GeoHECHMS provides a platform to expedite the creation of hydrological models in a GIS framework, allowing for more visual and intuitive navigation of problems that are being solved with the models. The efficiency allows the engineer to spend more time on problem solving and design, rather than on model development tasks. The technical support team is very helpful and should be considered an integrated component of the model development workflow for maximum efficiency, quality, and value out of the software. The software is built upon freely available software (HEC-HMS), so much of the output can be achieved without paying for geoHECHMS. However, this comes at a cost of time and resources due to the less efficient workflows, and no access to the incredibly useful technical support team, which is why geoHECHMS is so valuable. Stormwater management, wetland and stream restoration design, flood hazard mapping, presenting modeling results with compelling visuals in a GIS-based platform, and client and stakeholder consultation. Workflow efficiency has increased considerably and the number of hours required to complete projects has reduced, allowing me to allocate more hours to problem-solving and value-added services for clients. As a self-employed consultant, I can take control of more phases of a project, reducing the need for inefficient task hand-offs to other consultants and iterative processes by integrating design workflows into efficient hydrological modeling tasks.
