the wrong issue, and when I’ve connected with multiple people, I’ve received incorrect guidance on how to fix problems or conflicting explanations about the source of an issue. I also find the inflexibility around setting pay periods odd—for example, you can set weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly, but not every four weeks.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto takes a comprehensive view of the entire payroll and HR process and has built an app that helps with both the small details and the big picture. By contrast, something like QB Desktop Payroll can have glitches and flaws that leave room for payroll to be processed incompletely or inaccurately.

  ### 42. Successful implementation for our growing remote service team

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Roxana O. | Payroll compliance officer, Security and Investigations, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 02, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The multi-state payroll module for automated tax filing is capable of managing complexities in an exact manner. This is the direct link between time tracking and monthly salary disbursement calculations which I appreciate. When changes in local laws and regulations happen, compliance updates are delivered to the dashboard as soon as they are made. The entire fiscal year benefits administration is flawlessly synchronized with employee pay cycles throughout the year.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Generating reports becomes very slow when trying to get deep data in a quarterly format. During an important tax audit, access to key tax documents is limited by the mobile application. International contractors have a consistent and vague response when it comes to complicated payroll adjustments.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In our end of month payroll cycle, we took out manual calculation errors in our firm. Centralized document storage enables HR to get tax forms in seconds. Automated state filings eliminate missed deadlines and possible penalties from local regulatory agencies.

  ### 43. Easy Clock-Ins and Flexible Time Editing for Contractors

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jose O. | Contractor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Ease of use is the most important thing for me. I am able to clock in easily, edit hours if mistakes are made, and I do appreciate being able to leave a comment to reflect any changes or concerns. I am a contractor that occasionally and inconsistently does data entry for the law firm, and gusto makes it easy to be flexible.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I wish there was an area where it described when I can expect payouts to be, and I was able to send the hours to be paid, that way hours would not be missed.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Since I am a part-time contractor, it makes it easy to clock in and out and work hours when needed. I appreciate that there is an app I can use as well, making it easy to clock in from wherever I am working.

  ### 44. All-in-One Payroll with Easy Setup

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hannah M. | Junior Office Administrator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto is a comprehensive platform that's great for onboarding and offboarding. I like that it keeps track of and handles all the benefits, taxes, and other mundane tasks, and it has everything in one location. It also has the ability to time track. What I like most is that it handles payments for benefits and other things like that, automating the process. We use QuickBooks integrated with Gusto, which basically creates journal entries that the salary expenses can be matched to, keeping our books straight. The initial setup was easy.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

{"I find the timesheet entry for salaried employees is not the best because it can't be as granular as other platforms have it.","I want more granularity like fractional hours, project-level tracking, rounding rules, and approval workflows—especially fractional hours."}

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is great for onboarding and offboarding, and keeps track of benefits, taxes, and other mundane tasks all in one location. I like that it automates payments for benefits. It also has time tracking, and the QuickBooks integration creates journal entries so I can match salary expenses and keep our books straight.

  ### 45. Simple, No-Frills Interface—But Account Setup Can Be Clunky

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vic B. | IT Administrator II, Medical Devices, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 28, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It’s simple, easy to use, and doesn’t have too much visual fluff. The navigation bar is straightforward, with tabs that clearly describe what they are. I also haven’t run into any issues while using the system. The pricing was just right for our budget and sizing of the company with all the integrations/access needed.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Initially when setting up my account it was very clunky and I had a hard time setting it up. I cant fully blame the system but it also had to do with hour company having this system before.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It’s solving a very simple problem for us: we’re downsizing and tightening our budget. This platform fits well with our current needs, and it was easy for the People team to get up to speed quickly.

  ### 46. User-Friendly and Efficient, but Calculator Needs Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** gina c. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I use Gusto for clocking in and monitoring staff, and it makes these tasks extremely easy. I love how fast it loads up and its user-friendly interface. I'm also able to edit any mistakes I may have made anytime in the past, which is really helpful. The initial setup was extremely easy for me, and although some older staff had minor issues, I was able to help them, showing that Gusto is very user-friendly.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Sometimes the paycheck calculator doesn't work at all and won't tell me how much I'm being paid until I actually receive the money in my bank.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto makes clocking in and out and editing extremely easy. It's fast and user-friendly, allowing me to edit past mistakes. However, sometimes the paycheck calculator doesn't work, and I can't see my pay until it's in my bank.

  ### 47. All-in-One HR, Payroll, and Benefits Made Easy with Gusto

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jessica T. | Director of Human Resources, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It is helpful to have Human Resources, Payroll, Employee Profiles, and Benefits Management all through one platform in Gusto.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto changes the way you input payroll numbers relatively often, about twice a year, and often times it slows down the system, takes time to readjust to, and creates bugs that need to be worked out.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto primarily for employee profiles, benefits management, human resources help, and payroll. We use the concierge service and Gusto oftentimes answers my questions the same day that I message them, making things a lot easier for me when I need an answer quickly.

  ### 48. User-Friendly and Smooth Performance - Great for small to mid sized companies

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 26, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

User-friendly for both admins and end users. It makes single sign-on with Microsoft accounts easy to set up and includes everything a small to mid-size company needs. The initial setup is straightforward, and it’s just as simple to manage ongoing changes. Their support is great and quick to respond.

It also makes it easy to view the org hierarchy, so managing departments and employees stays simple. The automated surveys feature is a big plus, and I haven’t noticed any lag or slowdown. I also haven’t experienced any service interruptions.

Overall, it feels very affordable compared with other known names out there. I haven’t used the AI yet, but I’ve heard good things about its AI intelligence and automation, including Gus or other Natural langage AI assistants.

It needs more features for complicated workflows or integrations.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

It needs more features to support complicated workflows and integrations. It would be great to have a native API or built-in integration tools. Also, it’s not as strong as other systems when it comes to customization for high-end, large companies.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

easy use, easy to navigate, easy to create and onboard empoyees.

  ### 49. User-Friendly App with Convenient 2-Day Early Direct Deposit

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** mary p. | paralegal, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 17, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

the app is user friendly and the convenience of the 2 day early direct deposit. It has a very easy process with a very user friendly app to incorporate gusto into my daily routine. It has a very easy process with a very user friendly app to incorporate gusto into my daily routine. It has a very easy process with a very user friendly app to incorporate gusto into my daily routine.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The the only way to get the early direct deposit is to use the gusto spending account and the fee to transfer to an external bank is high.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time tracking

  ### 50. Reliable Payroll with Room for Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kellie B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I really like Gusto's payroll services because they are super easy to use and really quick compared to other sites we've used. It's great that it allows a quick turnaround, so if there are any issues or if we need to run payroll later, we have up until the night before to submit, unlike others where you have to do it two to three days in advance. It's also easy to go back and correct any mistakes in payroll. We used Gusto before and switched back because it's been reliable and offers good value for money.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The document section in Gusto could be improved. While it's great for storing important employee files, I wish we could upload documents that aren't shared with staff but might be needed for future use, like a leave of absence template. It would be convenient to have it on Gusto, ready and filled with necessary text boxes, so I don't have to upload it each time I need to send it to someone.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto provides a reliable HRIS system and excels in payroll, making it quick and easy to use. It allows last-minute payroll changes and easy error corrections. Document management for employee files is beneficial, though uploading non-shared documents could be improved.
