The most helpful thing is indeed the possibility of keeping a detailed full record of whatever you want to track, in a systematic and well organized way. The main upside is that you can pull back all data/info you are looking for (i.e. for a claim) after years with ease and recall what was ongoing, supporting it with analysis, pictures, correspondence and last but least old-style-site-diary.
