Open but specialized development **Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2018 **What do you like best about GitHub?** Ability to lock down the system to make it very easy to copy/paste elements. I predominantly use the web client. **What do you dislike about GitHub?** the viewing areas are disjointed and the web client is not at all user friendly or intuitive. There are certain processes (such as sizing images) which can only be done individually (not in bulk/batch). **Recommendations to others considering GitHub:** Level-set on objectives among the entire team from the beginning. There will be different skill-sets and pre-existing strategies going in, and everyone needs to share in the tribal knowledge of how to use this product...which is not intuitive at all (even for developers). **What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?** Maintain a standardized layout(s), objects and overall style of our website while allowing several authors to make edits. ### 2. I like that it's free and a great source of open source code. Possibly the biggest, speaking merely from experience. And of course for collaboration it's really easy to use. **What do you dislike about GitHub?** I dislike some of their UX choices in the website, for example, the Comment button and the Merge pull request buttons are the same color and size, easy to make a mistake when you are trying to comment on a PR! **Recommendations to others considering GitHub:** If you write code: use this. Simple. Great price for peace of mind. **What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are using it to share design templates for reuse amongst our web design and development teams. Due to the common sharing we are always working from a common codebase and it has limited our defects. ### 3. Good company, bad product **Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Christopher K. | Lead Web Developer, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** March 14, 2016 **What do you like best about GitHub?** GitHub works hard to innovate developer culture, providing things like GitHub.io, Atom, and the GH Education Pack. **What do you dislike about GitHub?** The GitHub GUI obscures basic git features like git log and clone. Despite all the effort they put into developing tech culture, they fail to highlight the distinction between git and GitHub, adding confusing and unclear social features that run counter to the way git works. **Recommendations to others considering GitHub:** Consider BitBucket or GitLab, and MAKE SURE you know how to use git by itself first. **What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?** GitHub works decently to deploy code and share it between developers, but where it truly excels is the fringe benefits: A year of free web hosting, a free domain, all sorts of software and resources in the Education Pack. ## GitHub Discussions - [What is GitHub used for?](https://www.g2.com/discussions/what-is-github-used-for) - 8 comments, 5 upvotes - [How to do proper versioning in the system?
