## About GitHub Actions

GitHub Actions is an enterprise-grade continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform built natively into GitHub. It enables developers and teams to automate, customize, and execute software development workflows directly within their GitHub repositories — without needing to manage separate CI/CD infrastructure or run code themselves. At its core, GitHub Actions allows users to define automated workflows using YAML files stored in the `.github/workflows/` directory of a repository. These workflows are composed of one or more jobs, each running on a virtual machine runner, and each job contains sequential or parallel steps that execute scripts or reusable actions. Workflows can be triggered by virtually any GitHub event — such as a push, pull request, issue creation, new release, or a scheduled cron job — as well as manually via `workflow_dispatch` or externally via the repository dispatch webhook. GitHub Actions goes beyond traditional DevOps and CI/CD. In addition to building, testing, and deploying code, it can automate tasks like labeling issues, triaging pull requests, managing branch policies, welcoming new contributors, and publishing packages — making it a comprehensive automation platform for the entire software development lifecycle. GitHub provides hosted runners on Ubuntu Linux, macOS, Windows, ARM, and GPU environments, so teams can build and test across multiple operating systems simultaneously. Each workflow run executes in a fresh, newly-provisioned virtual machine, ensuring clean and reproducible builds. For teams with specific infrastructure requirements, self-hosted runners can be configured on-premises or in private cloud environments. GitHub Actions supports a wide range of programming languages and ecosystems out of the box, including Node.js, Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, Go, Rust, .NET, and more, making it suitable for virtually any software project. Key productivity features include real-time live logs with color-coded output and emoji indicators, one-click shareable links to specific log lines for easy debugging, and a built-in encrypted secret store that allows teams to securely manage credentials at the repository, environment, or organization level. The GitHub Actions Marketplace is a central hub containing thousands of pre-built, community-contributed, and partner-verified actions that integrate with popular tools and services — from cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, to notification platforms like Slack, to container registries and package managers. Teams can also create and publish their own custom actions to share across their organization or with the broader GitHub community. GitHub Actions integrates natively with GitHub Packages, enabling seamless package management workflows including version updates, dependency resolution, and fast global CDN distribution — all authenticated using the built-in `GITHUB_TOKEN`. Pricing is usage-based, with free minutes included on every plan. GitHub Actions is free for all public repositories, and private repository users receive a monthly allotment of free minutes depending on their plan (ranging from 2,000 minutes on GitHub Free to 50,000 minutes on GitHub Enterprise). Self-hosted runners are always free to use regardless of plan.

"Reliable Collaboration and Traceability for Modern Software Delivery"

5/5

What do you like best about GitHub?

What I like best about GitHub is that it keeps code, collaboration, version history, and project workflow in one place. Pull requests, issues, branches, reviews, and Actions make it easier to manage development transparently and avoid losing track of changes. It is especially useful when working with partners or distributed teams because everyone can see what changed, why it changed, and what still needs attention. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

What I dislike about GitHub is that it can become complex and overwhelming, especially for non-technical users or smaller teams. Some workflows require many steps, such as branches, pull requests, permissions, Actions, and issue management. The interface is powerful, but it is not always simple to understand where something is configured or why an automation failed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

GitHub helps me solve problems around software delivery, code quality, collaboration, and traceability across complex technical projects. In my work as a senior software engineer and AI evaluation specialist, I use GitHub to manage code changes, review pull requests, track issues, organize project history, and support CI/CD workflows.

The biggest benefit is that it gives me a reliable way to collaborate across distributed teams while maintaining accountability. It helps me compare changes, verify implementations, manage regression tests, document technical decisions, and keep a clear record of what was changed and why. This is especially valuable for microservices, cloud infrastructure, payment systems, AI coding-agent evaluation, benchmark development, and production-grade software work. "Keeps code reviews and team collaboration organized"

4.5/5

What do you like best about GitHub?

What I like most about GitHub is how everything related to development can stay in one place. I use it for code, pull requests, issue tracking, and reviewing changes, so it makes collaboration much easier. The workflow feels pretty natural once you get used to it, and features like branches and pull requests make it easier to work with a team without stepping on each other’s changes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

The main thing I dislike is that GitHub can feel a bit overwhelming when you're new to it. There are a lot of features, settings, and different workflows to understand, especially around branches, pull requests, and permissions. The interface is generally fine, but sometimes finding a specific setting or understanding why something is configured a certain way takes a little digging. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

GitHub mainly solves the problem of keeping development work organized when multiple people are changing the same codebase. Before using a proper Git-based workflow, it was easier to lose track of which changes were ready, what had already been reviewed, or why a particular change was made.

For me, pull requests and code reviews are probably the biggest benefit. I can see exactly what changed, discuss specific lines with teammates, and keep the conversation attached to the code instead of searching through separate chats or emails. Having the commit history and issues linked to the work also makes it much easier to go back later and understand how or why something was changed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"GitHub Makes Collaboration and CI/CD Seamless with Powerful Integrations"

5/5

What do you like best about GitHub?

I appreciate GitHub for its exceptional ability to streamline collaboration and version control across development teams. The Pull Request workflow is polished and intuitive, making code reviews structured, transparent, and easy to manage. GitHub’s ecosystem — especially Actions, Issues, and integrated CI/CD — transforms project management into a seamless, automated experience. The platform’s reliability, clean interface, and powerful integrations make it an indispensable tool in any modern development workflow. My experience with AI and its automated features has been a mix of impressive capabilities and noticeable limitations. On the positive side, AI has significantly improved my workflow by accelerating repetitive tasks, generating creative ideas, and helping me explore unconventional solutions in programming challenges. It often provides insights or approaches that I wouldn’t have considered on my own, which makes problem‑solving faster and more efficient.

However, AI tools can still be inconsistent, especially in areas that require precision or strong visual structure. Automated UI generation, for example, tends to produce layouts that need extensive manual correction, and the output doesn’t always align with real design standards. Additionally, some automated features struggle with complex or ambiguous requests, which means I sometimes have to redo the work manually.

Overall, AI has become a valuable assistant in my development process, but it still requires careful oversight and isn’t fully reliable for tasks that demand high accuracy or refined visual design. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

While GitHub is an exceptional platform, there are a few areas that could be improved. Some advanced features — especially around enterprise‑level automation and security — are locked behind higher‑tier plans, which limits flexibility for smaller teams. The interface can also feel slow or cluttered when navigating large repositories with many branches, issues, or pull requests. Additionally, GitHub Actions sometimes requires deep YAML knowledge, making complex workflows harder to maintain.

One major concern for me is customer support responsiveness. When I encounter a serious issue and open a support ticket, it often takes months before I receive any meaningful reply. This delay makes it difficult to resolve critical problems in a timely manner. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

GitHub solves several critical challenges in modern software development. It provides a reliable and structured way to manage version control, ensuring that every change is tracked, documented, and reversible. This eliminates confusion around code updates and makes collaboration far more efficient. The Pull Request workflow helps maintain code quality by enabling clear reviews, discussions, and approvals before merging.

GitHub also centralizes project management through Issues, Discussions, and integrated CI/CD pipelines with Actions, allowing me to automate builds, tests, and deployments without relying on external tools. This reduces operational overhead and keeps the entire development lifecycle in one place. Overall, GitHub gives me a more organized, secure, and productive environment for building and maintaining software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
