**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

I like that Google Cloud Shell runs in the browser, which means I can run cloud shell programs from any machine. It works well with other Google Firebase products like Firestore, and from the CLI perspective, it allows me to access both the front end and back end, which is very important. Additionally, the initial setup was very easy.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Google Cloud Shell's memory is not that great.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Google Cloud Shell lets me run programs from any machine, solving the issue of local versus remote access.

**Reviewed by:** Rohit W. | Senior Consultant, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 14, 2025

**What do you like best about Google Cloud?**

High availability and pay as you go model. we only have to pay for the resources which we are using. Also it's very easy to learn

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud?**

training is not available that much easily otherwise all is good.

**What problems is Google Cloud solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GCP has multiple in built security tools like Chronicle SIEM and security command center. In GCP we can deploy apps with minimal overhead.

 ### 4. Best part of using GCP as a cloud provider

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mani Kumar Reddy K. | Senior Software Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

I can save all my work and access it anywhere. Sometimes I might not have access to a PC, but I can still get all my info from my phone and can solve critical challenges. Meanwhile all my data is secure.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Limits on the cloud shell are pretty harsh. Obviously, it's not the right solution to use as a personal remote device as it's not the purpose it servers. Yet I miss the storage space and computational power to run more tasks on it.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I manage cloud services for an application, and I do not have a backup resource when I'm unavailable. Cloud shell allows me to access all cloud services programmatically to solve any critical blocking challenges my application faces.

 ### 5. Very useful for low end system users

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bipul H. | CP Lead | CodeChef CGC Chapter, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 30, 2022

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

I am using this cloud shell not for hosting or managing servers but for doing my net and memory extensive tasks for free. It provides the following things for free:
- You are getting 16 GB of RAM
- A high-speed internet connectivity (123MBPS download and 13.26MBPS upload)
- A decent 4 core Intel XEON CPU
- Code editor with terminal

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

It provides is sufficient to carry out various tasks from a very low-end network device with decent connectivity. A few things I would appreciate are more disk space and a bit more usage quota per week, which is currently limited to 50hrs (7hrs 8min daily approx). There is also a time limit for inactivity after which it get disconnected if we didnt interact with it.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helped me carry out some tasks that I could not do with a low-end computer earlier. With blazing-fast internet, it becomes speedy to install any project without waiting for a long time for it to get downloaded from the cloud. I also use it to test my application for Linux compatibility as it provides the VM instance running on Linux.

 ### 6. Easy to use and follow the docs

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pritesh C. | Principal Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 17, 2022

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

The glcoud command copy and paste on the shell is a convinient way to SSH into the VM. It has all the latest plugins integreated so easy to deploy them.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

They change very frequently but not because of gcloud but anything in cloud business needs to move faster.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using it for testing infrastructure. It is cheaper than other cloud providers. They support all the platforms for linux as well as of Windows.

 ### 7. Good tool to access and manage Resources

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Doolitha S. | Software Engineer, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

I like most because I can access and manage the resources in the GCP platform in a few commands. It saves time since we don't have to go through user interfaces for every task. It's efficient and straightforward to use.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Sometimes it gets a bit confusing since I couldn't see the resources in UI's, but it's okay once I get familiar with the shell.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I used Google Cloud Shell for creating and managing resources for a few projects I did. I think It's fast and efficient than going through the UI's.

 ### 8. Easy to start with

We can develop our applications in the GCP using cloud shell.
A Linux box for small application developement.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

The storage is main disadvantage. It provides very less storage.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Best Linux shell, You use to test your code before deploying in gcp services.
We can deploy the code to GCP services.
We can manage the GCP services

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I used to develop python and node js code in cloud shell.

 ### 10. Google Cloud shell making my life easy

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sumeet L. | IT cloud Application Support, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 15, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

The best part which I like is this amazing feature of Google which helps you to run your scripts and task you need to perform from Command line. You do not have to install any SDK or modules and this is free feature of Google cloud. Google cloud gives you 5GB of persistent storage and on the Linux VM at the backend for which you are not charged. This helps you to run the small amount of workload or probably Batch processing which is great.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Well if you have large workloads then you probably should not work with Cloud shell as this will impact the performance and the session will automatically terminate because you get only 5GB persistent storage. another dislike which comes in my mind is if your session is idle for 1 hour the session will again terminate and you will have to launch the cloud shell again. Also if you are new to Linux then you might probably have to learn bit of Linux commands and get the Hands on before using Google cloud shell

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Well this is very Great feature of Google Cloud platform which full full all your demands if you are running low workloads and using it for Testing purpose.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using the Google cloud shell to deploy the Web applications which is called google app engine and also for container services. We also use Google cloud shell for cloning the source repository with Git hub using the Git command.

 ### 11. One of the Best Parts about GCP

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kerry K. | Chief Technology Officer, Broadcast Media, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2018

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

I love how with zero local setup on my computer, I can access the CLI of my GCP environment.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Startup time is a little slow if it times out or on a fresh start.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not having to worry about setting up authentication to use the shell locally when I'm using someone else's computer or a temporary machine has saved us time.

 ### 12. The best way to use gcloud SDK on a Chromebook (or anywhere)

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrew S. | Cloud Architect & Senior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

Google's outdone themselves with this neat little nugget of functionality, tucked away in the cloud console. By and large, one of the most useful tools for a provisioner and maintainer of Google Cloud services while on the go, or away from your typical workstation environment.

Google Cloud Shell comes with tons of utilities baked in and ready to roll, like the gcloud CLI tool, support for Golang (which makes running quick scripts a breeze), and recently, a new IDE for code editing in the browser.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Coming from a previous Windows workstation environment, some keystrokes I've had to adopt for copy/paste don't work entirely as expected out of the box in some use cases. And while I've never hit it myself, I wish there was a more gratuitous quota.

I'd like to see further expansions to the IDE, such as GitHub integration, akin to C9.io's implementation in the past.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Downtime is definitely a possibility, and while rare, Cloud Shell can be inaccessible, and is currently not covered under service level agreement (SLA).

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

On the go development and operator flexibility; ability to perform maintenance activities from Chromebooks that don't support Crostini; simplified workflows for new hires;

 ### 13. Google Cloud Shell is my environment access in a browser

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 22, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

Google Cloud Shell has made it simple to connect to my devices in my Google Compute Engine environment. I keep my access bookmarked in the browser and can log into it from wherever I need to in order to securely access my virtual machines. It seems to be very lightweight and once you're logged in, it is quick to respond.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

This is one of the things they mention right away, but it can sometimes take 15, 20, or even 30 seconds to initialize if you have not accessed the Cloud Shell in a long time.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Google Cloud Shell has pretty good documentation around it for finding out how to utilize all of its features. It is just so easy compared to the SDK version that requires downloading onto a local machine and installing and understanding how to use it. Plus, as long as you have the Google Cloud Platform account, there is no additional cost to use it.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am able to quickly, and safely have remote access to my test virtual machines in Google Compute without installing any software on a laptop that has limited rights to add new software. There are other capabilities within Google Computer that I'm slowly starting to learn, but this access has made my life much simpler first.

 ### 14. universal ephemeral linux instance with permanent 5 gb storage

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrei V. | Freelancer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2018

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

First, it is free.
Second, while it is like ephemeral it will have a permanent ~5gb storage where the data will be intact after restarts.
Moreover, they offer the public beta that allows to customize use of the service.
The beta allows to start the shell from a custom docker image, and that feature appears to be quite awesome, but for the some corresponding issues that will be resolved soon.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

The beta testing program is still too raw and has issues that will be resolved later.
Folks used to report issues with being charged for some glitch that has taken place while they have been testing the beta. However, the support team did quickly respond to the issue and it has been mitigated via the return of funds, as far I know.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

I encourage you to use the service as it is free and has multiple use cases, in my opinion. As for today it got even possible to get ssh to the cloud shell by native Google tools as:
gcloud alpha cloud-shell ssh

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1) Practical exercises with Google Cloud Platform
2) Managing GCP infrastructure from terminal.

 ### 15. No localhost? No problem! Using Google Cloud Shell as my full time development environment.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

Cloud Shell is a free terminal that you can use for whatever you want, and it runs 100% in a web browser. Seeing how most of my work requires the internet, I’m completely fine with being tied to a browser.
There is 5GB of persistent storage that is tied to your $HOME directory, and this is also completely free. There is 5GB of persistent storage that is tied to your $HOME directory, and this is also completely free.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Most people developing cloud apps usually run a web server of some sort. Usually, you would run it locally and just type in “localhost” into your web browser to access it.
This is not possible with Cloud Shell, so the team created a neat “web preview” function that creates a URL on the fly to point to your local server.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No longer are you tied to a local server. Google Cloud Shell allows me to work from anywhere. This also help collaborate with other team members.

 ### 16. Easy to use and reliable!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

The interface of google cloud is very user friendly. It is easy to use and navigate. It has a fast and reliable shell and command line. The best feature is that its easily accessible because it is linked to the users google account so no further authorization is needed. There is also good documentation and its easy to share to other users.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

Sometimes starting the program can be slow and running certain commands can take some time. There have been instances where the program crashes and one has to refresh the browser.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Make sure you are using a good and reliable browser when using this product.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The interface is a powerful tool for data analysis, especially machine learning and tensorflow. Its also really versitile where I can access on any of my devices any time because it is linked to my google account. So I can easily directly SSH onto my computer with no problems.

 ### 17. Great performance, reliability

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Transportation/Trucking/Railroad | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

Google Cloud Shell is directly integrated into the Google Cloud Platform experience. It is super fast, and almost comparable to a native shell/command-line experience that you would find locally. The best part (from my experience), is that no authentication has to take place for virtual machines hosted on the Google Cloud Platform, everything is done through the user's account. It also allows you to SSH directly into servers from any browser, which is especially helpful when you want to have secure access to a cloud computing infrastructure remotely. This service requires absolutely no setup, which is always awesome.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

The feature-set of the Google-hosted shell is quite limited. Other than setting themes and some other basic settings you would find in any terminal, there isn't much else. The Google Shell experience could improve significantly if there was a possibility of syncing user settings and environments, similar to the way competitors like iTerm, hyper.js, and other native terminals.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Setting up the Google Cloud Shell is a really simple experience that I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a web shell environment.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used Google Cloud Shell mostly for remote work to avoid having to set up things like SSH keys and allow Google to manage access for infrastructures like Virtual Machines. Some of our Cloud Shell users also avoided having to set up their personal environments on new machines by using Cloud Shell for work and maintenance on our backend infrastructure from the get-go.

 ### 18. so amazing

 ### 19. Google cloud shell allows users to manage their infrastructure and applications from any browser

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Giovanna Desireé P. | Encargado de redes sociales, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 01, 2018

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

This software is very useful and practical because it allows easy and simple administration of all resources without having to install any additional tool in the system. I like Google Cloud Shell because when using it the gcloud command line tool of the Cloud SDK and its other utilities are always available to the user, updated and fully authenticated. Another of its great advantages is that it offers 5GB of continuous storage and a totally secure administration. In addition, it offers a large number of implementation and development tools for the most common programming languages.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

One of its disadvantages is that the code editor is sometimes quite slow and can present different flaws.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

I recommend users who want to implement Google Cloud Shell to first use the beta version so that they can become familiar with and learn how to use the software interface.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is a highly versatile and malleable software, its most attractive benefit is that it allows access to the system from different devices. It is a very useful and practical tool.

 ### 20. absolutely love the cloud shell for using command shell access to my cloud resources

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Broadcast Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

super easy to use without having to install the google cloud sdk and other tools in my system. with this, i can use the gcloud command line tool

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

nothing really given it allows customizable environments and in line command editors as well.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

absolutely recommend it - it has a lot of pre installed tools like linux shell interpreters, linux utilities, sdk google tools , text editors, build and package tools as well as source control tools like git and additional tools like python, idocker and many others like mySQL client and more

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

it has a fantastic code editor which allows my team to browse file directories as well as view and edit all files. it also has 5gb of permanent disk storage, especially on a per user basis.

 ### 21. Clean design, easy to understand and use

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2018

**What do you like best about Google Cloud Shell?**

The design of the product is very clean and sleek; it's easy to navigate and see what's where. There is admittedly a lot of information to keep track of; this would make it less friendly to an average end user, but speaking from the point of view as a developer, it's quite useful. Additionally, the use of the gcloud command line tool is very useful and I highly enjoy how easy it is to become authenticated.

**What do you dislike about Google Cloud Shell?**

The connection can be a bit slow at times; it takes up to 30 seconds occasionally for the console to load. It also initially did not support many languages, but is much improved in this aspect now. Support is usually quite quick to respond when reporting bugs with the software (even though there are many, especially in the early days). Finally, it's an ephemeral VM instance, which has its own downsides.

**Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Shell:**

Keep in mind if you're already a Google Cloud Platform member, you automatically have access to the Google Cloud Shell instance.

**What problems is Google Cloud Shell solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use this in the context of assisting customers with their PostgreSQL database instances.
