  ### 8. Best Floodplain Modeling Tool Available – Better Efficiency, Great Visualization, Ease of Use

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Len B. | Supervisor of Engineering \ Associate, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 14, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

As a Professional Engineer, I and my firm get into a lot of floodplain studies as part of the land development process. Prior to utilizing GEOHECRAS, our design process to complete these studies was much more cumbersome. Typically, we would set up the model (centerline alignment & cross section lines) within AutoCAD Civil3D, export the model to HECRAS, then run the model within the base program of HECRAS. Inevitably, there were always alignment issues with the export/import process. Many hours had been spent manually updating the geodetic information of the alignment for them to show correctly within the HECRAS project file. Then after analysis results, many hours were spent plotting the floodplain and floodway within our 3D surface within Civil3D. In all honesty, GEOHECRAS has streamlined our entire design process related to floodplain studies. What previously took 4-5 days for a large site floodplain and floodway analysis can be completed within 6 hours.

Also within the program are many timesavers when manipulating the model. Bulk change mannings n values, add\delete sections without having to manually update the centerline alignment, ineffective flow areas, junctions, etc are seamlessly automatically updated in your model with a simple click. While you can use RASmapper in HECRAS, the integrated google aerials and USGS National Map LIDAR terrain are a HUGE time saver. Lastly, the project export function within the program allows us to seamlessly share our files with review agencies, even including the base surfaces and aerials within the zip file.

Additionally from a client and agency perspective, the visuals that GEOHECRAS automatically produces are simple for the laymen to understand. Specifically the “heat map” of the terrain surface, automatic visualization of the floodplain and floodway limits, and the ability to change I ton the fly during a meeting has been a great advantage.
Lastly, GEOHECRAS (I presume their parent company) have the best customer service and technical troubleshooting I have experienced in my 20+ year career. (Not that I recommend it but …) I have been working on the weekend and have sent a tech support email on a Sunday, thinking they would get back to me the following business day. I was shocked that within 30 minutes someone was already calling me to troubleshoot an issue in my model.

I have praised this product to many of my contemporaries at other firms. The efficiency in our design process has more than paid for the cost of the product in a few projects.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

My biggest critique of the program would be the seemingly frequent updates and patches that are pushed out. Some of these versions have had vetting problems with some of the functions. One inadvertent change that happened was a “fuzzing” of surfaces (less resolution in the terrain model) when merging terrains (pasting proposed on existing). That just appeared in a version unbeknownst to the users or tech support. To GEOHECRAS’ credit, within a few days we had a video call so they could see what we were seeing in our model, internally they went to their programmers, identified the problems, and sent a patch to fix it. The updates aren’t mandatory and we frequently wait until after a project is completed to update our versions to avoid any issues like this when you are in a project rush.

There are also minor export discrepancies between GEOHECRAS and Civil 3D. I have noticed a small shift in the geodetic location of the floodplain between the two options for exporting the limits of the floodplain. This is easily resolved in Civil3D with a quick comparison (most users probably wouldnt even notice). In the grand scheme of things the difference is de minimis.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Like many in our industry, finding qualified staff that have the background knowledge to model floodplains has been trying. I find that the learning curve for this program is much less for younger and newer employees than utilizing the base HECRAS software. Beyond the onboarding\training of the program, I find that our efficiencies in performing and revising\editing these models is greatly improved. I would estimate that it takes roughly a third of the time for a mid-level designer\engineer to perform the studies and get to a point where we can visually represent the floodplain limits on our plans. Lastly, I believe the consistency of our floodplain modeling between multiple offices and teams has greatly improved. Given the presets and user interface within GEOHECRAS, it is much easier for me to review and provide a more easily followed standard process for the designers to implement.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Len,

Thank you very much for sharing your review. Your feedback helps us create high-performing software, so never hesitate to let us know what we’re doing right—or how we can improve!

  ### 9. GeoHEC-RAS speeds up Hydraulic Modelling workflows

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan G. | Water Resources Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 31, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

GeoHEC-RAS adds significant functionality over the base HEC-RAS software. Generally I can complete tasks with fewer clicks and the menus are more easier to navigate than HEC-RAS. Rather than switching between RAS Mapper and the HEC-RAS geometry window in HEC-RAS, I am able to define and edit geometry in the same window which improves efficiency. I do a lot of 2D modelling and the ability to select from a variety of mesh types including hexagonal has helped to reduce the number of mesh errors compared to using HEC-RAS. We also consistently export the GeoHEC-RAS models to HEC-RAS to facilitate review by others without a license and have not had any issues. The GIS tools in the software have also been useful, such as the stamp geometry tool that allows me to define a cross-section shape, channel path, and inverts and the software creates a new terrain file where the cross-section is burned in along the path to ensure the low-flow channel is represented, rather than having to manually adjust each cross-section in HEC-RAS. Overall the software is intuitive, greatly improves productivity in hydraulic modelling and has been a good investment for our organization.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

Working in Canada I have found that a lot of the integrated data, such as stream layers, land use, and stream gauges are only available in the US. Ideally I would like to see more Canadian data added to the software. I would also like to use the models more collaboratively with coworkers in the future by saving and accessing the models via OneDrive, but have run into issues where the OneDrive path is different on others PCs so the file references do not work on other PCs. Being able to use relative path names may be able to address this.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHEC-RAS improves HEC-RAS modelling workflows and has saved us significant time which has justified the cost over the last few years. The software has also proved useful for editing older HEC-RAS projects that did not use GeoHEC-RAS.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Ryan,

Thank you very much for sharing your review. Your comments gave us a boost of confidence; and, of course, we are pleased to know that GeoHECRAS helps you achieve your engineering goals.

We also appreciate hearing your concerns regarding the limited availability of Canadian data in the software and project shareability issues. Rest assured, our team is constantly working to improve the many features and overall workability of GeoHECRAS. In fact, we are excited to inform you that Canadian data will be included in the upcoming release of GeoHECRAS.

  ### 32. Highly versatile software for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zane M. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 28, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

It is an excellent software tool for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. It's easy to use and helps professionals create and manage complex models for rivers, bridges, floods, and storms. What's great about GeoHECRAS is that it can work with different types of data, like maps and pictures, and make really accurate and cool-looking pictures of what might happen in a river or during a flood. It's also smart and can learn from what it sees in real life, which makes the models even better.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

A downside to GeoHECRAS is the cost of the software, which may be relatively high for small businesses or individual users with limited budgets. Additionally, the software requires a powerful computer system to run smoothly, which may add to the overall cost of using the software. However, if you're a professional who works with rivers, floods, or other water things, then GeoHECRAS is a must-have tool for your work.

  ### 35. Teamed effort to ramp up my modeling skills

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lawrence L. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 09, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

The best thing about the program is the staff. Their engineers are available 24-7 to help you learn the ropes of this complex modeling system. Being in the field for some 30 years, with 20 of those solo, the rapid and ever-changing advances of H&H modeling technology seemed impossible to maintain. After several 4-day training sessions with others, 2D modeling concepts began to sink in, but practical use was always far off until I started using GeoHECRAS-2D.

The staff at GeoHECRAS guided me through the development of an extensive modeling program (over 6,000 acres) that included multiple detention ponds, major stream realignments, and floodplain fill. The model was diverse as it utilized many of the powerful features found in the program.

The staff was very thorough, patient (I'm old school), over-the-top professional, kind, and well-trained. Only a few advanced issues required the assistance of their most seasoned engineers. The team leader also chimed in a few times.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

There isn't much to mention here. The downsides are related to HECRAS modeling, not GeoHECRAS as an interface. There are a few improvements that can be made, but they often update their programs and dish out reinstalls.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Understanding 2D modeling and keeping up with the technology. By adding 2D modeling skills to my repertoire, I can work through this final quarter of my Civil Engineering career with confidence.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Lawrence, thank you for taking the time to share your review; your comments certainly made our day! We're thrilled to learn how you are improving your engineering projects and work processes with GeoHECRAS. It is extremely gratifying to know that GeoHECRAS meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to assist you. We value our customers and look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you!

  ### 36. Ideal Tool for Everyday Hydraulic Model

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan W. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

The GUI for GeoHECRAS allows for models to be created quickly and efficiently. The MS Office style ribbon at the top of the screen works well for windows users as it provides a familiar feel to the GUI. The generate terrain option from multiple elevation data sources is very helpful as it is common practice to merge elevation data files from CAD and other elevation data sources.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

The learning curve for GeoHECRAS is initially a little steep, but that is how it goes with design software capable of performing many tasks in different ways. Creating a model wizard could help beginning users develop a model quickly, but that may have unforeseen downsides.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHECRAS speeds the creation of hydraulic models compared to other software commonly available and allows hydraulic designs and analyses to be conducted quickly.

  ### 37. Making hydraulic design more visual

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matt B. | Structural Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 01, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

Being able to bring in CAD drawings for reference is the most useful. Also adding the ability to merge terrains, even users unfamiliar with GIS, can get surfaces to cut cross-sections from.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

Originally I had concerns about the compatibility of some coordinate systems as the CAD drawings didn't align with overlaid satellite maps. This seems to be fixed in newer versions but should still be verified by users.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use the product for hydraulic sizing of replacement bridge projects. The program is beneficial when the stream alignment has a bending or unique geometry near the bridge to allow for the determination of normal stream alignment, overbank flow lengths and ineffective flow areas.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Matt, thank you for taking the time to share your review; your comments certainly made our day! Thank you!

  ### 41. I use it for channel design!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marty R. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2023

  ### 42. Very easy to use. More convenient than HEC-RAS.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

Very easy to edit cross-sections and structures with GeoHEC-RAS. I can edit on map view or plot view whichever I prefer. The built-in GIS tools also make it faster to assign parameters and save time.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

The flow inputting is not as simple as HEC-RAS. I can generate an excel tabe and just copy/paste to HEC-RAS, but with GeoHEC-RAS I have to choose each reach to enter flows.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The built-in GIS tools and the ability of adding CAD drawings save time for modelers, and also save money from buying CAD and GIS lisence.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi, thanks a lot for sharing your review. Reading comments like yours gives a boost to our confidence; and, of course, we are very pleased to know that GeoHECRAS helps you achieve your engineering goals.

  ### 43. Amazing software for civil engineers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** B H. | Civil Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 25, 2022

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

The people that created this software understand the features needed to create accurate models AND they care a lot about your user experience. GeoHECRAS has been my go-to program for many of my civil engineering needs whether it be delineating watersheds, evaluating terrain, modeling bridges and flows, and more things. This is a great program that works really well with GIS and AutoCAD and has an easy to use interface as well. A very powerful program that helps me be a more efficient engineer.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

There haven't really been any downsides which is the great part. If there is an issue, you talk to tech support and then a little bit later they roll out another update fixing the problem you were having.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHECRAS has enabled me to efficiently delineate watersheds, model flooding, and explore the terrain in areas. This allows me to properly design stormwater practices such as ponds, sewer systems, and other control practices.

  ### 44. GeoHECRAS, is a very useful program to interface with HECRAS, and has awesome customer support !

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam H. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 11, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

GeoHECRAS, is a very useful program to interface with the cumbersome HECRAS software.
The GIS and CAD integration is great. You can pull in the GIS files from various agencies, pull in LIDAR data (Ground and highest hit) perform color rendering of the LIDAR data, plot contours, export to CAD in real coordinates, as well as many other manipulations. You can pull in CAD files that show your design, buildings, river or project stationing, and other collogues designs and much more. There are some very cool water basin tools that work great for stormwater design.
Civil Geo has awesome customer support that comes with the software package!!!!
The need for technical support is not very frequent but when it’s needed they are there to assist. I can call tech support and normally get a very well qualified Engineer to help me with any software issue that comes up, within about 5 minutes. They log into my machine while we are still on the telephone and we figure out the issue, fix it and I move on to more production work. The Engineers are very helpful and you don’t get stuck in the que for days, weeks or even, months as some other software companies. In fact I was talking to one of the largest CAD companies about their horrible tech support and software that doesn’t work out of the box. The software has had issues since it was purchased about 4 months ago. I told them about Civil Geo and how they have awesome technical support and the Big CAD Company should take notes of Civil Geo’s customer support. Way to go Civil Geo you have set the standard for technical support and you will start taking over more market shares from some of the largest CAD software companies that have forgot the basics of software development. It needs to work out of the box! If it doesn’t work then the software developer needs to fix it in a reasonable amount of time which in my case has been 3-4 months now! Keep it up, we will be looking for more of your software as you develop it.

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

GeoHecras is great software used for flood mapping for multiple scenarios and it is very user-friendly. Also the team provides good backend support

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

there is nothing much to dislike. Just sometime the system gets too loaded

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me to solve cut and fill analysis, culvert design, flood mapping and hydraulic analysis. Most of the flood modelling is done easily and accurately

  ### 46. Simplifies and expedites HEC-RAS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric M. | Project Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

I've been doing civil engineering for over 5 years. My first roll was very broad. When I moved to a specifically H&H position I knew that HEC-RAS was a technical weakness of mine. GeoHECRAS simplified the learning curve. I'm now confident in creating and running 1D and 2D models in less time than I expected. GeoHECRAS has a phenomenal customer support system to assist with modeling and answering questions. Don't wait to ask questions, they can help!

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

There are a few quirks. One i ran into in 2D is that roadway crossings can't be modeled as "roadway crossings", they have to be modeled as 2D Connections, at least if you need to model culvert and weir flow. The two options appear and function the same when putting the min the model, but one runs, and one doesn't. There have been a couple things like this, but that's pretty typical of H&H software.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use GeoHECRAS for modeling of floodplains, design channels, and existing vs proposed conditions for systems downstream of developments. Most of my work is residential development, but I do some commercial and power work as well.

  ### 47. Valuable HEC-RAS Addition

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Malcolm S. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 10, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECRAS?**

. I trust the results because it’s HEC-RAS model files and the CAD and GIS features make creating cross-section hydraulic geometry significantly easier to generate. CivilGeo standard apart from other software companies with it’s fantastic technical support – I appreciate that I am quickly connected directly with an engineer who understands both what the software is doing and the engineering behind project-specific situations.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECRAS?**

I wish it ran better on my network server drives but I don't mind copying files to and from my local hard drive.

**What problems is GeoHECRAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

HEC-RAS models can often be tedious to set up and GeoHECRAS makes it easier to go from topographic data to a hydraulic model.
