There was nothing really to dislike about the product, it was quite reasonably priced, but after moving from Google Compute Engine to Linode, we moved to using GitHub Actions instead and saved on the cost of Google Cloud Build. It certainly solved the problem of offloading infrastructure to the cloud and performing automated builds offsite. Automating builds speaks for itself as humans shouldn't need to be doing repetitive tasks like builds and deployment - a computer can do that. Getting support was extremely confusing; trial customers are eligible for support but cannot open a support ticket, so you have to navigate through tens of pages and emails to be able to get in touch with a support representative. After investing days of work in Google Cloud Build, we discovered a certain part of the GitHub integration of this platform was modified (with no notice from their end). As a result, we needed to use a certain API endpoint to add build triggers. When attempting to use that API, we discovered it's "Alpha Whitelist access only" - the documentation didn't say anything about this, and there were no links to apply. After contacting support, we got conflicting answers: one representative told us to contact a Google Cloud Partner, and one sent us a form to apply for early-stage API access. Needless to say, a week after applying, no one contacted us. Support took between 3-5 days to reply and often had no answers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Build: Check out more mature products offering similar functionality, such as CircleCI. The build specification is very straightforward and customizable. The ability to use existing build processes/steps, or to roll your own, provides great flexibility. The deep integration with other Google Cloud Platform products, like the ability to push artifacts to Google Container Registry, and then update a Kubernetes deployment via kubectl, makes GCP centric deployments a breeze. The free tier of 120 build minutes/day is very generous, especially for smaller stage startups or small development teams. Some of the provided build steps do not meet my ideal requirements; the kubectl build step, for example, has issues when you try to deploy the same image to multiple clusters as part of the same build step. Recommendations to others considering Google Cloud Build: Read the documentation -- there is lots of great information buried in there on how to optimize build sizes for artifact storage costs, how to use previous builds as a caching mechanism to speed up builds, and remember that you can customize your build resources for a particular build script.
