**What do you like best about GitLab?**

This tool increases the efficiency of a developer by showing where we are supposed to be actually. It shows where are we lagging behind. And on top of this it provides top notch secure storage.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

This tool simply lacks some essential features when comparing them with competitors. The menus are a bit complex to workaround for a beginner. Sometimes it takes a while to show the code error.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using this for delivery and to track the progress of my small projects which essentially don't require advanced features. It is fairly light application and the storing process is fast and effective.

  ### 5. Gitlab: version control hosting compared to github

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 24, 2021

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

In many regards, gitlab is similar to github. I like this because github has become the defacto standard for open source projects. I've used gitlab at multiple jobs and it's always been easy to work on if you have experience with github. Both host repositories with git, so it's mainly just an interface difference. The interface is easy for code browsing and code reviews.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

Both times I've used gitlab we transitioned off of it as a company. In my experience, when you have over 1,000 developers, the system does not scale well. It becomes slow to browse code, and syncing the repo locks up when many people push upstream. The paid version of gitlab we were using was also losing support.
So we ended up transitioning to github, and that was much better. Gitlab also doesn't have as good of a built-in issue tracking system.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it to collaborate on software development. Browse code. Perform code reviews. It also connects with other Atlassian products. For example, you can link to documentation in confluence. It works just as well as github for doing code reviews.

  ### 6. It is good tool

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rahul G. | Cloud DevOps Engineer ||, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 18, 2022

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

It is good for private access and securily access your code.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

i didn't like UI it can be improved in my opinion

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are managing our code base and integrating it with jenkins

  ### 7. A decent alternative to github

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vinay G. | Senior Software engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2021

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

- Lots of freebies compared to Github.
- Extensive options for managing Teams, Projects, and access to these projects.
- Provides protected branches for free.
- Unlimited Private Repos

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

- The service reliability is average at best.
- It goes down several times in a month

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- Repositories Management.
- Project Management.
- Issues Tracker

  ### 8. Gitlab Review

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Games | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 03, 2021

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

It's easy to use. Creating PRs is easy to do. The dev ops pipelines are apparently really good.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

Slow with large files. Lacks some of the nice features of GitHub like pages amd Actions.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Version control

  ### 10. Gitlab review

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2020

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

It allows all departments to report and track the status of technical issues

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

It is not user friendly or easy to navigate. We have several projects created and I have found it difficult to navigate between the projects to view details

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Reporting technical related issues and requesting tech related feature enhancements to our product

  ### 11. GitLab review

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2019

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

Git repository, CI/CD integration, not hard to install

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

Other programming tools do not have so much integrations as with GitHub for example

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Store current version of code and simple documents, manage changes, create CI/CD pipelines to pass code quality checks

  ### 12. GitLab

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kyle J. | Web Application Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 27, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

We are just implementing and trying this product out so far the feature that stands out the most is the integration service GitLab CI which can run automated tests after each commit and also automated staging deployments once those tests have run successfully. This is very useful for our testing servers and saves us lots of time since we do not have to manually do this process every time. It basically comes with all the functionality of git which we use at our company which is great. We started using issue tracking which is useful for pointing out bugs in the software so the right developer can fix it.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

UI is a bit clunky for users, to many clicks for simple tasks. Mattermost is the choice integrated chat, I would rather have slack.

**Recommendations to others considering GitLab:**

Try it out its cost effective public installation on https://gitlab.com/

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are trying to pull all our processes together into one platform (Version control, issue tracking, planning, automatic builds, code reviewing). We realized GitLab does fill some requirements but I feel GitHub is the better option.

  ### 13. Lower cost, yet full featured, alternative to GitLab

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Craig P. | Software Engineer, Internet, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 24, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

It's relatively easy to integrate with a CI platform like Jenkins using webhooks, which is great for getting feedback on the results of a build as merge requests are updated.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

Its interface can be buggy at times. For example, the worker process that updates the status of merge requests and commits in the background, when overloaded, can take a few seconds to catch up, so you might see inconsistencies locally versus what is displayed in the GitLab UI. Also, some parts of the interface are difficult to work with, and some forms will reset your information when changing certain fields (such as when creating a merge request and changing the target branch).

**Recommendations to others considering GitLab:**

If your organization can afford it, you might want to trial GitHub, as it is a more widely adopted solution and I've found that the UX is much more pleasant.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used GitLab as an alternative source control management system to Perforce because Git can be easier to work with and GitLab is cheaper than some of the other enterprise Git hosting solutions.

  ### 14. Decent, but complicated

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2018

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

The flexibility and control that we have over the system and the multiple levels of permissions systems.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

It's clunky to use and the menus are all very cluttered.

**Recommendations to others considering GitLab:**

If you need a lot of control over your system this will probably work for you, but if you just need a basic repository system, go with bitbucket or something simple and common. If you don't have any complex needs, don't complicate your life.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ability to host it ourselves and manage login systems.

  ### 15. Review of Gitlab

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mateusz B. | Frontend Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

- Easy of use, everybody will know how to use it
- Easy installation configuration, many tutorials with helpful docs
- Easy per user customization, you can choose your own theme and syntax highlighting
- Easy Gitlab CI configuration and automatic builds using runners

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

- It's buggy, sometimes file viewer is not loading
- It would be done to introduce more advanced Gerrit like review system
- Sometimes Gitlab CI runners crashes
- It's pretty slow on good internet, loading bars everywhere

**Recommendations to others considering GitLab:**

- Use Gitlab CI, its very powerful tool
- Install more plugins

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- Developing apps
- Fast code review

  ### 16. Good, not great

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Victor H. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 26, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

The UI is nice and appealing but not the easiest to navigate through. After using tools like GitHub and Bitbucket this is my least favorite.

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

I don't like the layout of the app, switching target branches should be more intuitive.

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Version Control. Nothing more advantageous than any of the other possibilities.

  ### 17. a modest version control system

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 30, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

it helps manipulate and save source code and the teamwork

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

the commands to push pull commit are a bit complicated

**Recommendations to others considering GitLab:**

i recommend it to anyone who wants to keep track of his code changes

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

programming

  ### 18. Gitlab Pros & Cons

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 26, 2017

**What do you like best about GitLab?**

- Free unlimited private repos
- Great feature sets

**What do you dislike about GitLab?**

- The UX/UI is not the easier to navigate around with
- Performance of the site is not the greatest

**What problems is GitLab solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hosted verson control for all our company's products, and the issue management for helping organize engineer's reviews are great!
