## Gusto Reviews
 ### 1. User-Friendly UI, But Limited Customization and Overnight Shift Payroll Support

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The UI is quite simplistic and user-friendly. I'm able to save time by searching what I'm looking for in the search bar, whether it's people or tasks that I want to complete. Customer support is also quite responsive ever since Dylan joined - I also like how we can utilize the HR resource as well whenever we have HR related questions. It integrates with Deputy quite well, at times.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Because it's simplistic, there's a lack of customization to tailor towards. company of our size. We have over 300 employees and we're quite unique in a sense where we're 24/7. We have to use a different timekeeping system because Gusto isn't able to support overnight shifts. When it comes to running payroll, I'm not able to add columns, such as non-worked holiday hours so that it simplifies the paystubs and breaks it down for the employees. The Gusto Wallet app has a breakdown of the paycheck's hours but this leads to often confusion when using sick-time or PTO because it doesn't show it on there, so often times the employee does not believe they were paid. I don't really prefer the layout of how the performance feature looks as well.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were previously using a PEO and we had to find a system that was able to be our HRIS system. It does the job where it really did simplify payroll - we're able to export the hours from Deputy, although there are often time errors. The main issue was honestly timekeeping that we had.

 ### 2. Slow Clock-In Process, Needs Deduction Fixes

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Isaac M. | Food Service Coordinator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 03, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that I can clock my hours without having to do another step to send them to my supervisor. I also appreciate being able to see my paystub.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto doesn't have an efficient way to clock in or clock out, especially on the app, which requires logging in and waiting for it to load. The overall process takes about 15 seconds at its fastest. I'd like a way to clock in without having to log in immediately. Additionally, the deductions on the paystub do not add up year-to-date. Each monthly deduction seems to be counted as new, leading to a list of 60 deductions by the end of the year, rather than being aggregated. Also, setting up Gusto took too long.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to clock hours without needing an extra step to notify my supervisor. However, it needs improvement in loading speed and accuracy of paystub deductions, which don't add up correctly over time.

 ### 3. Easy Payroll, but Slow Chat Support, and Nightmarish Benefits Management

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 24, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that using Gusto means I can sign in and run payroll on my own.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Things I dislike about Gusto:
-constant pop ups trying to sell me services I don't want or need (I also dislike that they come back after I x them out)
-whenever I need to find something I need to chat with someone to figure out what report to run and that is often super time consuming. It's an AI bot that I chat with first now which is always a waste of time because they never have useful information.
-contacting Gusto via chat takes forever and often turns into a third party needing to reach out via email to answer my question, which means it isn't ever a quick process to accomplish what I need to do
-I tried Gusto benefits and it was so awful that I canceled before using it for a full year. We would have had a lapse in benefits if I didn't take over managing the benefits at the very end of open enrollment. There was no apology or follow through, and the account manager was horrible at communicating.
-submitting quarterly tax and wage reports or other notices feels more complicated and antiquated than it needs to be

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto seems good at running payroll, and it's nice that I don't need to pay an accountant to do that for me.

 ### 4. Effective Payroll Solution, but Lacking Customer Support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dan W. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 27, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that Gusto does a good job filing taxes on our behalf, which means I don't have to think about it and can do other things. The initial setup of Gusto was easy.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Customer support is a zero. Gusto didn't pay my contractors what they were owed in a timely fashion, wouldn't get on the phone with me to resolve it, and after they did get on the phone, they only resolved part of it. My contractors were negatively affected, partly because their legacy system had an error. Switching providers ASAP

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto helps with paying my employees and contractors and filing taxes where we operate. I like that it files taxes on our behalf, so I don't have to think about it, and I can focus on other things.

 ### 5. Limited Multistate and Global Payroll Support Hinders Scalability

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zak S. | HR Director, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 02, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Gusto has a simple, user-friendly interface and does a good job handling basic U.S. payroll for small teams. The platform is straightforward, easy to set up, and works well for standard payroll runs and benefits administration. The UI is clean, and most day-to-day tasks are easy to complete without extra training

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto is not well suited for companies operating in multiple states or countries. Managing state tax registrations and multistate payroll can become complicated, and the platform lacks the depth needed for global teams. It works for simple setups but does not scale well as payroll becomes more complex.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto helped with straightforward U.S. payroll and benefits administration. It simplifies basic payroll processing, onboarding, and tax filings for small teams, and acts as a simple way to run recurring payroll without needing a dedicated payroll professional. For uncomplicated setups, it reduces manual work and keeps core payroll tasks organized

 ### 6. Simple Basics, But Manual PTO Tracking Is a Nightmare

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's kinda cute and functionality is simple for the basics.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I really really hate how I have to manually calculate my PTO hours (what I've used, what I have left, what calendar year it is, how it carries over from year to year or not). PTO tracking is a nightmare.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I don't know my company uses it for payroll and PTO stuff.

 ### 7. Accessible Across Devices, but Customization Falls Short

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kiley Q. | Community Outreach Advocate, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 28, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It is accessible on all platforms; phone and computer.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Itis not as customizable as my company would like

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

There was human error with how my team was tracking hours before, and hours were always inaccurate. Clicking the button to clock in and out allows for easy and accurate tracking.

 ### 8. User-Friendly Payroll, But Benefits Coordination Needs Work

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sarah R. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 17, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I think Gusto is pretty user-friendly. I like that getting employees onboarded is easy and straightforward. As a business owner, I don't have to spend a lot of time on it.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The benefits coordination is terrible, and I stopped using it. Now it's really hard to integrate benefits because I have to manually do it, which is a pain. I had a terrible experience with Gusto's benefits coordination. Also, I have employees out of state, and that was a terrible process.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for payroll. It helps me pay my staff. It's user-friendly, and getting employees onboarded is easy and straightforward, saving me time.

 ### 9. Prone to Breaking, with Slow and Unhelpful Support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 23, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Clocking in and out is pretty easy when the page is working, but it isn't always working. The UI is ok but they also keep changing it for no reason. Overall there's not a ton I have to praise Gusto for.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The website is very prone to breaking. Customer support is really lacking; it takes a long time to get a response and the responses often aren't very helpful. Trying to get any kind of assistance on issues related to benefits is a nightmare.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I guess it solves the problem of our previous timekeeping system (tracking hours in a spreadsheet and then submitting them to be manually run), but it doesn't do it very well. It works but it's just not a very well-designed system.

 ### 10. Great UI, Needs Better Integration and Support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alexandra M.

**Reviewed Date:** December 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like Gusto's user interface because it's strong and intuitive, making it easy for me to learn the software. I also appreciate their custom report builder function, as it allows me to spend minimal time and effort figuring out which report I need. I can simply pick what I want and even have the option to schedule reports to myself.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

We process payroll for over 700 teammates and it frequently times out due to our volume, making payroll very stressful. The integration capabilities with our scheduling tool don't work because Gusto can't accommodate multiple job titles and read them with the scheduling tool we use. It also can't accommodate all of our benefits, so we had to migrate to an external benefits administrator, resulting in multiple points of entry for our teammate data. Lastly, they can't accommodate multiple pay rates. Gusto's service is extremely poor. They rely almost entirely on their chat, and when I try to reach out for time-sensitive payroll issues, there's no urgency about resolving software issues. For talent management, there's no way to automate processes or groups based on employee status or title. They informed me I wouldn't have access to the FT/PT status reporting feature if we didn't use Gusto for our benefits, even though they couldn't accommodate all of our benefits. They also don't have functionality for approvals or compensation management tools. Workflow management does not exist. There's no way to automate communications based on start date; I have to reach out manually. There's no analytics functionality—no dashboards, and reports can only be viewed by myself rather than managers. They don't integrate with anything, and due to the limitations, we are switching in the next 6 months.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto serves as a record keeper for our talent and documents and is the solution for payroll.

 ### 11. Simple feature upgrades would go a long way

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that the interface is fairly simple and requires little time to understand.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

My least favorite thing about gusto is that for whatever reason, I am continuously unable to remain signed in, which is a major barrier to quickly entering hours. My supervisor is unable to access my hours accurately which has been an issue. I also dislike that every option for leaving a review required AI use.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto does a very nice job at summarizing my monthly hours totals which I can use for grant reports and budgeting.

 ### 12. Easy Navigation and Useful Features, But Poor Customer Service

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 11, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy it is to navigate Gusto. I like how I can view my paystubs, apply for workplace benefits, and view my tax information all in the same place. I mostly use Gusto to view my paystubs, and it does that very well. I also like the color scheme of Gusto and the way the website looks, in general. I like the integration Gusto has with Guideline.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto customer service is poor, in general. I don't like how you can't call customer service to speak with someone and you have to wait for someone to call you back. In my experience, Gusto either doesn't call back in a timely manner or doesn't call back at all. They also tend to be unresponsive to emails as well. Gusto gave very poor customer support when I had a serious issue related to health insurance. The issue is still not even resolved yet, despite this issue arising this past April. I've been very disappointed with Gusto's customer service, which is the main reason I would not be likely to recommend Gusto to a friend or colleague.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me with applying for workplace benefits, such as health insurance. It helps me with accessing my paystubs, seeing my history of payments, seeing how much paid time-off I have, and helping me to file my taxes.

 ### 13. Ok for small companies

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 24, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Their reports are fairly customizable. They haven't really added any new features to my knowledge.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

We didn't end up switching, but we are again looking to switch.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They're mostly decent for running payroll.

 ### 14. Straightforward Navigation, but Customer Support Is Hard to Reach

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The navigation of the website is fairly straightforward

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The customer support is challenging. At times it is difficult to get in touch with support. We are unable to retroactively correct time off requests (like Jury duty) and the reports leave a lot to be desired. The payroll function does not work for us, so we cannot use that feature.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto has a document repository which makes it easy to find items like our employee handbook and travel policy. Approving time off requests is quick and straightforward.

 ### 15. Digital Convenience Marred by Payroll Issues

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Liam C.

**Reviewed Date:** November 24, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I appreciate being able to receive my pay and digital documents through Gusto. Having my documents available digitally simplifies my experience and significantly reduces the amount of paper I handle, making it easier to keep track of important information and ensuring that everything I need is accessible in one place. The digital delivery of my pay and documents through Gusto enhances convenience and streamlines my payroll experience.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I am frustrated by the interruptions with pay through Gusto. Specifically, I have experienced a couple of paydays where my pay failed due to an issue on Gusto's end. This problem was not just isolated to me, but also affected all my colleagues overseas.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to receive my pay and digital documents, reducing paper use and keeping everything accessible digitally.

 ### 16. Lacks most important claimed feature

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Law Practice | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

ability to have Direct Deposit for employees

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

their claim that same day ACH is available for select payrolls

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time off tracking is helpful

 ### 17. Log-In Frustrations and Mediocre Experience

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** K J. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that Gusto is an app.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I almost always have to log in twice if I'm working on the computer.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto to log in and out, helping me clock in and out for my employer.

 ### 18. Effortless Payroll and Benefits Management

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 26, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that Gusto is easy to use and straight to the point. The initial setup was also very easy.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Maybe Gusto should have a dark mode.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for benefit and time tracking.

 ### 19. Easy Payroll, But Needs Speed Improvement

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like how easy Gusto is to use, especially for payroll. It's the easiest I've experienced, and the initial setup was very easy for my team.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Payroll is a bit slow to process on their end.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto solves HR issues in my small company, making payroll easy to manage.

 ### 20. Inflexible and unintuitive employee experience

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Food & Beverages | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 01, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

It's what my employer uses so it's really the only option

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Onboarding was difficult: questions about tax withholding, etc don't match conventional language/formats - I had to find and review the real I9/W4 forms to understand what Gusto was asking for. Can't unsubscribe from emails whenever I get paid, despite it literally happening every week so I don't need a reminder for it (especially if you also get notifications from your bank and/or employer). I'm a UX designer and Gusto misses on personalization and match between system and real world.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I think Gusto is probably providing an easier way for my employer to manage onboarding and payroll than handling documents themselves, but that presents issues for people using Gusto as employees: the tool very much feels designed solely for companies, but not their employees who are required to use Gusto if their companies do.

 ### 21. Efficient Payroll with Room for Improvement

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raquel L.

**Reviewed Date:** January 20, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like the layout of Gusto and how easy it is to access customer service.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Some glitches within the system have created barriers to accessing options or notifications that are outdated and inaccurate.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Gusto for payroll and it handles essential tools for that purpose.

 ### 22. Can’t Sign In to Review Paycheck, and Support Can’t Resolve It

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2026

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

not a lot at the moment - it won't let me sign in to review my paycheck

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

see previous answer. Can't sign in. Customer service is unable to help

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

as an employee it is not solving anything

 ### 23. Nope

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The actual user interface is still fine, but see below re: business practices

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Gusto has revealed itself to be the sort of BS company that offers incentives for reviews, and then does not live up to delivering those. IMO that's a red flag.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coordinating all of the pieces - healthcare, time off, payroll, etc. -- in one easy to use app makes solving any problem easy to do

 ### 24. Used to be my favorite payroll software. Still use it, but things aren't as good as they used to be.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jason K. | Founder & CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 22, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Modern, quick and easy to use. Simple clean UI/UX, everything gets filed and taken care of. It really just works. Integrates with QuickBooks, basically makes it easy. Payroll can be put on autopilot, but it again requires higher fees. Support is good when needed,

Not sure if I'm going to try something new or continue, but I still recommend them despite the fact that they are not as good as they once were.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

They've been dropping the ball lately. Increasing costs, gating features, and holding funds too long before disbursing them. They keep adding more features, but they want you to pay more and more and more for them.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Makes it easy to remain compliant with payroll.

 ### 25. Errors

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Barbara L. | Accountant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that employees enter their own information

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Off and On there are errors and when we try to get them addressed they are never fixed. The pricing is high to so we have considered finding a new place

Like for example: employees that we have been paying for a while and then all of the sudden it will say we have 2 employees nwith the same social and there is not

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They have never solved my issues

 ### 26. I like it because it's easy to get access of my money

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tiana S. | Architectural Project Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

When you can change the time of your hours when you forgot to clock out

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I dislike that it is biweekly when you get paid

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's quick and easy and gives me my money on time

**Official Response from Camden Q:**

> We're glad to hear that you find it easy to access your money with Gusto! Thank you for sharing your feedback, Tiana.

**Reviewed by:** Che'vaniece M. | Psychotherapist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 22, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

the ease of clocking in and out. I also like pto and benefits are in one place

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

customer support. When I had an issue I didn't like that there was not a call option

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Benefit lapse in coverage. I don't feel gusto helped

 ### 28. The site is relatively easy to navigate, but for assistance. it is a unbelievable painful process.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Accounting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 08, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The reports are relatively easy to navigate. I am an account manager and use the system to download payroll reports after each payroll and payroll tax reports, I do not process payroll so can't comment on that function.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The tax dept. customer service is not knowledgeable and the process to correct anything takes an unbelievable amount of time and effort to get anything corrected. There particularly was an issue with payroll being transferred from another payroll provider that was never handled correctly.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are not solving.

 ### 29. They make a lot of mistakes

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Its a simple and easy to use platform. I use it just about everyday

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

There has been multiple issues when it comes to handling of hsa funds.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Centralized location to access all of my benefits and payroll history

 ### 30. Customer Service lacking depth of knowledge

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Easy to use and implementation was quick. Overall it's a goodl platform and works well. But customer service is an issue

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Ran into a problem of integrating unemployment with State of MA, and customer support lacks any depth of knowledge. Have spoken on phone and emailed at least 3 times that on my side, access has been given to Gusto for the State of MA unemployment insurance. However, each time, the support, robotically, cuts and pastes the same text in their FAQ on steps I should follow to provide Gusto platform access. Have already told them several times, access has been given, but their platform still shows access required and Support does not seem to escalate it, and provides the same answer for past 3 weeks now. And already have a letter from State of MA for fines since this has not been taken care of, which Gusto is supposed to do. Not sure what to do how to get this resolved.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll management

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello there,

We apologize for the frustration you've experienced in resolving the issues with your state unemployment account. We understand the importance of addressing issues promptly and accurately, and we will investigate this matter further to ensure it is properly resolved. Please contact us directly so we can assist you in resolving any pending tax setup issues for the State of MA.

As per Gusto's terms and services, we require employer-provided state account information to calculate taxability and determine due dates and filing procedures. Without accurate and up-to-date state account information in our system, we cannot guarantee successful filings and payments with the state.

We appreciate your feedback and are committed to helping you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

 ### 31. Not worth the price to have to do it all myself.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jenna D. | Support Expert, Outsourcing/Offshoring, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

What I like best about Gusto is the pricing transparency and the ability to run unlimited payrolls.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The downside to Gusto is it can become expensive due to per-person pricing. There is no automated workflow or invoice and accounts receivable features. Makes me feel I paid all that money to do the work myself.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto helps me run payroll and keep costs to a minimum.

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello Jenna,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We understand the importance of pricing transparency and are constantly evaluating our pricing structure to ensure it aligns with the value we provide.

 ### 32. Lack of communication

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Haris S. | Vice President, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2024

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I have not been able to use it since they never set up a demo.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

I have filled out 2 forms and answered an email they sent me for additional questions, and after a few follow-ups, I never heard from them. Then I called their sales team and they said that my information got lost but set up a demo that never happened. It is a shame that a company with such a strong reputation is handling new business so carelessly.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll for a staffing business.

**Official Response from Chelsea B:**

> Hello Haris,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We apologize for the communication breakdown and will have a specialist reach out to you ASAP to answer any questions you have and follow up! Thank you again.

 ### 33. Great until you need customer support... Which you will

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** sayed m. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 02, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Simple website . Easy to use . Helps with keeping track of payroll , taxes , pto, sick time . And incorporates health insurance too . Which I like

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Their customer support is non existent. When you end up needing help with their platform, they're not there for you. But they're there to charge you on the dot every month no problem !

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll processing . Pto tracking , sick time tracking and health insurance broker also .

 ### 34. Okay for a user, tough for an admin

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

As a user, Gusto is pretty easy to use. I can request time off, check my paystubs, and see past pay events. As a manager, it's also easy for me to approve time off and handle any other manager tasks that I have.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

We have quickly outgrown Gusto. We can't do bulk uploads or changes to pay roll or pay updates, we can't store demographic data easily and then have that feed to other systems, and we can't manage our contract employees in Gusto... so we have to use another tool for them. And we've had a strange tech hiccup where everyone has to log in with their personal email addresses and we can't sync to their work emails.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto is our current HRIS and payroll system for our full-time US based employees. It's how we onboard folks and help them get up and running once they're hired.

 ### 35. Benefits have been a real struggle with Gusto.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amanda P. | Executive Assistant To Chief Executive Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 21, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

They have been fine for our payroll, and we like their onboarding process.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

With all that being said the benefits portion is a mess. Not only were our health documents not current, but we have been trying to add a dental plan and it is so very slow. I was the one who brought to their attention the error in our health plan documentation. Then with the dental plan, we were so excited to announce the benefit to our employees but the process is now almost a month behind. We just keep hearing that the back end is working on it and that enrollment should open this week, and it has now been 3 weeks. When I talk to their team on the phone they can't give me any details. It has been very frustrating.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The website is pretty easy to use which is nice.

 ### 36. No response from customer service in months - followed by blaming us for not calling them

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 02, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Overall a good product. The product and engineering teams have done a good job!

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Customer service.

We emailed Gusto twice on info@gusto.com about cancelling a benefit. We did not receive any reply. When getting hold of them on the phone the customer rep (Laurence) blamed us for not using the right email address (wrong team) and told us that "we should have called". Jaw dropping response when you expect an apology for no response in 6 weeks...

As a result, we have paid benefits for several months for an employee that no longer needed it and Gusto is taking no responsibility to make this right.

Mistakes are OK. Missing an email is OK. But not owning up to it is just bad company culture.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll and employee benefits. Makes it easier to run our business and not have to deal with multiple vendors for paying our employees and administrating the benefits.

 ### 37. Terrible Customer Service

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Management Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 03, 2022

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Easy set up and mostly intuitive for running a small payroll. Also affordable.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

There is literally no customer service for this company. If you have any issues at all it will literally take WEEKS for them to get back to you with any sort of informed answer. If you do not use their services for things like medical insurance, integration is not as easy and they have very few people working for them that can help you.

**Recommendations to others considering Gusto:**

Make sure you have an actual HR professional and a CPA on hand to help you since Gusto cannot.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The only problem I have solved is that I am able to pay people.

 ### 38. Poor Customer Service

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 02, 2020

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The ease of use is beneficial and I like the interface.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Customer service is via online chat only, as they make it nearly impossible to actually talk with someone. It also takes 30 minutes or more to be connected to a chat representative. I needed help correcting benefits withholding amounts that were out of whack, and the representative that I chatted with said it would be three weeks before they could address the issue. Any application that deals with money and employee's money should have robust customer service that can address issues quickly, not three weeks later. To date, I still do not have my payroll issue resolved.

**Recommendations to others considering Gusto:**

Beware of the very mediocre customer service.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Payroll

**Official Response from Andrea Garcia-Vargas:**

> Hi there — we're sorry to hear you've had this experience. Can you confirm the email tied to your Gusto account so our team can help resolve this issue?

We also wanted to make sure you were aware that via the Help tab in your Gusto account, you can also schedule phone callbacks with our customer support team, or email us directly. Please let us know if you cannot see these options.

 ### 39. Good product, bad service

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vlad L. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 08, 2021

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

The overall product is very easy to use and they're constantly adding new sub-products - healthcare reimbursement, 401k, etc.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

The customer service is terrible - it often takes weeks or even months to get something resolved.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Gusto to manage our payroll and benefits. This all works well, except for in cases when there are issues/questions.

 ### 40. Worked well for 2 people but did not scale as we grew

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 11, 2018

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

I like that Gusto is very simple to setup and makes payroll less scary. At first I felt very confident that payroll was being handled correctly. It handles the tax filings automatically, which has been amazing. I also like that it provides a mechanism to pay contractors.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

When it was just my business partner and I using Gusto for payroll worked very well. As we started hiring employees that is when Gusto started to show problems. One pay cycle our employees were paid 3 days late, despite receiving an email a week earlier that they would be paid on time. You had one job Gusto!

It was difficult to get in touch with support about this issue. When we finally did get in touch we were told that we had exceeded our credit limit, which caused the payroll to be delayed. This was surprising to us because we did not know that there was a credit limit or that we had exceeded it. Support did confirm that we should have received an email notification about reaching the limit, but did not. Instead we just got an email as usual that said "Your employees will get paid on time, and you won't have to do a thing!" Unfortunately the only help Gusto could provide was to raise the credit limit for the next pay cycle, pending manager approval. The person we talked to was very careful about their wording that our employees were not paid late and the payroll system was operating as normal. I cannot see how holding everyone's money for an extra 3 days without prior notice is expected behavior.

Paying contractors is a very slow process (7 days+).

Some time ago Gusto sent us a notification that they were now offering benefits like insurance. We happened to be in the market at the time for health insurance. When we started the process we could only click a button to be notified when benefits were offered. I don't know if they ever started selling benefits but we went elsewhere for that piece.

**Recommendations to others considering Gusto:**

If your payroll is simple then it will work well. If your payroll gets too complicated then I would look elsewhere. I would also advise deploying Gusto to check that the credit limit covers your payroll.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gusto manages our payroll.

 ### 41. Gusto: Not for True HR Service

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2017

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

Payroll service only is fine. What Gusto is trying to do with other services is good, but they don't execute it well. Now Gusto has expanded its service offerings even though they struggle with the current services. I recommend staying away from Gusto's non-payroll services.

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Benefits service is terrible, and customer service is often bad - slow and uninformed. Gusto made errors during the company on-boarding process and has been terrible during the 2017 insurance renewal period. They were tardy sending renewal recommendations, did not provided options from multiple insurance companies as requested (sent only recs from our current insurer), and provided only one week to review and analyze those recommendations. Gusto seemed overwhelmed and unprepared for the renewal period. Emails went unanswered and the "Benefits Advisor" was "unavailable" to schedule a telephone conference to discuss renewal prior to the Gusto-imposed renewal deadline.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paid Time Off process though Gusto is efficient and eliminated the need for us to use spreadsheets to track hours earned, used and balances.

**Official Response from Kira Klaas:**

> Hi there,

Thanks for taking a moment to leave feedback! I'm sorry for any frustration you may have experienced with us and our Benefits team. We take customer support very seriously, and I want to make sure that we've done absolutely everything we can to resolve this for you and to improve for the future. If you don't mind, please DM us or send an email to support@gusto.com referencing this review and I'll make sure that we assist in any way possible.

Thank you,
Kira

 ### 42. STAY AWAY! poor support, nice looking, flawed in very basic ways, concerns about accuracy/compliance

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kelvin L. | Owner, Leisure, Travel & Tourism, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2015

**What do you like best about Gusto?**

User friendly design, concepts, integrations

**What do you dislike about Gusto?**

Poor UI/UX execution, integration with deputy stopped working and support could not be reached and did not call me back in a timely manner. Suddenly deputy stopped showing up on their page of "integrations."

The main problem here is that they break things that worked perfectly fine before. Like the Deputy integration. I don't do payroll for several months out of the year so I was surprised to find when I started running it again, that deputy wouldn't export timesheets to Zen/Gusto.

Then, there are the little quirks that will waste massive amounts of your time and drive you crazy. Like when I setup certain employees originally I was able to add a "paycheck tips" field to each one. Then they made it so that you could not leave the field zero, it had to be greater than zero, which is a completely stupid requirement, but in any case, for one of my employees I made it $0.01 and then when I ran the payroll I would change it to the right amount. However, the previously setup employees did not require that. Then, now, I'm trying to add a new employee, and I am forced to do this stupid $0.01 trick and I can't edit the amount when I run payroll. I'm supposed to have FIXED paycheck tips every single time??? This is just idiotic. There is a very clear pattern of poor testing of feature additions/changes. For a payroll system software that doesn't really ned to be improved constantly it is aggravating that they keep tweaking things for no reason.

Now, I'm trying to find reports to see my tax forms and I can't find them because they've changed all the wording of things to make them sound cool or "user-friendly" or whatever they're thinking. So I click "stay compliant" which is where you can find filed forms and I don't see any state tax documents. I go to the "tax payments" box which is hidden in a very strange way at the bottom of a page unrelated to a menu at all, and I see that tax payments have been made to the state, but I can't see how they calculated them or exactly what form was filed.

If you want to waste a lot of time and pay more than a lot of other payroll vendors then go with Gusto. They are trying to be Zenefits and screwing up their core business in the process. Zenefits now has a free payroll option so conveniently it's the end of the year and I think it's time to get rid of Gusto.

**Recommendations to others considering Gusto:**

Gusto is good for companies where everyone is salaried and there are little to no changes to payroll from one period to the next as they have features that allow you to run payroll without having to think about it too much. For now, I'm going to try something else because their support hasn't been very good, and the very strange changes they have made have broken things that previously worked just fine.

**What problems is Gusto solving and how is that benefiting you?**

integrated with Deputy, employee self-onboarding feature was nice, easy to run payrolls, auto-syncs with Xero

**Official Response from Antonio Gonzalez:**

> Hi, Kelvin. This is Tony on the content team at Gusto. I sincerely apologize for the experience you had. Our customer experience is something we're extremely proud of, so if your interaction wasn’t completely awesome, it's unacceptable. You can email me your contact info at tony@gusto.com and I'll do whatever I can to make things right.
