Before all the AI boom and people started to use web browser editors, GIMP was the only real alternative to Photosop.

It's still very powerful, and very convenient.

Works locally, if you don't want to rely on cloud and have all your files locally.

It's a bit heavy: if you want to do just a quick change it might take more time to load GIMP than really doing the job.

It sometimes have technical issues like multilayer selection and and transformations which used to be issue before but recent update has fixed it. The thing I like best about GIMP is that it is free. I found the interface and the ease of using certain tools is not as intuitive as Photoshop, Luminar or Affinity. It is probably the best option that is Open Source and Free. It has a large amount of features for an open source option, but using them is not as easy as paid options. It could just be me. I find it more confusing that other items. I find it less intuitive, I find that there is a lot that a program like Affinity, Photoshop or Luminar do for me that I actually have to do for myself and have to know how to do.
