**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dan K. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 08, 2023

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

We have been using gitea for several years and have found it to be an essential part of our workflow for hosting git repositories.

Gitea has quite a few features and is under active development bringing new functionality.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

Being self hosted means as new versions are released, you do need to update your installation. So far we have had no issues with any of the upgrades and it has been a smooth process.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of our requirements was to have self-hosted git repositories. Gitea provides this and much more functionality. Access control, issue management, package hosting, projects, etc, all allow for management of projects within the same platform with the source code.

  ### 5. Gitea

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sandesh M. | Sr. Programmer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 14, 2022

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

The main thing that makes gitea great is the ability to host git server locally onto our own machine.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

The only downside is that you need adequate Linux shell knowledge to install it on your own server.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Gitea is helping my team work on projects as a team, smoothly without any conflict.

  ### 7. Lightweight and self-hosted Git repositories.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** César G. | Senior Software Development Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

Besides being a self-hosted alternative to GitHub, it has many features (issues, milestones, wiki, etc.) while keeping the resource usage very low, compared to GitLab. Gitea doesn't have a Continuous Integration (CI) system built-in but it offers integration with other popular CI platforms like Drone CI.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

The backup and restore functionality is very basic. For example, there is no automatic backup feature so we had to develop our scripts to make and rotate the backups. The restore functionality is missing as well since one has to follow a guide to restore a backup.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Gitea to host our company's private repositories and manage the platform issues and documentation. The integration between commits and issues allows our developers to link and close issues without logging in to the Gitea Web interface.

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

How easy installation and management. It's literally one of the easiest software I've had to manage.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

Markdown editor for .md files could be better with more functionalities such as buttons for various formatting options.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping backups of scripts and config files. It's very beneficial to go back and look at old commits to see what changed in the configuration files.

  ### 10. Small footprint, fast, complete

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

Gitea has a small footprint and can run on very small server.
On mid size server is really fast!

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

It's a self contained Go application. It run with its own http interface and a reverse proxy is needed even if you're working in a firewalled network.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We setup a complete Git server abandoning commercial platforms available on the market.
The resulting service is really simple to be used and maintained.

  ### 11. Gitea repo and issue tracking

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

Um gitea you have all the project tool for free.
You can open projects, manage users with different privilege rules. issue tracking with milestones and labels, time tracking. Wiki, Pull Requests area.
But what i really love on it it’s the integration with Jenkins that allow to make deploys automatically.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

Some versions when you change the label you nee to wait for refresh page.

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

It’s a free tool that supports all kind of projects that needs a doc or code repo or tasks management. I really recommend it and use it with other teams

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Web development repos to my team projects, in reactjs, react-native, Java spring, PHP, Laravel, codignite

  ### 12. If you like GitHub, you're going to fall in love with Gitea!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bradley D. T. | Manager Network Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

GitHub, Gitlab, Sourcehut - Source code repositories well known for their easy access and collaborative nature in not just the development of software, but also a place where authors and publishers, even recipe writers keep their most valuable creations.

Books and blogs and virtually anything that you can think of are compiled and disseminated, assembled, and made available for the public in revision control systems powered by Git, yet these all lack one important aspect, and that is the security and confidence inherent in self-hosting your very own creations on your very own property.

Enter Gitea - a fully FOSS based Git powered solution with a beautiful GUI that is web based, and accessible from anywhere on the Internet - if you so choose, because you could keep it behind your corporate firewall, or even in your home running on a RaspberyPI.

Gitea has the almost identical look and feel that you're so comfortable with if you've ever been involved in a project where Github was used to house your repository, and offers most all of the features that Github does, and many more that Github doesn't.

It runs on your own infrastructure, that means that no one determines aspects concerning the privacy of your intellectual property but you. Any UNIX based machine, bare metal or virtual server, will suffice nicely because Gitea is so lightweight that it will perform exceedingly well even on a single board hobbiest computer with the most popular webservers, and comes with its own SSH server that you can optionally enable.

For the database engines available, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and SQLite are your choices - again, all Free and Open Source solutions that are proven performers in the Enterprise. For your Android, Gitea has a cousin that is virtually plug and play in Gitrex, a beautiful client that you can install on your phones and tablets that is available from the F-Droid repo as well as the Google Play Store - Everything is FOSS, so there are no licensing fees, subscriptions for support, or contract renewals.

Unlike Gitlab, Gitea is super lightweight, which is why it can be so responsive on low powered devices like the Pi. Gitea supports the mirroring of repos from any other server running Git, such as the big three mentioned above, and its capability as a PWS means that on your phone it's basically like a native app that can be conveniently placed on your home screen - one touch and your in, perusing your repos and mirrors and clones, submitting PRs and making commits or reviewing code - or that novel you've been writing.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

There's really very little that I don't like about Gitea, but two things stand out, and one of those isn't even really an issue, so I'll cover that first.

1.) SQLite3 - If you really want to see lightning (even on your home router with OpenWRT installed or a RaspberryPI), you'll be amazed at the blinding speed with which Gitea responds, but with SQLite it's common knowledge that as your database grows, there's eventually a point where you reach the land of diminishing returns. But that's a long way down the road and if the number of users and projects aren't enormous you'll never see that kind of degradation of performance.

That's why I recommend choosing either MariaDB or PostgreSQL for your database, along with Nginx as your web sever, but Apache is also a time proven server as well.

2.) Gitea's initial web-based installation routine allows you to select the features and options you wish to have enabled or disabled in your configuration. After that, a single config file handles all of those adjustments and options.

Although it's simple enough to open the configuration file in any editor and restart Gitea with your new settings and features, there's also the graphical system's "Configuration tab under "Site Administration". But there's a catch, you can't actually affect any changes there, although it certainly looks like you can - i.e., it's strictly for reference, and you need to actually make any changes you want in the config file and once restarted those features and options will be reflected there.

Both of those issues are so trivial, they're almost non-issues, but it would be nice if you could make those changes in the GUI, like you can in the graphical installation routine; however, the developers tell me that is on the roadmap.

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

Don't forget to take advantage of the extra features such as Wiki and other team collaboration capabilities you can integrate with Gitea, like Slackbots or IRCbots or Discord bots - basically, to push notifications to team members regarding commits, etc.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Gitea as our primary git interface when we're not working on the CLI, and I personally like to use Gitrex as my git client on my phone, which marries seamlessly with Gitea. For our clients that need a graphical solution for Git that is under their sole control, or high security settings (or even a customer who is a chef that keeps her culinary books, menus, and recipes on a Git repo), here's how we typically solve their issues of content revisioning:

We start with a virtual machine in either our cloud that the customer rents from us or use a server on their premises, deploy Debian 10 GNU/Linux, install the Nginx webserver PosgreSQL, and Gitea. Then using certbot, acquire the LetsEncrpt TLS certificate for the Gitea website and then, if they have any repositories hosted elsewhere we migrate them over to their new secure Gitea server by mirroring or cloning their existing repos or creating new ones as need be.

Next, and because most development departments employ staff members that need to access their git repos while on the road or remotely while working from home, the convenience of installing Gitea as a PWS on the home screens of their tablets and phones, or installing Gitrex, completes the availability requirements for their business processes.

  ### 13. Gitea is a modern public and private repositories service

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David S. | Arquitecto de aplicaciones web, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2019

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

Gitea is a collaborative website with excellent response times. What I like most is that it allows me to quickly load my projects and use collaboration tools to organize version control. I also like its Swagger UI development API, which is open source.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

I believe that the tool does not have enough online documentation to learn how to use the product, although I also believe it is because the platform does not have a large user community.

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

I recommend this version control platform for companies that do not have a large budget and that require a complete and easy-to-use service. It is a solution that will live upto your expectations. The platform is hosted on a fast server and its website has excellent response times.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This platform allows us to have a large part of the source code of our applications in private mode. We have found benefits in it is no longer necessary to keep our projects on local servers, since we can store everything in the cloud through Gitea. We have also found benefits with their review systems, to ensure the quality of our projects.

  ### 14. Powerful, Open Source, Free, Self Hosted

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrew F. | Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2019

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

the fact that its hosted locally or on a company owned cloud server is great. It gives the system administrators full control over the system and it costs a lot less. Wombathaven's purpose is to help people and business build their own cloud and break free from proprietary software and restrictive licences. This GitHub like alternative is great and easy for the developers to use. Thee only limit is your hardware

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

Its difficult to get started and administration is a small bit difficult. Once everything is setup its better. Also the software is dependent on your host system/VM. You need some good CPU power and RAM to run the system. Besides these things there is not much I dislike with the software

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

Gitea should be easier for admins

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No software limits to worry about. My clients love it. It is a great experience for everyone and the best benefit is the freedom and low cost this software has.

  ### 15. Works well, but server resource usage can be a little high

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Les D. | Owner and maintainer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 17, 2019

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

It has a convenient interface that's similar to GitHub's and much more intuitive than alternatives like GitLab and Bitbucket.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

The server resource usage, mostly memory, can be a little high, but still much better than GitLab's.

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

Consider deploying through Docker

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for project hosting, both for private use and for free use by the public

  ### 16. Help, share and correct code errors.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Valentina H. | Administrator of tariffs in mundoturismo, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2019

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

I love the community of collaborators in Git groups. One of the best features is the support for multiple databases, allowing everyone with permission to modify to make changes simultaneously while you have your projects. It consumes very few computer resources and is designed to work on the platform. Its working method is based on cooperative work, where you can access and view repositories in code form and use them freely.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

It does not have a sample server with which you can have a sample portfolio for a static page like other git platforms, and there are no container records automatically. It works in a simpler way, so therefore it does not have so many subgroups.

**Recommendations to others considering Gitea:**

If you decide to work with a git tool and don't need many options and configurations, this platform provides those simple capabilities.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Perfect for starting with group work that requires more than one person to work in the same file, its use is simple and shows straightforward comparisons and alerts. It is perfect to start working without much hassle.

  ### 17. Great lightweight source control platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christophere J. | PHP Developer, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 08, 2018

**What do you like best about Gitea?**

Gitea is very lightweight and none resource heavy as other contending software.

**What do you dislike about Gitea?**

Doesn’t have CI built in compared to platforms like Gitlab.

**What problems is Gitea solving and how is that benefiting you?**

when cost and resources are a concern Gitea is a viable solution and is easy to setup
