I used glusterfs on laravel to load balance my storage. It absolutely served my purpose and was simple to setup.

  ### 8. GlusterFS was a lifesaver for my project.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 22, 2020

**What do you like best about GlusterFS?**

GFS is very straightforward to setup. I liked it because this was stable.

**What do you dislike about GlusterFS?**

I have nothing to say here because I was having issues with my other distributed filesystem and I used GFS as an alternative and it really saved my project from failing. So I really liked it.

**What problems is GlusterFS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Well the problems I was facing with my previous distributed filesystem was that it was taking too much time for synchronizing data across multiple disks and hence resulting into issues during a disaster recovery scenario.
I solved this problem by using GFS instead.

  ### 9. Resilient and Reliable distributed software defined storage

hardware server cost is greatly minimized

  ### 10. Definitely a fan, but performance seems lacking

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aron S. | DevOps Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 29, 2019

**What do you like best about GlusterFS?**

GlusterFS is relatively easy to configure and also lends itself pretty well to automation, for example via ansible. The documentation is mostly clear, at least on the conceptual level, and it comes through clearly that there is a powerful set of enterprise features behind it, especially for people with lower budgets.

**What do you dislike about GlusterFS?**

At times the documentation feels inconsistent. Also, my use case where I PoC-ed GlusterFS was for something where there were many millions of small files. For this, it did not perform very well.

**Recommendations to others considering GlusterFS:**

Definitely test performance for use cases such as few large files vs many small ones. Make sure to use automation and orchestration if you want to scale out, but even for as few as 3 nodes it is worth it.

**What problems is GlusterFS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

On a base level, I think Gluster works well for small installs of 3 nodes, and replication is consistent, HA is achieved, but I have not succeeded in solving a larger scale-out problem of many files and many terabytes of storage used.

  ### 26. GluterFS is not without merits, but I just cannot recommmend it for Production use.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 18, 2018

**What do you like best about GlusterFS?**

It performs surprisingly well (when it's working). It's also able to scale considerably (horizontal as well as vertical). At best, it's transparent to the applications that depend on it.

**What do you dislike about GlusterFS?**

The auto-heal isn't reliable and the process to manually intervene is painful, not exact, and does not scale. Performance suffers when the volumes aren't at 100% health. If underlying I/O isn't consistent the volume can wobble. Community support isn't all that impressive. I will NOT choose GlusterFS for my next deployment.

**Recommendations to others considering GlusterFS:**

I would seriously consider other options, like Ceph, or the commercially supported version Red Had Storage (I think that's what it's called). Or if possible, avoid the need for a shared filesystem altogether!

**What problems is GlusterFS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Shared filesystems with POSIX compliance. Avoiding the requirement to have multi-writer .VMDKs in VMware.

  ### 27. One of the easiest to use distributed filesystems

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David A. | Software Engineer, International Affairs, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2017

**What do you like best about GlusterFS?**

It is very easy to manage, has a simple cli and almost no maintenance. It also runs on commodity hardware, enterprise servers and cloud (VPS) with no issues. This was the solution we adopted to distribute data in a virtual datacenter some time ago and we faced no issues.

**What do you dislike about GlusterFS?**

It uses a quorum mechanism to decide what data is up-to-date and what node wins when "writing". This has it's pros and cons. On the upside, it simplifies the process to manage the cluster of servers in the system: you add servers as you go. On the down side, you need to provision a minimum of 3 servers and a good link between them: if you access a file that's not in the node it has to contact the node that has the actual data (as a proxy) while the data is replicated on the node.

**What problems is GlusterFS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data replication at file level. In a world where websites and backends have to share a common state a number of different technologies have spread. GlusterFS solves the shared state at the filesystem level, and does the easy way.
